  2. Steve King Moves Forward on Bill to End Birthright Citizenship

    http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-503544_162-20027553-503544.html

Republican Rep. Steve King of Iowa, a leading conservative voice on immigration issues, introduced a bill on Wednesday to end the practice of birthright citizenship.

The bill would amend section 301 of the Immigration and Nationality Act to clarify those classes of individuals born in the United States who are nationals and citizens of the United States at birth.

It’s generally thought that the 14th Amendment provides a constitutional guarantee of citizenship for anyone born in the United States — known as “birthright citizenship” — but King told Hotsheet last year that he does not interpret the 14th Amendment that way.

Concerns about illegal immigration last year spurred some Republicans to call for a debate over birthright citizenship, and Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) said last year he was considering proposing a constitutional amendment so that children born in the U.S. to illegal immigrants would not automatically be citizens.

    So Does This Work?

Sen. Minority Leader McConnell reiterated his position this morning: Government will shutdown unless President makes dramatic cuts to Medicare and Social Security.

In other words, big cuts to key social insurance programs are not only the price of avoiding what would likely be a catastrophic government shutdown (a real one, not like what we had back in the 90s). But Democrats must also shield Republicans from the political consequences of cutting these programs by cutting them on the Republicans behalf.

That’s a pretty big ask, no?

    What’s Stopping Black Students’ Success

Experts explain that poor teachers and barriers to resources fuel an academic achievement gap.
    By: Hillary Crosley|Posted: January 3, 2013 at 12:02 AM

In an effort to improve educational offerings, some school districts across the country have taken up President Obama on his recent efforts to spur academic achievement. His Race to the Top initiative seems like a positive push that a lot of states could use. But when winners of the educational competition were announced in November, New York City — an obvious contender — was not among the victors.

In fact, in the nationwide initiative, which awarded $40 million to 16 school districts that proposed the most effective goals for academic achievement, New York City ranked 43rd out of 371 competitors. According to a NY1 report, the Big Apple almost made the cut, but two key details were missing in the application: a schedule implementing the possible changes and a description of who would lead these new programs. In addition, one Race to the Top reviewer charged that the educational goals the city’s schools chancellor, Dennis Walcott, had proposed were too limited in scope.

A major part of Walcott’s plan was that city educators would aim to decrease the graduation-rate disparity between whites and blacks by 2 percent over the next six years. In New York City public schools, the graduation rate for white students is 21 percent higher than for black students. “We continue to set an ambitious agenda, as far as not just the achievement gap but giving all of our students high-quality schools,” Walcott told NY1.

Shrinking the graduation gap was just a part of the plan, though. Other objectives (pdf) included coordinating high school- and college-readiness efforts, incentivizing teachers to encourage mentorship and dismissing ineffective instructors.

Donald Glover, Issa Rae, Baratunde Thurston: The rise of the black nerd?

    By Clinton Yates

Nerd culture has hit a cultural high point. More than ever, people are going out of their way to self-identify as ‘nerdy’ as kind of an ironic way to put an affable twist on parts of their personalities that they might otherwise be ashamed of.

Coffee nerds, political nerds, video game nerds, etc. It seems that being a person that enjoys anything related to sci-fi or, say intellect, has transformed part of our nation into a roving gang of nerds, incapable of finding that ubiquitous quality of cool that we’re all apparently searching for.

Take, Chris Hardwick, the television personality that hosts The Nerdist podcast. Or the characters of one my favorite sitcoms, “The Big Bang Theory.” It’s based around a group of scientists that are so socially inept that they become loveable on their own.

And while listening to NPR the other day (public radio nerd!) I came across something new to me: the black nerd. In the story, journalist Eric Deggans described how he felt like his existence in this ‘blerd’ world was a shame to him, prior to recently. The rise of the black nerd is upon us. Unite!

How to Date a Black Nerd

    By: Stacia L. Brown |
    Posted: January 3, 2013 at 12:06 AM

“Blerds” were all over the news in 2012. Clutch magazine’s Stacia L. Brown provides a step-by-step guide for how to have a relationship with one.

Though the concept of segregating nerddom along racial lines is a bit suspect and certainly has its detractors, the newfound attention black nerds are attracting doesn’t seem to be abating …

In any event, there’s a bit of an art form to making a relationship thrive with a nerdy guy.

