Incumbent Texas Lt. Governor David Dewhurst and Texas State Senator Dan Patrick debated in WFAA’s studios Wednesday night for the Republican runoff for lieutenant governor. When when asked about women’s healthcare, Dan Patrick — the senator who wants to be lieutenant governor – said, “Look this is a myth that Planned Parenthood has anything to do with women’s health.

Er, okay then. That’s totally not true. Sorta like he just claimed the earth is flat.
But this shouldn’t surprise anyone because last week, this Texas state senator said, “I don’t care if every Planned Parenthood clinic in America goes out of business. In fact, that would be a great goal. More babies would live and women would get great health care from doctors who actually care about them.”

Harry Reid Rips Chuck Todd and the Corporate Media for Covering for Republicans

During his interview with MSNBC’s Chuck Todd today, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) ripped Todd and other Beltway journalists for not being honest about what the Republican Party is doing.
Chuck Todd tried to float the old both sides do it false equivalency to explain why the Senate is obstructed, but Harry Reid was having none of it. Reid said, “One of the problems the has with modern-day journalism is everything you do a tit for tat. You won’t call things the way they actually exist. What has happened here is that the Republicans have stopped everything from happening, and there’s no question that that meeting took place. That was the agreement made. They know who was there. They know what has happened since then, so you can give me the tit for tat all you want, but the fact is we want to legislate. We want to legislate and take votes.”
Sen. Reid spoke the truth. Chuck Todd is one of the biggest purveyors of the Republican talking point infused Beltway media groupthink. Todd is a reliable talking head that will always suggest that both sides do it, when the reality is that one side held a meeting after President Obama took office and decided that they were going to obstruct the Obama agenda.
The media has been covering up for the Republicans, and it was good to hear Harry Reid call it out. No matter what people like Chuck Todd want to claim, both sides aren’t doing it. One side has decided to shut down the legislative process. Democrats are still managing to accomplish some remarkable things despite the obstruction, but Chuck Todd doesn’t want to talk about the ugly politics of Republican obstruction. Instead, Todd is living in a magical land where both sides do it, and all politics is an extended version of the election horse race that the mainstream press is so addicted to.

WASHINGTON–The Republican-controlled U.S. House voted Thursday along party lines to establish a select committee to investigate the 2012 Benghazi terrorist attack on a diplomatic mission that left four Americans dead.
The resolution to create the panel was approved 232-186, with seven Democrats voting with Republicans.

CNN host explodes after guest denies calling Michelle Obama’s Nigerian girl tweets ‘cheap’

A CNN segment about Monica Lewinsky on Thursday turned into a shouting match after one guest criticized First Lady Michelle Obama for her efforts on social media to help kidnapped girls in Nigeria.
During Ashleigh Banfield’s Legal View program on CNN, The Blaze’s Will Cain connected media coverage of Lewinsky to the #BringBackOurGirls movement, which is a social media campaign to call attention to nearly 300 girls that have been kidnapped by the Boko Haram terrorist organization. Michelle Obama had made news on Wednesday by becoming the most prominent personality to join the campaign.
“We do cheap outrage on TV, we do cheap hashtag activism when it comes to the girls with Boko Haram, and this is cheap,” Cain complained on Thursday.
“Whoa, whoa, whoa,” CNN contributor Mel Robbins interrupted. “I don’t think you want to connect the activism that got the world to start to pay attention to the girls with what happened with Monica Lewinsky.”
“I’m telling you putting a tweet up with a hashtag, you didn’t do your duty today,” Cain insisted.
“That’s disgusting to say about over 200 girls who are — what do you expect the first lady to do?” CNN host Don Lemon asked.
“I wasn’t necessarily targeting the first lady exclusively,” Cain replied.
“That’s whose photo is on the front page of the paper today,” Lemon pointed out. “So, who are you targeting then when you say that?”

