COMING SOON: Tracee Ellis Ross, Anthony Anderson & Laurence Fishburne’s Star In ABC Sitcom “Black-ish” + VH1 ORDERS Tyra Banks’ Docuseries “TRANSAMERICA”
Tracee Ellis Ross, Anthony Anderson
and Laurence Fishburne star in the new ABC sitcom “Black-ish.”
Although ABC Networks has a checkered past when it comes to Black-family sitcoms (My Wife and Kids, Sister, Sisters, Family Matters) they are dipping their toes back in the water this fall with Anthony Anderson, Laurence Fishburne and Tracee Ellis Ross in “Black-ish.”
The new family sitcom was announced yesterday during the ABC Upfronts. According to the show’s Facebook page, “Black-ish” is “an all-new ABC comedy about staying true to your roots, while finding yourself!” Here’s a synopsis:
Black-ish will follow an upper-middle class black man, intent on raising his kids with some sense of cultural identity, in the face of an assault of constant contradictions and obstacles coming from various directions, insisting that his children be color-blind.
The show is scripted by Kenya Barris and produced by Laurence Fishburne’s Cinema Gypsy production company. Kenya, who loosely based the show on his life, added,
“I decided to do this project when I looked up and realized that everywhere I go I’m constantly the fly in buttermilk… I’m usually THE Black guy at work. We’re THE Black family in the neighborhood. My kids are basically THE Black kids at school. I think it’s kind of a situation of be careful what you wish for. It’s almost in like moving on up, I’ve sort of priced myself “out” of being Black.”
“Black-ish” will air Wednesdays at 9:30|8:30c this Fall on ABC!

FIX MY (BROKE) LIFE: Flex Alexander & Shanice NAB One-Hour Special On OWN After Financial Downfall
Remember 90s R&B singer Shanice and her actor husband Flex Alexander? Well the couple will be returning to the spotlight in an OWN special “Flex & Shanice” chronicling the couple’s financial downfall. Who knew? Get the deets and check out the trailer inside…
Grammy nominated 90s R&B singer Shanice and her husband Flex Alexander were on top of the world at one point in their lives. Shanice was climbing the charts with her hit single “I Love Your Smile” and her husband was the star of a hit scripted series “One on One” (also starring Kyla Pratt). And then it all came tumbling down.
Flex wasn’t booking any gigs and Shanice wasn’t recording any music so they decided to move into a rental home with five other family members, along with their two children (12-year-old Imani and 10-year-old Elijah) to make ends meet. Yes..nine people under one roof, including Shanice’s demanding and controlling mother/manager Crystal.
“It’s hard being a broke celebrity,” said Shanice.
We’re sure. And you gotta do what you gotta do.
Now things are starting to look up for the troubled couple with Flex finally getting work and Shanice returning to the studio. The duo seek advice from their celeb friends such as Kym Whitley and Babyface to help figure out their next steps to financial freedom.

Kerry Washington Effect: How TV Ditched Stereotypes to Make History
By Maria Elena Fernandez
As Olivia Pope likes to remind us, she has “handled” many high-profile and life-altering situations on “Scandal.” But now, everybody’s favorite fictional fixer, played by Emmy-nominated actress Kerry Washington, has taken care of something else: the lingering void in the TV landscape for more characters like her.
For the first time in TV history, four African-American actresses have landed dynamic starring roles on broadcast network shows at the same time — all of them either Oscar winners or nominees.
Some are calling it the Kerry Washington Effect.
On Fox’s “Red Band Society,” Octavia Spencer will play a no-nonsense nurse in charge of a pediatric ward where sick children live, while Taraji P. Henson plays a paroled drug dealer and mother on “Empire.” ABC has cast Viola Davis as a tough, mysterious criminal defense professor in “How to Get Away With Murder.” On NBC’s “State of Affairs,” Alfre Woodard is playing president of the United States, a ground-breaking role that would have seemed unimaginable just a few years ago.
“I can tell you that it’s so exciting to hear people say, ‘Madame President,'” Woodard told NBC News in an interview.

