    The cop has no business being a dog handler. He’ll end up killing the dog. I strongly suspect that a lot of these K-9 dogs suffer in this and similar ways.

    Guests at the black tie dinner will dine on on fresh burrata cheese with heritage tomatoes, basil, and Maldon salt; grilled fillet of beef with pommes Anna, watercress pure, celeriac and chantenay carrots; followed by summer berries, homemade vanilla ice cream with Muscovado sugar tuile.

    The wines will come from the Iron Horse winery in northern California: a chardonnay with the starter, a pinot noir with the main course, and champagne with dessert.

    The menu, selected by the First Lady, will be sure to please her husband, a man of famously plain tastes who can regularly be seen dining on fast food.

    Though no doubt sourced from the finest ingredients and prepared by the finest chefs, the meal amounts to beef and potatoes followed by vanillla ice cream.

    Trump pushes up to 20 years in prison for pipeline protesters
    The criminalization of pipeline opposition is ramping up.

    The Trump administration is seeking to dramatically escalate federal penalties for pipeline protesters. Under newly proposed changes, pipeline protesters could face up to 20 years in prison for disrupting the construction of oil and gas infrastructure. The move echoes similarly harsh penalties for anti-pipeline activists being adopted in several states.

    Updates proposed to the Transportation Department’s Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) released Monday would make interrupting pipeline construction or damaging existing pipelines a federal crime.

    According to the proposed PHMSA updates, first reported by Politico, “vandalism, tampering with, or impeding, disrupting or inhibiting the operation of” pipelines would be met with fines or potentially many years in jail. Under current law, damaging existing pipelines can lead to up to 20 years jail time, but those “under construction” are now a consideration as well along with “disruption” to pipelines.

    Other components of the PHMSA updates include changing the threshold for damages incurred by a pipeline accident before an operator is required to report a problem; the proposal would double the $100,000 threshold currently in place.

      I cannot stand Chris Matthews. I don’t like his authoritarian attitude. He’s nowhere near as smart as he thinks he is, cranking out book after book, after book about history he clearly doesn’t understand. I have several degrees in history His biography shows he has none. At one time, he had his head so far up Trump’s @ss that he couldn’t take a breath. I don’t want to hear one word from him because he’s a biased, bigoted, racist mthfkr who gave PBO a hard time because he dared to be POTUS while being black. Anything with Chris Matthews in it, I will not watch.

    Since Leah Chase died on Saturday at age 96, there has been an outpouring of admiration and affection for the beloved chef from public officials, celebrities and countless regular folks on social media.

    On Monday evening, New Orleans took its testimonial of gratitude to the streets with a second-line parade in her honor.

    The parade — part march, part rolling block party — was organized by members of the Big 6 Brass Band. It convened in front of Dooky Chase’s Restaurant on Orleans Avenue, which Chase and her family built into a landmark of Creole cuisine.

    Neighbors came outside to watch, children climbed a low brick wall to peer from its top, and men and women shimmied between parked cars, hopping from street to sidewalk and up onto the stoops of shotgun houses to dance.

    The US government has spent millions of dollars on luxury hotel suites, chauffeured vehicles and back-up generators for Donald Trump’s state visit to London. Contracts placed by the state department show US taxpayers have spent $1,223,230 (£965,921) on VIP accommodation at the InterContinental hotel on Park Lane in Mayfair, a hotel linked to members of the Qatari royal family. A further $339,386 (£267,994) has been spent on “hotel rooms in support of a visit” at the Hilton on Park Lane, one of London’s most exclusive addresses, and also on “passenger car rental”.

    Along with his third wife, Melania, Trump has brought all four of his adult children on the trip – Donald Jr, Eric, Ivanka and Tiffany. Along with their administrative support and security details, that has added significantly to the size of his entourage.

    The state department placed a series of hotel contracts, first disclosed by the Scotsman newspaper, through the US embassy in London, including another $122,059 and then $32,339 for additional hotel rooms at the Intercontinental. Hundreds of thousands of dollars have been spent at the Hyatt Regency – the Churchill, a hotel on Portman Square. That includes $18,750 on “hotel rooms in support of a VIP visit”, as well as $47,311 for a generator, presumably to provide back-up power supplies for official business. At the Grosvenor House hotel, another five-star hotel on Park Lane, the state department has spent at least $266,882 on “hotel rooms for VIP visit” and installing special voice and data cabling in the hotel suites. At the Cumberland hotel on Great Cumberland Place, a four-star hotel near Marble Arch now rebranded as the Hard Rock hotel, $96,162 has again been spent on a contract the state department describes as “hotel rooms in support of a VIP visit”. That hotel is at the northern end of Park Lane, within easy reach of the Intercontinental and the Grosvenor House hotels.

    Alongside these one-off contracts, the US embassy also has a long-running contract for luxury chauffeured limousines with Tristar Cars, a firm owned by the London-based private hire firm Addison Lee. The embassy placed its largest recent contract with Tristar Cars on 20 May this year, for $353,070, a one-off purchase that state department records show was linked to hotel accommodation.

    The Scotsman reports that the Intercontinental is ultimately owned by a Luxembourg-based hotel group called Regis Hotel (Opco) UK SA. Among its directors are Sheikha Lulwah bint Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani, 34, the daughter of Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani, previously Qatar’s ruler until he abdicated in 2013. He founded and funded the al-Jazeera global television network.
