Tuesday Open Thread: Celebrating Native American Heritage Month

Rock MocsNovember is Native American Heritage Month

November is National Native American Heritage Month 2015 in the United States — and the period of Nov. 8-14 is the worldwide “Rock Your Mocs Week” in which Native peoples stand together and show their Native pride by wearing their moccasins. This year, in recognition of Native American Heritage Month, First Nations Development Institute (First Nations) has pulled together some Native American food recipes that we think you’ll enjoy. It’s a way to bring a bit of Native America to your table.

In previous years we have provided a reading list of Native American books at http://www.firstnations.org/books, and a collection of our favorite Native American movies and quotations, both at http://www.firstnations.org/HeritageMonth. But this year, instead of appealing to your mind, ears or eyes, we’re going for your taste buds.

The recipes we’re sharing this year come courtesy of two of our grantees — Dream of Wild Health and the Intertribal Agriculture Council — and our own staff member Jona Charette (Northern Cheyenne/Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa) and her aunts Maria Charette and Patricia Rowland (both Northern Cheyenne).

The recipes can be found online at http://www.firstnations.org/recipes. They are for the following comestibles:
•Wild Gitigan Salad and Dressing
•Wojapi (Dakota Berry Sauce)
•Three Sisters Soup
•Double Cornbread Muffins
•Corn, Blueberry and Wild Rice Salad
•Blueberry and Peach Salsa
•Wild Rice Hamburgers
•Berry Pudding
•Dried Berries
•Dry Meat Soup
•Pemmican

Black tea-partier Jenean Hampton elected LT. Governor Kentucky…
Why does this feel like a replay of Florida’s Rick Scott’s choice of Jennifer Carrol as running mate and Lt. Governor..?

We all know how that went – and how it all ended..

SO, Bevin won in Kentucky. Whatever happens is on you. No whining you stupid muthaphuckas when he takes away your healthcare.

BUT…I have been told, over and over, that these are the White folks that Hillary Clinton can reach.
Now, I’ve been saying this is a sucker’s bet…but, I’ve been told otherwise.

Same stupid muthaphuckas voting against their best interests.

  5. eliihass says:

So, we lost Kentucky…and it looks like the repugs get to keep the Virginia Senate… So much for Terry Mcauliffe and the Clinton political machine.

This should be a red flag for Debbie Wasserman-Schultz and the DNC. We need to do so much more than prop Hillary up for president, at the expense of the health and success of the rest of the Democratic party..

    • Liza says:

“This should be a red flag for Debbie Wasserman-Schultz and the DNC.” Yeah, one would hope. The only thing that the DNC’s “Hillary is your only choice” has going for it is that the GOP candidates are all fools or certified loons. Even so, it might not work.

      • Ametia says:

That’s why that DNC mentality of well, the GOP alternative or else Hillary.

That thinking is so INSULTING, and if Hillary and her ilk had any sense of purpose or integrity, they would know how insulting this is too. But NARCISSIST cannot be insulted not really, they feign indignation. (see video above)

To want to be POTUS so bad, you would sell yourself as the only choice, is the height of NARCISSISM.

      • Liza says:

Hillary wants it and doesn’t care how she gets it. We saw that in 2008. I’ve never been a fan, but the 2008 primaries are at least half of the reason why I would never vote for her.

    • Ametia says:

Propping up Hillary for POTUS is akin to building a toy airplane with ELMER’S GLUE.

    • Liza says:

Honestly, I have no idea what the DNC is doing about state and local races. Is there a strategy to take back the House and the Senate in 2016? I have no idea. Are they concerned about the governor races? I have no idea. Are they concerned about state legislatures? I really don’t know. I think it’s entirely possible that getting Hillary elected is most of their focus for 2016.

      • Ametia says:

We need to REMIND The Clinton machine that they did not win for Terry MaCaullife, BLACK WOMEN VOTERS did

      • eliihass says:

‘..I think it’s entirely possible that getting Hillary elected is most of their focus for 2016…”

It is. Did you hear or see anyone including those running for president remind people these past few weeks that there were important elections today..? How come Terry didn’t get Hillary or Bill to come out to Virginia and do one large event for the senate Democrats on the ballot..>?

Did anyone hear from Debbie Wasserman Schultz urging Democrats in states like mine to rally for candidates in tough races in states like Kentucky and Virginia — to phone bank at the very least..? Even amongst the ‘politically informed’ on social media, how many mentioned the gubernatorial race in Kentucky, or encouraged people to get out and vote today – or shared that we needed every vote cast to keep the Kentucky governor’s office in our column..?

I keep coming back to this video because it captures for me everything about the real Hillary even after decades in politics and decades of daily access to, guidance, counsel and aggressive prep by an out-sized and overpriced brain trust comprised of the supposedly brightest, best and most seasoned stars of politics, economics, industry.

This incident put in stark terms only serves to expose her not only as mediocre, but lacking in even the most basic of skills, humanity, maturity, foresight, insight and on, and on –

This was an audience comprised entirely of students. Students. She was there in her capacity as the Secretary of State – America’s top Diplomat – And this was her reaction to a young questioner..?

