Oh brother where art thou 7Everett and Delmar arrive in Everett’s home town only to find that Everett’s wife, Penny (Holly Hunter), is engaged to Vernon T. Waldrip (Ray McKinnon), campaign manager for gubernatorial candidate Homer Stokes (Wayne Duvall). She refuses to take Everett back and is so ashamed of him that she has been telling their daughters he was killed by a train.

While watching a film in a cinema, Everett and Delmar discover that Pete is still alive. The sirens had turned him in to collect the bounty on his head. After Everett and Delmar rescue him from jail, Pete tells them that he revealed the location of the treasure. Everett admits that he only was in prison for practicing law without a license and that there was never any armored car robbery, nor treasure. He only mentioned it to persuade the other men (who were chained to him) to escape so he could reconcile with his wife, who wrote to him, telling him she would be getting remarried. Pete is outraged at this news, primarily because he only had two weeks left on his original sentence and must now serve an additional 50 years for his escape.

The trio stumbles upon a Ku Klux Klan rally, in which the Imperial Wizard sings “O Death,” and discovers that Tommy has been captured and is about to be lynched. The three disguise themselves as the color guard and attempt a rescue, but Big Dan, a Grand Cyclops in the Klan, reveals their identities and chaos ensues, in which the Imperial Wizard is revealed to be Stokes. The trio flees the scene, with Everett cutting the wires supporting a large burning cross, which falls on and incinerates some of the Klansmen (including Big Dan).

Everett convinces Pete, Delmar, and Tommy to help him win his wife back. Disguised as musicians, they sneak into a Stokes campaign dinner she is attending. Everett tries to convince his wife he is “bona fide,” but she brushes him off. The group begins an impromptu musical performance beginning with “In the Jailhouse Now” followed by “Man of Constant Sorrow,” during which the crowd recognizes them as the Soggy Bottom Boys and goes wild. Stokes, on the other hand, recognizes them as the group who disgraced his lynch mob and shouts for the music to stop, angering the crowd. He denounces the Soggy Bottom Boys as hostile to the social order, but the crowd is unimpressed and runs him out of town on a rail. Pappy O’Daniel (Charles Durning), the sitting governor, seizes the opportunity. He gets on stage, dances, and endorses the Soggy Bottom Boys, granting them a full pardon; he then has them join in singing “You Are My Sunshine” while the event is played on the radio. Penny accepts Everett back, but demands that he find her original ring if they are to be married. As they leave the dinner, they run into a mob taking to jail a jubilant George, who happily claims he will be electrocuted. Delmar comments, “Looks like George is right back on top again.”

The four men set out to retrieve the ring, which is at a cabin in the valley where Everett originally claimed to have hidden the treasure. When they arrive, Cooley and his men arrest them and prepare to hang them. Everett protests, stating they had been pardoned on the radio, but Sheriff Cooley ignores their pleas, responding that where he comes from, “[they] don’t have a radio.” The three start to despair while Everett improvises a prayer to be saved. Suddenly, the valley is flooded and they are saved from hanging while Sheriff Cooley, his dogs, and his men drown during the flood. Using one of their coffins as a raft, Pete and Delmar jubilantly praise God, while Everett dismisses the incident as luck. He pipes down though, as a cow floats by on top of a submerged cotton house. Tommy finds the ring in a desk on which he is floating, and they return to town.

95% of Minnesotans now have health insurance
Article by: JACKIE CROSBY , Star Tribune
    Updated: June 11, 2014 – 11:40 PM

Percentage without health plan is 2nd-lowest in U.S.

The percentage of uninsured Minnesotans has dropped to the lowest level in state history, and the second-lowest level in the nation, following the end of enrollments under the Affordable Care Act.

About 180,500 Minnesotans gained health insurance from last September to this May, with the vast majority getting coverage through one of the state’s public health programs, a report from the University of Minnesota found.

