I didn’t learn about Juneteenth in school. It was an Elder in the church, who grew up in Texas, that taught me about Juneteenth as a child.
You will not disrespect nor denigrate the work of activists of many years.
You will not diminish this by bringing all the other issues that need to be fixed.
You will not dampen the joy of this victory.
Happy Juneteenth!
#Juneteenth, now a federal holiday, marks the day in 1865 that word of freedom reached enslaved people in Texas. A celebration of liberty steeped in African American traditions, it is also an opportunity for all of us to renew our commitment to the pursuit of freedom and justice.

I'm glad that Juneteenth is a federal holiday. Ms. Opal Lee got to see her effort rewarded at age 94. White supremacists burned her family home down on Juneteenth in 1939. She fought for this. https://t.co/b00BD0vRgV pic.twitter.com/qiR2sG0xIf

Today, I had the honor of signing a bill to officially make Juneteenth a federal holiday. With this important step, all Americans can feel the power of the day, learn from our history, celebrate our progress, and grapple with the distance we still have to travel. pic.twitter.com/UN5WgCiAy2

If you can't say the Juneteenth holiday doesn't mean anything to the grandmother of Juneteenth Ms. Opal Lee.
Then don't say anything at all.
Just don't.
EVERYTHING is worth fighting for. EVERYTHING. #JuneTeenth2021 #msOpalLee #OpalLee pic.twitter.com/Qq5nN1v21i

Here is the video of Ms. Opal Lee on Cuomo. I will sleep well knowing she had the best day and also honor her request to celebrate Juneteenth from June 19th until July 4th.https://t.co/c9dkhYIDNm https://t.co/qX0ZF7FZ97

“Juneteenth—with tears in my eyes when I made that gavel—shows America and shows the world that we can accept our differences and we can establish what freedom is all about,” says Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee on Juneteenth becoming a federal holiday. https://t.co/HWwmC05OH8

Y'all do not have to celebrate a holiday if y'all don't want to, but if you think you can do better than John Conyers, MLK Jr and others, go for it. They aren't above critique and when you lead, you aren't either.

If #Juneteenth being a holiday is not important to you…that's fine. Slow clap 👏🏾…👏🏾…👏🏾 for you. But it is important to some people so let them be great for a day. Roland asked for my response to the social media backlash so here it is. 🤷🏾♀️#RolandMartinUnfiltered pic.twitter.com/AMMdY6tVby

To those trying to diminish this historic day, you can’t honestly say Juneteenth becoming a holiday means nothing. It means something whether you acknowledge it or not.
