    Colin Powell was the first black man I ever saw as a General when I was little. I mean three to four years old little. I have never grown up thinking that our black men couldn’t be more than just a private in the U.S. Army. He was the reason why I had two uncles fight in the Persian-Gulf War. Seeing him, in command, having his advice and counsel taken seriously by white men was amazing. We could get into the weeds about Iraq and Afghanistan and how he aided in getting us in, but I’m always perplexed by people who have more heat for him, President Biden, Secretary Clinton, over George W. Bush and Dick Cheney. Hell, we’ve seen more anger at Forever FLOTUS Michelle Obama for just hugging the motherfucker. Yeah, folks are more angry at Democrats and folks that actually endorsed Democrats over a 12 year period over those two. Ain’t it uncanny?

    Maybe people don’t want to hear apologies about it, but he’s basically the only one of prominence from the Bush/Cheney administration who did. He also did this in 2008.

    When Colin Powell endorsed then Senator Barack Obama –

    This was THE most important endorsement. This woke enough of white America up and said, ok, we will vote for this man to be our commander in chief. I also loved that he talked about the late Corporal Kareem Rashad Sultan Khan, who valiantly gave his life for his country, showing that so many of us love this country, in spite of it sometimes not loving us back. Some might be surprised at some black Americans saying a prayer, shedding a tear and mourning the General. Yes, Colin Powell was a Republican, but unlike so many of the black Republicans standing today, he never shied away from his blackness, nor did he feel embarrassed by it, that being black was a blessing, not a curse and that it was a part of him and that his political beliefs did not come first before that. He supported Republican Presidents, but did not worship them or believe them infallible, nor did he believe himself as infallible. He was man enough to say he was wrong, when he knew his own party would revile him. I actually admire that quality and wish so many of his party members had it. Maybe it would make them more likable, more competitive, more American.

    Rest in Peace, General Powell.

    I am looking for the clip about Corporal Khan. I cry everytime that I see that clip.

    RIP Colin Powell.

    The man was a groundbreaking figure. First black National Security Advisor, first black Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, first black Secretary of State. He broke some serious barriers and he was a staunch advocate for civil rights and equality. He was a black republican of the old school (which doesn’t really exist anymore) in the mold of another groundbreaking black figure Edward Brooke. His biggest mistake and regret was going along with the UN presentation for war in Iraq in 2003 which was drawn up by Dick Cheney and other Iraq/Saddam obsessed advisors in the W Bush administration, and filled with a lot of old and not credible intelligence. He didn’t believe that the planned Iraq invasion in 2003 made strategic sense and that it could come back to bite the country. He was a pragmatist when it came to foreign policy and he fit in well with the Bush Sr. foreign policy inner circle which had like minded people like Brent Scowcroft.

    The thing about Powell is that he always stood up for the black community and never tried to attack or demean the black community. He wasn’t afraid to talk about racism and call it out, and he honestly cared about improving the black community. He was a proud black man who served this country with honor. He will be missed. When I heard the news it felt like losing an uncle in my family. That’s how much of a big deal Colin Powell was.

    Yeah….I’m not going to be in any mood to debate Colin Powell’s legacy. I get Iraq and all that but I respected the General. A good man who carried himself with the respect and dignity that today’s Republicans wish they had. I didn’t have to agree with everything he did. RIP.
