    Just got another of those e-mail solicitations from Debbie Wasserman-Schultz…

    I don’t know how the DNC doesn’t see how incredibly objectionable she is to so many of us …there’s a certain tone-deafness and arrogance at play here when she actually believes she has the clout or confidence with those of us they acquired through the OFA list – or more importantly, that she can convince me to part with a dime of my hard-earned money…

    The whole ‘the repugs are coming, be afraid’ scare tactic is not only played out and worn-out, but coming from such an untrustworthy person as Debbie, is almost laughable in its attempt at getting her desired response..

    Go away Debbie..and please take Hillary with you..

    Shortly after midnight on September 14, 2000, James Ghent slipped out of his Miami home, climbed into his car with a suit, a toothbrush, and a change of underwear, and drove nearly 500 miles to Tallahassee to ask Jeb Bush for his rights back…

    Ghent completed his final prison sentence in the early 1990s and his parole in 1995. He got clean. He remarried and raised a family. He went back to school for a degree in radiography.

    But like everyone convicted of a felony in Florida, Ghent permanently lost his right to vote, serve on a jury, and run for office. The only way to regain these rights was to petition the governor for clemency. Ghent believed voting “should always be a right,” but he was also motivated by economic concerns. He couldn’t receive a professional license to practice radiography unless the governor granted his petition. And so on that September morning, Ghent descended into the basement of the state Capitol with dozens of other petitioners for a unique Florida ritual: ex-felons entreating the governor and members of his cabinet for the restoration of their civil rights.

    These hearings, held four times annually, begin promptly at 9 a.m. One by one, ex-offenders like Ghent approach a podium, where they have five minutes to make their case. A red light signals their time is up. If the governor recommends clemency, and if a majority of the cabinet members agree—and they almost always do—the ex-offender’s civil rights are restored. If the governor feels otherwise, the petitioner returns home without the full privileges of citizenship…

    Bush issued his verdict as soon as Ghent concluded his pitch. “I’m going to deny the restoration of civil rights,” he said. He wanted to see Ghent remain on the straight and narrow a bit longer, to prove he had really changed his ways. “I hope you come back, and I wish you well.”

    Fifteen years later, Ghent remembers the sting of those words. “He was very dismissive,” says Ghent. The ex-felon wanted to push back against Bush’s decision. But he simply said, “Thank you,” and turned away.

    Ghent was destined to remain an unwilling member of an unlucky club: the legions of Florida citizens—disproportionately African Americans, like him—who since the Civil War have been barred from the democratic process because of past convictions. Florida is currently one of three states that permanently disenfranchise everyone with felony convictions, even after they have completed all the terms of their sentences—a practice that today excludes nearly 1.5 million Floridians from voting, including about 20 percent of the state’s black voting-age population. Under Bush, some low-level offenders regained their rights without appearing in person. But for many ex-felons, including some convicted of minor drug crimes, the only way to prevail was to show up and plead for clemency.

    The year Ghent stood before Bush at the podium, the consequences of felon disenfranchisement were particularly profound. The 2000 presidential election was ultimately decided by a 537-vote margin in Florida. More than 500,000 ex-felons were barred from the polls, including at least 139,000 African Americans, who vote overwhelmingly for Democratic candidates. Their exclusion almost certainly changed the outcome of the race. The beneficiary, of course, was Jeb Bush’s brother.

        The whole bunch of them suck..

        We’re in deep doo-doo…What a weak slate of candidates – the world is laughing at us and wondering how a great country like ours got stuck with so many deluded losers as potential leader of the world’s greatest nation..

    While on Meet the Press last weekend, unintentionally ironic neurosurgeon Ben Carson compared abortion to slavery, stating “During slavery, a lot of the slave owners thought that they had the right to do whatever they wanted to that slave. Anything that they chose to do. And what if the abolitionists had said, ‘I don’t believe in slavery. I think it’s wrong, but you guys do whatever you want to do.’ Where would we be?”

    I imagine many of you are reading this and wondering how and why Carson felt the need to make that analogy. Some of you might have even re-read my previous paragraph twice, just to make sure you weren’t missing anything. And I’m sure a couple of you even googled this quote, just to make sure it wasn’t taken out of context. If you did any of this, you did it because you’re a sane person. And, like most sane people, you probably have trouble understanding why quasi insane people do and say the things they do and say.

    Unfortunately, your efforts will be in vain. Because trying to understand why Ben Carson connected abortion to slavery is like asking a box of Pampers Swaddlers for directions to Detroit. All you need to know is that, for whatever reason, Ben Carson likes to compare stuff he doesn’t like to slavery. For instance, here are his thoughts on Obamacare in 2013:

    According to The Hollywood Reporter, the network has thus decided to set the project aside for now, at least until the end of the current pilot season, when it will resume its search for the right actor to cast in the role; assuming they actually do eventually revisit the idea.

    Online Charter Schools Have An “Overwhelming Negative Impact,” Study Finds

    More than 200,000 students are enrolled in the online schools, but evidence suggests they are getting a very bad education in return.

