Open Thread | Our Generals Were Called Back to Washington…FOR THIS?!?

It really didn’t hit me that Generals of the US Military, who were stationed, ALL OVER THE WORLD, had to come back to the United States for this mess.
Those Generals swore an oath to the UNITED STATES CONSTITUTION. They better remember that.

The Generals were silent.

And if you don’t like what I’m saying, you can leave the room. Of course, there goes your rank, there goes your future. but you just feel nice and loose.”

From The Guardian:

At an address of assembled generals and admirals, Pete Hegseth, the US defense secretary, outlined changes to military policy and philosophy in a set of 10 directives meant to change organizational culture around fitness, race and gender, describing the previous state of military affairs as the “woke department”.

Donald Trump followed Hegseth’s call to embrace the virtues of lethality as a doctrine with a suggestion buried in an hour-long campaign-style speech that the gathering of officers and senior enlisted advisers should consider targeting US cities and civilian populations as a training exercise.

“We should use some of these dangerous cities as training grounds for our military – national guard, but military – because we’re going into Chicago very soon, that’s a big city with an incompetent governor,” Trump said, attacking JB Pritzker, the Illinois governor.

Trump went on to describe soldiers he had seen in media accounts who had been spit upon who “want to knock the hell out of a person, but he’s not allowed to do anything … I say: ‘They spit, we hit’. Is that OK? I think so, they spit – it’s a new thing – ‘They spit, we hit’”. Trump said that immigration enforcement agents, facing people throwing bricks at their vehicles, should retaliate. “I say it here, you can get out of that car and you do whatever the hell you want to do”.

He also defended the navy’s sinking of Venezuelan boats, rather than attempting to interdict suspected drug runners as required by international law and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. “Every boat kills about 25,000 people,” he claimed without evidence.

Trump’s speech was packed with campaign references to his electoral victory and the perceived shortcomings of his political adversaries. The assemblage of uniformed officers sat stonefaced, expressionless and inscrutable with few smiles. Trump’s attacks on Joe Biden were met with silence. Some of his lines elicited polite ripples of laughter.

This farm bailout situation is so breathtakingly foolish, it’s hard to know where to start.

The US farm sector has been so insulated from the consequences of its own actions for so long. Is it even capable of learning from its mistakes at this point?

Boyle: Ironically, Mike Johnson has one of the largest medicaid populations of any district nationwide. But I do want to stress that, yes, this is dramatic and will be awful if you’re on medicaid, will be awful if you’re on one of the Obamacare exchanges, will be awful if you’re on medicare. But it’s actually the health care of all of us, regardless of how you obtain it. Because even for those of us who might not be on one of those programs I just mentioned, premiums are set to rise. This will basically set back every attempt, no matter how limited the effect, we’ve undertaken to deal with sexual harassment, assault, and rape over the past decade or so. As well as every effort the military has made to combat racism, antisemitism, Islamophobia, homophobia, etc. What Hegseth is doing is setting the conditions for fratricide – usually non-lethal, but sometimes lethal – where the worst Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, and Marines are empowered to prey on each other. Sexual harassment, assault, and rape is going to increase. Attacks on personnel who are or are perceived to be LGBTQ too. We’re going to see increased injuries and other problems (re)emerge within basic training. Suicides are going to go up. All of which will make the US military weaker, less effective, and less lethal.
