David Gergen and Co. Continue the ‘Obama Needs to Move to the Center’ Nonsense

As predicted by Steve Benen, here’s the AC360 panel discussing the midterm elections, and one David Gergen claiming that President Obama isn’t going to be able to get his “liberal agenda” passed now and that he’s going to have to “come to the middle” if the Republicans take back the Congress. Sorry David, but President Obama already “came to the middle”, in fact he unfortunately started there with way too many of the bills he either got passed or attempted to get passed and all he got in return was Republican obstruction.
Apparently Gergen and thinks that “coming to the middle” means passing a Republican agenda.
COOPER: Ed and David, you both have seen in White Houses, you know, a president who, going into midterm elections, faced a tough battle. And different presidents react differently: Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton. How do you think — if the House goes back to Republican — David, let’s start with you — how do you think that affects President Obama? How — what changes?
GERGEN: Well, in the first place, he’s not going to be able to get his liberal agenda through. That’s just — that’s going to be finished.
And — but the question is whether he’s going to come to the middle and whether Republicans will do that, and we can actually get some real progress, not only on jobs, but on the deficits. I think it could be — it could be serious gridlock, or we could go the other way. I don’t think we know the answer to that yet.
I do think, if he demonizes John Boehner, to go back to the point just made, I think it could become harder to work with him.
I’d love for David Gergen to explain how John Boehner could be any harder to work with than he has been already. The President needs to do more of and not less of what he did during his Labor Day speech with calling out the GOP for their obstruction, no matter what the talking heads like the ones on this panel had to say. And John Ridley, you should be ashamed of yourself for saying you’d like to give the Republicans a chance to show what they stand for, like you don’t know already. What ought to be nerve-wracking for you is what happens to our economy if the Republicans are allowed to put any fixes on hold for the next two years.

Tim Pawlenty’s decision to turn down some of the money associated with the health care overhaul was probably good national Republican politics, but it seems to have proved a headache at home, and today he announced that he’s asking for $260 million in federal funds:
Gov. Tim Pawlenty has decided to accept about $260 million in federal medical assistance aid after directing state agencies to avoid some federal grants associated with the health care overhaul. …
Pawlenty’s letter to Sebelius says the Medicaid dollars “reflect current and longstanding Minnesota policy objectives and commitments.” He also notes that Minnesota pays more to the federal government than it gets back.
My feeling will not be hurt if Valerie Jarrett were POTUS’ Chief of Staff.

WASHINGTON — The White House says President Barack Obama will mark the ninth anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks at the Pentagon.
Obama spokesman Robert Gibbs says Vice President Joe Biden will travel to New York for Saturday’s anniversary. First Lady Michelle Obama will join former first lady Laura Bush in Pennsylvania for ceremonies marking the crash of United Flight 93.
Obama also spoke at the remembrance ceremony at the Pentagon last year, the first anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks since he took office.

The nation faces a nasty dual deficit problem: a painful jobs deficit in the near term and an unsustainable budget deficit over the medium and long term. This month, the Senate will be debating an issue with significant implications for both — what to do about the Bush-era tax cuts scheduled to expire at the end of the year.
In the face of the dueling deficits, the best approach is a compromise: extend the tax cuts for two years and then end them altogether. Ideally only the middle-class tax cuts would be continued for now. Getting a deal in Congress, though, may require keeping the high-income tax cuts, too. And that would still be worth it.

Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley to retire, speculation swirls around Rahm Emanuel candidacy
Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley’s surprise announcement today that he would not seek a seventh term in 2011 immediately set off speculation that White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel would enter the race.
“In the end, this was a personal decision, no more, no less,” Daley said in Chicago Tuesday. “I’ve been thinking about this for the last several months…It just feels right.”
Emanuel, in a statement released this afternoon, made no mention of his interest (or lack thereof) in the job.
“While Mayor Daley surprised me today with his decision to not run for reelection, I have never been surprised by his leadership, dedication and tireless work on behalf of the city and the people of Chicago,” said Emanuel
A senior Obama Administration official said Emanuel is likely to run for the post. “I’d be shocked if he doesn’t run,” the official said.
Emanuel, who held a Chicago-area Congressional district prior to being named to his current post in late 2008, has long had designs on the mayor’s office.
“I would like to run for the mayor of the city of Chicago,” Emanuel told talk show host Charlie Rose in April. “That has always been an aspiration of mine even when I was in the House of Representatives.”
(We wrote at the time that if Daley didn’t retire, Emanuel’s political options were very limited.)
Conversations with plugged-in Chicago Democrats — and boy are there lots of them! — make clear that if Emanuel ran, he would be the clear frontrunner although almost certainly wouldn’t have the field entirely to himself.
Emanuel’s ties to Daley go all the way back to 1989 when he served as finance chairman for the younger Daley’s successful bid. (Daley’s father — Richard J. Daley — held the mayor’s office for two decades before dying on the job in 1976.)
Those strong ties to Daley — and his political machine — coupled with the former Congressman’s demonstrated fundraising prowess and the behind-the-scenes role that President Obama could play in his home state make Emanuel a strong potential candidate.
That said, there are untold numbers of politicians who believe they have what it takes to be the city’s next mayor and at least a few of them aren’t likely to bow out even if Emanuel gets in.
Among the serious names mentioned: Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart, state Attorney General Lisa Madigan, Cook County Commissioner Forrest Claypool, Cook County Assessor Jim Houlihan, 2004 Senate candidate Gery Chico and Reps. Mike Quigley, Luis Gutierrez and Jesse Jackson Jr.