    Online charter schools, which enroll 200,000 students nationwide, have an “overwhelming negative impact” on the academic outcomes of students by almost every measure, according to a series of sweeping national reports released today by three different policy and research centers.

    Stanford’s Center for Research on Education Outcomes, or CREDO, found that students at online charter schools saw dramatically worse outcomes than their counterparts at traditional, brick-and-mortar schools. Over the course of a year, cyber school students lost out on the equivalent of 180 days of learning in math and 72 days reading, the center said.

    In the most comprehensive examination to date of online charters, CREDO found that more than two-thirds of online charter schools had academic growth that was worse than traditional schools. James Woodworth, a research analyst for CREDO, called the study’s overall findings “somber” in a statement.

    The Knowledge is Power Program (KIPP) is the largest corporate charter school chain in the U. S, with 141 schools and 50,000 students in 20 states. KIPP was launched in 1994 by David Levin and Michael Feinberg, two former Ivy Leaguers and Teach for America (TFA) corps members assigned to teach in Houston, where the first KIPP school was created. Since 2000, when KIPP students performed a skit at the Republican National Convention, KIPP has become the poster school model for “no excuses” education, and today it receives hundreds of millions in donations from corporations, corporate foundations and venture philanthro-capitalists.

    KIPP requires the poorest urban children, those who have received the least in life, to earn everything at KIPP, from paychecks for good behavior and working hard to the very shirts they wear. At some KIPPs, children must even earn their right to sit at a desk (rather than on the floor) for 8 to 10 hours a day.

    What would your reaction would be if your fifth-grader came home every day for the first four days of school to tell you she sat on the floor without a desk? What do you think Michelle Obama would say if her children came home telling her they were not good enough to have a desk, or that they had not proven they could follow directions well enough, or sit quietly long enough, or walk a line straight enough, or track the teacher intently enough, or raise their hands quickly enough, or wait long enough to go to the bathroom, or that they had not worked hard enough to earn decent treatment?

    In bipartisan budget deal, not all ‘cuts’ are created equal

    When Rachel asked Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) last night about the tentative budget agreement between the White House and congressional Republican leaders, the presidential hopeful conceded he hadn’t yet read the agreement, but he was skeptical.

    “Our goal is to expand Social Security benefits [and] to push for a Medicare-for-all single-payer program,” Sanders said. I will not be supportive of cuts in those programs.”

    It’s a safe bet that many progressive policymakers will feel the same way, which may raise doubts about the viability of the newly announced deal.

    In practice, however, there are “cuts” and then there are “cuts.”

    Democrats have quite a few reasons to like the budget deal – $80 billion in sequestration relief goes a long way – on top of the peace of mind that comes with eliminating the possibility of government shutdowns and debt-ceiling crises until 2017.

    But did President Obama accept entitlement cuts in exchange? I’m reluctant to start parsing the meaning of the word “cut,” but the Washington Post’s Greg Sargent talked to a progressive expert this morning who sounded an optimistic note.
    On Medicare and Social Security: Nancy Altman, the president of Social Security Works, a group that strenuously opposes benefits cuts and argues for their expansion, tells me that the deal “doesn’t actually cut benefits or really hurt beneficiaries who aren’t gaming the system.”

    Altman says the Medicare cuts are all on the provider side, which could harm beneficiaries at some point, but it’s not a major concern.
    It’s true that the deal includes “reforms” to the Social Security Disability Insurance program, which was facing major deadlines of its own, and Republicans had previously said they’d only divert funding from Social Security’s retirement insurance program to SSDI if Democrats accepted benefit cuts.

    There seems to be growing anger about who’s moving in to Chicago’s Pilsen neighborhood.

    Some residents seem to fear they will be forced out and the signs of that fear are ugly, reports CBS 2’s Mike Parker.

    Little by little, the mostly Latino Chicago neighborhood known as Pilsen is changing.

    Recently amid the brightly colorful signs of its Hispanic businesses, something a little different: a small, gourmet coffee shop known as Bow Truss appeared in 2014.

    Rudy Cordero, the operations director of the chain of Bow Truss shops, now spreading even to California, says the place has been hit by graffiti four times, three in the past week.

    There was this recent statement from a group called the Pilsen Alliance: “While the racial character of the message must be rejected, the sense of frustration must be noted. Low income families are being displaced from Pilsen and replaced by wealthier, white, single people.”

    Alderman Solis says, “Pilsen has always been a community that’s accepted different groups, different ethnic groups, different racial groups.”

    The George Lucas Family Foundation has announced a 10 million endowment that will support the recruitment of talented USC School of Cinematic Arts students from communities that are underrepresented in the entertainment industry.

    The gift, which is the largest single donation for student support in the school’s history, will establish The George Lucas Foundation Endowed Student Support Fund for Diversity, which will provide financial support for African American and Hispanic students enrolled at the school, meaning African American or Hispanic students at the undergraduate and graduate levels will receive priority consideration.

    Student support will be split equally between male and female students who will be known as George Lucas Scholars or Mellody Hobson Scholars.

    The first recipients will be awarded for the fall of 2016.
