Remembering Prince

SG2 thought that the other thread was getting full, so we are posting a new Prince thread. I was glued to the tv last night. Going from channel to channel. I still can’t believe it.

Neither can Luvvie:
Prince is Gone and I Don’t Understand

The world can definitely implode in 120 minutes. Today, I got on a flight to head to Atlanta and all was well. When I landed and turned on my phone, the world flipped inside out as I heard that Prince Rogers Nelson had gone on to glory.

I literally said “Nah. That can’t be true.” I said it over and over again with more conviction because surely that is just lies and fallacies and NAWL. It took me a full 45 minutes after hearing about it to be able to type “Prince died.”

That makes no sense and I can’t believe I just typed it.

At times like this, writers are expected to put some words on paper to measure up and verbalize the feeling of loss for those who have no words themselves. I tried when Michael Jackson died in 2009. I gave my best go when Whitney Houston died in 2012.

But I am currently fresh outta adequate words for this. So consider this my weak attempt, in the middle of shell shock.

I bought five newspapers this morning, and I still cannot quite believe it.

Purple Rain was a musical masterpiece.
I can’t put into words what it meant, as an awkward young Black kid…
to have someone Black make something as spectacular as Purple Rain.

PRINCE WAS UNAPOLOGETICALLY BLACK BEFORE IT WAS COOL TO BE SO

    Damon Young, 4/22/16

    ……………………..

Of course, the news of the sudden and shocking death of Prince loomed over the entire evening, like music blaring through stereo speakers; pulsating, vibrating, and reverberating sounds you could either choose to attempt to ignore or acknowledge. And when his death was broached, of course there were acknowledgements of his artistic impact and the sheer surreality of this news. But something else was brought up (repeatedly) as well. Prince was Black as fuck.

He really was…. when you tell a conglomerate to kiss your high yellow ayus because you don’t HAVE to release music to eat…. YOU ARE A BLACK GANGSTER.

Why did Prince die? Autopsy seeks answers
CNN) — [Breaking news update, published at 4:23 p.m. ET]

It could take weeks for the results of the autopsy on music superstar Prince to be released to the public, a spokeswoman for the Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office said Friday. “It could be days, depending on the type of test, and most likely weeks to have the complete set of results available to us,” Martha Weaver said. She did not say which member of Prince’s family received his body after the autopsy.

[Breaking news update, published at 4:08 p.m. ET]

Investigators in Carver County, Minnesota, found no obvious signs of trauma on the body of music superstar Prince, Sheriff Jim Olson said Friday. There also is no reason to believe that the death was a suicide, Olson said.

[Original story, published at 2:45 p.m. ET]

A day after Prince’s death stunned his fans and fellow musicians, the work of finding out why the music icon died began in earnest Friday.

An autopsy was conducted Friday at the Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office in Ramsey, Minnesota, but it could be days or weeks before results are complete, the agency said. The autopsy began at 9 a.m. CT (10 a.m. ET) and lasted four hours, the office said.

I don’t know if this is true, but just the thought has me LMAO here at work reading it.

Over at VSB, they’re talking about how Prince would just ‘do ‘ stuff in the neighborhood.

Here are the comments that made me LOL:

    popparatzee

I heard he’d pop up in his Jehovah witness biz at your door too.

    …………………………………

    PaddyfotePrincess popparatzee

He most certainly would show up at your door wearing a full fur and hand you a pamphlet.

Just the IMAGE, even if it’s not true…

    HILARIOUS.

Just looking at the Superbowl performance.

Like we say about Rev. Al – don’t think you can come for a Black man willing to wear a perm in 2016.

A Black man who is willing to perform in front of hundreds of millions of people in a do-rag -and do it to perfection….

    HE’S NEVER BOTHERED.

    LOL

Because Prince Would Want Us To Be Petty Right Now
    Awesomely Luvvie — April 22, 2016 14 40

Prince wasn’t just one of the greatest musicians of our lifetime. He was also a Shade Savant. The Side-Eye Slayer. He was clearly full of jokes and he also didn’t have time for bullshit. This is why so many Prince memes and GIFs exist. He didn’t throw shade. NAH. He orchestrated eclipses with one cutting look, or a sunglasses shift

The man who first and foremost *invented* not giving a fuckfart about gender, and did it all in the name of not giving a fuckpiss, not for his own sake.
The man who could play music out of a sitting rock.
The man whose hands could make you cry out of the cries of his guitar whenever he ripped a solo for Purple Rain.
The man who could set love pockets on liquid fire with a fierce look of his heavily paint-clad eyes.
The man who never (as I’m aware of) sang apology for drug use or rawdy behaviour, though his music could make you feel as if you were on a T-Rex high of whatthefuckyounameit.
The man who gave eclectic a good name without ever pretending to go on a world chase of sounds to make his music cool.
The man who could rock the hell out of a tiny ballad and have you listen to a rock tune as if it were a lullaby.
The man who sang about AIDS and lives lost to drugs in 1987 in a multi-million selling song, just because he could do magic.
The man who took falsetto singing to a new level.
The man who could spit tunes and sounds that would be imitated, only 10 or 15 years later as the general masses were finally ready to deal with them in pop trash.
The man who could side-eye the mountains behind you and you would feel ashamed of what you’de never even intented to do.
The man who wrote the heartbreaking Nothing Compares 2 U, the heart-melting Love in Repetition (makes me cry to this day), the heart-wrenching Purple Rain and the heart-freezing Sometimes it Snows in April, just to name a miser’s few.
The man who could jam like a madman, rap like a hoe on the hunt, slay a guitar like a demon, stroke the keys like a vestal virgin, growl like a hiena out of this world and have you hold your breath whenever it was due.

“Prince está muerto. Prince.Está.Muerto. Que viva el Poder de la Nueva Generación!”

Natalie Cole on New Years Eve, The Thin White Duke in January, The Fire of Earth, Wind and Fire in February, The Five Foot Assassin in March and now His Royal Purple Badness. My can’ts have left the universe. My chill has been swallowed by a black hole. 2016 can kick rocks.
