    Billionaire father and daughter linked to Trump shake-up

    Donald Trump’s dramatic staff shake-up on Wednesday revealed the growing influence wielded on his campaign by a Republican mega-donor duo.

    The fingerprints of Robert Mercer, a New York hedge fund billionaire, and his middle daughter, Rebekah, can be seen all over the new Trump staffing appointments and other decisions being made by the GOP presidential nominee.

    The Mercers, who previously put $13.5 million into a super-PAC supporting Ted Cruz’s bid against Trump, have recently converted the group into the Defeat Crooked Hillary PAC, targeting Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.
    Robert Mercer has reportedly made a “substantial” additional investment of at least $1 million in the new super-PAC, which has already spent $500,000 on digital ads attacking Clinton in eight battleground states. Additionally, he and particularly Rebekah have become influential figures in Trump World in the past few months.

    Rebekah Mercer “lives in a beautiful apartment in one of Trump’s buildings on the Upper West Side [of New York City] overlooking the Hudson River,” a source who knows her told The Hill.

    A Heritage Foundation trustee and director of the Mercer Family Foundation, Rebekah takes the lead on the details of the Mercers’ political operation, while her father provides the funds.

    She’s known as a hands-on operator who won’t open up the Mercer checkbook without strict conditions about which vendors are used and which consultants are hired.

    Now loyal to Trump, the Mercers were furious when Cruz didn’t endorse the nominee at the Republican National Convention last month. And because they are among the few mega-donors to get fully behind Trump, they now increasingly have his ear.

    Stephen Bannon, the Trump campaign’s newly appointed CEO is “tied at the hip” with Rebekah Mercer, said a source who has worked with the Mercers in their political activities.

    Earlier this week, Cameron Newton made headlines when he made comments that the criticism he’s received as a quarterback haven’t been about race. He also went on to say that we’re beyond racism in the United States, much to the ire of many of his black fans.

    But once again, his theory has been disputed—this time, courtesy of LeBron James’ recent praise of Olympic athletes Simone Biles and Simone Manuel.

    James posted a congratulatory post to his Instagram and Facebook accounts that got some white people riled up:

      Smoking Gun Memo Reveals GOP Voter Fraud Bamboozlement In North Carolina

      On the heels of appeals court ruling that restored a week’s worth of early voting in North Carolina, the executive director of the state’s Republican Party emailed a memo to members of local elections boards urging them to push for “party line changes” that cut back on early voting hours, The News and Observer reported.

      The memo, sent by NCGOP executive director Dallas Woodhouse on Sunday, said that Republican board members “should fight with all they have to promote safe and secure voting and for rules that are fair to our side.”

      “Our Republican Board members should feel empowered to make legal changes to early voting plans, that are supported by Republicans,” Woodhouse wrote. “Republicans can and should make party line changes to early voting.”

      Last month, a panel of judges on the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals struck down a 2013 law passed by the state’s Republican legislature that cut back early voting in the state from 17 days to 10 days, ruling that it intended to discriminate against African Americans. Other voting restrictions in the law were struck down as well. The state has asked the Supreme Court to halt parts of the ruling and allow North Carolina to keep its cutbacks to early voting, among other provisions.

      The memo came as local election boards are working on schedules for early voting that take into account the appeals court decision. Per the News and Observer:

      County elections boards are developing new early voting schedules in response to a federal court ruling that threw out the state’s voter ID law. In addition to revoking North Carolina’s photo ID requirement, the ruling requires counties to offer 17 days of early voting.
      The voter ID law limited early voting to a 10-day period, but counties were required to offer at least the same number of voting hours as they did during the 2012 election. The court ruling eliminates that floor on hours – meaning that counties can legally provide fewer hours and fewer early voting sites than they did in the last presidential election.

      Woodhouse’s memo warmed that “Democrats are mobilizing for a fight over early voting locations and times.”

      It’s one thing to admit that Hillary Clinton is the lesser of the two evils nominated by the two major political parties. It is quite another thing to fantasize that she is a good candidate. And for anyone in the media to promote these fantasies is shameless indeed.

      Perhaps Joy Reid is being compensated for this nonsense?

