Legend..Icon…Dolly Parton Dead at 80

This just HURTS.

Dolly Parton, country music icon, dies at 80
Her death came after in May 2026 she announced she was canceling a Las Vegas show and said she’d been undergoing treatment for kidney stones for several years.

Dolly Parton, who rose from a loving if impoverished upbringing in the mountains of East Tennessee to become the “Queen of Country” music, a Hollywood star and a beloved American icon, has died, her family announced on Tuesday.

Parton was 80.

Parton’s nephew, Brian Seaver, announced the news in a video posted on her Instagram.

“My name is Brin Seaver, son of Cassie Parton, and I’m representing the Parton and Owens family today announcing the passing of my aunt, Dolly Rebecca Parton Dean, Sister, Sis and Granny to one generation and Gigi to the next,” Seaver said in a video.

“This video announcement is something Dolly asked of me years ago, before I fully absorbed it as a future reality. As her head of security for more than two decades, a role my father Larry held before me, I have imagined the heaviness of this moment but haven’t truly felt it til now,” he added.

Her death came after Parton suddenly announced in May 2026 that she was canceling a Las Vegas show and said she’d been undergoing treatment for kidney stones for several years.

“Lord, they dig more stones out of me a year than the rock quarry in Rockwood, Tennessee,” Parton said in a statement. “But seriously, my immune system and my digestive system got all out of whack over the past couple three years, and they’re working real hard on rebuilding and strengthening those and hopefully I’ll be up to snuff again soon.”

During her more than 60-year career, Parton sold more than 100 million records and won 11 Grammy Awards, making her one of the best-selling musical performers of all time.

Parton also became a star on the silver screen, gaining a whole new audience and critical acclaim when she brought her Southern charm to movies like “9 to 5” (she wrote and sang the theme song), “Steel Magnolias” and “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas.”

Bedecked in blonde bouffant hairdos and never without her makeup, Parton also became one of the nation’s best known brands who parried questions about her hourglass figure and augmented breasts with her signature self-deprecating wit.

“It costs a lot of money to look this cheap,” Parton once said.

Parton was also a shrewd businesswoman who amassed an estimated $650 million fortune and maintained creative control in the cutthroat and male-dominated music industry. She presided over an entertainment empire that included the Dollywood theme park. And she was a devoted philanthropist who launched the Dollywood Foundation to provide poverty relief and fund educational programs in her native East Tennessee.

Never shy at expressing her Christian faith, Parton was also a public supporter of the LGBTQ community who advocated for marriage equality and spoke up in defense of transgender people.

“I keep saying: If you’re the fine Christian that you think you are, why are you judging people,” Parton said during a 2017 interview with Larry King. “That’s God’s job.”

Along those lines, she jokingly told a British outlet a few years earlier: “I think gay couples should be allowed to marry. They should suffer just like us heterosexuals.”

Through it all, Parton leaned on the love of her life, her husband Carl Thomas Dean, who died in March 2025 at age 82 and who, from the moment they married in 1966, happily ceded the spotlight to his world-famous wife.

“Words can’t do justice to the love we shared for over 60 years,” Parton said in July 2025.

Born January 19, 1946, in a one-room cabin on the banks of the Little Pigeon River near the town of Sevierville, Parton was the fourth of 12 children.

Her father, Robert Lee Parton, could not read or write and often supplemented the family’s meager income from their farm by working constructions jobs.

Her mother, Avie Lee Parton, ran the household and was fond of singing traditional Appalachian ballads. The future superstar said it was her mother who instilled in her a love for music.

At age 6, Parton wrote her first song titled “Little Tiny Tassel Top.”

And it was at church that Parton first started performing. By age 13, Parton was singing on local radio and television shows and made her debut at the Grand Ole Opry, where she met Johnny Cash.

“Dolly Parton has one of the most distinctive voices in American pop music,” Katherine Dacey, a professor at the Berklee College of Music, told NBC News before Parton’s death was announced. “Her high soprano voice gets its distinctive character from her fast vibrato and vocal twang.”

The day after she graduated from Sevier County High School in 1964, Parton headed to Nashville where she first made her mark writing songs for other performers, some of them with her uncle Bill Owens.

In songs like “Tennessee Homesick Blues” and “Coat of Many Colors,” Parton drew inspiration from her hardscrabble childhood.

Three years after leaving school, Parton released her first record, “Hello, I’m Dolly” and caught the attention of country star Porter Wagoner and became a regular on his shows.

