Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders is heading to Washington Thursday for back-to-back meetings with President Obama and Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid. A Senate aide familiar with the planning of the latter meeting said the expectation is that Sanders will push for leadership changes at the Democratic National Committee when the pair sit down. This could include a call for the removal of the party’s chairwoman, Florida Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz.
Sanders’ planned meetings come as he is facing mounting pressure to end his presidential campaign. His rival in the Democratic primary, Hillary Clinton, secured enough delegates to become the party’s presumptive nominee on Monday. In spite of Clinton’s victories in Tuesday’s primary contests, Sanders indicated he plans to stay in the race and contest the Democratic convention next month.
The Senate aide noted that Fox News’ Chad Pergram reported that Sanders could ask for the removal of Wasserman Schultz in his meetings with both Obama and Reid. In a series of tweets, Pergram said “some Dem sources believe the key to getting unity” with Sanders after a tough primary campaign is “booting Wasserman Schultz.” Sanders’ campaign has also called for the removal of the co-chairs of the DNC’s standing committee on rules, Connecticut Gov. Dan Malloy and former Rep. Barney Frank. The Senate aide expected that Sanders will present Reid with plans that would help him join a post-primary effort to unify the party.
“We’ve been in listening mode for the most part. He’s going to be hearing what Bernie’s ideas are for bringing the party together and hoping he comes with some ideas,” the aide said of Reid. “And hopefully there are some good ones they can work on together.”
If Sanders does indeed call for removing Wasserman Schultz or other DNC leaders, the aide said Reid would be “open to hearing him out.”
Sanders’ campaign did not respond to multiple requests for comment from Yahoo News about plans for the meetings.

Donald Trump being President means that 20 million of my fellow citizens will lose their health care. 20 million.
POTUS and Harry Reid kept the Barbarians at the gate. Just look at what POTUS has vetoed, and imagine what would happen if those pieces of legislation had been signed into law.
If Trump wins they will go piece by piece to erase PBO’s legacy.

If the GOP gets the WH, we can look at Wisconsin and Michigan, and North Carolina to see what they would do to the country.

It’s the 1100 laws on the state level with regards to hurt women’s health.
It’s everything they’ve done on the state level come to the federal level.
it’s Medicare into a voucher program.

Look at Paul Ryan’s so called poverty plan. Trump would sign a Paul Ryan budget.

I see what you’re saying. I understand that. But Hillary is not the one to do it. Bernie Sanders is right there. He’s 74 years old but he’s no push over. He’s left blood in the streets for civil rights when it wasn’t popular for white people to do so. Bernie’s not scared. Potus is making a huge mistake with Hillary and Bill scandalous Clinton.
If this were the case, the Democratic party should have thought about that and left the democratic process play out naturally and in the most organic manner…instead of preemptively clearing the field and planning a Hillary coronation from the get-go to trap us into having no other options –

Obama won’t endorse any Democratic candidate before primaries are over.White House Chief of Staff Denis McDonough announced today that the president will not lend his support to any Democrat in the race until the general election. At that point, McDonough said on NBC’s Meet the Press, “We’ll do exactly what has been done in the past.”
Of course, Obama’s decision not to endorse a candidate during primary season does break somewhat with tradition. Back in 2000, President Bill Clinton endorsed Al Gore while Democratic opponent Bill Bradley was still in the running for the nomination. It’s a favor Gore declined to return to this cycle’s Clinton, though silence from Obama is a far more interesting development than Gore’s demurral.

I understand SG2. I wanted someone else. I believe she’s a weak candidate. I believe she comes with all sorts of nonsense. And her husband gives one convention speech – and with that, takes credit for single-handedly winning the election for the President – but returns to t.v the next day joining the Cory Booker chorus to outrightly contradict and undermine the President on the economy and Wall Street…and just before the elections against Romney …an election that delicately hung in the balance..
The sort of power play that has the President surrounded in the White House by the same inner circle Clinton loyalists like John Podesta (of the recruiting Cabinet staff for the newly minted Democratic President …filling the White House with Clintonistas, while tee-heeing with Hillary at the absolute chaos via e-mail fame) who insinuated themselves into the President’s inner circle, and now run Hillary’s campaign…
The President is a Leo man…as is Bill Clinton..
This is all a game of wits…and ultimately, who owes who…and who is on top and whose legacy is greatest and most endures…and who has the greatest pull and clout when this is all over – and 10 years from now…and whose influence moves opinions, crowds…