That left just 4.9 percent of all Minnesotans lacking health coverage on May 1, about a month after the federal health law’s first major sign-up deadline. That’s down from 8.9 percent last Sept. 30.

“A change in the uninsurance rate like this is pretty much unprecedented in Minnesota,” said Julie Sonier of the university’s State Health Access Data Assistance Center and a co-author of the report.

Michael Jackson’s kids get $8M a year allowance

    By Stacy Brown

On a hot, lazy Las Vegas day, Michael Jackson’s eyes were glued to a catalog as he shopped from his hotel room for mundane but expensive trinkets such as Rolex watches, Barbie dolls and artwork.

The 2002 shopping spree continued until Jacko exhausted his line of credit with the hotel. Frustrated, he reached in a duffel bag and handed his 4- and 3-year-old kids a stack of bills totaling $20,000 and ordered their nanny to “take them out and buy them whatever they wanted.”

“He said, ‘Go out and entertain yourselves,’ ” recalled former pal Marc Schaffel, who’s poised to marry the late singer’s ex-wife Debbie Rowe later this year.

Today, five years after Jacko’s death, the spending spree continues, with his three kids — now 17, 16 and 12 — enjoying a whopping $8 million allowance a year.

And that money — up from the $5 million stipend they used to split, thanks to the estate’s growing earnings — is separate from the $1 million-plus (up from $700,000) grandmother Katherine receives to watch over Prince, Paris and Blanket.

Among the expenses: Prince’s $30,000 yearly tuition at a private school and the six-figure yearly payout to house, educate and treat Paris at a therapeutic boarding school in Utah following her 2013 suicide attempt.

Prince, who’s already shown himself a ladies man, has showered more than $50,000 in custom-made jewelry and other gifts on at least three different girlfriends, a family insider said. That’s $10,000 more than he plunked down for a new Ford pickup truck.

Three vacations a year to destinations including Hawaii and Vegas annually set the kids back about $350,000 — after payments for bodyguards, relatives tagging along, chauffeurs, first-class airfare and plenty of luxuries.

In Hawaii, the family usually surfs the secluded beach and roams the Kahala Hotel & Resort in Honolulu. They relax in the $5,500-per-night Signature Suite.

17 Of The Most Beautiful Steps Around The World

Street art is gradually coming to be accepted as a legitimate and wonderful art form by more and more people, but that doesn’t mean that street artists can rest on their laurels – they continue exploring with new ways to exploit public surfaces and cover them in beautiful art. This post is all about street artists and regular people who have decorated something that most of us probably wouldn’t think of decorating – public outdoor steps.

Much like the hidden street art of Zebrating, most of these pieces can only truly be appreciated when viewed from a certain vantage point. They may seem like random splashes of paint to someone actually climbing those steps, but someone looking at them from below will see the artist’s full vision. If they’re long enough, someone ascending the steps will see the image and see how it stretches and twists as they approach it. Of course, not all of them have to form images – some are simply colorful decorations that make the neighbourhood a more uplifting place.

Quite a few of these pieces were born out of community efforts, which also shows a growing worldwide acceptance of street art. When the Rainbow steps in Turkey were first painted over by the local government, nearby communities responded by painting their own steps as well in solidarity. The mosaic steps in San Francisco were created by more than 300 local people under the careful guidance of a couple of artists.

2014 Dirty Dozen and Clean Fifteen produce lists
EWG recently released updated information about the cleanest produce — and on the reverse — the produce most heavily sprayed with pesticides.
    Sat, Jun 14, 2014 at 09:53 AM

We know that cutting down on pesticide exposure is important for all of us, but especially for children and pregnant or nursing mothers. Buying organic produce is one way to cut down on exposure, but not everyone can afford that.

With that in mind, the Environmental Working Group (EWG) releases yearly updates on the cleanest produce (clean fifteen), and the highest sprayed produce (dirty dozen). By sticking to the clean fifteen when buying conventional produce you can substantially lower the amount of pesticides you consume through foods. I love that!

