  22. Saturday Tailgate: Players who could decide Alabama-A&M

Saturday’s game between No. 1 Alabama and No. 6 Texas A&M doesn’t lack for star power. There’s Nick Saban and Kevin Sumlin, two of the finest coaches in the country – with Saban in the mix for one of the top coaches in the history of college football. There’s Alabama quarterback AJ McCarron, one of the most successful players at his position in recent memory. There’s Johnny Manziel, the reigning Heisman Trophy winner.

Then there are those individuals who stand in the background. McCarron or Manziel could end up deciding the final result; there’s equal chance that the game comes down to a player in the shadows, one who steps forward and leads his team to victory with a big play, series or quarter.

Here are three somewhat overlooked players from each team with the potential to alter the complexion of Saturday’s game:

WR Christion Jones. Jones proved his explosiveness in the win against Virginia Tech, scoring once on a kickoff return, once on a punt return and once in the passing game.

RT Austin Shepherd. Shepherd, like center Ryan Kelly, was penciled into the starting lineup on the first day of spring drills. But both he and Kelly need to do more to handle A&M’s athletic front seven.

CB Geno Smith. Though not listed on Alabama’s two-deep due to an offseason violation of team rules, Smith is going to be immensely vital to the Tide’s coverage plans.

    Texas A&M

DT Alonzo Williams. Although A&M’s run defense has been subpar, Williams has given the Aggies some disruption along the middle of the defensive line. Williams could shuffle the pocket, making McCarron move his feet, and give the Aggies’ secondary an enormous boost.

LB Nate Askew. A former wide receiver recently converted to linebacker, Askew has the size to handle the strong side, the speed to run with tight ends and the offensive background to be a pesky presence in coverage.

K Taylor Bertolet. Alabama could win by 14 points. So could Texas A&M. Or, perhaps, the Tide and Aggies come down to a field goal – so Bertolet, as much as any player, could lift the Aggies to victory.

  23. 3 things to know about Johnny Manziel, Texas A&M’s star quarterback

    1. Johnny has made the full heel turn.

    2. Johnny’s gonna run. Or at least he’s gonna try.

    3. Saturday will determine whether he can win his second Heisman Trophy.

  24. My boys can’t contain themselves.

    Go Aggies! I’m a Texas girl! :)