Trump was Trump was Trump, the eternal asshole, Barnum without the charm, the grifter in his greatest con. He promised to attack Hillary Clinton, whose name was booed multiple times, and he promised things that, if a Democrat promised them, she’d be called a crazy socialist: “Every American worker of every background is entitled to the same benefits, protections and rights and privileges.” Well, sure, but, like so many things Trump said, like about infrastructure spending and schools “failing,” someone needed to say, “Who the fuck made that happen? The Democrats who tried to pass spending bills or the Republicans who blocked them?”
What was disturbing, though, was the whole zeitgeist in the room. You just see reporters and Trump. There is so very much more. Before the event began, we were treated to a parade of sycophants. Apprentice contestant Omarosa was there and, as pretty much the only African American in the room other than some of the people on cameras, she was instantly everyone’s “I have a black friend” friend, posing for tons of photos. Fox “news” was on all the large TVs, forcing us to see Bill O’Reilly. Then, just before Trump spoke, a parade of wealthy people entered to take their seats; a bunch of them were older men with slicked-back hair, looking like stereotypes of mobbed-up goombahs, all with spray-tanned, multi-bejeweled trophy wives. There were old money couples, walking around like they owned the joint because, you know, they kind of did.
And they became Trump’s slavering fan club, cheering like deranged teenagers at a One Direction show, chanting his name every chance they had. It was so insidious. What you didn’t get was that when Trump said, “[W]e are all suffering and we’re suffering big league and it’s getting worse,” a roomful of extremely rich fucks cheered in agreement. Yeah, they were suffering, these pampered pricks and pussies who probably made more money under the Obama administration than in the rest of their luxurious lives.
One thought stuck with me. It didn’t matter one rat’s fart who became president to these people. It wouldn’t change anything. They would still be privileged and powerful, so all they really gave a goddamn about was seeing their friend Donald get elected because wouldn’t it be a gas to go to parties he would throw at the White House.
Jesus, how they yelled and clapped in approval when Trump said, “We’re going to rebuild our inner cities, which are absolutely a shame and so sad. We’re going to take care of our African-American people that have been mistreated for so long.” Forget the phrase “our African America people,” as if he’s sharing them with us. Who the fuck says these things in a country club with a $200,000 membership fee? And how is that not mentioned in every fucking report about the event? No Democrat would make a victory speech at a country club. They might have fundraisers there, which sucks, but Hillary Clinton was at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, a big space with a working class history. Even if it’s become another gentrified area now, at least it made some sense.

Human beings are flawed..no matter how wonderful…they sometimes make ‘practical’ calls that are in their self-interest…and have absolutely nothing to do with you or me…or the masses…
This was first and foremost a ‘practical, self-interested’ call by the President, and he knows it wasn’t entirely the most honorable way to go…but he made a deal…
With absolutely nothing going for him, Bernie showed it could be done…and the President was infinitely more equipped and able to pull it all off had he the will…but he made other calculations…including the decision not to rock the boat too much…to play along…And now, just as agreed to, he passes the baton to Hillary..

When Donald Trump recently scheduled a speech on energy policy in Bismarck, North Dakota, many Republicans wondered why in the world he didn’t pick a bigger city in a swing state. When he soon after started campaigning in California, where Republicans stand no realistic chance of winning the presidential race, GOP insiders scratched their heads once more.
This New York Times article today won’t improve the party’s confidence in Team Trump’s strategic thinking.
Donald J. Trump has hired a new pollster to help him capture an elusive Republican victory in New York, his home state, two people briefed on the move said.
The pollster, John McLaughlin, will be focusing exclusively on New York, polling to determine what type of climb Mr. Trump would face in a state that hasn’t voted for a Republican in a presidential race since Ronald Reagan in 1984.
Though recent polls show Hillary Clinton leading Trump in hypothetical match-ups in the Empire State, the Times article added that the Republican is nevertheless “adamant” about winning New York.
As for how, exactly, he intends to pull this off, Trump isn’t just hiring a pollster. Failed New York gubernatorial candidate Carl Paladino, Trump’s campaign’s co-chair in the state, told CNN the campaign will prevail by “blanketing the upstate region with signs and bumper stickers.”
You might think I’m making this up. I’m not. Hitting upstate New York with yard signs is part of the campaign’s recipe for success in one of the nation’s most populous states. (Carl Paladino lost his 2010 gubernatorial race in New York by 29 points. I just thought I’d mention that.)
Note, the same CNN report added that Republican officials in North Carolina and Michigan are “yet to hear from” anyone with the Trump campaign, and the presumptive GOP nominee “doesn’t have so much as a state director” in battlegrounds such as Ohio and Colorado.
Ask yourselves fam, why the sitting President is going out so prematurely on the campaign trail with the ‘strongest, most qualified, toughest, ready on day one, veteran politician, who’s husband – a former president, is touted as the best politician and campaigner ever’…
What the heck is going on here..