Vulnerable Democrat Gives Stunningly Strong Defense Of Obamacare At Hearing

In a flipping of the proverbial script, a Senate Democrat facing a tough re-election race used a confirmation hearing of Sylvia Mathews Burwell, nominated to head the Department of Health and Human Services, to advocate forcefully in favor of Obamacare.
While Republican senators mostly went through the motions with their anti-Obamacare talking points or outright endorsed Burwell as Kathleen Sebelius’s replacement, Sen. Kay Hagan (D-NC) used her time to trumpet the benefits of Medicaid expansion — and emphasize the downside of not expanding.
Left unsaid, but strongly implied, was that her opponent, North Carolina House Speaker Thom Tillis, who locked up the GOP nomination earlier this week, had been instrumental in stopping the state from expanding Medicaid under the law.
“Last year in North Carolina, our state legislature and governor decided against expanding the state’s Medicaid program,” Hagan said as she started her questioning, “and as a result, about 500,000 people who would have qualified for coverage through Medicaid are not now able to do so.”
“These are some of the most vulnerable in our society,” she said, “who will continue to seek care in emergency rooms and then will leave chronic conditions unmanaged, which we know is detrimental to their health and the economy.”

Bible in high-school studies is part of Hobby Lobby president’s evangelization push

OKLAHOMA CITY — Steve Green’s faith led him to the U.S. Supreme Court, where he’s argued the nation’s new health care law and its requirement that his business provide certain types of birth control to employees violates his religious freedoms.
At the same time, the president of the Hobby Lobby chain of craft stores is working to add the Bible to the curriculum of public high schools nationwide. His purpose, stated more clearly at some times than at others, is for students to learn its text and put America on a righteous course.
“This nation is in danger because of its ignorance of what God has taught,” Green said last year to the National Bible Association, announcing his plan for the high school course. “There are lessons from the past that we can learn from, the dangers of ignorance of this book. We need to know it, and if we don’t know it, our future is going to be very scary.”
Green has established a beachhead in his home state of Oklahoma, where the public Mustang School District in suburban Oklahoma City will begin teaching a class about the Bible as an elective beginning this fall. The goal is to place the Bible course in thousands of schools by 2017.
Green told the Mustang school board last fall that the one-year trial of the Bible curriculum developed by the Green Scholars Initiative wasn’t intended to proselytize or “go down denominational, religious-type roads,” and persuaded the board that the plan would pass any constitutional challenges.
That is possible, said Mark Chancey, a professor of religious studies at Southern Methodist University. But while a carefully constructed course about the Bible can be constitutional, it’s easy to cross a line.

Rand Paul’s latest ACA whopper

As most politicians realize, in order for a lie to serve its purpose, it has to be at least vaguely plausible. Politicians who go too far and make up an outlandish lie have done something counterproductive – people not only won’t believe the bogus claim, they’ll end up thinking less of the person telling the lie, instead of the intended target.
With this in mind, Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) sent out a newsletter to supporters last week claiming, “For every Kentuckian that has enrolled in Obamacare, 40 have been dropped from their coverage.”
That is, of course, demonstrably ridiculous, even by Rand Paul standards. In reality, an untold number of Kentuckians saw their old, substandard plans get phased out under the Affordable Care Act – such cancellations were common before the ACA, too – but these consumers transitioned to new coverage.
Besides, to suggest that these folks outnumber enrollees 40 to 1 is suggest Rand Paul is very bad at math – the remarkable success of Kentucky’s “Kynect” program makes the claim literally impossible. More than 413,000 people in the state have enrolled – multiply that number by 40 and you end up with a number far larger than the entire population of the state.

It was no small admission. Publicly, GOP leaders insist their election-year charade is actually a credible search for the facts, wherever they may lead. They’re going into this process, not on a partisan witch hunt, but as responsible public officials. House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) assured reporters this week that this is going to be “a serious investigation.”

