Brooks & Dunn was an American country music duo consisting of Kix Brooks and Ronnie Dunn, who were both vocalists and songwriters. The duo was founded in 1990 through the suggestion of Tim DuBois. Before the foundation, both members were solo recording artists. Brooks wrote songs for John Conlee, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and Highway 101 and released a solo album for Capitol Records; both he and Dunn also charted two solo singles apiece in the 1980s.
Signed to Arista Nashville in 1991, the duo recorded ten studio albums, one Christmas album and three compilation albums for the label. They also released fifty singles, of which twenty went to number one on the Hot Country Songs charts and nineteen more reached top ten. Two of these number-one songs, “My Maria” (a cover of the B.W. Stevenson song) and “Ain’t Nothing ‘Bout You”, were the top country songs of 1996 and 2001, respectively, according to the Billboard Year-End charts. The latter is also the duo’s longest-lasting number one, at six weeks.

A third instance of fraudulent voter registration has been uncovered in the important swing state of Virginia, where a Republican consultant has been arrested and thousands of discarded voter registration forms were recovered from a dumpster earlier this week. According to the Not Larry Sabato blog, a law student at James Madison University registered to vote on campus, but found when she tried to verify the change online, found that her form had never been submitted.
On Thursday, Raw Story reported that 31-year-old Colin Small, a Republican operative employed by Pinpoint, a firm contracted by Republican Party of Virginia, was arrested and charged with “four counts of destruction of voter registration applications, eight counts of disclosure of voter registration application, and one count of obstruction of justice” for throwing active voter registration forms into a dumpster.
Not Larry Sabato blogger Ben Trippett wrote that 2 to 3 weeks ago, a woman, identified only by her first name, Lucy, attempted to update her voter registration at a table on the campus of James Madison University.
“She stopped to fill out a voter registration form to change her voting address from her parents house in Fairfax to her dorm address in Harrisonburg so she could vote in person on election day,” wrote Trippett. ”On Wednesday night Lucy went online to check her voter registration status and found out she had not been registered in Harrisonburg- meaning whoever was collecting her form on campus had not turned it in.”

RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) – The State Board Of Elections says it will not ask Virginia’s Attorney General to investigate the case of a Republican Party contract worker, accused of throwing voter registration forms in the trash.
State Senator Donald McEachin, who is chair of the Senate Democratic Caucus, asked the attorney general to investigate following the arrest of after Colin Small.
Small was a contractor hired by the Republican Party of Virginia to conduct voter registration drives.
He was charged after investigators say as many as nine applications he collected were found in a trash bin behind a Harrisonburg store.
The attorney general says he only looks into election issues after a request from the State Board of Elections.

This week the Virginia blogosphere was electrified by the story of GOP election consultant Colin Small, who was allegedly caught trashing valid Virginia voter registration forms, thereby potentially cheating people of their right to vote in this year’s elections. Small’s case is particularly egrgrious and his story was broken this week by Ben Tribbett in his “Not Larry Sabato” blog, but Colin Small is just the tip of the iceberg that is the GOP voter suppression effort here in Virginia this year. Consider the following story from the Virginia State Board of Elections:
Voters Targeted with False Information on Ability to Vote by Phone
Voters, especially seniors, receiving calls and told they can vote by phone
Richmond, VA – The Virginia State Board of Elections (SBE) is aware that some Virginia voters, particularly older Virginians, are receiving phone calls from unidentified individuals informing voters that they can vote over the phone. This information is false. Virginia law does not permit voting through the telephone. Apart from voting at the polls on Election Day, eligible Virginians may vote an absentee ballot by mail or in-person at the registrar’s office or other authorized satellite location. However, voting cannot be done via the phone, email, or any other means than absentee voting by mail and in-person during the absentee voting period or on Election Day.
At this point in time, it is unclear how widespread these calls have been. However, SBE has received several complaints over the past few days.
These calls may violate several state and federal laws and the State Board of Elections will alert appropriate law enforcement authorities regarding this matter and provide new information if SBE receives additional voter complaints.
We encourage any voter who receives a call matching this description to ask for the name, phone number, and organization from where the individual is calling. We then ask voters to contact the State Board of Elections at 1-800-552-9745 and provide a staff member with that information.