If it ends up being between Trump and Clinton, I will have to vote for Clinton, and I definitely don’t like having that leash thrown around my neck.
But, I absolutely refuse to vote for Trump who, I believe, will be a racist dictator. Already we have seen haters and racial bigots emboldened by Trump and given permission by him to spew their hate and to attack the BlackLivesMatter advocates. He has never shown any concern for helping unarmed Black victims who have been fatally shot or brutally beaten to receive justice. He has never condemned racial profiling and stereotyping. He has never addressed or condemned voter suppression efforts. I could go on and on.
I think he would rule by a “My way or the highway”-style of governing and use executive orders at every turn.
Too many people have been brutally beaten or killed or thrown off the land that they were sharecropping as they tried to register to vote or tried to help people to register. I think of Selma. I think of Fannie Lou Hamer who was arrested and beaten by the police because she tried to help people to register to vote. I think of Medgar Evers and so many others who were murdered. I think of the vicious beatings received by those at Selma from evil White Supremacists.
I will vote for Hillary because I think Trump has all the qualities of a White Supremacist and would be a disaster for our country.
President Obama has now endorsed Hillary Clinton. I want Obama to ALWAYS have political clout. I can give him that strength and political capital accepting his endorsement of Clinton and to vote for Clinton (even if I have to hold my nose as I do so.) I want President Obama to have a bright future and be a person that will be listened to in the years to come because he will speak from a position of the strength and respect.

I don’t know what it has been like for him from day one when the night before Republicans vowed to vote “no” to any of his initiatives and programs. I still remember the reaction of the nasties out there when he said, “If I had a son, he would look like Trayvon.” He has had to operate in an atmosphere where a member of the Black Causus was spat upon as the group entered the capitol building. People have been jumping the White House fence… one even succeeded in entering the White House with a knife.
He has pushed and pushed for passage of bills. I don’t think he cowered and didn’t try. He DID try. I am disappointed and I imagine the youth are disappointed. But, I am not disappointed in him. I am upset that racism has reared its ugly head in so many forms because he became our President.
I will always be proud of our POTUS and FLOTUS for their class, poise and accomplishments despite all the ugliness directed toward them and resistance to them by nasty racists and nasty politicians.

Obamacare’s Success in Protecting our Finances

One of the critiques we often heard both during and after passage of Obamacare was that health care reform shouldn’t have been the priority while the country was climbing out of the Great Recession. That misses the point that the stimulus package had just been passed and even Democrats were not likely to have backed doing more until it had been fully implemented.
But the critique also misses a point about Obamacare’s impact on our financial challenges. We know that before it passed, healthcare expenses were the leading cause of individual bankruptcies. In addition, the rise in costs were leading to healthcare expenses soaking up unsustainable portions of both state and federal budgets. That is why this statement from members of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York contains some truth.
I don’t necessarily agree that protecting our finances was the primary purpose of the law. Ensuring that people had access to health care supersedes all other goals. But it is important to acknowledge that the main reason that was becoming more and more difficult was financial.
The Feds included that statement as a part of their report demonstrating yet another way Obamacare is succeeding.

What Binds Ryan’s Post-Truth Agenda to Trump’s Post-Policy Politics: Racism

Personally, I’ve never found the dichotomy of establishment vs insurgency to be a very helpful way of understanding what is going on in the Republican Party right now. Another way of looking at the tension is to frame it as a difference between being post-truth and post-policy. Prior to 2008, David Roberts described the post-truth nature of the GOP.
While they worked to reduce taxes on the wealthy, get rid of government regulations and “drown government in the bathtub (all of which benefit the top 1%), they had to convince everyday Americans that their policies would actually help them.
After the Bush/Cheney era and the Great Recession, being post-truth didn’t work very well anymore. Most Americans saw very clearly what happened when the Republican agenda was enacted. Rather than re-think that agenda, they simply went post-policy and obstructed anything President Obama and the Democrats tried to do. In order to rally their ground troops in support, Republican fanned the flames of racism, fear and anger. As I’ve written before, Donald Trump is the epitome of post-policy nihilism.

So, if Donald Trump is post-policy and Paul Ryan is post-truth, where do their agendas come together. Jonathan Chait gave us the answer.
In other words, just as racism has been the fuel that ignites the post-policy positioning of Republicans over the last few years, it has been exploited for decades as a way to divide and conquer support for the progressive agenda.
