    Yes, Nancy Smash

    House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi
said Tuesday that single-payer health insurance is not a litmus test
for Democrats and that she is focused on protecting health-care coverage
    under the Affordable Care Act.

Pelosi (D-Calif.) declined to endorse “Medicare for All” legislation
backed by Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and instead called on Democrats to release a wide range of proposals to fix and improve President Barack Obama’s signature health-care law. Her position on health care is the latest evidence that Democrats in the House are willing to ignore pressure from liberal factions aiming to drive the party further to the left.

“I don’t think it’s a litmus test,” Pelosi said in an interview.
“What we want is to have as many people as possible, everybody, covered, and I think that’s something that we all embrace.”

Pelosi said that she would like a variety of health-care ideas to be
vetted and analyzed by budget scorekeepers but that she thinks none of them will succeed while the ACA is under attack from Republicans.

“Right now I’m protecting the Affordable Care Act,” Pelosi said.
“None of these things, whether it’s Bernie’s or others, can really
prevail unless we protect the Affordable Care Act.”…

“Fortunately, I’m a progressive from San Francisco. I’m a liberal,
and I have my own credibility on these subjects,” Pelosi said. “While we all share our values and priorities and the rest, I think Chuck
[Schumer] and I are both strong Democrats.”

Both Democratic leaders have said they think it is their job to work
with Trump where possible to pass legislation that meets the values of the party. Pelosi said it is her job to get bills passed.

“You can never satisfy everybody,” Pelosi said. “We don’t have a responsibility to get nothing done.”…

“Pivotal Moment in American History”: Sen. Sanders Unveils Medicare-for-All Bill with 15 Co-Sponsors
    SEPTEMBER 13, 2017

Senator Bernie Sanders is slated to introduce universal healthcare legislation today, aimed at expanding Medicare coverage to include every American. In a New York Times op-ed published today, Sanders wrote, “This is a pivotal moment in American history. Do we, as a nation, join the rest of the industrialized world and guarantee comprehensive health care to every person as a human right? Or do we maintain a system that is enormously expensive, wasteful and bureaucratic, and is designed to maximize profits for big insurance companies, the pharmaceutical industry, Wall Street and medical equipment suppliers?” Fifteen senators have already signed on as co-sponsors. The introduction of the Medicare for All Act comes after Republicans repeatedly failed to push through their legislation to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act. The Republicans’ efforts sparked sustained grassroots protests, led by disability activists and healthcare professionals.

So last night I was watching Lawrence O’Donnell on MSNBC and he talked about this bill. He said something really interesting that I hadn’t realized.

Everyone knows, of course, that this bill isn’t going to be legislated. The sole purpose of this bill is to build consensus that healthcare is a right. And, thanks to President Obama, the Democrats, and the ACA, it is now possible to build that consensus. God knows its been a long time coming in this country.

Sanders is very wisely using this window of opportunity when people are fired up because of the seemingly endless GOP attacks on the ACA and their obvious willingness to allow tens of millions of Americans to go without healthcare indefinitely.

O’Donnell talked last night about Senator Kamala Harris being the first co-sponsor, then more senators quickly followed. And if you look at who they are, you are likely to find the 2020 Democratic nominees for president and vice-president.

And this means that the Democratic party is going to make universal healthcare a campaign issue in 2020.

      • Liza says:

What O’Donnell said is that this clearly is the new Democratic leadership in the Senate reaching out to the “Bernie supporters”. While this may be a political necessity, I actually see it as a good thing because I agree that healthcare is a human right.

But I have a couple of other observations.
        1. Bernie wants to pass the torch, he is almost desperate to pass the torch. I respect him for this.
        2. Kamala Harris is a leader.

Howard Dean on young voters: ‘These people are not Democrats’
By Jonathan Capehart September 12 at 9:54 AM

“Trump’s election was the Edmund Pettus Bridge … for those kids.”

As Hillary Clinton hits the road for a book tour to talk about “What Happened” and the 2016 presidential election, the latest episode of “Cape Up” turns to Howard Dean, former Vermont governor and former chairman of the Democratic National Committee who ran for the party’s presidential nomination in 2004, to talk about the future of the Democratic Party. “They see in Trump the destruction of the United States as they have been taught that it was going to exist,” he told me. “The Trump election was essentially a negation of every value that young people have.” Dean believes “those kids” are the “core base now” of the Democratic Party. “The most reliable demographic of our voters are the young people across the board, across racial and ethnic lines,” he said. There’s just one big problem.

    “These people are not Democrats.”