First up from the God Machine this week are startling remarks from a religious right leader about women in society, just as women voters become the central focus of both presidential campaigns.
As my friend Kyle Mantyla reported at Right Wing Watch, the American Family Association’s Bryan Fischer used his radio show earlier in the week to argue against women serving in leadership positions anywhere in society.
According to Fischer, “masculine leadership in society over the nation” is “God’s basic plan for today,” and “political leadership ought to be … reserved for the hands of males.” Anticipating criticism, the religious right leader added that those who believe in gender equality won’t offer a “reasoned” response to his shameless misogyny.
Yes, this guy considers himself a credible arbiter of what is and isn’t “reasoned” discourse.
It’s almost as if Fischer, a Mitt Romney supporter, is trying to give the left a little additional motivation to turn out on Election Day.

‘Romnesia’ and the weasel factor

There’s a lot of chatter about the new word debuted by Obama today — “Romnesia” — which is meant to describe Mitt’s tendency to forget about, contradict or evade his own positions on a host of issues. Here’s the “Romnesia” riff Obama delivered in Virginia today:

Republicans are mocking the new coinage, claiming it reveals — along with the Big Bird hit — the superficiality of the Obama campaign. But there’s actually a serious point to be made about this. The “Romnesia” riff is all about resolving the strategic dilemma the Obama campaign has faced when portraying Romney as alternately a flip flopper and an extremist.
There was never any real contradiction there, despite pundit claims to the contrary. Romney held extreme positions to get through the primary, then flip flopped away from them to get through the general election, but can be expected as president to honor the extreme positions he originally took, since his base won’t let him do otherwise. There’s nothing contradictory in pointing all that out. However, painting Romney as a flip flopper does risk driving home the idea that Romney never really believed in the exreme positions he adopted and is a moderate at heart.
The new “Romnesia” riff can be seen as an answer to this. There’s no need to choose between “extremist” and “flip flopper.” Romney is simply a weasel.

The ad war endgame: Advantage, Obama?

With fewer than three weeks before the presidential election, both sides have ramped up their advertising to an incredible extent. Over the last three weeks, the Obama campaign has purchased $40 million in swing state ad time, while the Romney campaign has spent $49 million. Overall, the Obama campaign is outspending its competitor, $300 million to $164 million. That said, the advantage shifts when you factor in outside groups: total spending from Team Romney — the campaign and Republican Super PACs — comes to $455 million. By contrast, total spending from Team Obama is $352 million.
But the fact that Republicans are outspending Democrats hasn’t translated to actual ad saturation. By the end of last week, Obama and his allies had aired about 5,000 more ads than their Republican counterparts. Indeed, despite speculation that Team Obama was on the verge of conceding states like Virginia, Florida and North Carolina, the bulk of the campaign’s ad spending remains located in two of those states — two of the top six media markets for the Obama campaign are located in Virginia (the Hampton Roads area) and Florida (the Tampa area).
To go back to a point I made several weeks ago, this has everything to do with who controls campaign cash, as well as the actual logistics of buying and scheduling ads. Obama is far less dependent on outside spending than Romney, which — because of campaign finance law — means he pays lower rates than the outside groups that direct the bulk of Romney’s spending. When you combine that with earlier — and thus cheaper — ad buys from the Obama campaign (for instance, they made a $77 million buy in August for the fall), the result is that the Obama camp is airing a greater volume of ads despite the fact that they’re being outspent.
In other words, there’s still a real chance that Obama will out-advertise Romney in the final two weeks of the campaign — which is when ad spending has its greatest effect on the electorate. In which case — if they’re leading — Team Romney has to hope that they’ve built up enough of an advantage to withstand the onslaught. And Romney may not be leading. After a week of excellent polling, Obama has begun to reestablish the slight lead he’s held for most of the year: Of the eight national polls published in the last 24 hours, six show an Obama lead, one shows a tie, and the other, from Gallup, shows a 7 point Romney lead.

