SG2 thought that the other thread was getting full, so we are posting a new Prince thread. I was glued to the tv last night. Going from channel to channel. I still can’t believe it.

 

Neither can Luvvie:
Prince is Gone and I Don’t Understand

The world can definitely implode in 120 minutes. Today, I got on a flight to head to Atlanta and all was well. When I landed and turned on my phone, the world flipped inside out as I heard that Prince Rogers Nelson had gone on to glory.

I literally said “Nah. That can’t be true.” I said it over and over again with more conviction because surely that is just lies and fallacies and NAWL. It took me a full 45 minutes after hearing about it to be able to type “Prince died.”

That makes no sense and I can’t believe I just typed it.

At times like this, writers are expected to put some words on paper to measure up and verbalize the feeling of loss for those who have no words themselves. I tried when Michael Jackson died in 2009. I gave my best go when Whitney Houston died in 2012.

But I am currently fresh outta adequate words for this. So consider this my weak attempt, in the middle of shell shock.

I bought five newspapers this morning, and I still cannot quite believe it.

    Purple Rain was a musical masterpiece.
    I can’t put into words what it meant, as an awkward young Black kid…
    to have someone Black make something as spectacular as Purple Rain.

    Of course, the news of the sudden and shocking death of Prince loomed over the entire evening, like music blaring through stereo speakers; pulsating, vibrating, and reverberating sounds you could either choose to attempt to ignore or acknowledge. And when his death was broached, of course there were acknowledgements of his artistic impact and the sheer surreality of this news. But something else was brought up (repeatedly) as well. Prince was Black as fuck.

    CNN) — [Breaking news update, published at 4:23 p.m. ET]

    It could take weeks for the results of the autopsy on music superstar Prince to be released to the public, a spokeswoman for the Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office said Friday. “It could be days, depending on the type of test, and most likely weeks to have the complete set of results available to us,” Martha Weaver said. She did not say which member of Prince’s family received his body after the autopsy.

    Investigators in Carver County, Minnesota, found no obvious signs of trauma on the body of music superstar Prince, Sheriff Jim Olson said Friday. There also is no reason to believe that the death was a suicide, Olson said.

    A day after Prince’s death stunned his fans and fellow musicians, the work of finding out why the music icon died began in earnest Friday.

    An autopsy was conducted Friday at the Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office in Ramsey, Minnesota, but it could be days or weeks before results are complete, the agency said. The autopsy began at 9 a.m. CT (10 a.m. ET) and lasted four hours, the office said.