FIRST LOOK! ZAHARA AND SIBLINGS STAR IN ‘MALEFICENT’
It’s official! Zahara is an actress! The little one will make her Big Screen debut in the upcoming film, Maleficent, where Angelina Jolie stars as the evil witch.
Zahara and her brother Pax appear as royal children during Princess Aurora’s christening. Talk about coming in with a bang! The kids are only featured for a few minutes but it’s more than enough time for them to put on their acting faces.
Although three of her children are featured in Maleficent, Angelina Jolie tells media that she and fiance Brad Pitt are not hoping to raise movie stars. “Brad and I made the decision that we wouldn’t keep them from sets and the fun of making movies, but we wouldn’t [glorify it either] — we wouldn’t make it a good thing or a bad thing,” says Jolie. “But I would really prefer they do something else,” adds the star. “(A)fter two days of [filming Maleficent with the kids], Brad and I were so stressed we never wanted to do it again.”

Obamacare Critics Now Admit the Law Is Saving Lives, But Say the Price Still Isn’t Worth It
By Jonathan Cohn
Obamacare’s wonkier critics and even some of its supporters used to question whether the law is making people healthier. But that was before last week and the publication of a new study that found similar reforms in Massachusetts probably saved lives. Now many of those same critics are saying the old skepticism, though rooted in some reliable research of its own, may have been excessive. “The study looks good,” Megan McArdle wrote for Bloomberg View. “The Massachusetts study offers the most compelling evidence to date that increasing health insurance coverage translates into fewer deaths,” Philip Klein wrote in the Washington Examiner.
The new research hasn’t stopped the debate over the Affordable Care Act, of course. It’s simply shifted the terms a bit. Yes, the law’s critics agree, it appears that Obamacare is making people healthier. But the cost is high, they say—too high to justify.
Michael Cannon, from the Cato Institute, did some back-of-the-envelope calculations to show that every life that Obamacare saves costs between $4 and $5 million—a number, he says, that’s higher than the World Health Organization’s standard for cost-effectiveness. Cristopher Conover, writing for National Review, made a similar argument. So did Avik Roy. “As an economist might put it, this means there are likely to be policies out there that could save a lot more lives than RomneyCare does per dollar spent,” Cannon wrote at Forbes. “Or as Sarah Palin might put it, even if RomneyCare saved as many lives as this study suggests, it still probably deserves to be death-paneled.”

Indiana’s Pence sees the writing on the Medicaid wall
05/16/14 10:03 AM
By Steve Benen
When many Republican governors balked at Medicaid expansion under the Affordable Care Act, apparently motivated by nothing more than partisan spite, they may not have fully thought through the policy consequences. As we were reminded this week, hospitals in Medicaid-expansion states are treating fewer and fewer uninsured patients (i.e., patients who can’t pay their medical bills), while hospitals in GOP-led states struggle.
Just yesterday, Arkansas’ Surgeon General and the president of the Arkansas Hospital Association told state lawmakers there’s been “a dramatic decline in the number of uninsured patients hospitals are seeing” since the state embraced Medicaid expansion, in its case through the so-called private option. There’s been no similar decline in “red” states.
The question for Republican policymakers in non-Medicaid-expansion states, then, is how long they can reasonably expect to hold out. Or more to the point, how much longer they intend to prioritize their contempt for President Obama over their states’ best interests.
Aaron Carroll reported yesterday one far-right ACA opponent who is slowly yielding to reality.

Morning Plum: Scott Brown’s epic anti-Obamacare buffoonery
By Greg Sargent
May 16 at 9:08 am
I’ve been noting here for some time that one way to gauge how the politics of Obamacare are really playing — as opposed to the simplistic “it’s a massive disaster for terrified Dems” storyline preferred by some commentators — is to look at how Republicans are handling the issue.
Today Politico delivers in a big way with a deep dive into New Hampshire Senate candidate Scott Brown’s gyrations on Obamacare repeal. This is some epic buffoonery here, folks. There’s his support for Romneycare, the model for the national health law. But the best stuff is buried deep in the piece:
When asked in the past what he’d do instead, he’s previously served up word salad. Now he’s mumbling something about “grandfathering in” people benefiting from the law, and getting rapidly corrected by his spokesperson? This confirms, again, that the political difficulties of repeal are making GOP candidates feel obliged to pretend to have an alternative — but there’s no real policy space for an alternative that would do what Obamacare does without the tradeoffs the law requires, which in turn makes repeal still less tenable.

