WATCH LESLIE ODOM JR. SUCCINCTLY BREAK DOWN THE WORKING BLACK ACTOR’S DILEMMA + BROADWAY’S “RARE MOMENT”
JUNE 1, 2016
TAMBAY OBENSON
In the video below (courtesy of The Hollywood Reporter Roundtables, published this morning), Leslie Odom Jr. of “Hamilton” succinctly breaks down a dilemma that many actors of color face, not only in theater, but also in film and TV, as he puts the state of the business into proper perspective. Essentially, while Broadway is seemingly having a “diversity moment” (given the success that a few high profile shows created by and starring actors of African descent have, and continue to enjoy – “The Color Purple,” “Eclipsed,” and the aforementioned “Hamilton”), it is just that… a moment; and it might be too soon to make any celebratory claims about doors being suddenly opened, or ceilings being smashed in terms of the availability and complexity of roles for actors of color (in this case, actors of African descent).
The conversation begins with the suggestion that Hollywood might have something to learn from Broadway in terms of diversity. But as Odom tells the other Tony nominated (and white) actors in the room with him, “not-so fast” guys. There’s still much work to be done. Let’s see Broadway put together successive years of even broader diversity (both on the stage, and backstage) before we pat ourselves on the back for a job well done.

Thousands of voters in limbo after Kansas demands proof they’re American
Wed Jun 1, 2016 9:53am EDT
After moving to Kansas, Tad Stricker visited a state motor vehicle office to perform what he thought was the routine task of getting a new driver’s license and registering to vote.
It was a familiar procedure for Stricker, 37, who has moved from state to state frequently in his work as a hotel manager. He filled out a voter registration form and got his driver’s license. He was not asked for more documents, he said.
So he was stunned when he tried to cast a ballot in November 2014 and was told he was not on the voter rolls. A month later, a letter from the state said why: His registration had been placed “in suspense” because he had failed to meet a state requirement he did not know about – proving he was an American.
Spurred by Secretary of State Kris Kobach, a national leader in pushing for anti-immigration and voting changes, more than 36,000 Kansas residents have joined Stricker in limbo since early 2013 under a state law that raises a new and higher barrier to voting in the United States: proof of citizenship.

MORGAN FREEMAN TURNS 79 FOR THE 79TH TIME TODAY. HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
Damon Young, 6/1/16
They say it takes 10,000 hours of practice to become an expert at something. (They’re wrong when they say that, but they still say that anyway.) Well, iconic actor and professional stately motherfucker Morgan Freeman turns 79 today for the 79th time. Which means he’s had 700,000 hours worth of practice of being 79. Which means no one has ever been or will ever be better at being 79 than Morgan Freeman is.
In honor of his 79th 79th birthday, lets look at this gallery of Morgan Freeman through the years of being 79.

Therapists often discriminate against black and poor patients, study finds
By Carina Storrs, for CNN
Updated 7:53 AM ET, Wed June 1, 2016
(CNN)Minorities and lower-income individuals can face numerous challenges in getting treatment for depression and other mental health problems. They may lack insurance or transportation to a therapist’s office; they may experience stigma in their communities around mental illness that prevents them from seeking care.
A new study finds that these groups face yet another barrier to mental health care: Therapists may be less likely to see them.
To study whether therapists had biases, researchers hired actors to record voice messages for 640 therapists in New York. In all the messages, the actors read scripts saying they had been feeling down, had insurance and would like to make an appointment.
The scripts varied the names, vocabulary and grammar to reflect race and class differences. For example, the name Amy Roberts was supposed to indicate that the caller was a white middle-class woman, whereas Latoya Johnson was used for a black middle-class woman. The scripts for working-class individuals used more slang and some grammatical errors.

Jury awards $22M to man who says police locked him in closet
Jun. 1, 2016 4:19 PM EDT
CLEVELAND (AP) — A jury has awarded $22 million to a man who says he was brutally beaten by an East Cleveland police detective, locked in a storage closet with no toilet for four days and given nothing to eat or drink except for a carton of milk.
The Cleveland jury deliberated for a day before finding for Arnold Black, 48, of East Cleveland, in a three-day civil trial. Relatives testified that Black suffers from physical and emotional problems from the beating and had to undergo surgery to remove dried blood on his brain.

Donald Trump’s Money Is A Myth – Will He Bankrupt the RNC Too?
Moneyquote:”The idea that Trump is wealthy to the tune of his oft-claimed $10 billion dollars, combined with his utter lack of transparency regarding his fantasy financial statements left little to go on. For political professionals, due diligence required we assume he could bring serious cash to the game.
By August of last year, I was working to convince major donors that Trump would be a destructive force and likely throw the race to Hillary Clinton. One moment from that period sticks with me as a turning point in my thinking about Trump’s money; a major Wall Street donor laughed when I told him we’d need to mount a serious and fully-funded effort to take on Trump if he chose to self fund.
My friend scoffed at the very idea that Trump was worth even a
quarter of the mythical $10 billion, much less that he was liquid to
the tune of more than $200 million. “He’s not a billionaire. I’m a
billionaire. He’s a clown living on credit.”
***
The evidence is mounting, and quickly, that his promises to fund his campaign are just one more Trump con; a shell, a hollow edifice of fake-it-til-you-make-it. Trump, is by the standards of
99.9% of Americans, a wealthy man, but he’s not liquid enough to fund an actual modern campaign. It’s not simply that he doesn’t have the money; it’s that his mythos requires that no one ever figure out that he doesn’t have the money.

