GOP nominee Mitt Romney found himself on the defensive at a Wednesday forum with Latino voters, fielding sharp questions about his comments at a closed-door fundraiser, immigration reform and Arizona’s controversial immigration law before the event shifted to his preferred subject of the economy.
The very first question the former Massachusetts governor received during the forum, which was broadcast live online by the Spanish-language network Univision, put Romney in the position of again explaining comments from a secretly recorded video at a fundraiser that 47 percent of the country wouldn’t vote for him because they depend on government assistance.
“My campaign is about the 100 percent of Americans,” Romney said, arguing that his record of accomplishments in Massachusetts – raising the unemployment rate and helping improve schools – proves his commitment to the whole nation.
“This is a campaign about helping people who need help,” he said. “And right now the people who are poor in this country need help getting out of poverty. The people in the middle class need help because their incomes have gone down every year over the last four years.”

That comes from the inimitable Maya Angelou (via the equally inimitable Oprah). And I agree.
So I’m inclined to take Mitt Romney at his word when he disparages nearly half the country to a roomful of wealthy donors on a secretly recorded tape.
As I’m sure you know by now, Romney said that the 47 percent of Americans who pay no income taxes are people who are
dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe the government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you-name-it.
He also said:
My job is not to worry about those people. I’ll never convince them that they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives.
There is no amount of backtracking and truth bending that can make this right. It’s just wrong. It’s not just the patently false implication that half the country is parasitic. It’s not just the bleak view that they wallow in victimization. It is also his utter dismissal of this group: “my job is not to worry about those people.”

Romney Campaign Cautious With Ad Budget, Even in Key States
Despite what appears to be a plump bank account and an in-house production studio that cranks out multiple commercials a day, Mr. Romney’s campaign has been tightfisted with its advertising budget, leaving him at a disadvantage in several crucial states as President Obama blankets them with ads.
One major reason appears to be that Mr. Romney’s campaign finances have been significantly less robust than recent headlines would suggest. Much of the more than $300 million the campaign reported raising this summer is earmarked for the Republican National Committee, state Republican organizations and Congressional races, limiting the money Mr. Romney’s own campaign has to spend.

“You see, by going after the root causes of poverty and trying to break the cycle of poverty, you need economic growth, you need job creation, you need higher take-home pay,” Ryan said.
With the nation’s $16 trillion-plus debt being calculated on a large sign next to him, Paul, a seven-term congressman who serves as House Budget Committee chairman, slammed the Democratic administration for creating what he described a “government-centered society with a government-driven economy.”

Paul Ryan spoke with the NBC affiliate in Reno, Nevada, yesterday, and offered a defense of Mitt Romney’s criticism of the “47 percent” of Americans he sees as lazy freeloaders (thanks to reader F.B).
The part of this that’s generating the most chatter seems to be Ryan describing Romney’s comments as “obviously inarticulate.” And it’s certainly fair to say that running mates don’t usually use phrases like that when talking about their party’s presidential nominee.
But there’s something else that seemed noteworthy about this. After saying Romney was “obviously inarticulate,” Ryan also told the reporter, “The point we’re trying to make here is under the Obama economy government dependency is up and economic stagnation is up, and what we’re trying to achieve is getting people off of government dependency and back to a job that pays well, that gets them on the path to prosperity.”
Nice try, but no. That is not even close to the point Romney was “trying to make” in the video, as anyone who’s actually watched it knows.

Mitt Romney yesterday attempted to turn attention away from the fallout of his comments regarding the “47 percent” by pointing to a video from 1998 in which President Obama, then a state senator, says, “I actually believe in redistribution, at least at a certain level to make sure everybody’s got a shot.” The video was aggressively pushed by the Drudge Report and was detailed in a Romney campaign memo today.
This video doesn’t show much of anything new: President Obama has consistently advocated for higher tax rates on the rich, a position most Americans support, and more support for low-income Americans.
Romney’s response also ignores that his own economic plan would redistribute wealth too — Romney would just redistribute it to the already wealthy.
According to a Tax Policy Center analysis, Romney’s plan would increase after-tax income for those making more than $200,000 annually, while lowering it for everyone else:

What constitutes an ‘opportunity’