Can you even begin to imagine if Mrs Obama did this – complete with the “I’m the Sec. of State not my husband” bit…? She would have been savaged as a low-class, disgraceful, and unworthy representative of this country…Yet here was our top Diplomat who had also been first lady and a senator – and was supposedly seasoned – And she couldn’t even handle a poorly interpreted question from a young student – on a trip by the way to a traditionally patriarchal country – for which she should have been prepared, read up and caught up with the culture/mentality if indeed the misinterpreted question was not misinterpreted..

This was our top Diplomat…all tacky and petty going bonkers on a bloody student…

    • Ametia says:

Keep bringing those RECEIPTS. The utter DISDAIN, DISGUST, & INDIGNATION! Her body language, tone, and face says it all

Hillary was way out of league & comfort zone. Plus she was the MINORITY in that room, and she din’t LIKE that one bit.

HOW DARE you BLACK PEOPLE question me about my husband!

      • Liza says:

I believe this is the real Hillary. She just couldn’t pretend for these folks, probably figured it wouldn’t matter.

    • Liza says:

I remember when this happened. What was her problem? Jet lag? She could not have been more rude or more condescending.

      • eliihass says:

Jet lag..? For a seasoned politico and our top Diplomat traveling in the comfort of customized Air Force jets with schedules carefully crafted to avoid such..?

Right Wing Troll Chuck Johnson Moves to Quash Subpoena From National Abortion Federation

    By Charles Johnson

We have an update to our article on horrible right wing troll Chuck C. Johnson’s subpoena from the National Abortion Federation; his lawyer has now filed a motion to quash the subpoena, not on grounds of legality, but because it doesn’t give him enough time to comply with the demands to produce his documents and correspondence.

Of course, Chuck also stated publicly he doesn’t have any documents pertaining to this subpoena, so there seems to be a bit of a logical problem here. Quote:

Johnson is unsure of how to comply with material that doesn’t exist.

What is Your Story of America?
Filmmakers Annabel Park and Eric Byler are making a film that attempts to answer the question about what divides us as Americans. Here is a profound excerpt:
Park wrote about what she learned from that last scene:
At the end of the video, when James catches himself being unfairly judgmental of people on welfare, when he realizes that he is not so different from the people he’d been judging, you can see the light bulb go on over his head. It took me months longer, but a light bulb went on for me as well when I revisited this experience watching the video: I’m not so different from James…

James’ personal need is in terrible conflict with his political beliefs, his sense of self, and a story about America, I’ll call it the Confederate South story, that he had being using to make sense of life. The basic story that I had been using, I’ll call it the New America story, is different from his, but it operates in the same way in my life.

The basic story gives us a constant framework for understanding most of what happens in the public sphere and where the public and private intersect: these are the good people; these are the bad people; these are our values; these are their values, etc…

Looking back, it’s amazing that James opened up to us about his dilemma and the details of his situation. If he hadn’t done that, I may not see him as a person with a unique personal story. This conversation challenged the three of us to go outside of our basic story of America to understand each other.

The Clintons with the help of the likes of Vernon Jordan, Minyon Moore, etc. have also long figured out the art of the political chicken dinner deal – and other ways to deceive and exploit them – Look at all the CBC folks dancing for their supper…If they dance hard enough, Massa Clinton might even offer them the leftovers..

Stephen Colbert’s bombshell #BlackLivesMatter endorsement: “Black people aren’t imagining this stuff”
“This is a great example for law enforcement, before resorting to violence, first just to twerk things out” VIDEO
    SARAH BURRIS

Late Show” host Stephen Colbert took a moment during his Monday evening show to discuss the use of excessive force by police departments across the country. While he began the segment by acknowledging the hard work police do and hope that a majority of police are honest, he said, “black people aren’t imagining this stuff.” He went on to lighten the claim by take the side of “you” meaning any audience member.

Perhaps, a solution to the bad rap cops are getting is to twerk it out as one Washington, D.C., officer did while trying to do the Nae Nae. “That’s right! A police officer ended a tense situation with a Dance-Off! Nobody got arrested,” Colbert said. “But somebody did get served! This is a great example for all law enforcement, before resorting to violence, first just to twerk things out.”

Unfortunately, however, the Andersonville Police Department has opted for a different approach by giving their officers nunchucks which have already proven effective “by our nation’s Ninja Turtles.”

White Privilege and Killing Useless Eaters: The Death Rate for Middle-Aged White People Without a High School Education is Rising at an Extreme Rate
    Sharing some initial thoughts…

All human suffering is to be condemned. My sense of linked fate extends to my brothers and sisters on both sides of the color line. With those qualifications having been noted, while I am concerned and send positive energy out to all folks who are struggling in these perilous times, I have no tears, loss of sleep to be experienced because, or great sadness for the white victimology blues channeled by The New York Times’ new story on the rising death/suicide rates among white middle-aged people who do not have a high school education.

