Applying for Pa. Medicaid expansion? Wait in line

Almost seven weeks after the launch of Healthy Pennsylvania, the state’s Medicaid expansion plan, enrollment has been hampered by delays.

Only an estimated 55,000 of 163,968 people who applied for the program by Jan. 1 have been enrolled in the Medicaid expansion, said Kait Gillis, spokeswoman for the state Department of Human Services.

She acknowledged the delays and said the agency was working to fix them.

For example, advocates say people with active addictions and mental-health issues have been moved from the general assistance program and switched to a private insurer that was not expecting or prepared for their needs.

Her enthusiasm and humility is palpable; and invoking her own mother in casting in historic context her visit to the White House at the invitation of, and being hosted by the first black President and First Lady, is very emotional.

Obama to propose raising taxes on wealthy

President Obama plans to propose raising $320 billion over the next 10 years in new taxes targeting wealthy individuals and big financial institutions to pay for new programs designed to help lower- and middle-income families, senior administration officials said Saturday.

In his State of the Union address Tuesday night, Obama will propose raising the capital gains and dividend tax rates to 28 percent for high earners; imposing a fee on the liabilities of about 100 big financial institutions; and greatly broadening the amount of inherited money subject to taxes.

An Artist Turned An Abandoned New Orleans Complex Into A Tribute To Black History
A public art project in the Algiers neighborhood of New Orleans has become one of the most powerful, provocative, and ambitious civil rights statements in this city’s history. This week will be its last.

Over the past two months, an unheralded public art project in New Orleans has morphed into arguably one of the most powerful, provocative, and ambitious civil rights statements in this city’s history. Housed in an abandoned apartment complex in the low-income Algiers neighborhood, Exhibit Be initially wasn’t even supposed to last more than a day. But this weekend will be its last; the dilapidated buildings infused with painted tributes and installations will likely soon be buffed or destroyed.
“It’s a wrap,” said Brandan Odoms, also known as Bmike, the curator of the project. “I haven’t had the moment to really witness what’s happening because I’m constantly in it. One day I’m going to sit down and really think about the beauty and the singularity of how this all happened by chance.”
It happened by chance earlier this fall when property manager Bill Thomason caught Bmike illegally painting a Tupac mural in one of the five buildings at De Gaulle Manor, a complex built in the 1960s that had been run down and eventually abandoned post-Katrina. Instead of calling the cops, Thomason made Odoms a proposal.
“I’ve been looking for you,” Thomason, 55, said. “I’d like to see if we can do something together.”
Soon thereafter Exhibit Be opened and has hosted car shows, poetry slams, dozens of school groups, myriad photographers, artists, and locals, most of whom heard through word of mouth. It’s also been interactive; the kids who have come through the space are asked to paint and leave their mark.
On Monday, Jan. 19, Exhibit Be will close by hosting a block party; rappers Dead Prez will be performing live, there will be food trucks, marching bands, and people will celebrate. Before it’s ghosted, here are a few of the stories and images from this uniquely New Orleans project.

Back home after the swim and errands.

    Going through the DVR.

Loved last night’s Grimm: re-watching certain parts.
    Re-watching Black-ish: too funny.
Re-watching Empire: Cookie is the truth. I didn’t like the First Son at first, but he’s growing on me because his persona makes absolute sense. He’s the oldest. He SAW and UNDERSTOOD the criminal life of Cookie and Lucious – so, him becoming a Brooks Brother Button Down Disciple makes sense. I loved how Cookie called Lucious on his parenting. I also think folks who say that Cookie doesn’t have boundaries – um, she’s been in prison for the past 17 years. So, her barging in on Jamal and ‘ Dora’, and sitting down on their bed like it’s nothing – she doesn’t respect privacy because she’s HAD NONE for the past 17 years. Lucious is disappointing. He should have totally hooked Cookie up. Arriving at his house IN A YELLOW CAB- what is this foolishness. Should have had a car and chauffer ready for Cookie the moment he knew she got out. Lucious, the more you do, the less Cookie would have to complain, plus, if he paid for the car and chauffer, he’d know her movements…think, Lucious. Think.

Right Wing Nut Job Shoots Oklahoma Police Chief Three Times – Lives, Won’t Be Charged
AUTHOR: RANDA MORRIS JANUARY 15, 2015 11:08 PM

According to newsok.com, neighbors describe Horton and the woman who lives with him as ‘not very friendly.’ Signs on either side of the home’s front door warn of zombies. ‘Certified zombie killer,’ and ‘Warning, zombie’s Inside, Enter At Your Own Risk,’ greet visitors who dare to visit. Some described Horton as recently ‘being on edge.’ At least seven guns were removed from the property following the shooting.

Horton’s Facebook page is pretty much what you would expect to see on the page of any Obama-hating, Sharia-law fighting, NRA-loving, right-wing American patriot.

      John Crawford

      • Ametia says:

Yes, the cops didn’t call him and tell him, to chill, they’d come to Walmart , get him and the toy gun and do what? take him home, ask him to drop the toy gun?

NOPE, these mutherfuckas gunned down John Crawford and KILLED him like a rabid animal.

Tamir Rice and the Value of Life
    JAN. 11, 2015
    Charles M. Blow

An extended video released last week of the shooting death of Tamir Rice in Cleveland appears to show an unconscionable level of human depravity on the part of the officer who shot him, a stunning disregard for the value of his life and a callousness toward the people who loved him.

His black life didn’t seem to matter. But it does.

On Nov. 22, two officers responded to a 911 call about a “guy” in a park pointing a gun that was “probably fake.” (By the way, Ohio is an open-carry state, so having and carrying a gun is not a crime in and of itself.)

The guy was Tamir. He had a pellet gun. There is no indication in police statements that he ever fired it.