SO DESPICABLE
I lived in San Diego for a long time and they have a world class zoo. I used to go there quite a lot and had a yearly membership. I remember the last time I was there, I was with one of my nephews and he spent a lot of time in front of the gorilla enclosure. There were several gorillas, they had a fairly good size enclosure with thick glass (or some transparent material) across the entire front of the enclosure behind the railing. So, the human stands on one side of the glass gawking at these majestic animals and they are on the other side pretty much gawking back. That was about 20 years ago, and I never again went to that zoo or any zoo. It’s just wrong. Folks making the protection of endangered species argument have a point, but there are better ways to protect animals than to force them to live in such tortuous confinement with human faces gawking at them.

I didn’t. I watched the original Roots MANY years ago when it first came out and then I read Alex Haley’s book. It was exceptionally good, groundbreaking IMO, nothing like it on TV at the time which is why I read the book right after seeing it.
I think it is a good time for a remake because this is a story that needs to be told, over and over to each generation.
How does the remake compare to the original?
I watched the first episode. The entire Kunta/Toby scene disturbs me as much today, as the original did. I couldn’t quite take watching it last night, but it’s on the DVR. Having watched Underground so recently, I’m all up in my feelings about watching the TRUTH about American slavery. I understand those that say it’s too painful. But, that doesn’t mean that it shouldn’t be shown. Our children need to know the truth of what our ancestors did for them, and how they survived so that they could THRIVE.
that’s the connection that folks like Snoop Dogg miss.
And, all the BLACK FOLK mumbling, ‘ there shouldn’t be any slave movies’, need to STFU. You know that they wouldn’t purse their lips to tell a Jew that there have been enough Holocaust movies.
AMEN
I feel you, rikyrah. It’s unbearable to watch these movies. But WATCH THEM WE MUST!
SLAVERY IS BRUTALLY DISTURBING. GUT-WRENCHING, BRUTALLY BARBARIC, TORTUROUS, BREATH-TAKINGLY CHILLING PHYSICALLY, EMOTIONALLY, SPIRITUALLY… ON ALL LEVELS OF HUMAN EXISTENCE.
Slavery cannot be explained away, as some fluke of nature.
IT IS AMERICAN HISTORY OF A RACE OF HUMANS MAIMING, RAPING, PILAGING, AND KILLING ANOTHER RACE OF HUMANS
WHY?
BECAUSE WHITE FOLKS FELT INFERIOR & WANTED TO CLAIM SUPERIOR?
This.

Donald Trump is splitting the white vote in ways we’ve never seen before
By Scott Clement
May 31 at 12:24 PM
The potential for the 2016 election to widen America’s racial voting chasm even further is nothing new. But Washington Post-ABC News polls have also identified a related dynamic: White Americans are splintering along education and gender lines at rates not seen in at least three decades.
These contours are well-known among political watchers; whites without four-year college degrees and men tend to be more Republican than women and college grads. But while these cleavages are seen across elections, it’s easy to forget that the gaps are typically not all that large — at least in comparison to this year.
Take 2012. Mitt Romney won 61 percent of non-college whites compared with 56 percent of white college grads. The gap was nearly identical between white men and white women, 62 and 56 percent.
Now, according to the latest Post-ABC poll released last week: Donald Trump received 65 percent support among white registered voters without a four-year college degree, compared with 46 percent among white college graduates, a 19-point gap. If the margin holds, it would easily be the largest education gap among whites in presidential elections since 1980.
So it’s all those poor, un-ED-U-MA-CATED White folks who just loves them some Donald?
Eventually, one would think they’d get a fucking clue that voting white doesn’t make it right.
Vijay Singh Accuses PGA Tour of ‘Absurd’ and ‘Unfair’ Treatment
A three-time major winner is turning into a major headache for the PGA Tour.
In a memorandum filed with the New York State Supreme Court on Tuesday, Vijay Singh accused Tour officials of subjecting him to “absurd” and “unfair” treatment by ignoring the use of deer antler spray by five other professional golfers playing on the PGA Tour and the Champions Tour and then lying to the public by “characterizing Singh as a cheater who caught a break.”
According to Singh, discovery revealed that five golfers, identified anonymously as Golfers A, B, C, D and E, admitted to the Tour as early as 2010 or 2011 that they had used the same spray as Singh but were not sanctioned under the Tour’s anti-doping program.
In 2013, The Tour announced its intention to suspend Singh for 90 days following his admission to Sports Illustrated that he had used the spray, which contained trace amounts of the banned growth hormone IGF-1, but quickly lifted its suspension when the World Anti-Doping Agency determined the product didn’t contain enough of the hormone to be performance-enhancing. Singh sued the Tour, contending that the announcement damaged his reputation, leading to the loss of his longtime endorsement deal with Cleveland Golf.