Former Sen. Scott Brown (R-Mass.), on the campaign trail in New Hampshire, talking about health care policy.
At one stop, he suggested repealing Obamacare but letting New Hampshire’s beneficiaries be “grandfathered in” so they don’t lose coverage.
Former Sen. Scott Brown’s (R-Mass.) spokesperson, also on the campaign trail in New Hampshire, almost immediately thereafter:
A spokeswoman walked that back in a subsequent conversation. “You can’t grandfather people from something you’re fully repealing,” she said, emphasizing Brown’s intent to wipe out Obamacare before entertaining a replacement.
Remember, Scott Brown isn’t a novice. He’s a former U.S. senator. He’s run for statewide office three times – in two states – over just four years, giving him plenty of time to hone his skills as a candidate and answer glaringly obvious questions. He’s basing much of his campaign platform on health care policy, despite the fact that he doesn’t actually have a health care policy of his own and doesn’t seem to have the foggiest idea what he’s talking about when addressing the health care policy he ostensibly opposes.
In this case, I’m not altogether sure what he was even trying to say. Brown seems to realize there are many Americans who currently benefit from the Affordable Care Act, and he also seems to realize they’d suffer if he successfully repeals the entirety of the law. So maybe they’d be “grandfathered in”? How would that work, exactly? According to his own aide, it wouldn’t work at all, which is why we’re apparently supposed to disregard what the candidate says about the candidate’s policy positions.
Meanwhile, Brown refuses to give an opinion on Medicaid expansion in his new, adopted home state of New Hampshire, which again, is an odd posture for a candidate basing his Senate campaign on health care policy.
Greg Sargent called it “epic buffoonery,” which seems more than fair under the circumstances

Folks have been telling me to watch HBO’s Game of Thrones for the longest but I kept putting it off because I knew I’d want to watch it all in an epic marathon and I needed the time. The show is in the middle of its 4th season right now and there’s 10 episodes per season. My vacation last week was the perfect time to binge-watch it.

Swiss to vote on $25 an hour minimum wage
Helena Bachmann, Special for USA TODAY
GENEVA, Switzerland – A vote on Sunday to establish a minimum wage of $25 an hour would make mostly immigrants here in agriculture, housekeeping, and catering among the world’s highest paid unskilled workforce.
The vote comes after hundreds of fast-food workers walked off their jobs in many U.S. cities and in more than 30 countries on Thursday in a protest for higher wages. If the Swiss proposal passes, the country would have the highest minimum wage in the world.
But some who would be eligible for the higher wage worry that it may do more harm than good.
Luisa Almeida is an immigrant from Portugal who works in Switzerland as a housekeeper and nanny. Almeida’s earnings of $3,250 a month are below the proposed minimum wage but still much more than she’d make in Portugal.
Since she is not a Swiss citizen, she cannot vote but if she could, “I would vote ‘no’,” she says.
“If my employer had to pay me more money, he wouldn’t be able to keep me on and I’d lose the job.”
Almeida’s concern illustrates the dilemma that faces the movement to have governments and not the market decide how much people should be paid at a minimum.

This GOP primary debate for Idaho governor is so bonkers, we don’t know where to start
By Eric W. Dolan

“Folks, you have a choice: A cowboy, a curmudgeon, a biker or a normal guy. Take your pick.”
That is what Harley Brown, a Republican candidate for governor, told the people of Idaho during a primary debate on Wednesday evening — and it’s an entirely apt description of the situation. Before you’re mistaken, Brown doesn’t consider himself the “normal” candidate in that list. He’s the leather-clad fed-fightin’ biker.
Brown has joined Walt Bayes and state Sen. Russ Fulcher in challenging two-term Gov. C.L. “Butch” Otter in the GOP primary.