Life is hard. When black and brown folks suffer it is quotidian and “just life as usual” in these United States. When white folks in the same cohort encounter challenges it is headline worthy in one of the country’s (and world’s) leading journals of record.

Ultimately, the white racial frame and white privilege are in overdrive this week.

White heroin addicts get sympathy and empathy on 60 Minutes while people of color are erased from the story–the latter is a group to be punished for drug use; the former is to be helped for they are “sick” and “made a mistake”.

Tom Jones to get his DNA tested for black ancestry because ‘a lot of

black people still tell me I’m just passing as white’

    It is unusual.

Singer Tom Jones plans to get his DNA tested to find out if he has some black ancestry, he told The Times of London magazine in an interview published Saturday.

The 75-year-old Welshman gained international fame in a career that has spanned over 50 years with hits like “It’s Not Unusual,” “What’s New Pussycat” and “She’s a Lady.”

Jones, whose parents were Welsh and English, said his signature baritone voice and thick, curly hair has prompted questions about his race for years.

“A lot of people still think I’m black,” Jones said. “When I first came to America, people who had heard me sing on the radio would be surprised that I was white when they saw me. Because of my hair a lot of black people still tell me I’m just passing as white.”

This is what I’ve been saying Ametia, once they feel like their little white privilege and security is even remotely or in this case according to her, indirectly and generally threatened, their transferred aggression, hostility and hate is palpable..

She confronts a random black woman on the street and lets rip – no filter, no consideration, no humanity, no respect..

This is what they do. This is why I fight so hard for our first black FLOTUS, because if anyone has consistently receieved the deep cut and brunt of this condescending racial hate, hostility and resentment on the highest and most publicly dehumanizing level, it’s her..

She gets absolutely no benefit of the doubt. They even question her intelligence, trivialize her and her Ivy League degrees – yet Hillary is supposedly brilliant, and there’s never any mention of the fact Ms Ann failed the D.C bar – one of the easiest bar exams in the country..Let it have been Mrs Obama and it would have been wielded forever as proof that she isn’t smart or worthy and that she never earned any of her accomplishments…

Death Rates Rising for Middle-Aged White Americans, Study Finds
    NOV. 2, 2015

Something startling is happening to middle-aged white Americans. Unlike every other age group, unlike every other racial and ethnic group, unlike their counterparts in other rich countries, death rates in this group have been rising, not falling.

That finding was reported Monday by two Princeton economists, Angus Deaton, who last month won the 2015 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Science, and Anne Case. Analyzing health and mortality data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and from other sources, they concluded that rising annual death rates among this group are being driven not by the big killers like heart disease and diabetes but by an epidemic of suicides and afflictions stemming from substance abuse: alcoholic liver disease and overdoses of heroin and prescription opioids.

The analysis by Dr. Deaton and Dr. Case may offer the most rigorous evidence to date of both the causes and implications of a development that has been puzzling demographers in recent years: the declining health and fortunes of poorly educated American whites. In middle age, they are dying at such a high rate that they are increasing the death rate for the entire group of middle-aged white Americans, Dr. Deaton and Dr. Case found.

The mortality rate for whites 45 to 54 years old with no more than a high school education increased by 134 deaths per 100,000 people from 1999 to 2014.

“It is difficult to find modern settings with survival losses of this magnitude,” wrote two Dartmouth economists, Ellen Meara and Jonathan S. Skinner, in a commentary to the Deaton-Case analysis that was published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

    Melania Trump, the Silent Partner
    By GUY TREBAY
    SEPT. 30, 2015

Lying prone on a rug adorned with the Great Seal of the United States, the woman who might someday be first lady is wearing high-heeled sandals and a crimson bikini.

The date is February 2000. Donald J. Trump hasn’t yet thrown his hat into the ring as a Reform Party candidate, yet he’s already set in motion a machine that 15 years on will turn a voluble political maverick into the front-runner for the Republican Party presidential nomination.

The woman on the rug is Melania Knauss, a Slovene model, who at 29 is almost a quarter-century younger than her billionaire future husband. The rug is a prop in an Oval Office set mocked up in a Manhattan photo studio. Spread across two pages of the now defunct Talk magazine, Mr. Trump is seen in an inset close up; telescope back from the picture and what you’d see is Mr. Trump seated behind the presidential desk and at his feet his future wife, a woman striking in her beauty and docility.

If it is always the case in politics that you “play a role,” as Ms. Knauss observed in a caption accompanying those photos, you do this because politics is, above all else, “a business.”

Observers of the business and ongoing theater of a Trump candidacy are bound to be struck by the passive role played by the candidate’s wife, one seeming to predate gender equality, in an embrace of values from an era when a potential first lady might be less likely to have served as her husband’s former law firm mentor (as Michelle Obama once was) than his carpet ornament.

“Why do we not see her?” Frank Luntz, the Republican pollster, asked recently, referring to Mrs. Trump’s near invisibility on the campaign trail, her sole appearance a wordless photo op for which she smiled prettily as her husband announced his candidacy. “One reason is that Republicans take a traditional view of marriage,” Mr. Luntz said. “And she is not a traditional spouse.”
