It doesn’t just say that they will no longer collect this information.
THEY ARE GOING TO DELETE THE DATABASE CONTAINING THE INFORMATION ALREADY COLLECTED.

Treasury Department
@USTreasury
Aug 11
Today, @FinCENnews issued a final rule that permanently removes the requirement for U.S. companies and U.S. persons to report beneficial ownership information. FinCEN today also announced that it will delete previously reported information by U.S. persons .

Tom Malinowski
@Malinowski

I helped pass this law in 2020. It’s purpose is to prevent drug traffickers, Russian & Chinese kleptocrats, and other international criminals from setting up anonymously owned companies to hide their money in the US. Trump’s Treasury Dept. is doing this to help criminals. 1/

Tom Malinowski
@Malinowski
18h

“Beneficial ownership information” is just a record of who actually owns a company. That’s all that was being reported here, so that we didn’t have LLCs in Delaware laundering millions of dollars through the US and into offshore banks on behalf of totally anonymous people. 2/

Tom Malinowski
@Malinowski
18h

Treasury deleting the beneficial ownership info it already gathered is utterly crazy. This database was not public — it was just for law enforcement to use in investigating crimes. It’s like Trump ordering the deletion of the FBI’s fingerprint database. 3/

Tom Malinowski
@Malinowski
18h

Why is the Trump administration doing this? I don’t know. But it’s certainly good news for rich Russians who want to buy his condos, or Gulf royals buying his fake crypto. The true identities of people he’s done business with, if registered with Treasury, will now be deleted. 4/

Tom Malinowski
@Malinowski

Last but not least, this is totally illegal!

Congress passed a law — with strong Republican support BTW — saying Treasury had to collect and keep beneficial ownership info. The Trump administration cannot say “we’re just not going to do it.” 5/

This will find its way to court. It will be struck down.

But the deletion of data currently available to law enforcement may be irreversible.

It’s one of the most lawless and corrupt things this administration has done, and that’s saying a lot.

Casey Michel
@cjcmichel

The Trump administration just made it official: it’s demolishing the US’s shell company registry, and destroying all of the data it already collected.

A disaster for US anti-corruption efforts.

Casey Michel
@cjcmichel
Aug 12

Creating this new shell company registry a couple years ago was the single-greatest anti-corruption step the US had taken in decades.

The Trump administration demolishing the registry is arguably the single-greatest pro-corruption step we’ve also seen in decades.

Casey Michel
@cjcmichel
Aug 12

And it’s not just Trump. Republican allies in Congress are trying to overturn the entire legislation that created the US’s shell company registry—and make it effectively impossible for a future administration to restore it.

Casey Michel
@cjcmichel
Aug 12

This is why so many “crime is down” headlines are so tone-deaf.

We’re currently living through the golden age of white-collar crime—and it’s only going to get worse.

    Yes the potential is very much there but it must be cultivated and mobilized. It’s foolish for Dems to believe it’s going to be truly fully realized without serious organization, mobilizing efforts & resources to do the job. Dare I say anything less is to take Black voters for granted at best, at worst it’s disrespectful. Let’s see if the resources for a broader & deeper mobilization effort is undertaken soon before cynicism robs us of the opportunity to close the turnout gap 👀

    The EEOC’s workforce data has helped researchers, civil-rights advocates, and policymakers identify racial disparities in America’s workplaces for decades.

    Now, civil-rights groups are warning that ending this long-standing reporting requirement could make it harder to see discrimination, track disparities in hiring and promotions, and hold employers accountable.

    And when the election is over they will get on camera and tell you that they would do it again if given a chance the next time this is Senate seat is up again in a gubernatorial year, 2038…

    Roy Cooper, the Democrat with the highest polling lead in the country in a swing state (+13) is flooding TV and online with ads explicitly about prosecuting criminals and opposing defund police lunatics. This is what voters everywhere want. It’s not complicated.

    Yes,

    Quite obvious that those laws were never written with Black people in mind. Haven’t seen one instance where a Black person has successfully used them for their defense.

    This case proves that Black people don’t have the right to “stand their ground” in Florida. slate.trib.al/hUNV1x2
    The same legal system that exonerates white aggression concluded Byrd & Roberts went from lawful self-defense to criminal premeditation in the span of 26 seconds.

    The logical conclusion of the mob trying to hound Jasmine Crockett out of politics is that they don’t want Black politicians to run unless they swear fealty to DSA or Our Revolution.

    Thats the real issue.

    They don’t want anymore “unsanctioned” Negroes in the party.

