New: Google co-founder Sergey Brin has funneled just over $100 million to a group trying to defeat a one-time state tax on California’s billionaires this November.
That seems like a lot of money, except Brin’s net worth – estimated around $270 billion, top five globally, according to Bloomberg’s billionaires index – means he’d face a nearly $14 billion hit under the tax, which proposes a 5% charge on the total assets of state residents with a net worth over $1 billion. In those terms, $102 million for a chance to avoid the trouble seems like a decent investment ahead of California voters heading to the polls in November.

The Protect College Sports Act is named for athletes, but it protects everyone except them.
At its core is an antitrust exemption that would let schools and the NCAA go back to suppressing athletes’ pay and shutting down any chance of negotiating as equals.
This bill caps what athletes can earn, limits their rights as workers, and gives them no real seat at the table, while doing little to rein in the spending of coaches, conferences, and institutions.
Critics say the pay restrictions would fall hardest on Black athletes, and the system would largely police itself. If you want to protect college athletes, Congress should write a bill with them, not for them, and reject this one.

🚨 BREAKING: Texas state Rep. Gina Hinojosa has filed an official request to inspect unredacted communications between Gov. Greg Abbott’s office and Elon Musk and his companies, after roughly 1,400 pages of records released last year were heavily redacted.
The state previously argued that portions of the communications could be withheld because they contained “intimate and embarrassing information.”
In a letter sent to Abbott’s office today, Hinojosa invokes a provision of the Texas Public Information Act governing information requested by lawmakers for legislative purposes. She is seeking the same records previously released to the Texas Newsroom, but “without any redactions whatsoever,” including material deemed “embarrassing” or “intimate.”
Hinojosa says the records could shed new light on Musk’s relationship with Abbott, including his companies’ lucrative state contracts and tax incentives, as well as Musk’s campaign contributions. She argues Musk has turned Texas into a corporate playground and says greater transparency is needed to expose what she describes as corruption in Abbott’s relationship with powerful tech interests.
She is requesting that Abbott’s office arrange an inspection of both the redacted and unredacted records on or around October 13.
Now Texans may finally learn what was considered so “intimate and embarrassing” that it was kept from public view.