With polls and prognosticators predicting a massive Republican rout — and the likely election of uncompromising, out-of-the-mainstream conservatives — in the fall, the Obama administration has begun raising dire alarms in its pitch to voters. Remember the Bush administration, the argument goes. It could be worse.
“I saw that [Alaska GOP Senate candidate] Joe Miller said that he would abolish Social Security if he had the chance and he is not alone,” said chief adviser David Axelrod. “This is akin to what [Nevada GOP Senate candidate] Sharron Angle has said in Nevada and also a number of these other Republicans. So, this could go one step beyond the policies of the Bush administration to something more extreme than we have seen.”

Obama to Push Tax Break
Businesses Would Be Allowed to Write Off New Investment in Plants, Equipment

President Barack Obama, in one of his most dramatic (All these fools want is drama from this president.) gestures to business, will propose that companies be allowed to more quickly write off 100% of their new investment in plants and equipment through 2011.
The proposal, to be laid out Wednesday in a speech in Cleveland, tops a raft of announcements, from a proposed expansion of the research and experimentation tax credit to $50 billion in additional spending on roads, railways and runways.
Companies can now deduct new investment expenses, but over a longer period of time—three to 20 years. The proposed change, which would let companies keep more cash now, is meant to give companies who may be hesitant to invest an incentive to expand, acting as a spur to the overall economy.
While some economists praised the investment-incentive idea, some business groups and congressional Republicans said their higher priority remained an extension of the Bush income-tax rates for higher earners that are set to expire at the end of 2010. Mr. Obama and many congressional Democrats want to let those breaks expire.

WASHINGTON – Turns out politics, for all its focus on the gloomy economy, is a recession-proof industry.
This year’s volatile election is bursting with money, setting fundraising and spending records in a high-stakes struggle for control of Congress amid looser but still fuzzy campaign finance rules.
Based on the latest financial reports, House and Senate candidates in this election cycle raised nearly $1.2 billion, well ahead of the pace for contests in 2008, 2006 and 2004.
Races for governor in 37 states — more than half of those for open seats — are also setting fundraising records. Billionaire Republican Meg Whitman leads the way, pumping $104 million of her own money into her campaign for California governor.
“We may be on track for the most expensive cycle ever, even more than ’08, which is really hard to believe,” said Michael Toner, a campaign finance lawyer at Bryan Cave and a former Federal Election Commission chairman.

Muslims file EEOC suits against meatpacking plants

More than 160 Muslims have enlisted the federal government in two discrimination lawsuits against JBS Swift meatpacking plants, where they allege blood and bones were hurled at them, bathroom walls were covered with vile graffiti and company supervisors disrupted their efforts to worship during Ramadan, ultimately firing many Islamic employees.
The two Equal Employment Opportunity Commission lawsuits filed last week allege a pattern of religious and national origin discrimination and a hostile work environment at two plants – in Greeley, Colo., and Grand Island, Neb. The cases may rank among the largest Muslim discrimination lawsuits since the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, unleashed a backlash against Muslims in the United States, government officials said. In the last five years through fiscal 2009, religious charges have grown 44 percent overall, and 58.4 percent for Muslim workers, according to EEOC data.

After two or three years, political pressure from interests and constituencies unhappy with the changes forces the newcomer out.
Enter a successor, with a new agenda.
That is what many supporters of Mayor Adrian M. Fenty and Schools Chancellor Michelle A. Rhee fear will happen if Fenty loses to D.C. Council Chairman Vincent C. Gray in the Sept. 14 Democratic mayoral primary.

On Labor Day afternoon in Milwaukee, President Obama finally began to vigorously push the kind of high-profile, rebuild-America infrastructure campaign that is absolutely essential if there is to be any real hope of putting Americans back to work and getting the economy back into reasonable shape over the next few years.
In a speech that was rousing, inspirational and, at times, quite funny, the president outlined a $50 billion proposal for a wide range of improvements to the nation’s transportation infrastructure. The money would be used for the construction and rehabilitation of highways, bridges, railroads, airport runways and the air traffic control system.

Gov. Barbour’s civil rights fairy tale

Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour, who may seek the Republican nomination for president, is trying to sell the biggest load of revisionist nonsense about race, politics and the South that I’ve ever heard. Ever.

He has the gall to try to portray Southern Republicans as having been enlightened supporters of the civil rights movement all along. I can’t decide whether this exercise in rewriting history should be described as cynical or sinister. Whichever it is, the record has to be set straight.
In a recent interview with Human Events, a conservative magazine and Web site, Barbour gave his version of how the South, once a Democratic stronghold, became a Republican bastion. The 62-year-old Barbour claimed that it was “my generation” that led the switch: “my generation, who went to integrated schools. I went to integrated college — never thought twice about it.” The “old Democrats” fought integration tooth and nail, Barbour said, but “by my time, people realized that was the past, it was indefensible, it wasn’t gonna be that way anymore. And so the people who really changed the South from Democrat to Republican was a different generation from those who fought integration.”

You know they show no loyalty, they blow with the wind. And secondly, the polls definition of “LIKELY VOTERS” eliminates AAs and young students who voters in the general presidential election. So are WE going to the polls and can Obama reinvigorate the online group that went out and voted before. Just asking about the realities of the situation?
