Cicely Tyson (born December 19, 1933) is an American actress. A successful stage actress, Tyson is also known for her Oscar-nominated role in the film Sounder and the television movies The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman and Roots.
Personal life
Tyson was born and raised in Harlem, New York, the daughter of Theodosia, a domestic, and William Tyson, who worked as a carpenter, a painter, or any other jobs he could find. Her parents were immigrants from the island of Nevis of the Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis in the West Indies;[1][2][3] Her father arrived in New York City at the age of 21 and was processed at Ellis Island on August 4, 1919.[4]
Tyson married legendary jazz trumpeter Miles Davis on November 26, 1981. The ceremony was conducted by Atlanta mayor Andrew Young at the home of actor Bill Cosby. Tyson and Davis divorced in 1988.
She is a member of Delta Sigma Theta sorority. On May 17, 2009, Tyson received an honorary degree from Morehouse College, an all-male college.
In 2010, she was awarded the Spingarn Medal from the NAACP.[5]
Career
Tyson was discovered or found by a photographer for Ebony magazine and became a popular fashion model. Her first credited film role was in Carib Gold in 1956, but she went on to do television such as the celebrated series East Side/West Side and the soap opera The Guiding Light. In 1961, Tyson appeared in the original cast of French playwright Jean Genet’s The Blacks, the longest running off-Broadway non-musical of the decade, running for 1,408 performances. The original cast also featured James Earl Jones, Roscoe Lee Browne, Louis Gossett, Jr., Godfrey Cambridge, Maya Angelou and Charles Gordone. She appeared with Sammy Davis, Jr. in the film A Man Called Adam (1966) and starred in the film version of Graham Greene’s The Comedians (1967). Tyson had a featured role in The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter (1968) and was in a segment of the movie Roots.
In 1972, she was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in the critically acclaimed Sounder. In 1974, she won two Emmy Awards for The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman. Other acclaimed television roles included Roots, King, in which she portrayed Coretta Scott King, The Marva Collins Story, When No One Would Listen and Oldest Living Confederate Widow Tells All for which she received her third Emmy Award. On February 10, 1979 she hosted episode 11 of the fourth season of Saturday Night Live. In the opening monologue, Garret Morris came out dressed in female clothes doing an impression of Cicely, until the real Cicely joined him onstage pretending to be angry at the impression and at the way Morris was demeaning all black actors with such “base” comedy.
In 1982, she was awarded the Women in Film Crystal Award for outstanding women who, through their endurance and the excellence of their work, have helped to expand the role of women within the entertainment industry.[6]
In her 1994-1995 television series Sweet Justice, Tyson portrayed a feisty, unorthodox Southern attorney named Carrie Grace Battle, a character she shaped by consulting with and shadowing the legendary Washington, D.C. civil rights and criminal defense lawyer Dovey Johnson Roundtree.
In 2005, Tyson co-starred in the movies Because of Winn-Dixie and Diary of a Mad Black Woman. The same year she was honored by Oprah Winfrey at her Legends Ball.
The Cicely Tyson School of Performing and Fine Arts, a magnet school in East Orange, New Jersey, was renamed in her honor. She plays an active part in supporting the school, which serves one of New Jersey’s most underprivileged African-American communities. In 2010 Ms. Tyson narrated the “Paul Robeson Award”-winning documentary Up from the Bottoms: The Search for the American Dream. In 2010 she appeared in the Tyler Perry movie Why Did I Get Married Too. In 2011, Tyson appeared in her first music video in Willow Smith’s 21st Century Girl.

Obama Opposed Syria War Plan from Clinton, Petraeus, Panetta, Gen. Dempsey
Let’s give the White House and President Obama, personally, credit for blocking the hawks in his administration from going to war in Syria. Last week, we learned that Hillary Clinton and David Petraeus, now thankfully pursuing other opportunities and spending more time with their families, had cooked up a plan to arm and train the ragtag Syrian rebels, thus getting the United States directly involved in that horrible civil war. Now we learn that Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta and General Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs—both of whom are about to join Clinton and Petraeus in the private sector—also backed the Clinton-Petraeus plan.
Who was against it? Obama.[….] Neither Mr. Panetta nor General Dempsey explained why President Obama did not heed their recommendation. But senior American officials have said that the White House was worried about the risks of becoming more deeply involved in the Syria crisis, including the possibility that weapons could fall into the wrong hands. Let’s hope it stays killed. Are you listening, John Kerry, Chuck Hagel, John Brennan?