Obamacare Is Already Providing A Big Boost To Public Hospitals

In yet another boost to the health care law, some publicly traded hospitals are claiming that provisions in the Affordable Care Act are already increasing their bottom lines.
During a call with investors on Wednesday, Community Health Systems CFO Larry Cash claimed that the company has already seen a decrease in self-pay admissions in the states that have expanded their Medicaid programs and predicted that the law would lower those kind of admissions from 8 percent to 4 percent over a three-year period. The CEOs of LifePoint Hospitals and HCA reported similar experiences: in states that expanded their Medicaid programs, Medicaid admissions grew, while the number of uninsured admissions declined at faster rates than in states that have yet to comply with the Medicaid provisions of the health care law.
“So far and as expected, the new health care law has been a net positive for LifePoint with respect to Medicaid expansion,” CEO Bill Carpenter said during the call. “In the seven states where we operate that have expanded coverage, we saw increasing Medicaid and decreasing self-pay volumes. Increases in Medicaid membership and health insurance exchange participation contributed measurably to our results in the quarter.”

Obamacare as legacy
I’d like to revisit something that Bill Kristol wrote back in 1993 about health care reform. At the time, he was talking about President Clinton’s failed attempt to reach that goal. But his words not only speak to the total obstruction from Republicans on this issue, they also give us a window into the idea of Obamacare as the critical transformative legacy of this Presidency.

In that last paragraph, Kristol outlined the basic philosophical difference between Democrats and Republicans: Democrats believe that government spending and regulation help the middle class and Republicans claim that efforts to restrain the government help them. What he suggested was that health care reform would legitimize the Democratic position “at the very moment we have begun rolling back that idea in other areas.”
In other words, Kristol said that when it comes to the epic battle between the two parties about the role of government, health care reform would transform the debate. That indicates that even beyond the positive outcomes of Obamacare, its passage and implementation will finally tilt the scales away from the Reagan philosophy of government as the problem. That’s what Republicans believe!
I’ll grant you that a lot of the American public isn’t there yet. But with the passage of every milestone indicating its success, we get closer to the day that happens. The replacement of Obamacare as the central issue for Republicans in the 2014 midterms by Benghazi! demonstrates that at some level they know that is underway.
That’s why I’m actually grateful to Republicans for re-naming the Affordable Care Act as Obamacare. It reminds me that when Scott Brown was elected to replace Ted Kennedy as the Senator from Massachusetts, and almost all others gave up hope, President Obama stood strong. He took the heat and continued the fight until it was done. Over the course of history, that will be his legacy.

Called by Republicans, Health Insurers Deliver Unexpected Testimony

House Republicans summoned a half-dozen health insurance executives to a hearing Wednesday envisioned as another forum for criticism of the Affordable Care Act. But insurers refused to go along with the plan, and surprised Republican critics of the law by undercutting some of their arguments against it.
Insurers, appearing before a panel of the Energy and Commerce Committee, testified that the law had not led to a government takeover of their industry, as some Republicans had predicted. Indeed, several insurers said their stock prices had increased in the last few years.
The executives also declined to endorse Republican predictions of a sharp increase in insurance premiums next year, saying they did not have enough data or experience to forecast prices. And they said they were already receiving federal subsidy payments intended to make insurance more affordable for low- and middle-income people.

North Korean screed against Obama illustrates ‘race-based’ worldview
SEOUL — In a recently published and lengthy racist screed, North Korea calls President Obama a “clown,” a “dirty fellow” and somebody who “does not even have the basic appearances of a human being.”
Propriety has never been a part of North Korean rhetoric, but rarely has Pyongyang so ferociously — and personally — attacked a U.S. leader, in this case pulling language right out of the American 1850s. The attack seems unabashed, except for one thing: Unlike most articles published by the North’s state-run news agency, this one wasn’t translated into English.
“He is a crossbreed with unclear blood,” the North says.
And later: Obama “still has the figure of monkey while the human race has evolved through millions of years.”

