Shocking Study: A Majority of Middle-Class Black Children Will Grow Up to Be Poorer Than Their Parents
October 23, 2014 | Posted by Nick Chiles

An unsettling majority of Black children born into middle-class families will drop down into a poorer income bracket as adults, according to a devastating new study by researchers for the Brookings Institution.

In a study conducted for the Boston Federal Reserve, researchers Richard V. Reeves and Isabel V. Sawhill confirmed what many African-Americans have long known: In America, your chances of escaping childhood poverty and moving into a higher income bracket are dramatically higher if you were born white than if you were born Black.

While about 16 percent of white children born into the poorest one-fifth of U.S. families will rise to become a member of the top one-fifth by the time they turn 40 years old, just 3 percent of Black children will make it to the top, the researchers found.

“Half the black children born into the bottom quintile remain there in adulthood, compared
to just one in four whites,” they write. “Only 3 percent join the top income quintile, implying that a real-life ‘rags to riches’ story is unlikely for black children.”

But perhaps the most devastating finding in the report concerns middle-class Black children. Of Black children born to parents in the middle income group, only 14 percent will move up into higher income brackets as adults, while 37 percent will remain in the middle class and an almost unbelievable 69 percent will move downward and be poorer than their parents.

The equivalent breakdown in the white community is 44 percent will move up, 23 percent will remain middle class and 34 percent will drop down into poorer groups.

(The numbers don’t add up to 100 percent because, since there are five income groups, it’s possible to be poorer than your parents but still be considered middle class.)

The study is a breath-taking chronicling of the effects of systemic racism and white privilege in the U.S., a subject that has gotten national exposure in recent days after conservative commentator Bill O’Reilly’s claim that it no longer exists.

Md. Teen Viciously Attacked on the Way to Look for Work

A West Baltimore, Md., girl gang allegedly beat and robbed the girl just blocks away from the mall, where she planned to submit an application.

A West Baltimore, Md., group of girls allegedly beat and robbed a teenaged girl just blocks away from a local mall, where she planned to submit a job application.

The victim’s mother, who didn’t want to be identified, told WJZ in Baltimore that the group that attacked her daughter is part of the “Sisterhood” gang.

“They punched her, they kicked her and mostly they stomped her in the head,” the mother told the news station. “I just think something really needs to be done about these gangs because every time we turn the TV on, it’s another gang after somebody else’s child.”

West Baltimore, Md., police say the 17-year-old girl was viciously beaten and robbed on a street corner Tuesday afternoon as she was on her way to a job interview, reports WJZ 13, a CBS affiliate.

Five girls, whose names were not released, have been arrested in the attack, which was captured on video, just blocks from Mondawmin Mall. The unidentified teen, whose phone, coat and money were stolen in the attack, suffered swelling to her face and was hospitalized overnight, the report says.

It is unclear what sparked the attack, but a school police officer at Frederick Douglass High School on Tuesday witnessed a group of girls trying to pick fights near the school, according to a police report obtained by WJZ. The officer followed the group to ensure that they kept moving. But they jumped the victim at an intersection, while someone recorded a video.

Not too surprised about Louisville, which I consider an enclave from the political barbarism of the rest of the state. Of course my homeclown rag, the Cincinnati Enquirer, endorsed (shock!) McConnell. But this could be a positive. The Enquirer also endorsed McCain and Romney and we know how those elections turned out, right? Heh.

  5. Haley spent this weekend with her best friend Megan (Megan is white). They had a blast. They went out to eat at a restaurant where they had karaoke night and Haley sang, they watched movies, played games and had a barbeque cookout the next day. Megan cried when Haley left. :'( Megan’s daddy sure was trying to work things out with Jonne’ so Haley could stay longer but they had to go to church this morning.

Megan was at Jay’s birthday party at the skating rink on the 17th and she was sad when it was time for her to go home. Awww..nothing like good friends. God bless them!

The Republican Party’s electoral philosophy: Cheating wins

The explosion and enforcement of restrictive voter ID laws make this one thing very clear

    Sean McElwee

Last week, the Supreme Court upheld a law that could disenfranchise 600,000 Texans. But the effects of the law won’t fall equally: African-Americans and Latinos are 305 percent and 195 percent less likely (respectively) to have the necessary forms of identification than whites. The Republican party is increasingly unpopular, and relies almost exclusively on white voters. The charts below show the 2008 if only white men voted and if only people of color voted (source).

Since 2008, people of color become a growing share of the voting population while the GOP has, if anything, moved further to the right. It has further alienated voters of color with racist attacks and laws. But as they say: if you can’t beat ‘em, make sure they don’t vote. Over the last four years the Republicans have gone through elaborate attempts to make sure populations that don’t support them don’t get a chance to vote.

Since 2006, Republicans have pushed through voter ID laws in 34 states. Such laws did not exist before 2006, when Indiana passed the first voter ID law. The laws were ostensibly aimed at preventing voter fraud, but a News21 investigation finds only 2,068 instance of alleged fraud since 2000 (that is out of over 146 million voters). They estimate that there is one accusation of voter fraud for every 15 million voters. As Mother Jones notes, instances of voter fraud are more rare than UFO sightings. There have been only 13 instances of in-person voter fraud (the sorts that a voter ID law would reduce), while 47,000 people claim to have seen a UFO

On the other hand, research by the Brennan Center for Justice finds that, “as many as 11 percent of eligible voters do not have government-issued photo ID.” Those who do not have ID are most likely to be “ seniors, people of color, people with disabilities, low-income voters, and students” — i.e.. people who vote Democratic (chart source).
