Trump Jr probably believes the talking points he trotted out in his interview with Sean Hannity. The Republican Party, however, cannot claim similar ignorance
Maybe they should just change the name of Trump Tower to Russia House. And place a plaque in the room on the 25th floor where the Axis of Moral Blindness of Donald Trump Jr, Jared Kushner and Paul Manafort met in June 2016 with a Russian attorney in hopes of getting the Kremlin’s help in bringing down Hillary Clinton.
What was stunning about Trump Jr’s Fox News interview with Sean Hannity Tuesday night was the fast-talking self-confidence of the president’s oldest son. It was as if Trump Jr had entered the No Embarrassment Zone.
While he conceded a twinge of retrospective regret, even now Trump Jr failed to radiate any sign that he understands that presidential campaigns do not go trolling for opposition research from hostile foreign powers. “It’s what we do in business,” he said with innocence of Little Bo Peep. “If there is information out there, you want it.”
By his own admission, Trump Jr pressed the Russian attorney to dish the dirt. It was a different era, the president’s son stressed, since it was “pre-Russia mania.” It was as if the nature of Vladimir Putin’s regime had changed overnight from Jeffersonian democracy to thuggish authoritarianism.
Trump Jr probably believes his own talking points, a trait that he has inherited from his father. Without pre-judging the investigation by Robert Mueller, it is a fair assessment that if political stupidity were an indictable offence, Trump Jr would be facing a lengthy sentence.
The leaders of the Republican Party, however, cannot claim similar ignorance about the nature of the Trump regime. The Republican’s paralysis involves more than the party’s collective 2016 decision to put its integrity in a locked vault in Mar-a-Lago.

Barry Jenkins Adapting James Baldwin Novel for Next Movie

Variety broke the news yesterday (July 10) that Jenkins will direct his own screenplay adaptation of “If Beale Street Could Talk.” Baldwin’s 1974 novel focuses on Tish and Fonny, a Harlem couple whose marriage plans hit a roadblock when police arrest Fonny on false rape charges. The pregnant Tish and her family rush to find evidence that will exonerate Fonny, and the novel alternates between the perspectives of the two protagonists.
Jenkins told Esquire in January that he wrote the “If Beale Street Could Talk” screenplay during the same 2013 sessions that birthed “Moonlight”:

“James Baldwin is a man of and ahead of his time; his interrogations of the American consciousness have remained relevant to this day,” Jenkins told Variety. “To translate the power of Tish and Fonny’s love to the screen in Baldwin’s image is a dream I’ve long held dear. Working alongside the Baldwin estate, I’m excited to finally make that dream come true.”
Jenkins and studio Annapurna Pictures plan to begin production in October of this year. The production team will mirror that of “Moonlight.”
The filmmaker is also working on a series adaptation of Colson Whitehead’s “The Underground Railroad,” which is in development with Amazon.

Jeff Sessions’s Senate Replacement Will Be Deplorable

It has been a while since I wrote about Alabama politics, but the primaries for the special election to replace Jefferson Beauregard Sessions III in the Senate are scheduled for August 15th, and the candidates are out on the trail. From what I’m reading, Roy Moore is the current frontrunner, which is more than mildly terrifying:
As former Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore runs for U.S. Senate, he doesn’t shrink from telling voters he has twice been ousted from the bench for defying federal courts over the Ten Commandments and same-sex marriage.
Instead, he wears those rejections as a badge of honor.
Moore tells Republican voters in the blood-red state that they are akin to battle scars for standing up for what he believes.
“I will not only say what is right, I will do what is right,” Moore said during a June forum in the east Alabama city of Oxford.

Russian money laundering fraud
In 2013, Bharara began investigating a money laundering fraud scheme in New York City operated by a Russian criminal organization.[45] The alleged fraud links a $230 million Russian tax refund fraud scheme from 2008 to eleven U.S. real estate corporations.[46] The underlying tax refund fraud was first discovered by whistleblower and Russian lawyer Sergei Magnitsky, who was arrested under tax evasion charges, and within a year he was found dead in his prison cell—a suspicious circumstance.[47] Bharara and his office stated that some of the illicit proceeds were laundered in the U.S. by purchasing luxury Manhattan and Brooklyn real estate, including a 35-story block that has a pool, roof terrace, Turkish bath and indoor golf course. One of the companies named in the complaint, Prevezon, at the time had assets that included four condo units in the Financial District, each valued close to or in excess of $1 million, a $4.4 million condo at 250 East 49th Street in Turtle Bay, and an unknown amount of funds on deposit in eight separate Bank of America accounts in the name of different limited liability companies registered in New York.
The case was personal for Bharara after Russia, in April 2013, included him on the list 18 U.S. individuals banned from entering Russia in retaliation to the Magnitsky act.[48]

