I know some people say that this is a hint for people to start growing their own food. And, if you like to garden, fine. But, what about those of us who don’t want to garden? Who just want to be able to go to the grocery store and be pretty certain that when we buy food..IT WON’T MAKE US SICK OR TRY TO KILL US!

That isn’t the argument anyone who actually understands food safety is making.
(And I’m going to be using a lot of big words and adjectives, so this may go over your head; you illiterate clowns)The problem isn’t that a recall happened. The problem is what happened upstream, how broadly that failure can propagate, how quickly we can detect it, and whether the regulatory infrastructure exists to catch problems before they become recalls.
A recall is the fire alarm. It is not proof the building has excellent fire prevention. And that’s where the comparison falls apart.
Our food supply chain has become extraordinarily consolidated. When one large supplier has a problem, that problem doesn’t necessarily remain confined to one facility or one brand. It can move through processors, distributors, restaurants, schools, hospitals and retailers across multiple states.
One failure can become a force multiplier. That’s not the same risk profile as a small, isolated recall involving a limited distribution network. And then there’s the part everyone seems remarkably determined not to discuss: regulatory capacity.
Food safety doesn’t run on show/vibes or “theatre” and corporate assurances. It requires inspectors. Sampling. Testing. Surveillance. Investigations. Traceability. Follow-up.
If you reduce the capacity to perform those functions while simultaneously relying on increasingly concentrated supply chains, you haven’t maintained the same level of food safety; You’ve increased the consequences of a missed failure.
And here’s the really scary part:
We only recall what we find.
A recall tells us about the contamination that was detected. It tells us nothing about contamination that wasn’t sampled, wasn’t inspected, wasn’t reported, wasn’t connected to an illness cluster, or wasn’t identified until the product had already traveled halfway across the country.
That’s why professionals like me are concerned. (And others who know this but seem determined to ignore it)
Nobody is shocked that food recalls exist. We’ve had them forever. Anyone who has actually worked in food safety knows that.
What is concerning is the combination of increasingly concentrated supply chains, potentially diminished inspection capacity, and the enormous distribution networks those failures can travel through.
The question isn’t, “Have we always had recalls?”
The question is:
Are we making the consequences of a single failure substantially larger while weakening our ability to detect that failure early?
Because if your answer to that is, “Shut up, there are always recalls,” you aren’t making a food safety argument. You’re just yelling at the smoke detector because you don’t like what it’s telling you. And I you’re an idiot.
