    The ACA Surge Blackout
    MARCH 30, 2014, 12:52 PM

Update: And the 4th-ranking Republican in the Senate is already accusing the administration of cooking the books. I really think the possibility that the ACA might actually work never occurred to them.

It’s not in itself that big a deal, but I’m somewhat amazed by what amounts to a de facto blackout by major news media on a developing story that’s really obvious if you read the invaluable Charles Gaba, or even the White House blog: a huge surge in Obamacare enrollments in the final days of the signup period. The print sources I read are still putting out basically downbeat reports about the ACA, with maybe a mention 10 paragraphs in that exchange enrollments passed the 6 million mark last week. I don’t watch cable news, but from what I hear it’s all still Malaysian airways.

In the end, I guess it won’t matter in a direct sense; the final number for year 1, which looks likely to be very close to the original 7 million projection, will eventually come out. But you wonder why news media that are happy to speculate about the 2016 election aren’t interested in at least putting out a heads-up about the strong possibility of a bombshell number next week.

Rick Santorum: Uninsured people are deadbeats and ‘won’t make a payment’ for Obamacare
    By David Edwards
    Sunday, March 30, 2014 13:11 EDT

Former Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum on Sunday suggested that “many” people who had purchased private insurance plans through the Affordable Care Act were basically deadbeats who “won’t make a payment.”

In an interview on Meet the Press, guest host Chuck Todd asked the possible 2016 candidate if he “felt vindicated” for attacking President Barack Obama’s health reform law during his 2012 presidential run.

“Well, it was the issue in 2010 that caused us to have the tea party revolution,” Santorum asserted. “It was all around the issue of health care. And this election is going to all around the issue of health care.

    ………………………………………………………………………………………………

While admitting that 15 million people were expected to be covered under the law, he argued that many of those people already had insurance.

“And you look at these number of 6 million people [signing up], I talked to insurance companies, you’re looking at anywhere from 20 to 50 percent of those who haven’t made a premium payment yet,” Santorum opined. “Many of them are uninsured and probably won’t make a premium payment.”

“So, I think you’re going to see these numbers not be as encouraging as the administration has pointed out.”

In Midterm Campaign, Bill Clinton Urges Democrats to Embrace Health Care Reform
    By Joe Conason – March 29, 2014

Defending the Affordable Care Act in his memorable nominating speech at the 2012 Democratic National Convention, Bill Clinton did as he often advises his party’s elected officials: Don’t run away from the argument; confront it directly instead. During his own political career, the former president has done both.

“When the president asked me to speak for him in North Carolina, I said that I would do it — but that I could only do it and be effective if he let me explain and defend the health care deal,” Clinton recalled this week, speaking not only about the 2012 election but the midterm campaign now underway.

“I thought that Democrats had a tendency to shy away from things they had done that were unpopular, (and) talk about positions they had that were popular. And that my own experience had convinced me — going back to ’94 and even more when I was governor — that that was always a terrible mistake. That you had to turn in toward all controversies and embrace them — even if you said you were wrong or a mistake was made. You couldn’t not deal with it.”

That is the opposite of current conventional Washington wisdom, which insists that Obamacare’s unpopularity will cost Democrats control of the Senate as well as the House of Representatives. But the moment may have arrived when they will heed Clinton again — because both public opinion data and the facts on the ground are taking a significant turn.

Sen. Barrasso: Administration ‘Cooking The Books’ On Obamacare Enrollment
    By Heather March 30, 2014 10:56 am – 17 Comments

From this week’s Fox News Sunday, Sen. John Barrasso accused the Obama administration of “cooking the books” on the Obamacare enrollment numbers, but as Jason Easley at PoliticusUSA pointed out, it’s more likely that he and host Chris Wallace are “trying to pass off some Republican book cooking of their own as fact, in order to portray the ACA as a total failure.”

Chuck Todd Asks NJ Senator What It Will Take To Accept Christie’s Side Of The Story
    By Nicole Belle March 30, 2014 9:41 am – 116 Comments

Let’s see, NJ Governor Chris Christie had the New Jersey taxpayers pay for an investigation led by an attorney with close ties to a key ally. Said lawyer does not interview the three key players in the scandal he was appointed to investigate. Throw in a lot of slut-shaming and the hocus pocus of a “body language expert” to determine that Hoboken mayor Dawn Zimmer was obviously lying because she yawned and what you have is an “investigation” that “exonerates” Chris Christie without uncovering what actually happened.

My God, Democrats, what more do you need to believe that Chris Christie is innocent and absolutely deserves the GOP presidential nomination in 2016?

What a surprise that that is EXACTLY the framing that Chuck Todd — substituting for David Gregory on Meet the Press– took with NJ State Senator Loretta Weinberg.

That was a perfect tee up for Weinberg to hit with a laundry list of everything that was wrong with the report, which thankfully, she did.