This is almost too much to write about.
In the past three days, the wheels have come off the Trump train, as the New York Times has broken major stories detailing that Donald Trump Jr. sought damaging information on Hillary Clinton from sources close to the Russian government. There are even emails which prove this.
We were in uncharted waters before. Now we’re about to fall off the edge of the world.
Our political system was not designed for a pass like the one through which we are traveling. The Electoral College was supposed to be the guardian preventing the unfit from assuming the office of President. But it was designed under the assumption that it would be independent of party politics. That horse bolted the barn two centuries ago. Now it’s a mere rubber stamp, and we have Donald Trump as president.
Can an election which was influenced by Russian meddling be considered legitimate? Our democracy, imperfect as it is, was hijacked by a foreign power to serve its own ends. The stench of illegitimacy already wafted around the Trump regime due to it having lost the popular vote by 3 million. Now add to this proof of collusion with Russia—which Trump Jr doesn’t deny—and we have a constitutional crisis not seen since Nixon. Associates of the putative president conspired with a foreign power to damage his electoral opponent. They did so in the same building where he resided, at the same time he was in the building. The idea that he knew nothing about it beggars belief.
There is no constitutional remedy save for impeachment. And even that wouldn’t solve the question: Was this election even legitimate? If things continue along the trajectory of the past few days, we’re going to see the courts busier than ever, as our Constitution gets reinterpreted to deal with new realities.
The President of the United States was put into power with the help of a foreign adversary. This is where we are in 2017.

If Senate Republicans fail to pass their regressive health care plan, there’s quite a bit of support among GOP members to strike a bipartisan deal with Senate Democrats and move on to other issues. There is, however, a radically different approach that’s also on the table.
Donald Trump published a tweet two weeks ago in which he said he supports a repeal-and-delay model in which Congress immediately repeals the Affordable Care Act, and then figures out a replacement model at some point down the road. Yesterday, Rush Limbaugh asked Mike Pence if he’s on board with such an approach, and the vice president, after dismissing the idea of bipartisan policymaking out of hand, replied:

Quite right. As regular readers may recall, the CBO found back in January – when “repeal an delay” was widely seen as the preferred Republican approach – that a full repeal along the lines of what Pence described yesterday, would cause premiums to spike and would take health coverage from 32 million Americans over the next decade.
This, according to the sitting president and vice president, is the approach Republican policymakers should embrace if the Senate can’t pass the current GOP plan.

It’s hard not to feel a sense of déjà vu. A few weeks ago, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), after writing a health care bill in secret, said he’d unveil his legislation on a Thursday, receive a report from the Congressional Budget Office the following Monday, and then hold a vote a few days later.
And here we are again, with McConnell writing a revised bill in secret, announcing a plan to unveil the legislation on Thursday, getting word from the CBO on Monday, and holding a vote a few days later. Politico reported:
What’s unclear is whether the Senate Republican leadership will have more success this time than the last.
An increasingly popular talking point among GOP lawmakers is the idea that their unpopular health care bill no longer exists, since McConnell’s office is rewriting it. Like too many of the Republican arguments on health care, that’s deliberately misleading: by all accounts, McConnell is looking to tweak, not fundamentally overhaul, the blueprint he unveiled in June.

But funny things sometimes happen to politicians when they return to D.C. and instead of feeling pressure from constituents, telling them to do the right thing, lawmakers start feeling pressure from their party leaders, telling them to do the partisan thing.
Sen. Dean Heller (R-Nev.), for example, has looked like a solid “no” vote, but the Nevada Republican said yesterday that the bill could still be changed to earn his support. Similarly, Sen. Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.), another critic of McConnell’s original version, said she believed the GOP blueprint is salvageable.
This story was overlooked yesterday, but it was announced that Dolt45 will NOT be building a new FBI Headquarters. This had been years in the making.
FYI – the story was that the contract was to be given to one of Kushner’s business partners. I can only think that someone got back to them and told them, nope, it couldn’t happen. A building that sensitive, the contractor would be chosen from a group of long trusted and proven contractors. There’s no way that anyone remotely attached to Kushner would pass that smell test.
So, once again, out of spite, in order to ‘bring the FBI to heel’, here goes Kushner., doing to the FBI, what he did to Qatar (reminder, Qatar wouldn’t do business with Kushner, so thus, they have been isolated)