This week’s release of the secretly-recorded Mitt Romney fundraiser generated all kinds of news, but there may have been one more element that didn’t make the original cut.
We know about the revelations involving the “47 percent,” Romney wishing he were Latino, his confusion over what a dirty bomb is, and his decision to give up on the Middle East peace process before he’s even elected.
But BuzzFeed reported yesterday that this is the video “that keeps on giving,” and flagged this portion of the recording.
For those can’t quite hear the exchange, a donor noted, “When Carter was president, we had hostages. Ronald Reagan was able to make a statement even before he became, he was actually sworn in, and the hostages were released.” Romney immediately added, “On the day of his inauguration.”
Let’s pause for a moment to note that the Republicans’ preferred myth on this is completely wrong.
Regardless, the donor asked how Romney can “duplicate that scenario.” The candidate began responding by complaining about voters’ lack of interest in international affairs, followed by additional complaints about President Obama withdrawing U.S. troops from Iraq. Romney added:

Pew: Obama Leads By 8 Points, DNC Bolsters Dem Enthusiasm

President Obama has an 8-point lead over Mitt Romney among likely voters, bolstered by renewed Democratic enthusiasm in the wake of the Democratic National Convention, according to a new poll from the Pew Research Center.
“At this stage in the campaign, Barack Obama is in a strong position compared with past victorious presidential candidates,” said Pew President Andrew Kohut. “Obama holds a bigger September lead than the last three candidates who went on to win in November, including Obama four years ago. In elections since 1988, only Bill Clinton, in 1992 and 1996, entered the fall with a larger advantage.”
Obama leads Romney 51 percent to 43 percent. A poll from NBC News and the Wall Street Journal released Tuesday night showed a 5-point Obama advantage.
President Obama leads almost all public polls taken after the conventions, and he has a 4.1 edge in the PollTracker Average of the national race.

“Some of us thought Romney was without core or principle, an empty suit that would say anything to be elected.
First are the distortions. Romney says 47 percent of Americans don’t pay income taxes. That’s literally true, except it’s misleading because it includes every retiree who hasn’t enough income to pay income taxes (most retirees), every poor and lower-income person who doesn’t have enough income to pay, and a few multi-millionaires (perhaps like Romney himself — we don’t know because he won’t release his tax returns), who don’t pay because of tax loopholes and tax-avoidance schemes. Moreover, just about all working Americans, regardless of income, pay federal payroll taxes. Everyone pays state and local sales taxes. And so on.
Romney also distorts reality by purposely mixing “entitlements” with “a sense of entitlement,” and lumps in all recipients of Social Security, Medicare, and unemployment benefits into his 47 percent. Even though these programs are considered “entitlement” spending, their recipients are not undeserving; they don’t consider themselves entitled to handouts. They’ve paid into these insurance plans through their payroll taxes.

The Romney campaign is now pushing the line that his infamous fundraiser comments were pointed at the growth of government under President Obama and the evils of dependency. He’s even saying now that his comments help clarify his position and sharpen the ideological debate.
Of course, this is not what he said.
What made Romney’s comments damaging was that they weren’t really aimed at critiquing government at all, something conservative politicians have long done and with great effect. His comments were directed at people. Half the population whom Romney characterized as shiftless and entitled freeloaders.
Let’s review the quote:
There are 47 percent who are with him, who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe the government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you-name-it. That that’s an entitlement. And the government should give it to them … I’ll never convince them they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives.(emphasis added)
This isn’t about the role of government. And it’s certainly not a comment about electoral politics. It’s an attack on people with deformed personal character. Who make up, according to Romney, half the population.

Chaos Reigns as Romney Pulls Video of Ann Saying Mitt Doesn’t Disdain the Poor

The video the Romney campaign doesn’t want you to see. No, not that one. Another one.
This is a video the Romney campaign put out themselves, titled “Ann Romney to FOX31: Mitt Doesn’t Disdain the Poor,” based on an interview Mitt’s “secret weapon” Ann Romney gave to a local Fox station. The Romney campaign was in panic mode again last night, scrambling to take it down almost as soon as it went up.
Ann Romney told Fox of the furor over the Mother Jones video in which her husband is heard disparaging 47 percent of Americans, “I know he cares and that’s why he’s running. It’s unfortunate when things get taken out of context.”
What? Mother Jones so kindly supplied the full video and there were no edits, no Breitbarting.
The Fox reporter clarified, “So, he wasn’t expressing any disdain for poor people, or people who are on entitlement programs?”
Ann Romney replied, “Absolutely not, absolutely not. Totally not so.”
Well, okay then! This should be a good thing, right? Hey, America, Mitt Romney does not disdain poor people or people on entitlements!
But wait. The campaign then pulled the video when it only had 165 views.

