White supremacist and other far-right extremist groups have killed 51 police officers since 1990, according to a report published by the Anti-Defamation League last week. Left-wing extremist groups, including black nationalists, killed 11 during the same period.

In 2017 alone, black nationalists and other leftists killed no police, while white supremacists and anti-government extremists fatally attacked a police officer and two corrections officers, the report said.

But while the FBI tracks so-called “black identity extremists” as domestic terror threats — as an FBI counterterrorism report completed in August and leaked in October revealed — it doesn’t have an equivalent designation for white extremists.

Experts worry that the broad labeling of black groups, and not white ones, is an indication that federal law enforcement’s targeting of certain groups is based less on evidence than on politics.

That targeting can significantly affect how law enforcement chooses to police protests or events organized by specific groups. Many worry the report on black identity extremists specifically could be used to home in on members of Black Lives Matter – possibly infringing on their right to speak freely and protest peacefully.

The Congressional Black Caucus asked FBI Director Christopher Wray in a private meeting in November, as well as during public testimony in December, to rescind the report. Wray did not commit to doing so, but in his December testimony noted that “we continue to evaluate the data as it rolls in” and anything from a retraction to a reaffirmance to a clarification of the August report was possible. FBI spokesman Andrew Ames said Tuesday there was “no update” since then.

No More Mister points out (a couple of sources) that the lawyer doesn’t actually SAY he paid the $130,000. He says he used some of his money to FACILITATE the payment. Reporters are terrible at parsing nuance, and then the story just gets passed around. In other words, reporters many reporters don’t comprehend complexity, and they can be lazy in arriving at a common version of a story rather than looking deeper.

Yesterday Cohen made this statement admitting the bulk of the story. “In a private transaction in 2016,” Cohen said, “I used my own personal funds to facilitate a payment of $130,000 to [Daniels]. Neither the Trump Organization nor the Trump campaign was a party to the transaction with [Daniels], and neither reimbursed me for the payment, either directly or indirectly.”

… Does Cohen actually say he paid the $130,000 out of his own pocket? … All Cohen says is that he used his personal funds to “facilitate a payment of $130,000.”

… if it took Cohen a few hundred dollars to set up an entity to pay Daniels, and to wire someone else’s $130,000 to her, then he would have been using his own personal funds to faciltate that payment.

17 Jewish organizations send open letter demanding Stephen Miller’s dismissal
    By Leslie Salzillo
    Feb 13, 2018

Last week, seventeen Jewish organizations penned an open letter and sent it to the White House calling for a dismissal of the far-right Senior Policy Advisor Stephen Miller. The letter claims Miller is guilty of “extreme viewpoints and advocacy of racist policies.” The protest was led by the National Council of Jewish Women. Here are excerpts:

“As Jews, we are in solidarity with immigrants and refugees and believe that our nation must be a refuge and welcoming home for new Americans,” they wrote. Miller “has been an obstacle to passing widely-supported, bipartisan, popular, badly-needed immigration policy changes throughout his time in the administration.”

Did Trump make up major GM manufacturing news?

    By Steve Benen
Donald Trump hosted a discussion on trade at the White House yesterday and decided to break some news about a development that seemed pretty important.

“I do want to tell you, we just got this notice: General Motors in Korea announces the first step in necessary restructuring. They’re going to – GM Korea company announced today that it will cease production and close its Gunsan plant in May of 2018, and they’re going to move back to Detroit.

“You don’t hear these things, except for the fact that Trump became president. Believe me, you wouldn’t be hearing that. So they’re moving back from Korea to Detroit…. General Motors is coming back into Detroit. That is a really significant statement.”

Well, maybe, though there’s reason for some skepticism about whether the “really significant statement” is true.

Dems are ‘winning elections in places where they shouldn’t be’
    02/14/18 08:40 AM—UPDATED 02/14/18 11:51 AM
    By Steve Benen

State Senate special elections don’t generally receive national attention, but yesterday’s race in Florida did. And as the Washington Post reported, it’s Democrats who are celebrating the results.

Democrats continued a streak of special election wins with a victory along the Gulf Coast of Florida on Tuesday, the 36th red-to-blue switch in a state legislative race since the 2016 election.

Democrat Margaret Good triumphed by seven points in the Sarasota-based 72nd District, defeating Republican candidate James Buchanan in an area that backed Donald Trump for president in 2016 by more than four points.

Philadelphia’s DA office keeps secret list of suspect police
    FEBRUARY 13, 2018 — 5:42 AM EST

The Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office last year secretly compiled a list of Philadelphia police officers with a history of lying, racial bias, or brutality, in a move to block them from testifying in court.

The confidential list of about two dozen was assembled by prosecutors on a special Police Misconduct Review Committee at the order of former District Attorney Seth Williams, sources familiar with the roster said. .

It was supposed to attack locally a national problem: police “testilying” — falsifying evidence, framing suspects, and lying about it in court.

The list has not been made public, but the sources said it included Reginald V. Graham, who in 2007 arrested the rapper Meek Mill, whose jailing for violating probation on those gun and drug charges has stirred widespread debate about the fairness of the criminal-justice system.
