KingsmenThe Kingsmen are a 1960s beat/garage rock band from Portland, Oregon, United States. They are best known for their 1963 recording of Richard Berry‘s “Louie Louie“, which held the No. 2 spot on the Billboard charts for six weeks. The single has become an enduring classic.

In 1959, Lynn Easton invited Jack Ely to play with him at a Portland Hotel gig, with Ely singing and playing guitar and Easton on the drum kit.[2] The two teenagers grew up together, as their parents were close friends.[2] Easton and Ely performed at yacht club parties, and soon added Mike Mitchell on guitar and Bob Nordby on bass to round out the band. They called themselves The Kingsmen, taking the name from a recently disbanded group.[3] The Kingsmen began their collective career playing at fashion shows, Red Cross events, and supermarket promotions, generally avoiding rock songs on their setlist.

Detroit’s young gentrifiers face a daunting task in buying $500 homes: evicting poor residents

Oren Goldenberg, a 31-year-old filmmaker based in Detroit, could have bought a $500 house at the Wayne County tax auction this fall– but having to evict a homeowner turned him off.

Goldenberg had been burned before. He had made a previous purchase in the yearly tax foreclosure auction. His coup turned less appealing as he was confronted with the reality of removing the owner and then-occupant from her home. Goldenberg sold the house back to its occupant for the bargain price of $7,000 – twice what he had paid for it, but half what she had owed in property taxes.

Now Goldenberg won’t consider an already-occupied house. “It goes into this long-term narrative of Detroit is vacant and empty and there’s no one here. So when you look at it and you think oh my god, we’re going to develop this area, no one thinks that you might be pushing people out.”

…This coming year, 62,000 Detroit properties will be heading to the tax foreclosure auction if their owners fail to come up with money before April 1. The catch? Over half of these properties have someone living them — usually the previous owner, who paid off the mortgage and whose family may have lived in the house for years.

The result: Young, predominantly white, college educated professionals and creatives may be moving into Detroit lured by tax breaks and incentives, participating in its “renewal” – but tens of thousands of mainly black Detroiters, struggling with bills, are simultaneously – and silently – being shown out the back door.

It’s a dynamic affecting a significant portion of Detroit’s small, poor population. This fall, the Wayne County treasurer is handing out tax foreclosure notices to 62,000 Detroit properties at least three years behind on paying their property taxes. All told, that’s over $709m in overdue taxes and penalties — a heavy burden for a city in which 38% of residents are living below the poverty line.

Of those properties, 37,000 are classified as occupied. With an average of 2.74 people per household, this means around 100,000 Detroiters are at risk of losing the current roof over their head. That is 1 in 7 Detroit residents, this coming season alone.

The end is predictable – and swift. If owners fail to work out payment plans or pay their entire tax burden within five months, their homes end up at auctions. The first one comes in September where properties are sold at a starting bid of the total amount of taxes and liens owed. The houses no one buys end up in the second round at a starting bid of $500….

Tavis Smiley and Cornel West Ducked The Walmart Demonstrations . . . AGAIN!!!
Beneath the Spin * Eric L. Wattree

As we speak I bet Wal-Mart is shakin’ in their boots, because Tavis (Poverty Tour) Smiley, and Cornel (“I come to go to jail!”) West is on their way to read Wal-Mart the RIOT ACT this year!!!
    *
What? They didn’t show!!!? AGAIN!!!? For the THIRD year in a row, and they didn’t even send a postcard of support!!!?
    *
WELL, I GUESS THAT JUST ABOUT SAYS IT ALL ABOUT THOSE TWO.

It’s like my mother used to say – “Pay no attention to what people SAY, just watch what they DO.”
    *
THOSE TWO BEING SPONSORED BY WAL-MART IS LIKE MARTIN LUTHER KING BEING SPONSORED BY THE KLAN.
    _________________________________________________________

    …………………………

A MESSAGE TO TAVIS SMILEY, CORNEL WEST AND THE VARIOUS OTHER ‘WILLIE LYNCHERS’
    .
Black People Don’t Resent Criticism of Obama, But We do Resent Slander – Which is What These People Engage In, To The Direct Benefit of the GOP, The Biggest Enemy In The World To the Poor and Minority Community
    .

Cornel West spews more racist rhetoric than any Republican in America. The reason for that is he’s essentially an entertainer who specializes in shock and race-baiting as his one and only routine. Clear evidence of that is he’s over the top in everything that defines him – he’s over the top in his personal image, in his overly gesticulative presentation, and his rhetoric is invariably inflammatory. Everything about him is a contrivance that’s specifically designed to bring attention to himself. The actual issues are meaningless to him. They’re nothing more than a platform to launch his performance. In short, Cornel West is the Liberace of faux intellectualism.
    .
Have you ever noticed that nearly every public pronouncement that spews from the mouth of Cornel West is literally dripping with racial innuendo? One of his latest racist slanders is that MSNBC is the ‘Rent a Negro’ network. West has said at various times the following:
    .
1). President Obama is “a war criminal.”
2). President Obama is “a black mascot of Wall Street oligarchs . . .”
3). President Obama is “a black puppet of corporate plutocrats.”
4). President Obama is “a Rockefeller Republican in Blackface.”
5). President Obama “has a certain rootlessness, a deracination.”
6). President Obama Is “Afraid Of Free Black Men.”
7). President Obama is “a global George Zimmerman.”
    8). Dr. Harris-Perry is “a fake and a fraud”
9). Dr. Michael Eric Dyson “is a sellout.”
10). Al Sharpton “is a sellout.”
11). MSNBC is the “Rent a Negro Network.”
    .
Yet, when comedian Steve Harvey called him an Uncle Tom, he said, “When you are trying to talk about issues that affect the people, name calling gets in the way. Name-calling is nothing but another weapon of mass distraction.”
    .
So name-calling is only objectionable when it’s directed at him. Such unmitigated hypocrisy is mind boggling – but for once, he’s right. Not one of the above assertions is a disciplined, constructive, or scholarly assessment of the facts. On the contrary, they’re the reckless and intellectually undisciplined rants of a bitter, self-serving, and severely discredited academic fraud.
    .
For Cornel West, there’s something ‘racially defective’ about every Black person who has the audacity to preempt Cornel West from the limelight. West has a propensity for trying to denigrate the character of people whose been in the trenches for years, while West, himself, has done absolutely nothing beyond running his mouth. In order to gain clear evidence of that fact one simply has to ask oneself, what efforts have West made to try to improve the plight of the Black community?