The doctor is in! ‘Doc McStuffins’ reveals changing face of medicine
As TV doctor dramas go, Doc McStuffins is no ER. The protagonist is a cartoon preschooler who provides primary health care for stuffed animals from a backyard play house. In a typical episode, she diagnoses her little brother’s teddy bear with acute “dusty musties” and prescribes a good laundering. The brave bear rides the waves and emerges from the washing machine clean enough to snuggle the boy without aggravating his allergies.
“If he ever makes you sneeze again,” Doc McStuffins advises her grateful sibling, “he just needs a wash and he’ll be all better.”
If you think this is generic kidstuff, think again. In the 11 months since Disney Junior launched Doc McStuffins, the show has become cable TV’s top-rated preschool series and, more important, the spark of social movement. Why are viewers, activists and health professionals heralding this sweet little show as the best thing since penicillin, or at least since the Huxtables?

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Police say a 7-year-old boy alerted a teacher after finding a loaded gun in his backpack at a Philadelphia elementary school.
It happened during an after-school program at Universal Samuel Daroff Charter School in west Philadelphia around 4 p.m. Thursday. School officials told police the boy was putting a folder in his bag at the end of the day and noticed the gun.
The principal says staff immediately took the backpack and called police.
Lt. John Walker says police are conducting interviews with family and reviewing surveillance video to figure out how the gun got into the bag.
Walker says it was a .38-caliber handgun loaded with five rounds of ammunition. The boy says he had his backpack with him in the classroom the entire day.

I know. I know. Every week, I start with how much Scandal has slayed me, but truly, this last episode left me trapped in a glass case of emotions and only Shonda Rhimes has the key to get me out! It had me so spent that I had to go take a shower afterwards to get my wits back. I wish I was exaggerating. No one show should have all this power.
Also, it must be said that Scandal is different from a lot of other shows I’ve watched because the writers do not drag their feet on storylines and keeping us guessing. The answer the questions we have from the previous episodes in like the first 10 minutes of the episode and create brand new ones for us to pull out our hair over. Anyway, let’s get into the tea, because there was A LOT OF IT.
Saved By the Huck – Last episode ended as the elevator door was closing on Hollis and Charlie, who was sent to kill him, by Cyrus. This episode starts as Huck gets into the elevator just in time to pull out a gun and tell Hollis he’s saving him on behalf of Olivia Pope. Dang. I was looking forward to Hollis dying. Shucks. Better luck next time.

Ohio Governor’s Tax Plan Would Cut Taxes For Wealthy, Raise Them On The Poor

Ohio Gov. John Kasich (R) has joined the growing list of Republican governors pushing income tax cuts for the wealthiest citizens of his state, and like those other governors, his plan would raise taxes on the poor to pay for it.
Kasich’s plan would cut income tax rates by 20 percent and some business tax rates in half, and it would pay for the plan by levying sales taxes on goods and services that were previously exempt. Since sales taxes are inherently regressive, Kasich’s plan would raise taxes on the poorest 60 percent of the state’s residents by as much as $77. The top 1 percent, though, would see an average tax cut of $10,369, according to an analysis by Policy Matters Ohio:
The proposal would provide a $10,369 annual tax cut on average to taxpayers in the top 1 percent of the income spectrum, who made more than $335,000 in 2012. The bottom fifth of taxpayers, making less than $18,000 a year, would see an average increase of $63. Those in the middle fifth, making between $33,000 and $51,000 in 2012, would come out about even, averaging an annual tax increase of $8.

‘Being Mandela’: Granddaughters take to reality TV

NEW YORK (AP) — The newest reality television show is in some ways like any other: mother and daughters, sibling rivalry, family gossip and talk of Big Grandpa, who is very strict but loves it when his great-grandchildren are around making a racket. But that’s where the twist comes in: Big Grandpa is Nelson Mandela, the anti-apartheid legend.
Being Mandela,” a new series premiering Sunday on COZI TV, invites U.S. audiences into the lives of Zaziwe Dlamini-Manaway and Swati Dlamini, the fashionable, 30-something granddaughters of Mandela and Winnie Madikizela-Mandela. The 94-year-old former South African president, who recently was treated for a lung infection and had surgery to remove gallstones, does not appear in the series but his controversial ex-wife — “Big Mommy” to her grandchildren — does and seems to relish it.
If the Mandela clan seems like an odd subject for a reality show, the granddaughters make no apologies.
“We get asked this question a lot. Is this not going to tarnish the name and is this not going to be bad for the name?” Swati Dlamini said in an interview with The Associated Press in New York, where she and her sister were promoting the show. “But our grandparents have always said to us, this is our name too, and we can do what we think is best fitting with the name, as long as we treat it with respect and integrity.”
The 13-episode first season follows the two women as they try to carry on the family legacy while juggling motherhood in Johannesburg.