But still, anyone with two braincells to rub together (which may or may not include Todd, based on his questions) can see all the red flags and laughability of how this report exonerates Christie. Rather than accept it at face value in his interview with Weinberg (or earlier, with Christie ally Rudy Giuliani), how hard would it be to operate from a place of factual analysis?

What am I thinking? This is Chuck Todd; that’s just not in his wheelhouse.

Katie Zezima: Just How Popular Was Michelle Obama’s Visit To China?

According to a tally by the U.S. Embassy in Beijing, photos, videos and stories about Michelle Obama’s visit to China garnered more than 1 billion page views. Yes, that’s billion with a B.It’s probably not too far-fetched of a notion, according to Cheng Li, director of the John L. Thornton China Center at the Brookings Institution. ”This is really Michelle fever in China,” he said.Cheng said Obama and her family –

her mother, Marian Robinson, and daughters, Malia and Sasha, traveled with her — showed respect for Chinese traditions and deftly weaved in diplomacy with lighter moments in a way that made the Chinese want to see what she was doing and where she was going. ”Chinese do not only see this leader to leader. They see it family to family and in a broader context the respect of the two great countries,” he said. “This is why people got so excited.

Kate Nocera: Univision Works Overtime To Get Latinos Enrolled In Obamacare

The Obama administration has been working overtime in recent months to enroll uninsured Latinos — one of the groups most likely to be uninsured — but it’s not just the White House making a concerted effort. For more than a year, the Spanish-language television network Univision has embarked on their own company-wide effort to get Latinos signed up on the exchanges, working through newscasts, special programming, advertising partnerships, and a dedicated health care website. Univision has not only been providing information to their viewers as to how to sign up but openly encouraging them to do so.

The network’s “empowerment initiatives” team — which focuses primarily on health and educational programming — began looking for partners to help their audience find coverage last year. Univision ultimately went with the California Endowment and the Ford Foundation, launching in earnest last April. The company makes no bones about what they were trying to do. Empowerment Initiatives Director Stephen Keppel told BuzzFeed that the company thinks “it’s better to have health insurance than not to have it” and because of the high number of uninsured Latinos, it was an important initiative for them to take on.

Addicting Info: Ted Cruz Tries To Use Facebook To Prove No One Likes Obamacare And It Blows Up In His Face

The Tea Party crusade against the Affordable Care Act (ACA) hit a huge snag this week. On March 24, 2014, Texas Tea Party Senator, Ted Cruz, decided to put up a ‘quick poll,’ about the ACA on his facebook page. Problem? The Koch brothers don’t control the conversation on social media, the people do.

Ask a question, get an answer. The question Rafael ‘Ted’ Cruz asked on facebook was simple. Are you better off now than you were before the ACA, also called Obamacare, was signed into law, four years ago? Nearly 40,000 comments later, the resounding answer from people all across the country was YES.

Obamacare may have already brought the biggest increase in health coverage in this state in 50 years

Last week when the government announced it would give anyone who has started an Obamacare application a few more weeks to finish them, that was the last straw for U.S. Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers of Spokane.

“When does this get ridiculous?” she heckled, calling the delay another travesty in an unworkable law that continues to “hit people where it hurts the most.”

OK, it wasn’t really her last straw. For Republicans, that came years ago. But it’s a sign of how pitched the fight over Obamacare still is that a move to help a few more people sign up for health insurance can trigger that kind of condemnation.

McMorris Rodgers is head of the House GOP conference and so she sends out regular news releases like that. None of them mention that more than 50,000 people in her own district have signed up for this dreaded Obamacare.

In fact, despite all the problems — the botched rollout, the computer glitches, the furor over some canceled policies — Obamacare may have already brought the biggest increase in health coverage in this state since the 1960s, when the Medicaid program for the poor first passed.

  24. New G.O.P. Bid to Limit Voting in Swing States

    http://www.nytimes.com/2014/03/30/us/new-gop-bid-to-limit-voting-in-swing-states.html?_r=1

CINCINNATI — Pivotal swing states under Republican control are embracing significant new electoral restrictions on registering and voting that go beyond the voter identification requirements that have caused fierce partisan brawls.

The bills, laws and administrative rules — some of them tried before — shake up fundamental components of state election systems, including the days and times polls are open and the locations where people vote.

Republicans in Ohio and Wisconsin this winter pushed through measures limiting the time polls are open, in particular cutting into weekend voting favored by low-income voters and blacks, who sometimes caravan from churches to polls on the Sunday before election.

Democrats in North Carolina are scrambling to fight back against the nation’s most restrictive voting laws, passed by Republicans there last year. The measures, taken together, sharply reduce the number of early voting days and establish rules that make it more difficult for people to register to vote, cast provisional ballots or, in a few cases, vote absentee.

In all, nine states have passed measures making it harder to vote since the beginning of 2013. Most have to do with voter ID laws. Other states are considering mandating proof of citizenship, like a birth certificate or a passport, after a federal court judge recently upheld such laws passed in Arizona and Kansas. Because many poor people do not have either and because documents can take time and money to obtain, Democrats say the ruling makes it far more difficult for people to register.