    If you think what’s missing from Congress is a member of the Cheney family, you’ll be pleased with yesterday’s primary results out of Wyoming.
    Liz Cheney has won Wyoming’s Republican primary for U.S. House. Cheney beat seven challengers for a chance at the job her father, former Vice President Dick Cheney, first won 40 years ago.

    Her campaign focused on national security and rolling back federal regulations affecting Wyoming’s beleaguered coal industry.
    Incumbent Rep. Cynthia Lummis (R), who has served as Wyoming’s sole representative for the last eight years, is stepping down at the end of this Congress. There was a large GOP primary field, which Cheney ended up leading with relative ease.

    Yesterday’s results don’t guarantee Cheney’s place in Congress, but given Wyoming’s status as a ruby-red state, it’s widely assumed that the winner of the Republican primary is well positioned to win the U.S. House seat in the fall.

    What’s especially notable about Cheney’s victory is the degree to which the former Fox News pundit and State Department official had to undo the damage done by her last congressional bid.

    In April, in the face of broad criticisms about his campaign’s direction, Donald Trump shook up his leadership team and implemented a “massive restructuring.” Two months later, in June, the Republican presidential candidate made another major staffing change, ousting campaign manager Corey Lewandowski.

    And now, two months after that, facing long odds of success, Team Trump is once again undergoing an overhaul.
    Donald Trump is shaking up his campaign’s leadership amid flagging poll numbers, NBC News has learned.

    Kellyanne Conway – already a senior adviser to the campaign – told NBC News she has been promoted to the role of campaign manager. She confirmed that Paul Manafort will stay on as campaign chair but said Stephen Bannon, the co-founder of conservative Breitbart News, will come on board as campaign CEO.
    The Wall Street Journal, which first reported the staffing changes, said Manafort will stay on, though his power will clearly be diminished. The Washington Post’s report added, “Trump’s stunning decision effectively ended the months-long push by campaign chairman Paul Manafort to moderate Trump’s presentation and pitch for the general election.”

    And just when it seemed things couldn’t get much worse for Manafort, the Associated Press reported this morning that the Republican lobbyist “helped a pro-Russian governing party in Ukraine secretly route at least $2.2 million in payments to two prominent Washington lobbying firms in 2012, and did so in a way that effectively obscured the foreign political party’s efforts to influence U.S. policy.”

    I agree with you to a certain extent but I also think it’s naive to imagine they’ll just give up. They will lose the Supreme Court if they lose this election and there really is a fundamental difference between liberals and conservatives – it’s profound. They want to undo all of the New Deal precedents. That’s the goal. It will be a very different country if we go back to pre-Civil War. It really will. The House that FDR Built is the house we all live in. Besides all the bullshit and politics, there really is a huge ideological difference. They know that. That’s what’s at stake.

    They are not going to surrender. That’s a pipedream.

    According the Daily Mail UK, DC police believed the teacher they assaulted was a prostitute — even if that is true, what compelled the policeman to treat the woman the way he did? Makes no sense to me at all.

    Simon Maloy does a good job of distilling the new Gallup data on Trump voters. They aren’t exactly who most people think they are. They’re not as economically distressed or negatively impacted by the loss of manufacturing jobs as is widely assumed, and they’re often more suburban than rural. Counterintuitively, “Gallup found that the only candidate who is viewed consistently positively in areas with higher concentrations of manufacturing jobs is… Hillary Clinton.”

    And:

    “People living in commuting zones with higher white middle-aged mortality rates are much more likely to view Trump favorably,” Gallup found. The analysis also noted people who live areas that have less “intergenerational mobility” also tend to have higher levels of support for Trump. Basically, if you’re in an area where white people are experiencing consistently poor health outcomes and younger generations are having less success at moving up the economic ladder, then you’re more likely to want to vote for Donald Trump.

    Of course, we all know that race plays a major part in Trump’s appeal, but, again, not in the “a conservative is a liberal who has been mugged by reality” kind of way. Trump voters are indeed overwhelmingly white, but they are not generally whites who have had negative experiences with minority crime or even much direct employment competition with immigrants of color.

    What Gallup found is that one of the strongest indicators of Trump support is racial isolation: “Constant support for Trump is highly elevated in areas with few college graduates, far from the Mexican border, and in neighborhoods that stand out within the commuting zone for being white, segregated enclaves, with little exposure to blacks, Asians, and Hispanics.”