In a night full of powerful segments, perhaps the most powerful came at the end when Sensata workers themselves were asked by Ed Schultz what they would say to Mitt Romney if they were asked. The first worker asked a question that every voter who is thinking about voting Republican should ask him/herself. The Sensata worker wanted to ask Romney, “If transferring wealth to the top two percent creates jobs, wouldn’t we be swimming in jobs?”
Other Sensata workers called Romney the Devil’s twin brother, urged him to save their jobs, and told him to just be honest. Voters should consider the story of Sensata a big screaming siren trying to warn them about what they can expect from a potential Romney presidency. Mitt Romney has always been about making money. Romney’s entire career has put profit over the middle class.
Ed Schultz’s broadcast from Freeport, IL was a rare hour of cable news television devoted to the impact of outsourcing, but the key question that Republicans have never been able to answer remains if tax cuts for the wealthy create jobs, where are the jobs?

Bryan Fischer, Kicked off CNN for Lying, Reacts like Childish Buffoon

You knew this already: Bryan Fischer, Director of Issues Analysis for the American Family Association (AFA), likes to throw tantrums. And those of us who are liberals know that CNN is no liberal organ. But to Bryan Fischer, CNN is “what the gay Gestapo looks like in action.”
Why? Because earlier this week, CNN anchor Carol Costello, tiring of Fischer’s lying, bigoted spew, tossed him off her show.
Fischer was in the middle of a rant about the Southern Poverty Law Center’s “Mix It Up at Lunch Day” program, which is all about teaching tolerance and which has the entire religious right in such a lather.
Rather than making friends, aberrochristians think it is better for children to bully their fellow students and ostracize them for being different in the name of their Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Fischer claims anything coming from the Southern Poverty Law Center is “toxic” to their children’s’ “moral health.”
What happened on CNN is what happens when right wing religious extremism accidentally comes in contact with the mainstream media, which does its level best to avoid this sort of stuff. I mean, you have to wonder what CNN was thinking.
Watch what happens when Carol Costello read back to Fischer what he had previously said about gays and Nazism. Reaching the end of the tirade, Costello told the Bigot King, “That smells like agenda to me.” As Fischer continued his rant, Costello tried to talk to him about hate speech. Fischer claimed that the Southern Poverty is out to destroy the AFA and the FRC and that therefore they’re the bullies.
Cosello finally had had enough when Fischer turned to the usual lies about homosexuality and health, and said, “That’s just not true.” She announced that since it is not true, she was ending the interview. “Thanks for sharing your views, I guess,” she said, before turning out the lights on Fischer’s spew.

If Romney Cuts Taxes For The Rich By 20%, He Will Have To Raise Taxes For The Middle Class By $1 Trillion
A highly amusing website put out by the Democratic Party is an easy-to-access critique of the Romney tax plan. Ignore stump speeches or long-winded debates. Just get control of your cursor and chase the access button as it moves and darts about your screen– and PRESTO- up pops the numbers that are easy to follow.
First the $5 trillion in tax cuts which reduces the income tax on the wealthy by 20%($2.5 trillion), eliminates the Alternative Minimum Tax($700 billion), repeals the high-income payroll tax($300 billion) and hands out a juicy $1 trillion tax cut for corporations. They’re like people you know. Nice clean math. Nice big figures with a lot of zeroes.
Then, comes the problem, the headache, or maybe its the head fake. No identification of a single loophole that will be closed. No concrete exposition about raising the capital gains tax on rich people. Our friends at the Democratic Party headquarters have estimated the savings for “ending all tax benefits for the wealthy” at $1.7 trillion; eliminating ALL corporate tax benefits to offset the corporate tax cut- $1.1 trillion and then another $1 trillion of middle class tax benefits to pay for the middle class cut=- another $1 trillion.
Imagine the chaos, the bitterness, the social unrest that would occur. But, then realize these measures only get back $4 trillion. There’s another $1 trillion to go.
Even studies by that staunch Republican economist Martin Feldstein and Princeton economist Harvey Rosen “concede that paying for Romney’s tax cuts would require large tax increases on families making between $100,000 and $200,000. So much for campaign rhetoric favoring the 1% over the 99%. (In the interest of fairness I want to report that some readers of this blog have pointed out that Harvard economist Martin Feldstein wrote a column in the Wall Street Journal on August 28,2012, underscoring that IRS data from 2009 shows Romney’s plan “would not require a large tax increase on the middle class to avoid raising the deficit.”(See comments below)

