Alison lost big. Nate Silver gave Mitch a 98% probability of winning so this one turned out as expected. The Democrats need better candidates, but I have no idea where they will come from.
How is Anthony Brown not winning this with clear margins. Why is Ed Gillespie even still in contention.

The rest of us have to watch what was left of our democracy fade away while elections are bought by billionaires, Democratic voters are disenfranchised, and people who answer to evil men occupy our Congress. Media goes along for the ride because they make so much money on elections.
Yet somehow these same people will turn around and buy into the lies to blame President Obama. They vote against their own best interests and then blame the man who repeatedly warned them not to go with the republicans.

The big money behind the elections Tuesday comes from a host of familiar billionaires.
Republican industrialists Charles and David Koch are as powerful as ever. Tom Steyer, the hedge fund manager-turned- environmentalist, has been highly public about his climate-change crusade. Former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg is again in the mix focusing on gun laws, education and gay marriage. Mega midterm donors also include ultra-wealthy investors Paul Singer and George Soros and their respective conservative and liberal causes.
But there’s one name on the top 10 list most people won’t recognize: Robert Mercer.
Better known as “Bob,” Mercer is co-head of Renaissance Technologies, a secretive hedge fund firm that manages $25 billion using fast-trading computer programs from its headquarters in a quiet hamlet on Long Island.
Thanks both to looser campaign finance rules and his promotion to help lead one of the largest hedge funds in the world, Mercer has quietly become a major player in politics since 2010. With more than $8 million donated this election election cycle alone, he’s the second-largest Republican donor to outside spending groups since the 2012, behind only Singer, and fourth overall after Steyer and Bloomberg.
Recent donations include a $2.5 million check to Kochs’ Freedom Partners Action Fund—more than the Koch bothers themselves have given—a “super” political action committee that has spent $24 million to support Republicans like Senate hopefuls Joni Ernst in Iowa and Cory Gardner in Colorado. Super PACs were made possible by the Supreme Court’s 2010 decision in Citizens United, which allows them to accept unlimited contributions from corporations and individuals as long as they don’t coordinate directly with a campaign.

Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp’s office failed to process tens of thousands of voter registration cards – mostly in heavily African-American counties – before the election, and it’s causing confusion at the polls. Karl Ragland and his wife moved to Atlanta from elsewhere in the state earlier in the year and submitted a change of address form to the Board of Elections. But when they showed up at their new polling place in Atlanta, they learned that the form had never been processed. Karl has to drive 35 miles to Covington to vote, causing him to miss up to two hours of work.
“I am going to vote today,” Karl said.

Here in MN, there were at least 20 incumbents on the ballot unchallenged. We have the option of writing in names, which is a joke, because the names aren’t valid and it’s the same as voting for the only name on the ballot, unless a majority of voters decide not to vote for the incumbent and write in the same name. Except for Senator, Governor, and Attorney generals, the rest of these folks go unchallenged.

Mother accused of throwing son, 6, off Yaquina Bay Bridge
NEWPORT, Ore. — A Lincoln County woman was jailed for murder after she reportedly threw her six-year-old son off the Yaquina Bay Bridge in Newport Monday night.
Authorities said 34-year-old Jillian McCabe called 911 at 6:25 p.m. to report what she did. She told police that she heard voices in her head telling her to throw the boy off the bridge.

Before we get to talking about the Senate, I want you to consider the following possibility. Imagine that tomorrow night the following incumbent Republican governors will lose their bids for reelection:
1. Paul LePage of Maine
2. Tom Corbett of Pennsylvania
3. Rick Snyder of Michigan
4. Scott Walker of Wisconsin
5. Sam Brownback of Kansas
6. Rick Scott of Florida.
7. Sean Parnell of Alaska
I don’t think this far-fetched in the least, and on a good night Governor Nathan Deal of Georgia might lose, too.
Now, don’t get me wrong. There are Democrats running for governor who might lose tomorrow, too, including in deep blue Connecticut and Massachusetts. But before we start talking about an epic beat down for the Democratic Party, we should keep these governors’ races in mind. A governor has a lot more power than any individual senator. And losing control of big states like Florida, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin and (perhaps) Georgia would be a very big deal.
So, keep your eyes on these races because the Republicans are at risk of suffering a significant bloodbath tomorrow even if things go as expected in the Senate races.

After more than a week of protests, arrests, and clashes with police following the police shooting of Michael Brown, the FAA renewed a flight ban over Ferguson, Missouri. Rachel Maddow pointed out how the no-fly zone inhibited the media’s ability to cover the story and thereby hurt the American public’s ability to understand the situation on the ground.
From the August 19 Rachel Maddow Show:
Rachel Maddow: And it was hard to know for sure, but that’s a really important part of the story, that we honestly cannot witness from the perspectives that we are allowed and we thereby cannot communicate to you at home trying to be an educated news consumer about this story. We cannot communicate an important part of what police are doing on the streets of this town. We can see what’s directly in front of our ground level vantage points, but it has been impossible to tell how scenes like this related to, say, the streets nearby.
That kind of perspective is why news organizations use helicopters in the first place. Without a view from high up, in a circumstance like this, it is hard to get beyond the running moment-to-moment experiential level.
And frankly, that is not enough to accurately and objectively report on the rationality and reasonableness and the effectiveness of police tactics and protesters’ tactics. It’s hard to tell what’s happening when you can only see it from five feet off the ground.
And part of the reason we cannot tell what’s happening from a better vantage point is that the media just literally cannot show it. Physically, the media is not being allowed to show what we need to be able to show in order to characterize this in a way that is objective and makes the most sense.
