Thursday Open Thread | 12 Black Elected Officials In Charlotte Receive Trump Inspired Racist Letters

At least 12 local elected officials, including black county commissioners, Charlotte City Council members who are people of color, and the black chair of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools board, received similar letters in recent days, according to representatives of those bodies. The letter, which the Observer obtained a copy of from a City Council member, is also addressed to the local police and fire departments.

The letter to Leake invoked the name of President Donald Trump, said blacks need to “assimilate” to Charlotte and the United States and blamed “twisted media” for problems.

“Nothing good will come to you if you don’t change,” the letter to Leake and other commissioners stated. “You need to go back to where you came from … Your freedom was born on the backs of great Americans, white Americans, who fought for you, so get over it. Assimilate.

“One of these days, someone … will round you up. All of you. And send you screaming to the concentration camps where you belong … Be very careful.”

A Mecklenburg County commissioner says she has asked the FBI to investigate who sent her and other black elected officials a racist, threatening letter that said “Black Democrats should be tarred and feathered and run out of town” and sent “screaming to the concentration camps.”

The letter, which Commissioner Vilma Leake read aloud at a recent public meeting, was received by mail at her county office address. It is a nearly two-page-long rant that threatens “someone” may “blow up” a statue of Martin Luther King, Jr., and also says, “I would love it if they would blow you up.”

Planned Parenthood sets exit from federal family planning program

Raising the stakes in an ideologically charged standoff over women’s health, Planned Parenthood said today it will soon leave the federal family planning program unless a court puts a hold on Trump administration rules that bar clinics from referring patients for abortions.

The administration responded that it is ready to operate the Title X family planning program without the organization that has been the largest provider. About 4 million women are served nationwide under the program, which distributes $260 million in grants to clinics. It’s unclear how many patients would be affected.

Planned Parenthood spokeswoman Erica Sackin said that its affiliated clinics “will be formally out of the Title X program” by Monday, passing up federal funding, unless the full 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco halts the new rules. The appeals court is weighing a lawsuit by Planned Parenthood and others to overturn the rules; a panel of judges in effect had earlier allowed the administration to go ahead with enforcement.

We can see what happened when they did this on a state level- in Texas:

“In 2011, Republican lawmakers slashed the state’s family planning budget by two-thirds, shuttering 82 clinics. Two years later, they kicked Planned Parenthood and other abortion provider affiliates out of the state’s low-income women’s health program, forgoing millions in federal dollars to begin a state-funded program instead. At the time, less than a quarter of the estimated 1.8 million poor Texas women in need of publicly funded contraceptive services were getting them. The cuts resulted in tens of thousands more women losing access to reproductive health services like gynecological exams, birth control, cancer screenings and STD testing.”

A lot of women will be hurt. Abortion is but THREE PERCENT of what Planned Parenthood does – AND, they can’t get any federal money for it.
So, the women that use the other 97% of its offered services are going to be hit by this.

Republicans believe black people don’t have actual political agency. They see them only as rank and file voters in the Democratic Party which is not true. It just isn’t true and it hasn’t been true my entire life. Media have adopted this belief, so you see ridiculous things like the NY Times going to Youngstown, ignoring the mayor and the city council, and heading out to interview the (white) COUNTY chair. They simply will not admit there is AA political power within the Democratic Party at the elected and appointed level. They could see it- they could go to Columbus or Cleveland and talk to AA electeds and D Party leaders, but they won’t. Because white people are the only people with political power, even when they’re not.