Shirley Bassey to perform at Oscars

Shirley Bassey is the latest singer to join the diva-packed line-up of performers at this year’s Academy Awards.
In addition to Dame Shirley, Oscars producers have booked Barbra Streisand, Adele and Norah Jones for the telecast, adding sizzle and star power to the evening’s musical offerings.
Bassey, who is best known for her scorching James Bond theme songs, will presumably participate in the Academy’s planned tribute to 007. The superspy franchise is celebrating 50 years on the big screen. Bassey sang three Bond songs — “Goldfinger,” “Moonraker” and “Diamonds are Forever.”
Amazingly none of these songs was nominated for an Oscar, but “Skyfall,” the Adele-sung theme song to last year’s Bond film, is up for the Best Original Song award and widely expected to win.
“We are thrilled to welcome the legendary Dame Shirley Bassey to our Oscar show,” producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron said in a statement. “Her association with film music is world-renowned, and we are proud that she will be making her first Oscar appearance on our telecast.

Former Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. admits to campaign finance violations

Former Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. has signed papers in a plea deal with federal prosecutors in which he admits to violating campaign finance law, according to sources familiar with the case.
In the papers, signed within the past several days, Jackson admits converting campaign contributions for personal use. Some of the violations include using campaign funds for a $40,000 Rolex watch, travel expenses for a friend and furniture purchased for his Washington, D.C., home. Under the terms of the deal, Jackson’s sentence would be decided by a federal judge and could range from probation to prison time.
Jackson resigned from the Congressional seat he held for 17 years on Nov. 21, 2012, acknowledging a federal investigation and citing health issues.

Those with knowledge of the investigation say some loose ends have yet to be resolved, including questions surrounding whether Jackson’s wife, former Chicago Alderman Sandi Jackson, will also be charged in connection with the case. During her husband’s political career Sandi Jackson regularly received a $5,000 a month check as his political consultant, according to NBCChicago.com.

A contradictory RNC message on race and diversity

In the wake of their 2012 election defeats, the Republican Party hasn’t been willing to change much, but GOP officials have at least been willing to acknowledge their demographic problem. The party’s core group of supporters is old, right-wing, and white, which isn’t a recipe for success in a modern, increasingly diverse nation.
Whatever their other faults, Republican leaders realize the current trends are unsustainable for them, and at least rhetorically, seem eager to bring in new supporters. With that in mind, Reince Priebus traveled to Atlanta yesterday to do some outreach.
During a stop in Atlanta to talk with black voters Thursday, Priebus said the answer is more about framing than about substance.
“I think freedom and liberty is a fresh idea,” he said after a closed-door session with about two dozen black business and civic leaders. “I think it’s always a revolutionary idea. I don’t think there’s anything we need to fix as far as our principles and our policies.” […]
The priority, Priebus said, will be investing time in the African-American community. “I don’t think you can show up a few months before the election,” he said.

Toward the end of a four-hour Senate hearing on gun violence last week, Wayne LaPierre, the National Rifle Association’s executive vice president of over two decades, took a break from extolling the virtues of assault rifles and waded briefly into new territory: criminal justice reform. “We’ve supported prison building,” LaPierre said. Then he hammered California for releasing tens of thousands of nonviolent offenders per a Supreme Court order—what he’d previously termed “the largest prison break in American history.”
But California’s overflowing prisons, which the Supreme Court had deemed “cruel and unusual punishment” in 2011 because of squalid conditions, were partly a product of the NRA’s creation. Starting in 1992, as part of a now-defunct program called CrimeStrike, the NRA spent millions of dollars pushing a slate of supposedly anti-crime measures across the country that kept America’s prisons full—and built new ones to meet the demand. CrimeStrike’s legacy is everywhere these days.

O’Reilly’s version of a correction

We talked yesterday about Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly, who told his audience on Wednesday night that NBC News hasn’t reported “anything” on the drones story. It was, of course, a deeply odd claim — NBC broke the drones story, which was then amplified right here on MSNBC.
We learned yesterday afternoon that O’Reilly intended to “address” his error, which I hoped meant he’d issue a correction. He didn’t.
At the very end of his broadcast, O’Reilly complained about “more deceit from the far-left.” It went downhill from there:
“I put forth that over at NBC News and other media places, they were hysterical over water-boarding but muted over President Obama’s drone attacks, at least until yesterday.
“Immediately, the far-left machine cranked up, ‘O’Reilly didn’t say that NBC News broke the drone memo story. He’s a deceiver.’ True, I didn’t say NBC broke the memo story because we weren’t talking about that. Water-boarding versus drone strikes. Well, once again, we have a propaganda campaign designed to make ignorant people on the left, even more ignorant.
“Factor Tip of the Day: don’t deal with loons. I have to. You shouldn’t have to. And that is it for us tonight.”
Look, I don’t want to belabor the point. How O’Reilly chooses to correct his own errors is between him, his employer, and his audience.
But there’s no ambiguity here or room for interpretation. O’Reilly spent several minutes complaining — on the air, live and on camera — insisting that NBC News didn’t report “anything about the drones.” He and his staff, he said, “haven’t heard anything over there about” the drones story. O’Reilly added that journalists at NBC News “don’t care about drones,” and he concluded that all of this is part of a larger scheme to “protect” President Obama.