A Decision That Helped Shape Michelle Obama
By SHERYL GAY STOLBERG
MAY 15, 2014
She was born into the segregated Chicago of the 1960s, when public schools actively resisted integration. But in 1975, the city, under pressure to comply with the landmark Supreme Court decision desegregating public schools, opened a racially integrated high school for high achievers that changed the young woman’s life.
Michelle Robinson, a graduate of that integrated school, is now Michelle Obama, the first African-American first lady of the United States. In this season of civil rights anniversaries — in particular the 60th, on Saturday, of the 1954 decision in Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, Kan. — she is talking in new and more deeply personal ways about race.
“She saw firsthand the impact of Brown v. Board of Education in her own life,” said Valerie Jarrett, a senior White House adviser and close friend of Mrs. Obama. “What she appreciates is the strength of diversity, how important it is to be in a community, a classroom, where you are hearing from all perspectives.”

Black leaders divided on whether to view Rand Paul as friend or foe
by Perry Bacon Jr. | May 16, 2014 at 9:00 AM
en. Rand Paul’s (R-Ky.) aggressive outreach to the black community over the last several months is dividing African-American leaders,as some are excited that a prominent conservative Republican is embracing their causes, while others argue that working with the Kentucky senator and a likely 2016 presidential candidate is a mistake.
Paul, openly acknowledging the Republican Party’s longtime struggles with African-American voters, is giving speeches at black colleges and meeting with key African-American pastors and leaders across the country. He is also taking stances, such as urging the restoration of voting rights for convicted felons and reducing the use of mandatory minimum sentences for drug crimes, that are unusual for a Republican.
“It’s extremely significant and I think quite encouraging for Senator Paul to not just raise these issues but also to be such a passionate advocate,” said Jotaka Eaddy, a senior director at the NAACP. She added, “It’s always positive when you have unexpected voices that are advocating around these principles.”
But Gerald Neal, one of Kentucky’s two black state senators, says that Paul is using this black outreach to cast himself as a different kind of Republican in preparation for his near-certain presidential run, while doing little to actually change policy. Paul is also a strong critic of President Obama, who remains deeply popular among blacks.
African-Americans who work with Paul “give an unnecessary and unwarranted pass to an individual whose actions are antithetical to the interests of the black community,” Neal said in an interview. “He is using you to his benefit.”

PUMA alive and well…in the GOP
Smartypants
In 2008, as it became clear that Barack Obama would be the Democratic nominee for president, a group of disgruntled Clinton supporters took on the moniker of PUMA – Party Unity, My Ass. But in the end, they weren’t able to divide the Democratic Party and Obama won…twice.
Nobody is giving that same moniker to a group of conservatives who are disenchanted with the Republican Party these days. But perhaps we should. If you remember, they are the group that organized the government shutdown over Obamacare – against Speaker Boehner’s wishes. You might have thought they’d fade into the woodwork after that debacle. But they haven’t. The very same people – Ed Meese, Ted Cruz, the Heritage Foundation, etc – met yesterday and developed a 10-page manifesto for the 2014 elections.

Woman with massive tumor says hospitals turned her away over lack of insurance
A Newton County woman told Channel 2 Action News that four hospitals turned her away before one agreed to remove a painful, massive non-cancerous tumor.
Doris Lewis, 59, said she had been trying to get insurance since her husband died a few years ago.
There was no sense of urgency, but then a huge tumor started growing inside her and she realized not having insurance presented a huge problem.
“It’s getting bigger every day,” Lewis said. “I can feel it on my body. My heart hurts a little bit.”
The tumor has been inside Lewis for two months and has reached the size of a beach ball.
“I didn’t know it was a tumor in there. I thought I was just gaining weight at first,” Lewis said.
Lewis told Jones that doctors are amazed when they see her.
“Some of the guys looked at me and said, ‘You got a tumor in there. That is so big. ‘Bout to pop,’” Lewis said.
She said a doctor told her the tumor is benign and it is wrapped around her ovaries.
Lewis said she has tried to get doctors to remove it, but no one would do the surgery because of some miscommunication and because she didn’t have insurance.
“I’ve been trying to get insurance for the longest but had no success,” Lewis said.
The tumor has her family very concerned.

