Chris Christie–> I’m sad. So sad. Look how sad I am. I was lied to and it makes me sad. I haven’t gotten angry yet. Just sad. #bridgegate
*************
Go have a seat, Chris Christie. You’re only fooling yourself.
Ametia, I’m loving listening to “Do You Know The Way To San Jose”.
Christie asked Cuomo to back off investigating Fort Lee. In mid-December.
http://www.dailykos.com/story/2014/01/09/1268413/-Andrew-Cuomo-needs-to-put-the-last-nail-in-Christie-s-coffin#
In what seems like ages ago in the Chris Christie Gina Close-a-your-bridgeda scandal saga, the WSJ reported something that looked exceptionally fishy at the time; that Christie had talked with Andrew Cuomo and asked him to get Patrick Foye, the executive director of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, to back off investigating the Fort Lee bridge closure.
Mr. Christie, a Republican, complained in a private phone call to Mr. Cuomo, a Democrat, that Patrick Foye, the executive director of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, was pressing too hard to get to the bottom of why the number of toll lanes onto the bridge from Fort Lee, N.J. was cut from three to one in early September, according to this person. The lane closures occurred without notice to local authorities, officials have said, and snarled traffic for a week in the small borough on the Hudson River bluffs.
According to the WSJ story, that phone call was the week of December 12.
Yeah. Kind of makes Christies little press “performance piece” this morning look like the firehose of lies that it actually was.
Among the mounting stream of evidence that shows Christie knew damn well what was going on, this one would seem to be the final nail in the coffin.
And it’s very easily proven … if Governor Cuomo has the backbone to be a proper partisan and put his boot on Christie’s neck.
He doesn’t have to do it personally. Heck, the WSJ would be HAPPY to report the facts if they just got the nod … they’re the ones with the connections to “a person familiar with the matter,” which by the sound of it has to be someone in Cuomo’s office anyway.
Ball is in your court, Andy. End Christie’s political career.

What #bridgegate tells us about the GOP
By Liberal Librarian
I know we’ve all had a laugh at New Jersey governor Chris Christie’s fall from grace. Documents have come to light that his top aides were involved in closing access lanes to the George Washington Bridge as political payback for the mayor of Fort Lee not giving Christie his endorsement for re-election. And his marathon news conference today, even though being massaged by the feckless national punditry, was a farce of gigantic proportions.
But there’s something serious underlying the Christie debacle.
In a fit of vindictiveness, he either ordered an act which would perforce put lives at risk, or, like Henry II, mumbled “Will no one rid me of this turbulent mayor”, and loyal aides knowing his bent acted upon his ambiguous wishes. Either way, Christie does not come off well.
His press conference was a master class in GOP damage control. He spent the majority of the conference in casting himself as the victim. Another chunk he spent in excoriating his mendacious staff for lying to him. (Note, he was angry for them “lying” to him, not for their actions.) He spared almost no thought for the very real danger in which he put the people he was elected to serve.
That speaks to the core of the modern Republican Party. It really has no concern for regular people. They’re merely voters to be conned into supporting the party. Once electoral success is achieved, they can be dispensed with as so many pawns on chessboard. The GOP playbook when caught in malfeasance is to cast about for blame, play the victim, and ignore the real damage done. We see this in the fight over unemployment insurance. Anyone with a soul would realize that there people who are still feeling the aftershocks of the Great Recession, and that help is still needed. But those people are so much chaff for a wider political agenda, which is to destroy the last vestiges of the Great Society, which the modern GOP hates with a visceral hatred.
Christie is merely the grandest expression of a deeply seeded Republican pathology. Republicans love their country; they just happen to hate most of the people who inhabit it. People are merely means to an end, and that end is power. The powerful to whom they’re handmaidens have no concern for ordinary people, and that mindset informs their political minions. One could say that their worldview boils down to “The beatings will continue until morale improves”; however, they don’t care about morale, they just employ the beatings to maintain control.
So, as we chuckle and chortle at Chris Christie, remember that the clown masks a deadly serious persona. The bullying, the misanthropy, and the lack of empathy are not bugs; they’re a well-designed feature.
http://theobamadiary.com/2014/01/09/what-bridgegate-tells-us-about-the-gop/
Naturally the WaPo has an entirely different SPIN ON Christie’s performance, but they did paint him as the VICTIM with that “THEY LIED TO ME” BullSHIT.
Post Partisan: It’s the lies that hurt the most
Chris Christie does a good grovel. He apologized and apologized, admitted responsibility — the usual buck stops with him stuff. It was, all in all, a terrific performance, apparently heartfelt and convincing but where the New Jersey governor was most persuasive is where he noted where he had gone wrong: Somehow his staffers thought they could lie to him.