    Black voters in Detroit are about to be blamed for AES’ lagging numbers with Michigan’s whites

    meanwhile, DSA who don’t live in Michigan are prepared to blame “AIPAC” & the phantom of “Islamophobia.”

    The Islamophobia exists among Republicans; AES might be ahead w/o DSA backing.

    She’s lying. Trump ripped up Obama’s Iran nuclear deal after intelligence officials warned him the only way out would be a war with Iran. Everyone who voted for Trump knew a war with Iran was inevitable when they picked him.

    Dems may put up a historic showing in southern Senate races this year & their majority may run through the south.

    Ossoff (GA) & Cooper (NC) are clearly ahead. Talarico is +2…

    If all that were right on, Dems would win more southern Senate races than any midterm in the 2000s!

    Colorado is about to have a generational change in its Senate delegation in 2030 & 2032; the only issue remaining is whether or not DSA will intervene and fuck everything up when the Millennials take over.

    Once again, stop pretending that Rogers lost last time by 10 Percentage Points.
    He lost by 10,000 votes, which is absolutely nothing in a state like Michigan.

    @GregTSargent

    Fox poll has Abdul El-Sayed behind by 47-51. He’s only at 75% w/blacks and badly losing noncollege whites (38-61) and noncollege overall (44-54)

    Trump approval in MI: 41-58

    Bears out what @RonBrownstein and I said on AES need to win Trump disapprovers:

    According to Fox we are getting:

    D+13 Georgia, D+4 Iowa, D+3 Texas, D+8 Ohio, and D+9 North Carolina.

    But also D+2 Maine and R+4 Michigan…?

    ayysiegs
    @AyySiegs

    This is extremely easy to understand. walk with me

    Georgia: Ossoff is a powerhouse
    Iowa: Turek has a record of public service to run on + popular Gov candidate
    Texas: the Republican in the race let a pedophile off easy
    Ohio: Recently defeated US Senator with wide name recognition in an environment that’s hostile to republicans
    North Carolina: Roy Cooper, popular former Governor also running in a year the generic ballot is bad for R’s
    Maine: they got an actual working class guy who isn’t a nazi rapist

    Michigan: Dem candidate pals around with outright terrorist supporter, and the candidate himself tried to ‘both sides’ a foiled plot to kill 150 Jewish children

    makes total sense.

    For years, Shonda Lemon had delivered mail to the same 89-year-old woman in Chicago.

    Her name was Helen Iwanski, and she lived alone.

    Shonda knew some of Helen’s little routines. She knew Helen didn’t travel often. She knew she normally collected her mail. And because Helen sometimes struggled to grip it, Shonda would bundle her letters together with rubber bands to make them easier to pick up.

    Helen had a little routine of her own.

    Every now and then, she would tape pieces of candy to her outgoing mail for Shonda to find.

    Then, in January 2021, something changed.

    Shonda delivered Helen’s mail, but the previous bundle was still there.

    The next day, it hadn’t moved.

    By the third day, several bundles of mail were sitting untouched. Packages had been left outside overnight too.

    Someone unfamiliar with the house might have simply assumed Helen was away.

    Shonda knew better.

    Helen lived alone, had no children and hadn’t traveled in years. Three days of untouched mail didn’t make sense.

    So Shonda called for a welfare check.

    Chicago police arrived within minutes and entered Helen’s home.

    Inside, they found her on the floor.

    Helen had fallen approximately three days earlier and had been unable to get back up or call for help. At 89 years old, she had spent those days without food or water.

    But she was still alive.

    Helen was rushed to the hospital and later continued her recovery at a rehabilitation facility.

    When police called Shonda with the news, the first thing they told her was that Helen was alive.

    Shonda began to cry.

    She was later honored by the Chicago Police Department, while Helen and her family credited the mail carrier’s attention and concern with saving her life.

    There hadn’t been an alarm or an emergency call to tell Shonda something was wrong.

    There were just a few bundles of mail sitting exactly where she had left them.

    Shonda noticed because she hadn’t spent four years simply delivering mail to Helen’s house.

    She had spent four years paying attention to the person who lived there.

    I just spoke to my neighbor. He got laid off 8-9 months ago and, at 59 years old, he’s unable to find a new job. No one will even call him back.

    His company stops paying in October. ACA marketplace plans cost $2500/mo.

    Several neighbors in this position.

    It’s tough to find a job in your 50s.

    It happened to my husband at that age. He had always worked in Corp America. He ended up taking a job at Trader Joe’s and was never happier. He worked there 12 years until his retirement. You sometimes have to think about another sector.

    45 and on. Good luck. You’re aged out of most jobs. If you have a job at that age range, don’t quit or leave.

    You won’t get another job.
