Celebrating Forever FLOTUS

Our faithful poster eliihass asked for this post about our lovely Former First Lady, Michelle Obama.

Yesterday, read an article that said that the Obamas were becoming a Billion Dollar Brand.

Here were eliihass’ thoughts on it:

All these insidious articles about how much money they’re ‘raking in’, is meant to turn people against them, and dampen enthusiasm for them and their initiatives.. convince people not to support or buy their books or attend their events …cast aspersions on their person, their integrity …and cast them as ‘cashing in’ and only to be ‘obscenely wealthy’..

It’s all malicious.. and spiteful …and very dishonestly, fails to most importantly, provide any real context .. which if the gossipy stenographers did, would only make the Obamas even more admirable for their high ethics, integrity, honesty …and people powered and people invested efforts..

I don’t disagree with one word that eliihass says. My thoughts on why the haterz are seething:

Why the haterz are crying those delicious tears over Forever FLOTUS 😍 😍

They are mad for so many reasons
1. Forever FLOTUS 😍😍 getting that huge advance.
2. They wanted it to be a flop.
3. Forever FLOTUS 😍😍 is selling out ATHLETIC ARENAS.
4. Forever FLOTUS 😍 😍 continues to de-age.
5. Her successor is every bit the international embarrassment as her husband.😋😋😋
6. They are also mad that WE can use our financial power to support 44 and Forever FLOTUS, and that we do so without hesitation.

You have Forever FLOTUS selling merchandise, the profits of which will help fund causes that she believes in. And, when you hear that, you go, ‘ of course’.
While the other side is LITERALLY using the Presidency to ENRICH THEMSELVES (Emoluments Clause), here you have 44 and Forever FLOTUS continue to be the light and show the way, and the contrast couldn’t be more obvious. …

Their vessels for White Supremacy are shallow, hollow, ugly, inside and out, and it’s obvious to the world.
THEY will NEVER be able to compare positively with 44 and Forever FLOTUS.
They know it.
We know it.

44 and Forever FLOTUS are just beginning to write the next chapter of their lives, and it’s going to be amazing, the legacy that they will leave. They will reshape what post-Presidency looks like.

I got the “Becoming” book on CD Saturday. I wrapped it up and placed it under my tree.

I want to open it Christmas morning, with the child-like wonder and dance with GLEE!

BTW, Still savoring my copy in hardcover.

You know everyone I know is getting a 1st edition/1st print copy of Becoming this holiday. My pre-ordered copies are stacked neatly in their boxes waiting for to be gift-wrapped for every last person I know …even if they already have a copy ..😂

I’ve already read mine twice, Sis ..and listened to her narrate on Audible twice too.. I’ve been traveling for work and just got home… Nothing more satisfying than seeing people of every stripe buying and reading my historic FLOTUS’ memoir – translated into 31 languages … And have it flying off the shelves …and stores at various airports in Europe running out of copies in every language ..And complete strangers – men and women, not just gushing about it and her, but having earnest human conversations about and around it..

I was so just so proud …

Can I please ask a favor .. When you have a moment, can you or Rik, or SG please, please, open up another thread for me using this her absolutely heart-tugging “Note to Self” CBS video as the header for it..

      Thank you..

thanks so much, Eliihaas, for posting all these wonderful Instagram photos & comments.

WE LOVE FLOTUS! She’s coming to St. Paul in March, however, I will not be in town for her visit.

    • eliihass says:

The pleasure’s been all mine, Sis.. There’s really not much I’d rather be doing than positively sharing as much as I can and when time permits, what I find on my phenomenal historic FLOTUS on her book tour promoting her fantastic bestselling memoir..

      • Ametia says:

“Becoming” is the NUMBER ONE selling book of the year.

Michelle Obama is the first Black woman to hold that honor and 2nd woman, J.K. Rowling being the first woman

Michelle Obama is the first FIRST LADY of the USA to have a best selling book of the YEAR!!!!!!

        • eliihass says:

So well-deserved.. That people of every stripe can read it and not only relate, but see some part of their story in her memoir, has to be part of the draw and power of the book.. Also, that it’s so well done…and so refreshingly unpretentious and honest for a woman of her stature in the world – as far as non-Americans are concerned…Her humility, grace and generosity.. only made it even more beautiful..

As someone who’s followed her very closely, it was funny to see how she handled some of the insidiously awful folks I despised.. She largely relegated them to the nameless column – essentially de-emphasized them and their sense of importance …or referred to them by their general office assignment… And as incredibly generous as she was in the book – far more than I could ever be, if you followed all these years, it was easy to tell who she liked, who she obligatorily included, or preemptively neutralized by antiseptically including …confirmed who she had no use for, and who she appreciated.. I was glad to find that my spidey senses were absolutely spot on all along.. I like that she told her story in such a way that she took control and power over her story – so that she essentially killed any future stabs by opportunists and malicious folk to try to smear or redefine her..

“…It was such an honour sitting down with Michelle Obama to chat about her new book Becoming, where she has bared her soul and shared her life in incredible detail.

Michelle really is the most phenomenal storyteller and from the very first chapter I felt like I was there with her living her life story, especially as I was listening on audiobook with Michelle’s voice recounting the details. It was so enthralling and staggeringly honest. I’m not the only one who has loved it – Becoming has taken the title of 2018’s best seller – selling over 2 million copies in the US in just two weeks.

In our interview she reveals how her upbringing had a profound impact in shaping the person that she is today – a powerful woman with a powerful voice.