If you’re new to the game, here are a few tips to ease your tension:

    1. Embrace, don’t efface.

Listen, if a dude’s a Trekkie or Star Wars buff when you meet him, and he has an annual date with a Con that involves cosplay, accept that …

    2. Allow for idiosyncratic conversation.

If you’re out to dinner and the conversation veers off into obscure territory, go with it. We’re not saying you should have to learn Klingon or bone up on quantum-controlled mobile robots to talk to your date …

    3. Don’t feign great interest.

It’s best to be upfront about just how little you know (or care) about your date’s nerdy niches. He’ll respect you for that …

In Africa, Being Black is NOT Seen as Being Beautiful: White Skin is In

    January 3, 2013
    By EurPublisher

*If you thought the skin-lightening thing that was all the rage a few years ago among blacks in the Caribbean was a fad, wait’ll you see what’s happening in Africa. In particular, South Africa.

When we think of South Africa, we can’t help but the think of Nelson Mandela and black people who are proud to be … black! But would you believe that for some black South Africans there is such a thing as being too black.

A recent study by the University of Cape Town hints that one woman in three in South Africa bleaches her skin. The reasons for this are as varied as the cultures in the country but most people say they use skin-lighteners because they want “white skin,” reports the BBC.

One such woman is musician Nomasonto “Mshoza” Mnisi. Now several shades lighter, she says her new skin makes her feel more beautiful and confident.

She has been widely criticized in the local media and social networking sites for her appearance but the 30-year-old says skin-bleaching is a personal choice, no different from breast implants or a having nose job.

“I’ve been black and dark-skinned for many years, I wanted to see the other side. I wanted to see what it would be like to be white and I’m happy,” she says candidly.

Over the past couple of years Ms Mnisi has had several treatments. Each session can cost around 5,000 rand (£360; $590), she tells the BBC.

Unlike many in the country, she uses high-end products which are believed to be safer than the creams sold on the black market but they are by no means risk-free, doctors say.

    Costly beauty

Ms Mnisi says she does not understand the criticism about her new appearance.

“Yes, part of it is a self-esteem issue and I have addressed that and I am happy now. I’m not white inside, I’m not really fluent in English, I have black kids. I’m a township girl, I’ve just changed the way I look on the outside,” she says.

The dangers associated with the use of some of these creams include blood cancers such as leukaemia and cancers of the liver and kidneys, as well as a severe skin condition called ochronosis, a form of hyper-pigmentation which causes the skin to turn a dark purple shade, according to senior researcher at the University of Cape Town, Dr Lester Davids.

“Very few people in South Africa and Africa know the concentration of the toxic compounds that are contained in the products on the black market and that is concerning. We need to do more to educate people about these dangerous products,” says Dr Davids.

The Crack-Up of the GOP: No Way Out

    by BooMan
Sun Jan 6th, 2013 at 10:53:18 AM EST

The Washington Post reports that there are divisions within the Republican Party about whether or not they can effectively use a threat to destroy the country’s credit rating and cause a global recession to extract spending cuts from the Democrats. If they did it before, why not do it again?
Meanwhile, the New York Times focuses more on the big picture divisions like immigration, women’s rights, gay marriage, and letting the NRA dictate the GOP’s policy on guns.

In both cases, it is really a divide between conservatives and Republicans. The near-total capture of the GOP by conservatives has created a situation which has now come to a head. They call it the Conservative Movement for a reason. They have places to go. The problem is, the American people do not want to go there. The conundrum presents itself in stark terms in the debate over the debt ceiling. Countless Rush Limbaugh fans and Fox News watchers have been seduced into an alternative reality where they are both the good and the aggrieved. But they don’t want to see the party destroy the country’s credit rating, millions of jobs, and the value of their nest eggs, all in the name of reducing the worth of their earned benefits and eroding their retirement security. The conservatives carried the ball so down the field that people are in the shadow of the goalposts. And they don’t want to score.

Something similar is going on with their strategy of stoking white resentment, anxiety and religious tribalism. It holds whites within the coalition who would otherwise split, but not enough of them…not anymore. Ralph Reed explains their predicament:

“The Republican Party can’t stay exactly where it is and stick its head in the sand and ignore the fact that the country is changing,” said Ralph Reed, the founder of the Faith and Freedom Coalition and onetime leader of the Christian Coalition.
“On the other hand, if the party were to retreat on core, pro-family stands and its positions on fiscal responsibility and taxes, it could very quickly find itself without a strong demographic support base.”

Their aggrieved white base may not be big enough anymore, but without it the Republicans collapse into oblivion. And, yet, what better way to dissolve their aggrieved white base than to make a deal on immigration or to vote to raise taxes or to agree to gun restrictions or to soften their stance on gay marriage or reproductive choice? Compromising on those issues will feel like a cynical betrayal to Fox Nation.