A Personal Quest to Make Guns’ Toll More Visible

It happened a few minutes before the beginning of Jim Langevin’s junior cadet shift back in 1980.
He arrived at the police station here early, as usual. Two officers were standing in the locker room admiring a new .45-caliber semiautomatic pistol. Thinking the chamber was empty, one of them pulled the trigger. A bullet ricocheted off a locker and went right through the boy’s neck, severing his spinal cord.
At 16, he would never walk again and never fulfill his dream of becoming a police officer.
Now, three decades later and seven terms into his career as one of Rhode Island’s two members of the House of Representatives, Mr. Langevin, 48, is the only quadriplegic ever to serve in Congress. And his story, unknown to many of those who work with him every day in the Capitol, has thrust him into the raging national debate over gun control.
For the past month, he has been on a quiet campaign to persuade his colleagues to give up their guest passes to next Tuesday’s State of the Union address by President Obama so that victims of gun violence can attend.
That way, he said, when the nation’s highest officeholders look up from the floor of the House to those watching from the gallery, they will not be able to avoid seeing the human toll that guns can exact.

How many angels can dance on the head of an electoral vote?

The Republican scheme to rig the presidential election by allocating electoral votes along gerrymandered district lines is clearly in big trouble. It was brought up in several states, but the only one where it still stands a credible shot of advancing is Pennsylvania, and as of yesterday, state GOP leaders are divided amongst themselves.
But while we wait for this awful idea to fade away completely, David Frum is unmoved by criticisms of the Republican vote-rigging plans.
Liberals and Democrats are today aghast at Republican schemes to rewrite voting rules to strengthen their position in the Electoral College. Republicans are suggesting that states switch from winner-take-all to a district-by-district allocation of electoral votes. […]
Wherever did Republicans get such an idea? Oh yeah […]
Moral: when it comes to setting the rules of the game, there are no angels.
I never saw this as an especially partisan issue — it’s offensive when sore losers try to create an unlevel electoral playing field, no matter which side of the political divide does it — but so long as Frum has raised the point, it’s worth clarifying the relevant details.
Frum’s example is a 2004 effort in Colorado, in which some on the left considered a similar plan: allocate the state’s electoral votes proportionally, instead of a winner-take-all system.
So Frum has a point about the hypocrisy of progressive complaints in 2013? Actually, no.

In 2004, the Colorado measure was crafted by activists, but Democrats didn’t support it. Indeed, neither the state nor national Democratic Party had anything to do with the idea, and offered it no backing. In contrast, in 2013, we see the exact opposite: the election-rigging schemes were endorsed by the Republican National Committee, and have enjoyed the support of many state GOP policymakers.
In 2004, some liberal groups wanted the matter on the Colorado ballot; in 2013, Republican state lawmakers wanted to pursue this through the legislative process.
In 2004, progressive activists eyed proportional electoral-vote distribution, which is also a bad idea, but is different than what the right has proposed in 2013 — allocation of electoral votes in “blue” battleground states, and only “blue” battleground states, based on gerrymandered district lines.
In other words, Frum is drawing a parallel between two developments that really aren’t especially similar.

I have been almost uniquely skeptical among my media friends about Marco Rubio — the junior senator from Florida who won a three-way contest in 2010 and knows his way around a party-issued Amex card — running for president in 2016.
Sure, the media loves him. He’s the Latin Ronald Reagan who will save an easily bored and distracted press corps from a future presidential race that seems destined to be dominated by yet another Clinton.
The GOP, for its part, has eagerly pushed Rubio out front, hoping the Os at the end of his first and last names will lure millions of mainly Mexican-American Hispanic voters to the Cuban-American side of the voting aisle, (though polls show the reverse trend may be taking hold.)
So why the skepticism?
Rubio has issues, two of which are named David Rivera, who lost his House seat but not his potential to embarrass his BFF in a presidential contest; and Jim Greer, the former state GOP chair who could loudly remind folks at his corruption trial next week that he was the guy paying Rubio’s party credit card bills when Marco was state House speaker.
But my main source of doubt has been the notion that Jeb Bush, Rubio’s political mentor, is very likely running for president himself.
The theory among pro-Jeb sources is that with the party’s Obama derangement fever finally breaking, Bush the Younger, also known as the son who should have been president, or who at least would have gotten Hurricane Katrina right, is in the best position to take advantage. House Republicans’ ratings are in the basement. Fox News’ slip is showing after blowing the election. And factions of the tea party are actually considering changing their name.
