I’m sorry to hit you with another nightmare story, but this is important: Texas kept a woman in jail for nearly five months after she miscarried in a public bathroom.
Five. Months.
According to Bexar County court records, Mallori Patrice Strait was arrested for ‘abuse of a corpse’ on December 19, 2024. She was just released last week, after prosecutors dropped the case due to insufficient evidence.
I said this on Friday, but I’ll say it again: We don’t need to imagine a dystopian future where women are being used as incubators and arrested for miscarriages, because that future is already here.
I first wrote about Strait’s story in January, pointing out the similarities to Brittany Watts’ case. Watts was arrested for ‘abuse of a corpse’ in Ohio after she lost her pregnancy at home. Her story was splashed across local crime pages, with lurid headlines declaring that she had “clogged” her toilet trying to “flush” a newborn.
Strait was treated the same way—with sensationalist headlines stating that she “spent hours” trying to flush her “baby girl” down the toilet. They even published her mug shot. If only it ended there.
After a judge set her bond at $100,000, Strait spent the next five months—including her 34th birthday—behind bars. While she was in jail, a local crisis pregnancy center took custody of her fetal remains. They named the fetus, and gave it a public funeral. (I know, nauseating.)
Just days ago, the district attorney finally filed a motion to dismiss. The Bexar County Medical Examiner had determined Strait had miscarried and that her fetus died in utero. The DA’s office said there was “no direct evidence” that Straight tried to flush anything.
So why the fuck was she in jail?
We know why: The people criminalized for their pregnancy outcomes tend to be marginalized—they’re often women of color, low income, immigrants, unhoused, or have substance abuse issues. Black women, in particular, are targeted by law enforcement and hospital staff. (When someone is arrested on pregnancy-related charges, they’re most often turned in by a healthcare provider.)
These prosecutions follow a very predictable pattern, so we know who is most at risk.
But let’s recap for a moment: Texas arrested a woman for a miscarriage, jailed her for nearly half a year, let an anti-abortion group name and bury her fetus—and then quietly dropped the charges once they realized they never had a case to begin with.

The next story enrages me to no end. This is another example of BLACK WOMEN BEING USED AS MEDICAL EXPERIMENTS.

I’ve tried to write this section a hundred times, and there’s just no gentle way to say it: A brain-dead woman in Georgia is being kept ‘alive’ against her family’s wishes—because of the state’s abortion ban.
Adriana Smith, a 30-year-old nurse and mother, was declared brain dead more than 90 days ago after suffering multiple blood clots in her brain. But because she was 9 weeks pregnant at the time, Georgia law is forcing her body to be used as a vessel—kept on life support until the fetus is viable.
It was this sentence from 11 Alive that made me want to throw up: “The family said doctors told them they are not legally allowed to consider other options.”
They are violating this woman’s body and devastating her family. Her mother, April Newkirk, says, “It’s torture for me. I see my daughter breathing, but she’s not there.”
And the fetus—unsurprisingly—is not doing well. The doctors told Newkirk that there is fluid on the fetus’ brain and that he may not be able to see, walk—or even survive—once he’s born.
“This decision should’ve been left to us,” Newkirk said. “Now we’re left wondering what kind of life he’ll have—and we’re going to be the ones raising him.”
Naturally, the state isn’t covering this family’s medical bills: They’re going to be financially devastated by this horror. (I’m trying to track down a GoFundMe and will share it as soon as I can.)
I don’t know how many different ways they can make clear that they don’t see us as human beings. I’m just heart-broken.

A huge majority of Americans say that more people should work in manufacturing – but that they, personally, don’t want to.
There’s a huge disconnect between how most people think of “manufacturing,” versus the reality. Manufacturing jobs are often physically and mentally demanding, repetitive and offer limited upward trajectory. Despite offering reasonably good wages – the average is roughly $30/hour today – there were over 400,000 vacant manufacturing jobs around the United States in March of 2025. Finding workers is one of the industry’s biggest challenges.
A lot of this disconnect can be explained by simple nostalgia. On some level, many people believe in a sepia-toned “glory days” version of history, where manufacturing jobs were the ticket to safety and stability. This is the root of a common meme about how, supposedly, Americans could once easily afford a big house, two kids, cars, vacations and college tuitions all on one income. That was *never* true in reality, except for very rare exceptions – it’s based more on Nickelodeon TV reruns than actual events.
But that kind of pop culture is how many people construct their beliefs about the past, the present, and their sense of gain or loss. That type of nostalgia is what creates disconnects like this one.
