    Michigan Officials Quietly Gave Bottled Water To State Employees Months Before Flint Residents

    The Michigan Department of Technology, Management & Budget decided to haul water coolers into the Flint state building in January of 2015 out of concern over the city’s water quality, a year before bottled water was being made available to residents, according to documents obtained by Progress Michigan.

    Flint switched its water source from Detroit to the Flint River in April 2014, which is now known to have caused lead to leach into the city’s tap water. After two boil advisories were issued in August and September of 2014, the city sent residents a notice that the level of trihalomethanes (TTHMs), which can cause liver and kidney problems, had exceed federal limits, although they were told that it was still fine to use the water and no corrective actions needed to be taken.

    But concerns raised over water quality were enough for officials in the state’s capitol of Lansing to decide to give state employees the option to drink bottled water from coolers, rather than from water fountains. Coolers were placed next to the fountains on each occupied floor, according to the documents, and were to be provided “as long as the public water does not meet treatment requirements.”

    For residents, however, it took researchers uncovering elevated levels of lead in children’s bloodstreams for a lead advisory to finally be issued in September of 2015. Residents were told not to drink the water and a public health emergency was declared by the Genesee County Health Department in October, and Flint’s mayor declared a state of emergency in December. The National Guard was activated in January of this year to distribute water from five fire stations — a full year after water was brought in for state employees out of concern over water quality.

    Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder (R), who some have said made the decision to switch to the Flint River himself, has claimed he didn’t know about the water problems until recently. But the plan to use that source was evaluated and rejected by the city’s emergency manager in 2012, according to a deposition. And while the purported reason for making the change in the first place was to save money while another pipeline was being built, leaked emails show that the city could have stayed with Detroit’s water and saved the same amount of money anyway.

    I’m So Damn Tired of Slave Movies

    The Birth of a Nation, Nate Parker’s Sundance darling period piece about the deadliest slave insurrection in American history, was purchased by Fox Searchlight on early Tuesday morning for $17.5 million. It was the largest deal in Sundance history, and coverage immediately suggested that The Birth of a Nation will function as some way through which the Academy can make up for this year’s diversity debacle.

    Nat Turner’s Rebellion is a fascinating story, an important one, and an under-examined one. Nate Parker struggled for years to get the project made, and I have no doubt that—as with almost any film rooted in a black experience or with a mostly black cast—it was a frequently frustrating fight. I will certainly be buying a ticket to see The Birth of a Nation when it comes to theaters. But part of me is torn about sitting through yet another film that centers around the brutalization of black people.

    Frankly, I’m tired of slavery movies.

      I understand what she means, but I still disagree.

      I think there’s so much of our history that hasn’t been told.

      And, a lot of our history is wrapped up in slavery. After all, it’s in the DNA of America.

      I’ll be tired of slavery movies after…

      I get a mini-series about Frederick Douglass
      I get one on the Freedman’s Bureau
      I get movies on Reconstruction

      I get one on the slave that George Washington hounded for years…

      Slavery is painful. I get that. But, the truth is…we hadn’t gotten A TRUTHFUL representation of American slavery..

      we’re just beginning to get that.

      How you gonna be tired of just getting the truth?

    Even with all the drama of the 2016 Republican contest for the presidential nomination, it is impossible not to notice the slow-motion train wreck that is the Hillary Clinton campaign.

    The campaign is beset by four woes that don’t seem to have any quick remedy. The only way forward for the Democratic front-runner is to hunker down, slog it out and win ugly. Since “malaise” is an overused word in politics, I’ll categorize Clinton’s campaign as “desultory” – or, “lacking a plan or enthusiasm.”

    Clinton’s four problems are obvious: Her performance as a candidate, her opponent’s viability, a growing scandal that could lead to the indictment of the former first lady and possibly a few of her closest aides, and the rejection of her legitimacy as a feminist leader.

    First, her performance as a candidate is weak and not getting stronger. Nothing about her is fresh, exciting or appealing. President Obama called it early — she just doesn’t have that “new-car smell.” Clinton’s style is stuck in the ’80s, when “message discipline” was all about delivering talking points no matter what. Sticking to the script was considered artful. Repeating yourself and having a high word count but low content was considered clever. Those days are over. Either Clinton doesn’t know that or she can’t change her style. To watch her on TV can be toe-curling. To listen to her rehearsed lines, and, recently, to hear her force Obama’s name into her answers is so contrived it lends itself to parody for SNL.

    The journalist who forced the State Department to release thousands of Hillary Clinton’s emails is opposing the government’s efforts to delay the final release by one month, warning the extension would cause “irrevocable harm.”

    On Monday, lawyers for Vice News reporter Jason Leopold filed a motion seeking to block the department from extending the amount of time that it has to release emails from the former secretary of State’s personal server.

    The Obama administration “has failed to show good cause for the requested extension, that it is necessary or that the interests of justice will be served by granting it,” Leopold’s lawyers wrote in the 13-page filing.

    The government’s excuse for not being able to release the final batch of emails this month “is woefully vague,” the lawyers said.

    The State Department on Friday requested that the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia delay by one month the deadline for it to release the last batch of Clinton’s work-related emails. The department claimed that an internal oversight caused it to overlook 7,200 pages of emails, and that the massive snowstorm hitting the East Coast would make it hard for employees to finish the review in time.

    The department insisted it would release some emails by the original deadline of Jan. 29, but asked to have until Feb. 29 to release the final batch of 55,000 pages of emails. That new schedule would delay the final release until after the first four presidential nominating contests. Clinton is currently the front-runner for the Democratic nominating contest

    GILBERT ARENAS IS A HORRIBLE PERSON, CLOWNS FLINT RESIDENTS

    Wherever Gilbert Arenas goes, drama follows, whether he’s drawing guns in an NBA locker room, or arriving at the tail end of a fist-fight between two current and active members of the NBA (both of whom had a romantic relationship at one point with his ex-wife’s sister). For the second time in as many months, Arenas has made some ill-advised posts to his Instagram account, and these received such vicious backlash that the former Wizards and Magic star has deleted his entire Instagram account.

    The Flint Water crisis has become nationally concerning news over the last couple weeks, especially considering that city officials have continually tried to make the national government aware of their burgeoning issues since 2014 (and there’s evidence that supports that). Thankfully, several people, including Diddy, Big Sean, and Meek Mill, have made generous donations to help the city of Flint, and more are helping bring awareness to what’s a very dire situation in the small Michigan city.

    Gilbert Arenas didn’t seem to care about any of that when he posted the following images–we’ve attached snapshots because he really did delete his whole account–clowning Flint women for “washing that ass with #dirtyleadwater for months,” and several other atrocious comments.

    The Flint disaster is Rick Snyder’s fault

    “You cannot separate what happened in Flint from the state’s extreme emergency-management law,” said Curt Guyette, who, working for the ACLU of Michigan, uncovered much of the scandal in Flint. “The bottom line is making sure the banks and bond holders get paid at all costs, even if the kids are poisoned with foul river water.”

    The emergency-manager law, Guyette argued, “is about the taking away of democracy and the imposition of austerity-fueled autocracy on cities that are poor and majority African American.”

    Snyder’s blaming of local authorities is disingenuous: Because of the emergency-management law, municipal officials can’t do anything without the blessing of Snyder’s viceroys.

      Snyder (most likely) thinks there were enough screw-ups and enough complicit players in this evil scheme that he can point fingers and survive. Like I been saying, the elephant in the room is the disgusting, putrid, foul Flint River water. Where is the chemical analysis, where is the treatment plan? How did you plan to turn filthy Flint River water into drinking water that would be in compliance with EPA regulations?
