When you dig….it gets worsešš¤
1. There are two layers of context ā one local, one national ā that everyone must first understand before they understand Tyre Nicholsā murder.
— The Editorial Board (@johnastoehr) January 31, 2023
3. Layer No. 1: Nichols was the fourth person to die at the hands of Memphis police over the last five weeks. According to the Memphis Commercial Appeal, those killings are under investigation by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.

5. The Rev. Earle Fisher, a prominent figure in local Black politics, said: āAs much as they want to try to isolate this, we have been saying this is part and parcel of the larger system and structure of policing.
— The Editorial Board (@johnastoehr) January 31, 2023
7. Layer No. 2: Police around the country killed more Americans in 2022 than any year since 2013. At least 1,176 people died at the hands of law enforcement last year, according to Mapping Police Violence.

9. Ninety-six percent of the deaths were from police officers shooting people. Of the total number, the victims were disproportionately Black (nearly a quarter). The Black American population is only 13 percent.

13. This context is what the defenders of the white-power status quo would rather everyone did not understand, because if they did understand the existence of āan institutionalized police culture that is anti-Black,ā they might come to agree with the critics.

15. If something evil is institutionalized, then more needs doing than holding accountable a few cops here and there.

17. As if proving my point, Memphis Police Chief Cerelyn āCJā Davis hurried over to CNN to say, look, five Black cops killed a Black man so obviously institutionalized anti-Black bias canāt possibly explain

When a white cop kills a black victim, whites are quick to defend the cop and blame the victim. I have never seen the black community do that. Iāve never seen the black community make excuses for a black celebrity or black cops who break the law.

First article I’ve seen that the ex-girlfriend allegation is being investigated. Of course, this is the Memphis PD investigating itself.
Tyre Nichols’ Rumored Connection to Cop’s Ex-Wife Under Investigation
BY MATTHEW IMPELLI ON 2/1/23 AT 12:37 PM EST
The Memphis Police Department is currently investigating rumors regarding a possible connection between Tyre Nichols and the ex-wife or ex-girlfriend of one of the Memphis cops arrested and charged in Nichols’ death.
On Wednesday morning, Newsweek asked the Shelby County district attorney’s office if it is investigating possible rumors connecting Nichols to the ex-girlfriend or ex-wife of former Memphis cop Demetrius Haley. Additionally, Newsweek asked about rumors that Haley sent photos of Nichols to his ex-wife following the violent arrest of the 29-year-old Black man.
“All of this is still under investigation. Those are the things, along with the participation of others, that [are] now the subject of our investigation,” a spokesperson for the Shelby County district attorney told Newsweek in response.
Erica Williams, the director of communications at the Shelby County district attorney’s office, clarified to Newsweek that rumors about Nichols having a connection to the woman have not been “confirmed.”
“We know that there have been questions about other officers and Fire Department personnel on the scene, persons remotely operating cameras, the potential of false reporting, among other things. We are now at the stage of our investigation where we are looking into all of these matters,” Williams told Newsweek.

Tyre Nichols funeral live updates: Officials renew calls for police reform as Nichols’ family celebrates his life
Nicholsā funeral service was held five days after the city of Memphis released videos showing the brutal police assault on him Jan. 7.
From the article:
The Rev. Al Sharpton said that as they died, both Tyre Nichols and George Floyd called for their mothers, seeking home and comfort.
āAll he wanted to do was get home,ā Sharpton said.
āHome is not just a physical location. Home is where you are at peace. Home is where youāre not vulnerable. Home is where everything is alright,ā he said.
āAll he wanted to do was get home,ā says Rev. Sharpton on Tyre Nichols
āHe said, all I want to do is get home. I come to Memphis to say the reason I keep going is, all Iām trying to do is get home,ā Sharpton said. āI want to get where they canāt treat me with a double standard ā Iām trying to get home. I want to get where they canāt call me names no more ā I want to get home. I want to get where they canāt shoot and ask questions later ā Iām trying to get home. Every Black in America stands up every day trying to get home.”
Well, truth is that great river that runs under everything and eventually bursts through whatever is holding it in.
We’re going to know a lot about the Memphis PD before too long.
But just using common sense, those cops had no intention of throwing their own lives away. Didn’t cross their minds. They expected NO consequences. Why is that?
ā..In Harlem, Negro policemen are feared more than whites, for they have more to prove and fewer ways to prove it…ā

A conservative group blocked student-loan forgiveness because 2 borrowers wanted more relief than they qualified for. Here’s why it thinks no one else should get to benefit from Biden’s plan.
Story by asheffey@businessinsider.com
The Supreme Court is hearing two lawsuits that blocked student-debt relief at the end of February.
One of the cases involves two student-loan borrowers who sued because they didn’t qualify for the full $20,000 amount of relief.
Here are some key points that group argued in its case to the Supreme Court.
We have officially entered the month when the nation’s highest court willĀ take on President Joe Biden’s student-loan forgiveness planĀ ā and the groups opposing it are readying their arguments.
At the end of August, BidenĀ announcedĀ his plan to cancel up $20,000 in student debt for Pell Grant recipients making under $125,000 a year, and up to $10,000 in relief for other federal borrowers within the same income cap. Just over a month later, on October 10, the Job Creators Network Foundation Legal Action Fund ā a conservative organization āĀ filed a lawsuitĀ seeking to block the relief.Ā
The group filed the suit on behalf of two student-loan borrowers: one who didn’t qualify for the full $20,000 in debt relief since he was never a Pell Grant recipient, and another who has commercially-held student loans that do not qualify for Biden’s loan forgiveness.
On Friday, itĀ submitted its argumentĀ to the Supreme Court explaining why it thinks Biden’s debt relief plan is illegal and should be blocked ā especially because the two borrowers it is representing cannot benefit fully from the route the administration took to enact this relief.
