Thursday Open Thread | Speaker Nancy Pelosi: Trump’s State of the Union is off

Nancy Smash dunked on them..

Game. Blouses. B^tches…….

House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer on Wednesday said President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address “is off.”

“The speaker is the one who invites the president,” Hoyer told CNN, adding, “The State of the Union is off.”

Earlier Wednesday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi sent a letter to Trump telling him to either postpone the annual address — set to be delivered before a joint session of Congress on January 29 — or submit it in writing, citing security concerns linked to the government shutdown.

“Sadly, given the security concerns and unless government re-opens this week, I suggest that we work together to determine another suitable date after government has re-opened for this address or for you to consider delivering your State of the Union address in writing to the Congress on January 29th,” Pelosi said.

“The U.S. Secret Service was designated as the lead federal agency responsible for coordinating, planning, exercising, and implementing security for National Special Security Events by Public Law 106-544, December 19, 2000,” Pelosi added. “However, both the U.S. Secret Service and the Department of Homeland Security have not been funded for 26 days now — with critical departments hamstrung by furloughs.”

A representative for Hoyer told INSIDER he had “not read Speaker Pelosi’s letter and mischaracterized it” when he told CNN that the State of the Union address “is off.”

The government shutdown, the longest in US history, is a product of Trump’s insistence on obtaining funding for a wall he wishes to build along the US-Mexico border. Democrats have refused to grant the funding.

If Trump were to deliver the State of the Union address on January 29 amid the impasse, it would be the first to occur during a government shutdown.

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment from INSIDER.

President Donald Trump directed his longtime attorney Michael Cohen to lie to Congress about negotiations to build a Trump Tower in Moscow, according to two federal law enforcement officials involved in an investigation of the matter.

Trump also supported a plan, set up by Cohen, to visit Russia during the presidential campaign, in order to personally meet President Vladimir Putin and jump-start the tower negotiations. “Make it happen,” the sources said Trump told Cohen.

Trump’s Treasury Dept will be recalling 46,000 IRS workers to send out tax refunds. Here’s a longish thread about why that’s illegal and why you should care.

Warning: this gets in the weeds, but hopefully will help explain the relevant law + context. /1https://t.co/WaXE0Ca3aB

Trying to shift shutdown blame, White House slams Dems’ Puerto Rico trip
    01/17/19 10:18 AM
    By Steve Benen

The Wall Street Journal reported yesterday on the divisions among White House staffers on the best strategy for the ongoing government shutdown, and it included an odd quote from one of Donald Trump’s aides.

“Everyone wants to know what the president is doing,” an unnamed senior White House official said. “Let me tell you what he’s not doing. He’s not going to Puerto Rico.”

If it seems like we’ve heard this talking point a lot this week, it’s not your imagination. On Tuesday, a reporter asked the president about the status of negotiations with congressional Democrats. “I’ve been here all weekend,” Trump replied. “A lot of the Democrats were in Puerto Rico, celebrating something. I don’t know, maybe they’re celebrating the shutdown.”

As Vox noted, “Press secretary Sarah Sanders, White House counselor Kellyanne Conway, and White House spokesperson Hogan Gidley all also attacked Democrats for making the trip.”

I think we’re supposed to believe that Democrats blew off negotiations to have fun in the sun in January. In reality, there were no negotiations to blow off and the trip had a substantive purpose. As the Washington Post reported, the trip, months in the making, was designed to offer a congressional delegation the latest information on Hurricane Maria recovery efforts.

According to members who participated, the three-day event featured informational sessions on the damage from the 2017 hurricane, meetings with Gov. Ricardo Rosselló, presentations on the controversial oversight board created to meet the island’s bond obligations, and information on how residents of territories can’t access many of the government services available to residents of the 50 states.

This is where ‘ Mother’ works:

The school makes parents sign an agreement, available online, which states that the school reserves the right to refuse admission to, or remove from the school, any pupil who participates in, supports or condones “sexual immorality, homosexual activity or bi-sexual activity”.

A separate employment application makes any potential applicants promise not to engage in “premarital sex, cohabitation, extramarital sex, homosexual or lesbian sexual activity, polygamy, transgender identity, any other violation of the unique roles of male and female”.

In Virginia there is minimal statewide protection for LGBT people. It is legal for private employers to discriminate on the basis of sexual and gender identity.

The document signed by parents also asks that they do not “propagate doctrines” that are not in agreement with the belief that “God created the heavens and earth and all life by direct act, and not by undirected evolutionary process”. The job application asks potential teachers to agree that “a wife is commanded to submit to her husband”.

Trump wants you to fund a wall where he doesn’t know how long it is, he doesn’t know what it will cost, and he doesn’t own the property he wants to put it on. He wants an unlimited slush fund for “general building: TBD” – it’s insane.
