    War on birth control
By Rachel Maddow, Published: February 10
Rachel Maddow is a political commentator and host of MSNBC’s “The Rachel Maddow Show.”

In 2008 in Colorado, a rebel faction of antiabortion activists decided to pursue a “personhood” initiative. Over the objections of the mainstream antiabortion movement, they proposed amending the state’s constitution to redefine the word “person” to include zygotes. Under the proposal, “from the moment of fertilization,” a woman would be considered two people under Colorado law. When the initiative went before voters, it failed by more than 40 points.

The same activists brought up the measure again in 2010. They changed the “moment of fertilization” language to “the beginning of biological development,” but the intent — and the electoral result — were the same. Even with that year’s conservative electorate, Colorado voters said no to “personhood” by more than 40 points. Again.

The mainstream antiabortion movement opposed the Colorado effort because its members believed a challenge to it might have the unintended effect of reaffirming Roe v. Wade. They also worried that a blunt effort to ban all abortion might cause a backlash that would set back their incremental chipping away at abortion rights.

Greg Sargent: ….. anyone who comes out against the proposal Obama outlined today will be asked a simple question: Are you saying that employers should dictate to female employees whether they should or shouldn’t have access to birth control coverage?

…. What kind of impact do you think GOP opposition to free contraception for female employees of these institutions will have on that gender gap?

….. a new poll came out just today illustrating how perilous this position may be ….. It found that a big majority, 61%, approve of “requiring employer health plans to cover birth control for women.” Only 34% disapproved. Independents approve 58-34; women, 67-29 …. The polling organization that published these findings? Fox News.

Obama Punks the GOP on Contraception

After two solid weeks of Republicans rapidly escalating attacks on contraception access under the banner of “religous freedom,” Obama finally announced what the White House is proposing an accomodation of religiously affiliated employers who don’t want to offer birth control coverage as part of their insurance plans. In those situations, the insurance companies will have to reach out directly to employees and offer contraception coverage for free, without going through the employer. Insurance companies are down with the plan, because as Matt Yglesias explained at Moneybox, contraception actually saves insurance companies money, since it’s cheaper than abortion and far cheaper than childbirth. Because the insurance companies have to reach out to employees directly, there’s very little danger of women not getting coverage because they are unaware they’re eligible.

That’s the nitty-gritty. The fun part of this is that Obama just pulled a fast one on Republicans. He drew this out for two weeks, letting Republicans work themselves into a frenzy of anti-contraception rhetoric, all thinly disguised as concern for religious liberty, and then created a compromise that addressed their purported concerns but without actually reducing women’s access to contraception, which is what this has always been about. (As Dana Goldstein reported in 2010, before the religious liberty gambit was brought up, the Catholic bishops were just demanding that women be denied access and told to abstain from sex instead.) With the fig leaf of religious liberty removed, Republicans are in a bad situation. They can either drop this and slink away knowing they’ve been punked, or they can double down. But in order to do so, they’ll have to be more blatantly anti-contraception, a politically toxic move in a country where 99% of women have used contraception.

My guess is that they’ll take their knocks and go home, but a lot of the damage has already been done. Romney was provoked repeatedly to go on the record saying negative things about contraception. Sure, it was in the frame of concern about religious liberty, but as this incident fades into memory, what most people will remember is that Republicans picked a fight with Obama over contraception coverage and lost. This also gave Obama a chance to highlight this benefit and take full credit for it. Obama needs young female voters to turn out at the polls in November, and hijacking two weeks of the news cycle to send the message that he’s going to get you your birth control for free is a big win for him in that department. I expect to see some ads in the fall showing Romney saying hostile things about contraception and health care reform, with the message that free birth control is going away if he’s elected. It’s all so perfect that I’m inclined to think this was Obama’s plan all along.

  10. Some fake and weak Dems can’t handle the pressure.

In any administrations, they are going to be failures and set backs. But you can’t fold, you have to stick with your President to the end. I didn’t give my vote to take it back if something happened that I didn’t like or approved of. I’m never going to get everything I want. It’s nutty to set yourself up into thinking PBO is going to do everything you want or else there goes my vote. He’s not Barack the Magic Negro. He’s not anyone’s savior either. I have enough faith in my President to believe he can handle any controversy, fake outrage, & racial taunts thrown at him. See, when shit like this fake ass outrage comes up, I just step right in having his back. That’s what a supporters does! It’s cool to have his back during good times. Who can’t do that? But the real test of having his back is when the rubber meets the road & some real trouble comes along OR some manufactured bullshit is thrown his way. Do you have his back then?!

    That’s what’s up!

REPORT: By A Nearly 2 To 1 Margin, Cable Networks Call On Men Over Women To Comment On Birth Control
By Faiz Shakir and Adam Peck on Feb 10, 2012 at 3:00 pm

TP interns Zachary Bernstein and Fatima Najiy conducted the research for this report.

President Obama’s regulation mandating that health insurance plans offer free birth control is an issue that most directly affects women. And yet, the cable news chatter over this controversy has been driven mostly by men, according to a new ThinkProgress analysis.

From Monday through Thursday evening, the leading cable news channels – Fox, Fox Business, MSNBC, and CNN – invited almost twice as many men as women onto their shows to discuss contraceptive coverage.