Chris Christie’s problem is that he’s really, truly a bully

The release of e-mails suggesting that Gov. Chris Christie’s top aides choked off transportation to a small town as political retribution against the town’s mayor are a huge deal. I wouldn’t go so far as Jonathan Chait, who says “they will probably destroy Christie’s chances in 2016.” But they make it much likelier that something will emerge to destroy Christie’s chances in 2016.

Kornacki & Maddow: Christie was trying to run out clock on Assembly subpoena power.
by hungrycoyote
Last night Rachel Maddow dedicated her entire show to the New Jersey Bridge scandal, and who could blame her? When other cable news outlets scarcely mentioned it, Rachel Maddow has covered this story numerous times over the last several months. Below the orange squiggly, I have embedded the video for each segment of last night’s show, except the final one which is just below.
All the cable news channels had been covering the scandal all day long when the 22 pages of documents were released that linked the scandal to the office of Governor Chris Christie now that there was definitive proof that a member of Christie’s staff gave the order to close three lanes to the George Washington Bridge.
It was seven hours after the release of the documents that Chris Christie put out a statement. My reaction was, “It’s been hours since the emails broke … this all he could come up with?” Since Chris Christie wasn’t appearing before cameras yesterday, the news stations kept playing clips of previous comments he made about the brewing scandal and how there was nothing to see here. I saw clips of him saying that he had interviewed everybody on his staff, and knew every thing there was to know about the closing of the lanes, and this was what he decided to go with?

Staffer’s head rolls as Christie looks to save neck over Bridgegate.
http://nypost.com/2014/01/09/staffers-head-rolls-as-christie-looks-to-save-neck-over-bridgegate/
Heads are rolling over Bridgegate.
Gov. Chris Christie on Thursday fired the top aide who brazenly plotted the crippling lane closures on the George Washington Bridge, multiple sources told The Post.
He also forced his two-time campaign manager – who was aware of the vengeful scheme and later played a role in the damage control effort – to take his name out of the running to lead New Jersey’s Republican party.
Bridget Anne Kelly, 41, the deputy chief of staff who sent an email to longtime Christie crony and then-Port Authority official David Wildstein that read “Time for some traffic problems in Fort Lee” – was sent packing.
And Bill Stepien – who was only named as the new head the state GOP on Tuesday – also lost a lucrative contract with the Republican Governor’s Association, of which Christie is the head.
Stunning emails released Wednesday disclosed Kelly, Wildstein and Stepien all knew of the scheme to punish Fort Lee Mayor Mark Sokolich for not endorsing Christie in last year’s election.

The new GOP anti-poverty agenda examined
By Ryan Cooper
January 8 at 6:24 pm
Today, top Republicans like Marco Rubio and Paul Ryan are looking to soften their image on poverty, uneasy at the prospect of a Democratic Party preparing to pummel them mercilessly over their eagerness to cut food stamps and unemployment benefits. It’s particularly opportune given that today is the 50th anniversary of Lyndon Johnson’s War on Poverty.
But their proposals fall short. Instead of addressing the definitional problem of poverty — namely, that the poor don’t have enough money — they retreat into vague rhetoric and window dressing.
This is a bit disappointing. Last week, conservative reformist Michael Strain published an article outlining a conservative jobs agenda. It was actually quite a bold piece; if you look past the Obama-bashing there was some real policy meat there that could make a serious dent in unemployment. Aside from the details of the plan, the key point is that Strain acknowledged that any jobs plan will necessarily involve allocating some resources — practically speaking, by spending some money. Strain suggests some infrastructure spending, for example.
Unfortunately, that boldness is precisely what is missing from today’s new Republican anti-poverty agenda. Consider Marco Rubio’s address he gave today: there are two policy changes in it. First, turn welfare programs over to the states; second, replace the earned income tax credit with a “wage enhancement” for “qualifying low-wage jobs.” Rand Paul has suggested “economic freedom zones,” in which small areas get the usual dose of tax cuts and deregulation. Or here’s the agenda of other Republicans, including Mike Lee, Paul Ryan, and Eric Cantor, as summarized by Annie Lowry and Ashley Parker:

Morning Plum: Dems slam GOP Senate candidates over unemployment benefits
By Greg Sargent
January 9 at 9:07 am
Is it conceivable that the 2014 elections might not prove to be exclusively about Obamacare and nothing else?
With the battle over unemployment benefits raging, Dems are increasingly focused on the fact that some House Republicans expected to oppose an extension under any circumstances — no matter what “pay for” is agreed to — are also running for Senate.
Today, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee will hit multiple Republicans who are vying for their party’s Senate nomination in red states over the Republican refusal to extend benefits – in keeping with the broader Dem effort to make 2014 about economic mobility and inequality. Dems are targeting GOP Senate candidates in Georgia, Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Montana, New Hampshire, and West Virginia. Here’s the release hitting House GOPers running for Senate in Georgia:

IL Gov. Candidate Sorry For Call To Lower Minimum Wage
Daniel Strauss – January 9, 2014, 9:17 AM EST
The Illinois Republican gubernatorial candidate who said the state’s minimum wage should be lowered is now backtracking.
A day after an interview surfaced in which equity investor Bruce Rauner, one of a handful of Republicans in the gubernatorial race, said that the minimum wage should be lowered by a dollar rather than raised, he backtracked.
“I made a mistake. I was flippant and I was quick,” Rauner said in an interview with The Chicago Tribune. “I should have said, ‘Tie the Illinois minimum wage to the national wage and, in that context, with other changes in being pro-business, I support raising the national minimum wage.’ I’m OK with that.”
Specifically, Rauner argued that Illinois’ minimum wage should be lowered from $8.25 to $7.25. The current federal minimum wage is $7.25 an hour. That proposal contrasts with calls by Gov. Pat Quinn (D), who Rauner is hoping to replace, to raise the minimum wage to $10 an hour. President Barack Obama and national Democrats have also called on raising the federal minimum wage to $10.10 an hour.
But going forward, Rauner said he plans to push for linking Illinois minimum wage to the national minimum wage.
“I will advocate moving the Illinois minimum wage back to the national minimum wage,” Rauner said. “I think we’ve got to be competitive here in Illinois. It’s critical we’re competitive. We’re hurting our economy by having the minimum wage above the national. We’ve got to move back to the national.”

Meet The Eight People Who Are Ruining Chris Christie’s Week
Dylan Scott – January 9, 2014, 6:00 AM EST
The George Washington Bridge scandal that has ensnared New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) this week is a drama with a full cast of characters, each with a particular part to play.
You have the instigator, the target, the muscle and the Democrats ready to pounce. Keeping everybody straight can be tough. We’re here to help.
Here’s a rundown of everybody that you need to know:
David Wildstein, Former Port Authority Of New York And New Jersey Official
He was appointed to the post by Christie, and he and the governor have reportedly been friends since high school. Wildstein has been at the heart of the scandal. Another Port Authority official told New Jersey lawmakers that it was Wildstein who had ordered the lane closures on the George Washington Bridge. He allegedly instructed bridge officials to conceal the closures from police and other local authorities.
It was Wednesday’s leak of Wildstein’s exchange with one of Christie’s top advisors about the lane closures that brought the scandal inside the governor’s house. Wildstein resigned from his post on Dec. 7.

Democrats React to GWB Lane Closure Revelations
By Michael Aron
Chief Political Correspondent
Gov. Chris Christie’s office was silent all day until it put out a late afternoon statement.
The man who has spearheaded the legislative Democrats’ probe into what’s become known as “Bridgegate” called an news conference earlier that attracted a crowd.
“What we’ve seen today is a sad day for New Jersey. The documents that have been published are both shocking and outrageous. They show government at its worst. Among other things, they call into question the honesty of this governor and his staff,” said Assemblyman John Wisniewski.
The link between David Wildstein and Christie’s Deputy Chief of Staff Bridget Kelly brings the scandal into the governor’s office for the first time.
The first question to Wisniewski was, did Christie know about any of this?

Should’ve had this presser LAST YEAR, Krispie Kreame.
New Jersey state senator called today for a federal investigation into Gov. Chris Christie’s administration over allegations that top Christie appointees orchestrated traffic jams on the country’s busiest bridge last year as part of a political vendetta against a city mayor.
September lane closures near the George Washington Bridge connecting New Jersey to Manhattan snarled traffic for days in Fort Lee, New Jersey — an event that was not only inconvenient but also potentially delayed emergency services, endangering people’s lives, New Jersey state Sen. Ray Lesniak told CNN’s “New Day.”
The controversy intensified Wednesday with the surfacing of e-mails suggesting that appointees of the Republican governor orchestrated the closures to punish Fort Lee Mayor Mark Sokolich, a Democrat who wouldn’t support Christie at the polls. Christie and his staff originally blamed the closures and the traffic delays on a mishandled traffic study.
Christie on Wednesday called the conduct outrageous and said he knew nothing about it.
He is expected to hold a news conference at 11 a.m. today in Trenton, his office said. CNN will carry it live.