The truth is that the conservatives like feeling aggrieved more than they like exercising authority. They are happiest in the minority and least happy having to govern (especially if they have to make compromises from a position of weakness). Republicans, on the other hand, exist to win and hold power. Newt Gingrich understands this distinction. He was the one who realized how the conservatives could seize control of the party and win back the House of Representatives for the first time in 40 years. He was the one who came up with a strategy that could break the conservatives out of their lethargy and acceptance of permanent minority status. Gingrich was a hybrid, and it’s no surprise that he is telling the House Republicans to change strategies and stop threatening people over the debt ceiling.

Republicans Losing Debt Ceiling Fight as McConnell Won’t Say He’ll Shut Down Government

    By: Jason EasleyJan. 6th, 2013

Republicans are already losing the debt ceiling fight. Sen. Mitch McConnell was asked repeatedly on ABC’s This Week if he would shut down the government, and he wouldn’t back the idea.

    Transcript from ABC’s This Week

STEPHANOPOULOS: And the question is, how will you follow through on your strategy? And, you know, there are — a lot of your allies are worried about the — about that prospect. The Wall Street Journal editorial page said the political result will be far worse if Republicans start this fight only to cave in the end. You can’t take a hostage you aren’t prepared to shoot. Do the two GOP leaders have a better strategy today than they did in 2011?

And I guess, you know, you’re hearing that phrase more and more now, shoot the hostage. Are you prepared to do it, to see the country default, if the president won’t sign the spending cuts you demand?

MCCONNELL: Well, look, it’s not even necessary to get to that point. Why aren’t we trying to settle the problem? Why aren’t we trying to do something about reducing spending? We know we need to do it. When are we going to do it? We don’t need to use the deadline. We could go through the regular order. Congress could pass bills. They could have conferences between the House and Senate. The president could be engaged. I mean, he’s good at campaigning…

Instead of saying that he would support a government shutdown, McConnell has already staked out the weak kneed position of backing off the threat of a shutdown while blaming Democrats for refusing to cut spending. McConnell gave every indication that his party is repeating that all bark and no bite tactics that have led to them talking a tough game, but repeatedly caving to the president over the last 18 months.

What Republicans never seem to understand is that the American people always support spending cuts in the abstract. When they are asked if they support cutting spending, the vast majority of people will always say yes. The problem occurs when people are asked about cutting specific programs. By wide margin, the public does not support cuts in Social Security, Medicare, or Medicaid. The left supports defense cuts, but most on the right do not.

This isn’t matter of Democrats not supporting cuts. For decades this country has not been able to agree on what should be cut.

McConnell can declare all he wants that there will be no new revenue, but he and his party are going to lose that fight. Obama’s balanced approach remains extremely popular. The president is going to use the same argument on the debt ceiling that won him reelection and almost everything he wanted on the fiscal cliff.

Republicans are playing a very weak hand, and if leaders like McConnell refuse to shut down the government, they’ve already lost.

Republican Grifters Rob Oregonians Blind With Charter School Scam

    By: Hrafnkell HaraldssonJan. 6th, 2013

I wrote back in November how Republicans Turn Charter School Officials Into the New Robber Barons. We’ve just seen a new example of this out of Oregon, where the Oregonian is reporting Oregon charter school founders accused in $20 million racketeering lawsuit. As I wrote on that earlier occasion, Privatization is the new Gold Rush. There is money to be made in them there hills. And charter schools are the Republican hammer to be used to prise it out of our hands. And what money!

According to the Oregonian, “Tim King and Norm Donohoe, who ran a chain of taxpayer-funded charter schools across small-town Oregon from their headquarters in Clackamas, scammed the state out of $17 million and must repay that plus $2.7 million more, the state said in a court filing this week.”

It turns out that while unrepentant greed and avarice are Republican virtues in 2012, they are still illegal:

The legal claim, brought Thursday by the Oregon Department of Justice in Marion County Circuit Court, accuses the pair of racketeering, money laundering and other fraud from 2007 to 2010.

The Protesters of the Steubenville Rape Case Inspire Real Change

    By: Sarah JonesJan. 6th, 2013

Even as Anonymous was leading a second protest in Steubenville yesterday, the sheriff announced that no other people would be charged in the alleged gang raping and kidnapping of 16-year-old Jane Doe by football players referred to as members of the “rape crew”.