See how the Cleveland newspaper decided to spin Tamir’s murder by digging up dirt on his father? Media is always so quick to smear Black folks to assuage the guilt white folks would be justified in feeling, never allowing them to attain “racial maturity” and accept responsibility for the evil done in their name and for their benefit. Their feeling of innocence must be maintained at all costs. Media has long played this role in this country. How else can a nation so loudly proclaim its superiority and “goodness” while simultaneously enslaving a people for centuries and later setting up an apartheid state? This façade of American exceptionalism has always been a sham. Black people have to demonized and rendered “less than human” in order to prevent a schizophrenic break down of the White psyche. Black folks must always be seen to have DESERVED the shitty treatment they have received in this country since its inception, or else this country and the White folks who control it have to be seen as depraved and evil. It is far safer to dig up dirt on a murdered child’s father, or blame a hoodie or bring up OJ than accept White victimization of Black folks. Dehumanizing Black people allowed slavery to exist in the “land of the free” for centuries. It allowed the public lynchings of Black men (which were treated like picnics, with White men, women and children engaging in a barbarism that is impossible to overstate). It allowed White folks to take pieces of the charred remains of the Black victims of a lynching and place it on their mantelpiece. It allowed attendees of lynchings to send postcards depicting the horrific aftermath of a lynching to equally depraved friends and family. It allowed jury after jury to acquit or fail to indict White cops and citizens who murder unarmed Black children (which are modern day lynching). Without the constant demonization of Black folks, White people would be forced to “look in the mirror” and would dislike what they see. Elimination of the demonization of Black people would cause a serious soul searching, that would result in fair minded, nonracist White folks beginning to question the status quo. But it is far easier and safer to blame the victim, a trick the powerful have used against the weak and marginalized for ages. This is why the MSM seems so quick to defend this epidemic of state sanctioned murder of Black males, be it through soft ball interviews of the murderers, or finding ways to blame the murdered child, or his family.

I told Peanut that the story in Yes, Virginia, was a real one.

    ………………….

Dear Editor, I am 8 years old.

Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus.

Papa says, “If you see it in The Sun, it’s so.”

Please tell me the truth, is there a Santa Claus?

    Virginia O’Hanlon

    115 W. 95th St.

    ………………………………………………………

Virginia, your little friends are wrong. They have been affected by the skepticism of a skeptical age. They do not believe except they see. They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds. All minds, Virginia, whether they be men’s or children’s, are little. In this great universe of ours man is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect, as compared with the boundless world about him, as measured by the intelligence capable of grasping the whole truth and knowledge.

Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! How dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus! It would be as dreary as if there were no Virginias. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The eternal light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished.

Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well not believe in fairies! You might get your papa to hire men to watch in all the chimneys on Christmas Eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if they did not see Santa Claus coming down, what would that prove? Nobody sees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not, but that’s no proof that they are not there. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the world.

You tear apart the baby’s rattle and see what makes the noise inside, but there is a veil covering the unseen world which not the strongest man, nor even the united strength of all the strongest men that ever lived, could tear apart. Only faith, fancy, poetry, love, romance can push aside that curtain and view and picture the supernal beauty and glory beyond. Is it all real? Ah, Virginia, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding.

No Santa Claus! Thank God he lives and he lives forever. A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay 10 times 10 thousand years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood.

Lyrics to “Louie Louie” according to songlyrics.com. I remember when this was on the radio. No one, absolutely no one could understand the lyrics.

    Louie Louie, oh no
Sayin’ we gotta go, yeah yeah, yeah yeah yeah
    Said Louie Louie, oh baby
    Said we gotta go

A fine little girl, she waits for me
Catch a ship across the sea
Sail that ship about, all alone
Never know if I make it home

Louie Louie, oh no no no
Sayin’ we gotta go, oh no
    Said Louie Louie, oh baby
    Said we gotta go

Three nights and days I sail the sea
    Think of girl, all constantly
On that ship I dream she’s there
I smell the rose in her hair

    Louie Louie, oh no
Sayin’ we gotta go, yeah yeah, yeah yeah yeah
    Said Louie Louie, oh baby
    Said we gotta go
Okay, let’s give it to ’em, right now!

See, see Jamaica, the moon above
It won’t be long, me see me love
Take her in my arms again
I’ll tell her I’ll never leave again

    Louie Louie, oh no
Sayin’ we gotta go, yeah yeah, yeah yeah yeah
    Said Louie Louie, oh baby
    Said we gotta go

I said we gotta go now
Let’s take this on outta here
    Let’s go!
