President Obama Making Chicago Visit To Support Quinn
October 19, 2014 4:40 PM
CHICAGO (CBS/AP) — President Obama will be back in Chicago Sunday for the second time this month in an attempt to give a boost to Governor Pat Quinn’s re-election campaign.
WBBM’s Nancy Harty reports the event Sunday evening at Chicago State University is billed as an early voting rally, which begins on Monday.
The president was last here two and a half weeks ago when he attended a fundraiser for Gov. Quinn which netted the Democratic governor $1 million. This second trip demonstrates just how close the race is between Quinn and Republican Bruce Rauner.
First lady Michelle Obama also headlined a rally for him, and she also recorded a campaign ad saying she and the president planned to vote for their fellow Chicago Democrat.
Former President Bill Clinton is scheduled to campaign with Quinn Tuesday in Chicago, where Clinton will speak at a manufacturing plant about what the Quinn campaign describes as Illinois’ economic “comeback.” They note unemployment is at a six-year low; Rauner counters Illinois still has one of the highest jobless rates in the Midwest.

With Voter ID On Hold, Here’s What Wisconsin Republicans Have Planned For Election Day
by Alice Ollstein
Posted on October 19, 2014 at 12:09 pm
MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN—Less than one week after the Supreme Court delayed the implementation of Wisconsin’s voter ID law until after the midterm elections, a GOP official urged Republican activists to take matters into their own hands to prevent voter fraud.
Milwaukee County’s Republican Elections Commissioner Rick Baas warned a crowd of volunteers and supporters Friday night to be “concerned about voter fraud,” and urged the hundreds of attendees to take an “extra step of vigilance.” “You as a Wisconsin resident can challenge people who are not supposed to be voting,” he said at the Milwaukee County Republicans event. “You’ve got to do that.”
Under state law, voters, election workers, official observers, or any member of the public can challenge the validity of someone’s vote, but to do so, they must swear under oath that they have firsthand knowledge that the person is not qualified to vote. A challenge cannot be based on a mere suspicion or hunch.
“Providing those parameters would be important to any discussion related to voter challenges,” Milwaukee City Election Commission Director Neil Albrecht told ThinkProgress. “Failure to provide has the potential to incite unsubstantiated challenges and a disruption to voting.”
Others echoed this concern that Baas’ invocation for “challenging” at the polls would hurt legitimate voters. “There’s a fine line by legitimate questions and harassment and intimidation,” said Darryl Morin, the Midwest vice president of the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC). Morin told ThinkProgress that as a Republican it is “disappointing” to see such rhetoric coming from “a party that claims to be reaching out to minorities.”
Gov. Scott Walker (R-WI) signed a law earlier this year allowing poll observers to be as close as three feet to a voter. Democratic lawmakers and progressive organizers have expressed concern that the measure could lead to greater harassment and intimidation and Morin said that some of LULAC’s Wisconsin members have already experienced such treatment when going to cast a ballot.
“We completely agree that the vote is a very precious thing, but to put barriers before people who are eligible to vote just should not be allowed. When you look at the law that was passed in Wisconsin and the people who were impacted—the majority of them Hispanics or African Americans—it’s hard to believe that it happened just by chance,” Morin added.
LULAC, which has been involved in voting rights struggles since the days of the poll tax, has been battling Wisconsin’s voter ID law for the past few years on behalf of its Latino members who would be disenfranchised by the measure. Morin said he’s frustrated by politicians who feed “the false impression that if you have a dark tint to your skin, you’re obviously illegal and a criminal and you’re dealing drugs.”
Commissioner Baas was one of many officials at the Milwaukee County Republican Party event to lament the recent Supreme Court ruling putting Wisconsin’s voter ID law on hold for this November’s election.
Republican Dan Sebring, who is running for the fourth time against Gwen Moore (D-WI) for her seat in the House of Representatives, said that the ruling “stinks,” while the Republican candidate for Attorney General, Brad Schimel, called it “bad news”—prompting the whole crowd to boo the high court. He then counseled them: “The best way you can prevent someone from stealing your vote is if you use your vote. Make sure no one can go in and take your line in the ballot box.”

Brown on a deliberate march toward goal years in the making
Democrat Anthony G. Brown can readily list the criticisms of his public persona, but he finds the characterization a bit perplexing.
Stiff, stuffy, stilted.
“I’m always amazed how people say, ‘Well, he seems so scripted.'” Brown said. “As if I wake up intending to be scripted.”
“I’m just a deliberate person,” he says.
Brown has been running to replace Gov. Martin O’Malley since the pair won re-election four years ago, counting off each week in a tally that is over 200 now. A lawyer with a high-powered resume — Army colonel, Harvard Law School, Iraq veteran — Brown has been the Democratic Party establishment’s pick for months. National Democrats have invested more than $1 million in his historic bid to become Maryland’s first African-American governor.
What’s not according to script: Brown’s in a race that’s much closer than expected.
Critics say he’s been too cautious to lay out a clear, engaging plan for what he will do in Maryland, and that posting policy proposals on a website isn’t the same as connecting with voters. Supporters say Brown’s carefully controlled campaign reflects the personality of a man shaped by the military and intensely focused on reaching his goals.
Brown is deliberate with his words — what he says and what he doesn’t — and with his plans, his time, his actions. But that doesn’t make him stiff, he said.
“You actually could sit down with me and have a beer, and it might be an enjoyable conversation,” said Brown, 52.
He was born into a biracial immigrant family in the Long Island town of Huntington, N.Y. Brown and his fraternal twin, Andrew, were the youngest of five children of a Jamaican physician and Swiss homemaker.

No, not yet. Schools were closed in Belton ISD for 2 or 3 days b/c 2 students were on the plane with the nurse who had contracted Ebola.

Black Or Bleak For Dems In November
Posted by Zandar
An internal election 2014 memo from Democratic pollster Cornell Belcher to the White House is both blunt and dismaying, and as NY Times political reporter Sheryl Gay Stolberg details, the message is clear: black voters will make or break the Dems in 2014.
On one hand the fact that Senate Dems have stabbed President Obama in the back time and time again, on Gitmo, on his Surgeon General appointee, on gun control, and in commercials where white Democrats do everything they can to slag a black President is going a long way towards turning off black voters.
On the other hand, the cynic in me is hearing alarm bells. Guess who will be blamed should Democrats lose in November? Hint, it won’t be the Senate Dems who trashed Obama.
…………………
There are those alarm bells again. Note the memo blames black voters for Democratic losses in 2010. How come the onus for voting falls only on black voters now?
If Dems win, that’ll be great. But if black turnout is so vital to the Democrats, why aren’t we seeing more efforts to stop obvious black voter suppression through GOP voter ID laws?
And if Dems lose, well, guess whose fault it’s going to be?