In their new findings, the group found that 65 percent of the thousands of pounds of produce they tested had some pesticide residue. They also found that every imported nectarine they tested, and 99 percent of apple samples had at least one pesticide residue. The average potato contains more pesticides by weight than any other food, and a single grape had residue from 15 pesticides.

Let’s start with the good news with the produce that was the most likely to be found without any pesticide residue.

    Clean Fifteen:

    Avocados
    Sweet corn
    Pineapples
    Cabbage
    Frozen sweet peas
    Onions
    Asparagus
    Mangoes
    Papayas
    Kiwis
    Eggplant
    Grapefruit
    Cantaloupe
    Cauliflower
    Sweet potatoes

‘All I could do was hug him’: Grad, 18, reunites with firefighter who saved her as a baby

Last Sunday was a landmark occasion for 18-year-old Skyler James, and not just because she celebrated graduating from high school.

For the first time, she also got to meet the firefighter who, on a bitterly cold November morning in 1995, found her — a newborn baby — abandoned beneath a snow-laden pine tree in an Illinois cemetery.

“It’s so amazing to be able to know the person who saved my life,” Skyler told TODAY.com. “Without him I probably wouldn’t be here right now.”

Bonnie and Greg James of Charleston, Ill., adopted Skyler five days after firefighter Charlie Heflin discovered her under that tree. The couple told Skyler the story of how she joined their family as soon as she was old enough to understand. When Skyler was 5, Bonnie James began searching for Heflin in the phone books of nearby communities, but without any luck.

Lies About Black Fatherhood That People Should Stop Believing
    06/13/2014 brainuser1

When it comes to the topic of black fathers, and you actually have something ‘good’ to say, people may respond, “Excuse me?” or even, “Come again?”

Why, you may ask, do we do this?

Because for so long, conversations heard around the topic have only been, “they are nowhere to be found.” In fact, a number of studies and reports claim that black fathers are overwhelmingly absent from the home.

While the conversations about absent fathers should be taken very seriously, it should not overshadow, nor ignore, the fact that there are many, many fathers out there who are taking care of their daddy duties just fine, thank you.

With Father’s Day coming up, we list some key points outlined in a Huffington Post article that shows 5 things we should stop believing about black fathers.

Impacts from proof-of-citizenship voting case extend beyond Kansas, Arizona borders

    By ROXANA HEGEMAN Associated Press
    June 14, 2014 – 1:47 pm EDT

WICHITA, Kansas — House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi and other top lawmakers have urged a federal appeals court to overturn a decision by a judge in Kansas that they say would limit the authority of Congress to regulate federal elections and derail its ability to pass legislation protecting the right to vote.

Their friend-of-the-court filing last week at the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals comes in the lawsuit filed by Kansas and Arizona to force federal elections officials to help those states impose their proof-of-citizenship requirements on federal voter registration forms used by residents of the states.

Both states argue the requirements prevent voter fraud by thwarting voting by noncitizens. Critics of such laws view them as suppressing voter turnout. But both sides agree the potential impacts of the case could extend to other states.

“This case has great significance nationally,” Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach said Thursday. “Many states are watching whether Kansas and Arizona will prevail in our efforts to require proof of citizenship when people register.”

The states contend the availability of a federal form — which requires only that people attest under penalty of perjury that they are citizens — creates a “massive loophole” in enforcing their voter proof-of-citizenship laws and maintaining the integrity of their elections.

Pelosi and seven other Democratic lawmakers argued in their June 3 court filing that the lower court’s ruling, if left standing, could derail Congress’ efforts to identify and remove unnecessary barriers to voting in federal elections. The lawmakers also contend the ruling calls into question the Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act and the National Voter Registration Act of 1993.

“For much of our nation’s history, state law was used to diminish or deny qualified citizens the right to vote,” the lawmakers wrote. “The Constitution was amended to correct this wrong and empower Congress to take appropriate steps to ensure that history does not repeat itself.”