Mitt Romney: Rooting for An Attack on America, Hoping for Iran to Get a Nuclear Weapon
We already know that the Republican party roots for America to fail. Their blabbermouth-in-chief said so, in so many words. But now, they have a nominee who roots for America to be attacked. That’s not an exaggeration, and it’s not made up. It is almost word for word what Mitt Romney said at the now-infamous fundraiser…

And boy did he fall flat on his face trying to take that… ummm… “opportunity.” If something of that nature presents itself? That nature? What nature, governor? The nature of the Iranian Hostage Crisis? Yep, that’s what the Mitt Romney campaign has been hoping for – a crisis of the nature of the Iranian Hostage Crisis – a crisis in which Americans were taken hostage, and America was attacked. Because if there were such a crisis, “that [would be] all we [would] talk about.” Mitt Romney is hoping that America is attacked so that he can take the “opportunity”. Disgusting.
In damage control mode, the Romney campaign now says the “opportunity” he was talking about was an opportunity to stop Iran from getting nuclear weapons. I’m sure that makes it look just peachy, right? Actually, that makes it worse. Mitt Romney was talking about taking advantage of a crisis. Let’s go through that real quick: there is no Iranian nuclear weapons crisis because… well, because Iran does not have nuclear weapons. So, Mitt Romney is hoping that an Iranian nuclear crisis comes to shore soon? In other words, he’s praying for Iran to get nuclear weapons? Wow.

‘If you want to be president, you’ve got to work for everybody’

It was late Monday when the political world first learned in earnest about the Mitt Romney video showing the Republican writing off 47 percent of the country, chastising them for considering themselves “victims” and failing to “take personal responsibility.” President Obama, his White House, and his campaign have generally said very little about the controversy since.
That changed last night when the president sat down with David Letterman, and the host asked about the story. Obama’s comments offered a pretty big hint as to how Democrats intend to use the controversy going forward
For those who can’t watch clips online, I’ve included the transcript below, but it’s worth emphasizing that while the president used a light touch, his indictment wasn’t subtle.
Obama said he understands the importance of using his office to “work for everybody,” as if to say Romney’s secretly-recorded remarks prove otherwise. Indeed, the president’s comments painted a picture of a candidate who’s not only prepared to blow off nearly half of the country, but who doesn’t even understand the needs of working people — the folks Romney believes see themselves as “victims” looking for a handout.
The message going forward, then, is one that presents Romney as so hopelessly out of touch, he’s prepared to ignore the plight of working families nationwide — because he only sees himself as a candidate for some Americans, not all.

We’re all redistributionists now

With the Romney campaign running into quite a bit of trouble over the last week, it was probably inevitable that Republicans would try to unveil a new shiny object. And right on cue, one came along yesterday in the form of an audio clip of Barack Obama speaking in 1998.
Mitt Romney was eager to bring it up during an interview on Fox News.
For those who can’t watch clips online, Romney, hoping to draw a contrast with Obama, said, “[F]rankly, we have two very different views about America. The president’s view is one of a larger government. There is a tape that just came out today where the president is saying he likes redistribution. I disagree.”
Yes, we’re back to talking about redistribution of wealth. Again. To put it mildly, the right was very excited about this yesterday, hoping a 14-year-old comment would become a massive scandal, overshadowing Romney’s disdain for nearly half the country, whom the Republican considers lazy freeloaders.
But this new “revelation” offers more heat than light. If you listen to the 1998 remarks, you’ll notice that Obama, at the time, acknowledged the legitimacy of some conservative criticism of government — he was pragmatic and even-handed, even 14 years ago — before saying, “I believe in redistribution, at least a certain level, to make sure that everybody has got a shot.”

Obama: Jay-Z and I have a lot in common
President Obama took time out from a fundraiser Tuesday to praise his hosts, Beyonce and Jay-Z, at the 40/40 club in New York City.
“Beyonce could not be a better role model for my girls,” he said, according to a pool report. He added that he and Jay-Z have a lot in common.
“We both have daughters and our wives are more popular than we are. So, you know, we’ve got a little bond there. It’s hard but it’s okay.”
It was a more subdued speech than what some may have expected at such a glitzy affair, according to the pool report. Obama hit many of the same themes from his standard stump speech, saying he wanted to make sure that, “here in America, you can make it if you work hard.”
But he also added some new points, including about riding a fine line between confidence in his prospects and instilling urgency in such a close election.
“I don’t want people to be complacent, but I don’t want people to be discouraged,” he said. “We’re on the brink of an election, but more importantly , we’re on the brink of moving America in a direction where we’re going to be more just, more fair. The economy’s going to grow in a way that includes everbody, an America that’s respected around the world, because we’re putting forward our best values and our best ideals.”