Study: On economics, Obama’s judges are the most liberal in 50 years

How liberal are President Obama’s judges? A new study by two political scientists tries to answer that question. Robert Carp and Kenneth Manning examine about 50,000 federal judicial opinions between 1932 and 2013, including 683 by Obama’s district court appointees, and code each opinion as liberal or conservative.
Overall, Obama’s judges basically resemble nominees of other Democratic presidents — except on decisions about economic or labor regulation. There, Obama’s judges are the most liberal of any president studied (going back to John F. Kennedy). Note that the study only includes district court judges, not Supreme Court judges:

Morning Plum: GOP giving up on fixing Latino problem before 2016

As you know, I’ve been arguing that if Republicans don’t move on immigration before the August recess, acting may be even harder next year, meaning Republicans may lose their chance to put their stamp on reform — and begin to fix their Latino problem — before the next presidential election. There’s been little indication that Republicans have given any thought to the immigration calendar, preferring only to focus on their inevitable Glorious Victory this fall.
Now Politico moves the ball forward with a story reporting that it is becoming increasingly apparent to many lawmakers that, if nothing happens this year, nothing is likely to happen until 2017 at the earliest. As Politico puts it, there is “growing pessimism on Capitol Hill that a sweeping immigration bill is achievable in President Barack Obama’s second term if nothing passes this year.”
Various factors are shaping this reality: The Senate bill expires at the end of the year. The GOP presidential primary will get underway next year. If Congress doesn’t act, Obama may have to act alone, making legislative reform harder still.
The big takeaway: Republicans appear aware the window for action is closing fast. And what this really means is that, if they continue to stall this year, they are in effect giving up on even trying to repair their Latino problem before another presidential election in which the Latino share of the vote is only going to rise in key states.

For reasons that aren’t altogether clear, House Republicans organized a hearing today to talk to insurance company officials about ACA data Republicans knew to be false. The result was predictable.
Well, it is exasperating when a group of lawmakers go to the trouble of creating their own reality and others refuse to go along.
The congressional hearing came against a backdrop of even more good news for those hoping to see the U.S. health care system succeed – Sarah Kliff reported on new federal data showing “improvements in hospital care have saved 15,000 lives” in the two years after the Affordable Care Act became law, thanks at least in part to provisions in the law intended to reduce readmissions and reduce hospital-acquired conditions.

Struggling to breathe new life into an old ‘scandal’

In May 2013, former IRS official Lois Lerner was called to provide testimony on what seemed like a big deal at the time: the alleged “controversy” surrounding the Internal Revenue service. She asserted her rights under the Fifth Amendment.
In May 2014, House Republicans decided they’re really upset about it.
The House voted 231-187 on Wednesday to hold former IRS official Lois Lerner in contempt of Congress for refusing to testify before House committees, in a party line vote that drew support from a handful of Democrats. […]
Maintaining Lerner did not break any laws, her lawyer William Taylor said in a statement that “it is unfortunate that the majority party in the House has put politics before a citizen’s constitutional rights.”
In theory, the House’s complaint – which does not need Senate approval – will be referred to a prosecutor, but most see it as unlikely that Lerner’s case will be pursued as a criminal matter.
Indeed, it’s worth remembering that no American has ever been successfully prosecuted for invoking their Fifth Amendment rights before Congress. The last time Congress tried was Joe McCarthy’s witch hunts a half-century ago.

Robert Leroy Johnson was born on this day in 1911. From Wikipedia:
“Robert Leroy Johnson (May 8, 1911 – August 16, 1938) was an American blues singer and musician. His landmark recordings in 1936 and 1937 display a combination of singing, guitar skills, and songwriting talent that has influenced later generations of musicians.
“As an itinerant performer who played mostly on street corners, in juke joints, and at Saturday night dances, Johnson had little commercial success or public recognition in his lifetime.
“Johnson’s records sold poorly during his lifetime. It was only after the reissue of his recordings in 1961 on the LP King of the Delta Blues Singers that his work reached a wider audience. Johnson is now recognized as a master of the blues, particularly of the Mississippi Delta blues style.
“He is credited by many rock musicians as an important influence; Eric Clapton has called Johnson “the most important blues singer that ever lived.”
“Johnson was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as an “Early Influence” in their first induction ceremony in 1986. In 2003, David Fricke ranked Johnson fifth in Rolling Stone.”
Thanks for this, Yahtc. Robert Johnson was the real deal, a lifetime favorite of mine. His tragic, early death is as much a loss to American music as those of Sam Cooke and Jimi Hendrix. Johnson’s music is absolutey timeless.