Michelle trained as a lawyer before deciding to leave law (and take a huge pay cut) and go and work at City Hall, before becoming a director of a variety of not-for-profits. She said we need to be more open to not beating ourselves up if we feel that we haven’t made the right first choice – because “life is long and we can have many lives within a life”.

A quote in her book really stuck with me, and that is “Work with purpose, parent with care”. Being on the Leadership Team at Virgin, I had to ask her about the role that purpose can play in business. She told me how as First Lady, she encouraged the ‘Let’s Move’ child nutrition bill and encouraged businesses to employ veterans. She was driven by purpose and learned how to get her voice heard with the maximum impact.

She said: “Corporations are citizens of the world in the same way individuals are. I know that that’s not necessarily how the free market works but that’s how businesses of old used to work… I wish that businesses still had that sense of fiduciary responsibility to the broader society and I think we need more leaders who think that way as well. We are in a time when you have to tie purpose to the bottom line.”

“…NEW YORK Michelle Obama’s “Becoming” has become a massive hit.

Crown Publishing told The Associated Press on Wednesday that the former first lady’s memoir has sold more than 1.4 million copies in print and digital formats in the U.S. and Canada in the seven days since it was released Nov. 13.

Based on demand from retailers across all channels, the publisher has printed 3 million hardcover copies in North America.

“Becoming” is currently the No. 1 adult nonfiction title in the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Holland, Spain, Denmark and Finland. In Germany, some 200,000 copies have been sold, prompting a second printing of 100,000 copies.

In the United Kingdom, “Becoming” is published by Viking and it has had five press runs with a total of 575,000 copies in print.

In Holland, the Dutch-language edition is the best-selling book in the Netherlands, with the English-language edition ranked second…”

So, several folk are posting variations of this all over social media… Turns out that some independent/Airport stores are claiming that the copies of “Becoming” they have in stock, aren’t scanning when they ‘try’ to ‘ring up’ the purchase …and they are instead scanning treasonous buffoon’s book in its place when one purchases my historic FLOTUS’ bestselling book.. So much shenanigans …

“…Please read. “Upset like a mug – So I just went to the ATL Market in D Concourse at Hartsfield Jackson Atlanta Airport and was gonna purchase the Michelle Obama Book “Becoming” for my daughter. I asked the cashier how much it was and she said it’s $32 but it’s not scanning so they have to scan it under Trumps book for $20. I said Noooo you can’t do that, that makes it look like his book his selling more than hers and that your management needs to fix that. It was more upsetting because the two young ladies were black and didn’t get it. I told them that this happens with the movies as well and to please let someone know.. 🤦🏾‍♂️. So if you purchase this book make sure to check your receipt..”

“..Were there any rooms in the White House that you weren’t allowed into? Why not?
Otis Barkey and Aston Barnes, both 10, Abel Smith primary school, Hertford

I love the way you think! The White House was our daughters’ home for most of their childhood. They lived there longer than any other house we’ve lived in. And I wanted to make sure that they felt like we lived in a home, not a museum. So it was important to me that we could go wherever we wanted in the White House – no restrictions!

I’m running a campaign to tackle gender inequality in London called #BehindEveryGreatCity, and I know how important female role models are when it comes to inspiring girls. Who are your role models, and why?

That list begins with my mother, certainly. Sometimes we all make life too complicated, but she’s someone who’s always known what’s right and what’s wrong, and she lives her life accordingly. My mother has always been a clear barometer for me. She has a no-nonsense wisdom about her, and she also doesn’t take herself too seriously, which I think is important. You’ve got to be able to laugh at yourself.

There’s also my great-aunt Robbie, whom I write about in the beginning of my memoir. Our family lived in a very small apartment on the second floor of her house when I was growing up. She was a schoolteacher who directed a church choir and taught the neighborhood kids piano lessons, including me. She was a bit of a taskmaster, very finickety in the way she taught piano, and we butted heads from time to time, but there was a warmth and love that flowed beneath everything. I loved her independence, her strength and her compassion. She was a big part of my support structure in those formative years.

I also adored my grandmother LaVaughn Robinson, my father’s mother, from whom I got my middle name. Dutiful in her prayers and churchgoing, she was a quiet presence, with a very soft and sweet voice. She never yelled, or even spoke very sternly. As a little girl, I also had the opportunity to see her at the Bible bookstore she managed, running the place with precision, making sure the whole operation was humming. She carried herself with this wonderful mix of grace and confidence. She was one of the first professional women I could look up to – a woman who knew what was going on.

Of course, I also look up to all the greats – Harriet Tubman, Maya Angelou, Rosa Parks, Oprah, Marian Wright Edelman and so many others. But to me, the people who impact you are the people that you know. It’s good to take cues from the history books, but if you want to learn how to live your life, I hope there’s someone close to you who can be a good model.

The way I’ve always thought about it is: if I can reflect the wisdom of my mother, the independence of my great-aunt and the quiet confidence of my grandmother while still forging my own path, then I’ll be doing pretty well.

What’s the one moment you wish you could freeze in time?

I’m not one for a lot of nostalgia, honestly. I don’t spend a lot of time looking back or pining for what used to be. But that doesn’t mean I wouldn’t mind revisiting that summer when I first met Barack. It was magic. My father was still with us. I was living back home in Chicago and was exploring the world as a young professional. And then, this brilliant summer associate shows up, slowly chipping away at my defenses and eventually winning me over with his perspective, his grounded nature, his sense of humor. And oh, that smile…”