Then, in 1974, Parton broke out on her own when she topped the country charts for the first time with a song she wrote and performed called “Jolene.” She later revealed it was inspired by a bank teller who flirted with her husband when they were newlyweds.

Her next four singles were also country chart toppers and one of them, “I Will Always Love You,” later became a huge hit for Whitney Houston in 1992.

In 1977, Parton released her first self-produced album “New Harvest…First Harvest” and became the first female country artist to have an album sell over a million copies.

Parton also won her first Grammy with a single from that record called “Here You Come Again.”

Hollywood beckoned and 1980 Parton made her film debut in “9 to 5” which earned her two Golden Globe nominations for her acting and Oscar nomination for the title song, which many consider a feminist anthem.

Parton, who earned a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1984, made several more movies and performed around the world, but she always returned to the music that first made her famous — and to the hollers of East Tennessee where she was born and where she and her husband made their home.

“Never ignore your roots — your home or your hair,” she once said.

In 1986, Parton opened the Dollywood theme park in the Great Smokey Mountains near her hometown. The 165 acres includes rollercoasters, a bald eagle sanctuary and music and crafts that pay tribute to the region’s Appalachian heritage.

Roger Ebert on meeting Dolly.

“In Dallas for the premier of ‘9 to 5’, I had an uncanny experience, and on the plane home to Chicago I confessed it to Siskel: I had been granted a private half hour with Dolly Parton, and as we spoke I was filled with a strange ethereal grace. This was not spiritual, nor was it sexual. It was healing and comforting. Gene listened and said, “Roger, I felt the exact same thing during my interview with her.” We looked at each other. What did this mean? Neither one of us ever felt that feeling again. From time to time we would refer to it in wonder.”

“People who hate each other love Dolly Parton,” culture critic Fran Lebowitz once said of the late country icon, who died at 80 yesterday. The Tennessee singer/songwriter, actor, and philanthropist hailed from a vanishing class: the 20th century monocultural phenomenon who attained household name status that never lost its luster. Parton pushed back against the roles available to women in music in the ’60s, raising eyebrows by performing incredible songs she wrote herself, and then met the evolving tastes and struggles of subsequent eras with the same open heart. She remained a light of genteel humor and common-sense acceptance no matter the cause, steadfast in her faith and also resolutely in support of groups ostracized in religious communities.

A married church lady figure who could appear at Studio 54 and on the cover of Playboy without losing the Grand Ole Opry and 700 Club crowds now unites us in grief. Critic Craig Jenkins writes: “What has long been clear is that Parton represented the lasting good that’s possible in America.”

Dolly Parton just passed away at 80 years old. She spent her final years as a CAREGIVER, doing what 63 million Americans do every day: caring full-time for the person she loved most – her husband of nearly 60 years, Carl Dean.

Before she passed, Dolly admitted something that I found totally heartbreaking: while caregiving for him, she completely neglected her own health, skipping doctors visits and ignoring her symptoms.

I think Dolly’s honesty points to three hard truths caregivers face. First, chronic physical decline, as AARP finds 1 in 4 caregivers say their own health has suffered. Second, the “widowhood effect,” where a surviving spouse faces a significantly higher risk of death in the 12 to 18 months after their partner passes. And third, the sudden loss of purpose when intensive caregiving abruptly ends.

Dolly died about a year after her husband. She leaves behind a rich legacy and a life of purpose and helping others. May she rest in peace. 🙏

If you are caregiving for a spouse or an aging parent, please remember what they tell you on airplanes: put on your own oxygen mask first. Taking care of your health isn’t selfish but absolutely necessary.

Please share this with a caregiver who needs to hear the reminder today, and let’s honor Dolly’s legacy. ❤️

Dolly Parton, among a thousand other amazing things she did in her life, gifted over 330 million books to kids through her Imagination Library program. Her passing is a tremendous loss to the world, but you can support the program today to keep it going imaginationlibrary.com

You know y’all complain about the kids not knowing how to read, but Dolly was trying to teach them. She was mailing books to the children. She was working on it.

Oh, Dolly Parton. What a loss of a bright light and a beloved human. Beyond from her beautiful music–what a talented composer–her commitment to literacy means so much. She came from poverty and family members who could not read–and she funded the free distribution of millions of chidren’s books.

We would got children’s books in the mail from her Imagination Library for months because the people who lived in the apartment before had a child. We would donate them to the local library because some kid should still read them.
My kid said the world is a little worse now and they’re right.

    RIP 🕊️

    There’ll never be another Dolly.

    She was a real one.

From Civil Rights to literacy to the empowerment of women…she always stood in the gap.

The world lost an angel today.