Homeland Security chief says ‘fresh start’ needed for deportation program
Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson said Thursday that a “fresh start” is needed for the controversial deportation program known as Secure Communities, offering another indication this week that the Obama administration will soon revise its immigration-enforcement priorities.
Johnson discussed his thoughts on the matter during an interview with PBS’s “NewsHour,” saying the program needs to be revised but not scrapped.
Earlier this week, the secretary told police chiefs at a White House meeting that the Obama administration is likely to overhaul Secure Communities, which pairs local law-enforcement agencies with federal authorities to identify undocumented immigrants for removal.

It’s raining here in Maryland. Beautiful and quiet. I love the weather most people shun. Rain; Thunder Storms with vicious lightning; Hurricanes; Blizzards; all that stuff. I even found a woman who likes it too. Crazy huh?
Have a great day and let’s keep calling a club a club huh? LOL
Hi AMS. Always a pleasure to see a fellow Marylander grace our place.
Yep More for ME & NONE for thee.
The Shonda Rhimes Takeover Continues on ABC This Fall
May 13, 2014 | Luvvie
At the Essence Black Women in Hollywood Luncheon in 2012, the president of ABC (Anne Sweeney) presented Shonda Rhimes with an award. Before she did, she said “We usually give people a seat at the table. We gave Shonda the table.” WELL DAMB! It seems she wasn’t playing one bit because ABC just announced their Fall 2014 lineup and Shonda basically owns Thursday night, which is a huge night in TV.
PLUS, according to IndieWire (and everyone else) they just signed her to an 8-figure deal through 2018. YESSSS FOR THIS SHONDA TAKEOVER! Look at my auntie outchea prospering (Kerry’s my cousin and Shonda’s my aunty. Don’t argue with me).
Besides the fact that she’s an amazing storyteller, what I love about Shonda Rhimes as a showrunner is that she breaks up the monochrome of TV’s primetime casts. There’s people of color in her shows! Yes, it’s incredibly sad that in 2014 we still need to fist pump when we see non-white people on nighttime TV. But Shonda is doing her part because it’s not a matter of TRYING to include diversity. It’s just trying to make her shows reflect real life and that simple fact makes her shows better. LEARN FROM HER, OTHER TV EXECUTIVES!
Anyway, Thursday nights this fall on ABC have three Shonda Rhimes shows back-to-back-to-back. Our inability to deal (Scandal) has been moved up by an hour and there’s a new show in Shondaland. The times are in Eastern Time.
I’m totally here for How to Get Away with Murder, which stars the brilliant Viola Davis as a law professor and practicing lawyer. The first look is below and it looks good!

YOU GO MS. VIOLA DAVIS! Shonda knocked last night’s Grey’s Anatomy finale too.
I’m making $21 an hour at McDonald’s. Why aren’t you?
By Louise Marie Rantzau

I work for McDonald’s and I make $21 an hour.
No, that isn’t a typo. It’s really my salary.
You see, I work for McDonald’s in Denmark, where an agreement between our union and the company guarantees that workers older than 18 are paid at least $21 an hour. Employees younger than 18 make at least $15 — meaning teenagers working at McDonald’s in Denmark make more than two times what many adults in America earn working at the Golden Arches.
To anyone who says that fast-food jobs can’t be good jobs, I would answer that mine isn’t bad. In fact, parts of it are just fine. Under our union’s agreement with McDonald’s, for example, I receive paid sick leave that workers are still fighting for in many parts of the world. We also get overtime pay, guaranteed hours and at least two days off a week, unlike workers in most countries. At least 10 percent of the staff in any given restaurant must work at least 30 hours a week
But in New York last week, I met fast-food workers from around the world who aren’t as lucky as I am. We marched through Midtown Manhattan demanding a fair wage and respect at the workplace.
Many of the U.S. workers I met make less than $9 an hour. And unlike in Denmark, where most fast-food workers are young people looking to make extra money while in school, the vast majority of U.S. fast-food workers are adults trying to support their families. Roughly 70 percent are in their 20s or older, according to a recent study, and more than a quarter are raising kids.