TransCanada shuts down Keystone pipeline over safety issues

The 2,100-mile Keystone pipeline, which hauls dilbit crude from Alberta, Canada, down to facilities in Illinois and Oklahoma, has some “possible safety issues,” and Canadian energy company TranCanada has shut down the line temporarily to check it out.
The much-contested Keystone XL — the one Paul Ryan said Mitt Romney would approve on “day one” — would be a $7 billion extension of this original line. The Canadian government recently took note of TransCanada’s safety record, after a fired TransCanada employee claimed in an interview with CBC News that he was terminated after raising concerns “about the competency of some pipeline inspectors and the company’s lack of compliance with welding regulations.”

Again, WTF? Both editorial boards see Romney as a shameless political opportunist, yet they come to different conclusions. Why is that? I think The Tennessean‘s final sentence speaks volumes:
Be the man who governed Massachusetts, and you’ll reunite America.
Oh. Right, the guy who governed a strongly Democratic state with a strongly Democratic legislature. You think he’s going to show up when it’s time to move in to the White House? With the Tea Party and John Birchers controlling the Republican Party and Fox News and Drudge controlling the news cycle and the Koch boys controlling the purse strings? You guys seriously think there’s going to be a return to reason in this country? That “moderate Massachusetts Mitt” is who you’re gonna get? Really? That is some magical thinking right there.
This is what’s wrong with newspapers like The Tennessean and the mainstream media in general. They’re so completely, hilariously out of touch. Sure, we’d all love to go back to the days when Tip O’Neill had drinks with Ronald Reagan and everyone was nice and civil to each other and people didn’t draw Hitler mustaches on the president’s picture. But news flash: those days are gone and they won’t be back. Also, there is no Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny is a fraud.

So, to the folks who sit on The Tennessean editorial board, I have a news flash for you: There will be no reuniting of America, not under a Republican president or a Democratic one! Why? Because the failure is not in our leaders but our institutions. Until that is fixed, the foot-dragging and fillibustering and recalcitrance will continue.
Our government is corrupted by money — the “politico-industrial complex” I wrote about last week. These people need our country divided for their game to work. The money comes from flooding everyone’s inbox with hysterical e-mails about how that Scary Mooslim Kenyan Usurper Obama is going to ban Jesus and force abortions on teenage virgins while handing the White House over to the United Nations. That’s where the money is, and companies like Gannett are profiting from it because someone needs to broadcast the scary-voiced announcer dude spreading all of those lies about the candidates.
I mean, come on. These editorial boards are supposed to be filled with smart people. I can’t believe it takes a dang housewife in suburban Nashville to explain how the world works to these folks. Talk about your institutional failures!
And since I’m on the topic, let me point out that our weak-kneed, bottom-line-conscious media helped create this scenario in the first place. The Tennessean is the paper which opened its editorial pages to crackpots and crazies, because they wanted to present “both sides of the issue” (even though some issues really have only one side). They’re the ones who opened their editorial pages to professional astroturfers and corporate shills – repeatedly. It’s not like there’s much credibility left over there, anyway.
You guys mainstreamed the crazy. You gave it a microphone and normalized it. This partisan rancor is as much the media’s fault as anyone’s. Don’t whine about how the country needs to be “reunited” and we need a “return to civility.” For that to happen we need a grown-up to admit that one of our political parties is barking mad. The media had its chance to serve as truth arbiter but that ship sailed when they let “death panels” and “a bureaucrat coming between you and your doctor” substitute for factual policy discussions during the healthcare “debate.”
So don’t cry for me, Argentina. And by all means, don’t tell me Mitt Romney is the guy who’s gonna fix this mess. The very fact that The Tennessean would suggest Multiple Choice Mitt as the solution to this problem it created tells me everything I need to know about our dying newspaper industry.

