Mitch’s capitulation tells us two things. First, he’s still terrified of Trump. The culprit? Donald Trump, who has been urging Republicans to reject any deal, on the apparent theory that any compromise with Democrats will be insufficiently anti-immigrant by definition.
This has been widely seen as evidence that Trump wants border chaos to continue to use against President Biden in the election. But this whole episode reveals something else too: What Trump and the MAGA right really fear above all is a system that might function better without resorting to the maximally cruel and extreme restrictions they see as the only acceptable “solution.”
Punchbowl News reports that McConnell privately told GOP senators that with Trump winning the GOP nomination, the “politics have changed” on immigration, and a deal might “undermine him.” As Punchbowl notes, McConnell is “acknowledging Trump’s continued stranglehold on the GOP.”
Meanwhile, CNN reports that McConnell believes the GOP is in a “quandary” because Senate Republicans are divided on any deal, and anything the Senate passes would be opposed by House Republicans, who only want their own wildly radical border bill.
McConnell insists that talks are still ongoing. But at the very least, he is in the process of surrendering to the idea that Trump is in control of outcomes here.
So, I want you to get clear. Because, a resolution at the border would take that issue off the table for the GOP in November. And, if they don’t have the brown hoards at the Southern border on the verge of invasion, what else do they have to run on?
Time and time again, the Republican Party is showing you who they are. They are shirking their duties as elected officials to do the bidding of this Orange Criminal.

Two teenagers were killed in a shooting under a busy “L” station in the Loop, according to Chicago Police and Fire officials.
Around 12:25 p.m., the teens — 16- and 17-year-old boys — were leaving Innovations High School with about four other people, CPD Deputy Chief Jon Hein said Friday. As the group was in the first block of North Wabash Avenue, two vehicles pulled up and several people exited before opening fire.
Each boy was shot in the chest, and the older boy was also shot in the hip. The coat of a woman standing nearby was also grazed by a bullet, but she declined medical attention, according to police.
The two were taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in critical condition, CFD spokesperson Larry Langford said. They were pronounced dead a short time later, according to Hein.

The face of Japanese beauty is now a Ukrainian-born model — at least according to pageant judges who sparked a debate on cultural identity by naming 26-year-old Karolina Shiino as Miss Japan on Monday.
The annual Miss Nippon contest, which takes its title from the country’s Japanese name, awards the tiara to the contestant representing the “Foremost Beauty of All Japanese Women,” according to the organizers’ website. The decision to pick a winner with European heritage has raised questions about beauty standards and what it means to be Japanese.
“I wanted to be recognized as a Japanese person,” Shiino, a naturalized citizen who has lived in Nagoya since she was 5 years old and speaks fluent Japanese, told CNN in Tokyo.