Out of a total of 146 guests who discussed contraception, the cables invited 91 men compared to 55 women as commentators. In other words, males comprised 62 percent of the total guests who commented on contraception. Fox was the most gender stratified network – on the Business network, 10 of 11 guests were male; on the News side, male pundits took up 65 percent of the guest lineup (28 men vs. 15 women). Sixty percent of MSNBC’s lineup was male (44 men vs. 31 women). And while CNN was more evenly balanced, it was still slightly tilted in favor of male perspectives (9 men vs. 8 women).

  12. Senate Dems angered at ‘Morning Joe’

    http://www.politico.com/blogs/media/2012/02/senate-dems-angered-at-morning-joe-114130.html#.TzVxnklElrU.twitter

BuzzFeed’s Ben Smith notes that female Democratic Senators are furious at Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski, hosts of MSNBC’s ‘Morning Joe,’ for their opposition to the Obama Administration’s contraception mandate:

California Senator Barbara Boxer and New Hampshire’s Jeanne Shaheen both got in touch with MSNBC after the two hosts of the show that starts many politicos’ days were unanimous Monday in their criticism of the rule, which would require Catholic hospitals and other institutions to offer health care plans providing contraception to their employees…

“The women Senators are up in arms. They think the coverage is slanted, Mika is not doing enough to articulate their position, and they can’t get equal time,” a Democrat familiar with the situation told BuzzFeed.

    MSNBC’s spokespeople didn’t comment.

    • Don’t hold your breath waiting on Mika Brzezinski to speak up. She’s too afraid of Joe Scarborough. She speaks when Joe allows her to speak. The entire show is bullshit!

Joey Scar’s show is 3 hours of him bullying, glorifying the GOP, and saying everything short of calling PBO an UPPITY NIGGER. What do these women expect from the DEADINTERN IN TEH OFFICE chauvanistic fool.

You want equal time, take your AZZES over to the current. Maybe Jennifer Granholm will give y’all some face time. Take some real action; and don’t wait for these fools to be fair.

    ‘Common-sense solution’ on contraception
By Steve Benen – Fri Feb 10, 2012 11:40 AM EST.

Word leaked early this morning that the White House was poised to unveil a “compromise” on contraception coverage, and on a conference call at 10:30, two senior administration officials sketched out what they described as a “common-sense solution.”

The new policy effectively finds a work-around to address the concerns raised by Catholic Bishops: instead of having religiously-affiliated employers cover contraception as part of their insurance plans, the Obama administration will have the insurance companies themselves cover the costs themselves. One official explained:

“All women will still have access to free preventive care that includes contraceptive services. The insurance company will be required to reach out directly and offer her contraceptive coverage free of charge.”

It’s a safe bet the Bishops won’t be satisfied, but it’s a pretty straightforward fix: religiously-affiliated employers that don’t want to pay for contraception coverage as part of their benefits packages won’t have to, but these employees will still get the coverage because the White House will instruct insurers to pick up the costs.

An official on the call described access to this preventive care as the “core principle” that the White House considers “inviolate.” The new announcement, the official added, leaves this principle “unchanged.”

“All women will still have access to preventive care, and that includes contraceptive services, no matter where they work,” the official said. It will be the same “guaranteed” benefit for these employees as in “any other workplace.”

The comparison that will be referenced a lot today are the parallels between this and the Hawaii policy, and one of the senior administration officials stressed that while the policies are similar, they’re not identical — the state law offers a separate rider with a fee, while the new Obama administration policy does not.

While the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops will very likely be unimpressed, several major stakeholders in this fight have already offered praise for the White House move. Planned Parenthood, for example, endorsed the compromise, issuing a statement saying, “In the face of a misleading and outrageous assault on women’s health, the Obama administration has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring all women will have access to birth control coverage, with no costly co-pays, no additional hurdles, and no matter where they work. We believe the compliance mechanism does not compromise a woman’s ability to access these critical birth control benefits.” Similarly, EMILY’s List said it was “reassured” by the new policy, and NARAL Pro-Choice America’s statement struck a similar note.

What’s more, Sister Carol Keehan and the Catholic Health Association have also endorsed the administration’s position, which not only offers the White House some political cover, but also further isolates the Bishops. In a statement, Keehan said, “The framework developed has responded to the issues we identified that needed to be fixed.”

For the White House, having support from both the Catholic Health Association and Planned Parenthood was critical.

If insurance companies can make the implementation work, it would appear this policy carefully threads a needle. The right’s talking points all week, when not attacking contraception itself, were based on the notion that it’s an “assault on religious liberty” to force religious employers to honor the contraception mandate. They’ve now lost that talking point

Catholic Bishops showed their asses and the President smacked ’em right where it hurts. It is a good good day!

    • Ametia says:

Nothing’s changed here. Women have the freedom to buy birth control, whether their insurance covers it or not. There are a gazillion ways to get pills. The Bishops don’t have control over a prescription, money in the pockets of it’s members or non members. They’d better save all their billions of $$$ to defend their pediphilia, filthy priests!

  19. Ametia says:

President Obama today announced a compromise in the dispute over whether to require full contraception insurance coverage for female employees at religiously affiliated institutions.

Under the new plan, religiously affiliated universities and hospitals will not be forced to offer contraception coverage to their employees. Insurers will be required, however, to offer complete coverage free of charge to any women who work at such institutions.

Female employees at churches themselves will have no guarantee of any contraception coverage — a continuation of current law. <b.

NOTHING'S CHANGED; NOTHING TO SEE HERE; GET BACK TO WORK, CONGRESS, CATHOLIC CHURCH, & MEDIA!