This case appears to be steeped in cover-ups and conspiracies, from the County Prosecuting Attorney reportedly being the mother of one of the “rape crew”, at whose house an assault may have taken place, to the victim’s ex-boyfriend allegedly setting her up to be drugged and gang raped as revenge for breaking up with him. It’s disgusting and shameful and horrifying, but it’s also sadly not that unusual.

What is unusual is that this time a group of mostly men, in a subset of Anonymous called Knight Sec, is leading a public charge against the rape culture and demanding justice.

Anonymous’ protests aren’t just impacting this case; in fact, because of the attention the Steubenville case has gotten, San Luis Obispo rape crisis agency in California has launched a “Start by Believing” campaign in order to promote the reporting of rape. Sexual Assault and Rape Prevention (SARP) Associate Executive Director Jesse Torrey explained, “If somebody discloses they’ve been sexually assaulted, you need to start by believing them. And if they are responded to with support, with validation, with ‘how can I help?’, with ‘this wasn’t your fault’…that’s the road to healing.”

Out of this horror, some salvation.

Rush Limbaugh: Obama Wants To ‘Erase Every Trace of Reagan From America’
    by Anjali Sareen | 5:18 pm, January 5th, 2013

Rush Limbaugh claimed Friday that President Obama wanted to “erase every trace of Reagan from America” because he is “threatened” by the Reagan’s success. He seeks to be a “truly transformational president,” Limbaugh said and therefore must get rid of Reagan’s legacy.

According to Limbaugh, “Obama has a lot of admiration for Reagan” but only in the sense that “Reagan genuinely changed the trajectory of this country.”

Limbaugh says Democrats believe Obama has now proven contrary that to Reagan’s policies, raising taxes actually causes economic growth. But Limbaugh says it actually only causes government growth. He describes a future in which the “only reference” to Reagan in academic text books is one small paragraph about all that Reagan destroyed.

Among Obama’s top 5 objectives, Limbaugh says, “is to erase all vestiges of the Reagan years, to have an entire and total complete revision of the history of the Reagan years.” Democrats are threatened by the Reagan years because they “demonstrated” how “dangerously wrong” Dems were. “That’s why there’s been a constant rewriting of history ever since Reagan was in office and even while he was in office,” Limbaugh says.

New Yorker Blasts Obama Over Sandy: If Low-Class Area Had Been Hit, You Would Have Already Helped Them
    by Josh Feldman | 10:20 pm, January 4th, 2013

New Yorkers and New Jerseyans hurt by Hurricane Sandy are still waiting for the federal government to take action and provide swift relief to their areas. Much of the ire this week has been contained to the inaction taken in Congress, but a Staten Island resident on Sean Hannity‘s show tonight made President Obama the subject of his anger, saying that Obama has not fulfilled his promise to cut the red tape, and his area “keep[s] getting the middle finger” from the president.

This is not Scott McGrath‘s first cable news appearance complaining about the lack of aid coming to New York. As Hannity pointed out, he’s become a spokesman of sorts for residents displaced by the storm. McGrath said he was frustrated by the amount of pork in the hurricane relief bill holding up its passage in Congress. He pointed out that relief came far more quickly in the wake of other devastating storms.

McGrath described how he personally met with Obama over a month ago and was reassured by the president that he would “cut the red tape” and get relief to New Yorkers quickly, and yet he only got power restored to his home last night. When McGrath e-mailed FEMA about the loss of one of his three cars, he got an e-mail back asking why he needs three cars.

“The arrangement was simply FreedomWorks paid Glenn Beck money and Glenn Beck said nice things about FreedomWorks on the air,” Armey, the former House majority leader, told Media Matters Friday. “I saw that a million dollars went to Beck this past year, that was the annual expenditure.”

Armey, who left the organization this past fall after a dispute over its internal operations, said a similar arrangement was also in place with Rush Limbaugh, but did not know the exact financial details.

“I put it down now as basically as paid advertising for FreedomWorks by Beck,” Armey said, calling it a mistake.

And speaking of gang rape, we have our own gang rape case here in Steubenville, Ohio. I know it has been noted here, but this is the most unbelievable disgusting thing I have ever read——-this gang rape of this 15 yr. old honor student, knocked out with a date rape drug, carried from party to party and raped multiple times by multiple attackers, many on the beloved h.s. football team—–and the cover up by everyone in authority—-local law enforcement, school and sports officials, now state law enforcement—–all seemingly have ties to these amoral, sociopathic young guys. It is revolting, the whole thing, especially these guys laughing about it on vid afterward etc. etc. Gross beyond belief.

Here’s the link to a blogger who has laid out all the players in this sick coverup. if you have the stomach, read from top to bottom….it’s a cesspool of corruption:
