Breaking News: Austin bomber kills himself with explosive device

CNN— A suspect in a wave of bombing attacks in Austin killed himself inside his car with an explosive device early Wednesday as authorities closed in, police said.

Since the bombings started on March 2, investigators frantically searched for clues, calling the attacks the work of a”serial bomber” who increasingly changed tactics. The bombings killed two people and left the Texas capital terrorized with fear for 19 days.

In the past 36 hours, law enforcement received information directing them to a person of interest, who ultimately became a suspect.

Surveillance teams tracked the suspect’s vehicle to a hotel in Round Rock, north of Austin. As police waited on tactical units, the vehicle left the hotel.

SWAT approached the vehicle and the suspect detonated a bomb, killing himself and injuring a SWAT member.

A SWAT officer fired his weapon at the suspect after an officer was knocked down by the blast. It’s unclear whether the officer shot the suspect.

The suspect is a 24-year-old white man, and authorities don’t know whether he acted alone or what his motive was.

He is responsible for all the incidents in Austin, Austin Police Chief Brian Manley said.

Who was Austin bomb suspect Mark Anthony Conditt? 2012 blog reveals views

Some of the answers came when police uncovered a recording Conditt made in which he provided details of the six package bombs he used against others and a seventh he used to kill himself. The recording, Austin Police Chief Brian Manley said, does not mention hate or terrorism but is “the outcry of a very challenged young man talking about challenges in his personal life.”

Neighbors said Conditt’s family appeared to be stable. His parents were involved in a multilevel marketing business and his father, an electrical engineer, ran an online computer business. Mark Conditt moved out of the family home a couple of years ago and into one a few blocks away that he bought with his father and where lived with roommates.

“I would describe them as an extremely nice family,” neighbor Jeff Reeb said.

“He seemed like a very normal kid, which is what everybody says or most neighbors say in this type of situation,” Reeb said. “But over the years there is nothing I can point to.”

“He’s not a psychopath,” he added. “Something broke him. Something broke him and I don’t know what that was.”

  3. A black roommate and bombing black people………..

  4. Mark Conditt has roommates. If they didn’t know anything about the bombs and the bombs weren’t made in the home, where did he built them? #AustinBombings

I expected them to make this claim, but they are responsible because they passed their views on government and social issues on to him as they were raising him and home-schooling him. The things he said about guns, LGBTQ persons, child molesters, pedophiles, etc. had to come from somewhere. His early socialization occurred in their home. They can try to deny their role in creating this monster, but he was/is their monster.

  5. Police are evacuating residents around Mark Conditt’s home from a 4 to 6 block radius……….

  6. Liza says:

The picture of the Conditt came from his mother’s Facebook post which is still, at least for now, accessible. She posted this with the picture:

I officially graduated Mark from High School on Friday. 1 down, 3 to go. He has 30 hrs of college credit too, but he’s thinking of taking some time to figure out what he wants to do….maybe a mission trip. Thanks to everyone for your support over the years.

    • Liza says:

Well, I guess he figured out what he wanted to do. Become a terrorist and kill people.

So, a “mission trip”? I wonder if they were Evangelical Christians.

And he was home schooled apparently.

  7. Liza says:

SG2, thanks for the comprehensive reporting on all of this.

I hope that this is the end of this, and that anyone else involved is quickly apprehended.

    Hang in there.

  8. #AustinBombings #MarkAnthonyConditt was unemployed. Who financed his bomb making materials. Where did he learn how to make a bomb? Who radicalized this terrorist?