The Politico-Industrial Complex
Don’t know if anyone saw Stephen Colbert (the satirist not the character) talk to David Gregory this weekend but it’s a must-see (sorry, but WordPress won’t let me embed the video for some reason … you’ll have to click on the link).
What’s I most appreciated was hearing him talk about what he calls the “Politico-Industrial Complex.” He says:
The Super Pac was an act of discovery because I didn’t intend to have a Super Pac […] What I found out is that there’s an entire industry in politics — which I didn’t know, I suspected — but there’s an entire industry, there’s a “politico-industrial complex” that is not just raising money, but is built around making money off of the fact that there is so much money in politics. And there are almost no rules.
Yes, yes, yes. An entire industry built around making money off of money in politics. Where there’s shit there’s always flies.
If there’s an untold story of American politics, and this election in particular, it is this. Michael Moore has touched on this a little bit in some of his films, and documentaries like “Casino Jack” have touched on it as well. But I think the real scope of this, the idea there is a “Politico-Industrial Complex” influencing and corrupting our system of governance, is still a foreign idea to most American voters. And I also think that’s by design because I remain convinced that the media is complicit in this — after all, most of the hundreds of millions of dollars raised by these campaigns ends up on their balance sheet in the form of TV advertising. House Oversight Committee Chairman Darrell Issa (R- Calif.) has come under fire after posting 166 pages of “sensitive but unclassified” State Department cables online Friday afternoon.
The documents relate to the Sept. 11 attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, which killed Ambassador Christopher Stevens and four others. Administration officials, speaking with Foreign Policy magazine, accused Issa of endangering the safety of Libyans working with the U.S. government, whose names were not redacted from the report:

Is ANYBODY surprised that voter fraud would be found that was perpetrated by the GOP and some of the lying thieves they hire to steal elections?
We all know that the republican party is made up of liars, thieves, and assorted scum swept from the filthy gutters in which so many of the GOP wallow in the slime while sucking up the swill that keeps the vermin inside them alive and generating that hate and bigotry that so clearly delineates them from decent Americans.
The sheer, unrelenting stupidity of these people, combined with the fact that they have DELIBERATELY sabotaged all efforts to strengthen our economy is still further proof that these SWINE deserve to be excluded from any part of running our government.

Fox Business aired a graphic that set an image of CNN’s Candy Crowley on fire in what seemed to be continuing efforts to demonize her for her debate fact check on the attack in Libya.
During the October 16 presidential debate, Crowley corrected Mitt Romney’s false claim that President Obama waited 14 days before calling the attack in Benghazi an act of terror. In fact, as Crowley noted, Obama referred to the attack as terrorism on September 12.
As a result, conservative media have denounced Crowley as a terrorist, assassin, and communist. And in what seemed to be a continuation of Fox’s attacks on her, Fox Business aired a graphic of a burning image of Crowley. On-screen text beneath the image read: “Nothing moderate about moderation”:

Mitt Romney’s son, Tagg Romney, has been discovered to have engaged in a contract with a surrogate mother with the stipulations that if the child being carried was not up to the Romney’s specifications, that the Romney family would have the final say if the child would be aborted or not.
In other words the Romney family used their money to buy the power to end a human life, something that Mitt Romney has spoken out against vehemently in the past.

According to TMZ.com the leaked documents include a contract, known as a ‘Gestational Carrier Agreement’, which was signed between Tagg Romney, and an unnamed surrogate mother on July 28, 2011.

One such life? A Libyan woman human rights activist who is leading a campaign against violence, and who was detained in Benghazi. According to an administration official, this woman “expressed fear for her safety to U.S. officials and criticized the Libyan government,” and until today, she wasn’t publicly associated with the U.S. government. She was relatively safe.
But this afternoon, Darrell Issa — in a stroke of sheer idiocy — published reams of State Department documents this afternoon, and this woman’s name appears in the documents — unredacted.

The RNC, Nathan Sproul and his company Strategic Allied Consulting are back in the news today after two incidents of voter fraud in Florida and Colorado were reported weeks ago, a major criminal activity supported by a national party of conservatives surfaced in Virginia.
Even though Sproul is under a criminal investigation in Florida, says Debbie Wasserman Shultz head of the DNC, he was abruptly fired weeks ago, then re-hired again by the RNC.
Today, the arrest of one of Sproul’s hires in the state of Virginia, and the company could be operating in as many as 10 swing states since July 2012. The new name picked for the 2012 election was changed from Sproul and Associates and various other company names to Strategic Allied Consulting.
