Is it everything that I want?
No.
But, will I disregard it?
No.
It’s a big deal and covers much more than I thought the GOP Senators would agree to. I didn’t think they’d sign on to more than red flag laws. pic.twitter.com/ORiIaRtPyg

🚨NEWS: We have a deal. Today a bipartisan group of 20 Senators (10 D and 10 R) is announcing a breakthrough agreement on gun violence – the first in 30 years – that will save lives.
I think you’ll be surprised at the scope of our framework.
1/ Here’s what it includes:
— Chris Murphy (@ChrisMurphyCT) June 12, 2022
3/ Billions in new funding for mental health and school safety, including money for the national build out of community mental health clinics.
— Chris Murphy (@ChrisMurphyCT) June 12, 2022
5/ First ever federal law against gun trafficking and straw purchasing. This will be a difference making tool to stop the flow of illegal guns into cities.
— Chris Murphy (@ChrisMurphyCT) June 12, 2022
for not getting ALL the #GunReform Legislation in 1 bite. The Filibuster is your enemy, not all the Dems. Get that Senate Majority LARGER and then we can have more #guncontrol. You know there are 50 GOP Senators + 2 Dem senators stopping our progress. #53PickUp 2/2

Right now, if you commit domestic abuse against your wife, you can’t get a gun. If you do it to your girlfriend, you can.
That’s outrageous — and that's why I lead the bill to close this "boyfriend loophole." We need to pass it now. pic.twitter.com/ykS25noIAM

The expanded background checks for 18-21 would’ve prevented Buffalo, Parkland and Uvalde.

No bigger or better advocate for sensible gun and weapons laws than Fred. If he supports this, and he does, that is a good sign it is the right step https://t.co/ytw7areFhS

For all those who say this Gun Bill isn't enough…. Imagine if African Americans said fuck it and gave up after this was all they could get in 1957…..
They kept scrapping and got the man who watered the 1957 bill down next to nothing to sign a better Bill in 1964. pic.twitter.com/mz5grfsyF7

The senate’s new gun safety deal closes the “boyfriend loophole,” finally. This was part of the original VAWA and senators were unable to come to an agreement on adding it back once VAWA expired. This is a huge fucking deal!!

I expected to get no deal so I am fine with getting something. The bar is low we have a 50-50 Senate. To the Dem Senator on the bipartisan who fought to get the “boyfriend loophole” included thank you.
Complaining will get us nothing better.

Gun safety measures like red flag laws and more background checks for those under 21 are important measures to support. I look forward to reviewing the full text of this proposal and working to improve gun safety at the federal level.

If this gun bill passes, it will be the second major bipartisan bill passed under President Biden, and it will save lives. Certain people are mad because his poll numbers will go up, that’s the only reason. Given our slim majorities, what POTUS has gotten done is beyond historic.

Dems: We did something that hasn't been done in 30 years.
Do something twitter: Not that. So what. That's not a big deal. Whatever. That's not what we meant. Also, we won't vote in midterms and we don't support president or VP.

So I've seen a lot of "not enough" bitching about the framework for the gun control bill. I've been in Child Protection for 28 years. Let me tell you why the ending the boyfriend loophole saves lives. 1/
— Patrick (@QuadCityPat) June 14, 2022
DV or more appropriately IPV Has a last effect on children. You don't have to be CPS to understand this. Fortunately I've only had a few cases where a mother was injured or murdered in an IPV incident with a gun 3/
— Patrick (@QuadCityPat) June 14, 2022
So ending the Boyfriend exception, saves lives. Reduces kids being exposed to violence and makes my job easier. After 28 years in the shit, anything that makes my job a smidge easier and helps women and kids is a win 5/5

🤢🤕🥴😏..
“..Herschel Walker, the Republican nominee for Senate from Georgia, who has often spoken out against absentee fathers, particularly in Black households, on Tuesday publicly acknowledged having fathered a second son with whom he is not in contact.
The admission came in response to a report by The Daily Beast, which said it had confirmed the 10-year-old boy’s parentage but withheld his name and that of his mother. It said the child’s mother had sued Mr. Walker a year after giving birth to obtain a declaration of paternity and child support, and that the suit lasted until August 2014, when Mr. Walker was ordered to pay child support. The boy, by then more than 2 years old, took Mr. Walker’s last name.
At the same time, he has repeatedly criticized fatherless homes in Black communities: In a 2020 interview with the conservative activist Charlie Kirk, he called the absence of fathers “a major, major problem” in Black households and boasted of having been “like a father” to many young people in his hometown in Georgia.
And in a 2021 interview with the Black conservative media personalities Diamond and Silk, Mr. Walker lamented that “the father leaves in the Black family. He leaves the boys alone so they’ll be raised by their mom,” comparing the dynamic to family separations during slavery.
The development is the latest and potentially the most damaging of a number of reports detailing Mr. Walker’s exaggerations and outright falsehoods concerning his life before entering politics. He has falsely claimed that he worked as a member of law enforcement in Georgia and with the F.B.I. in Quantico, Va., according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. He has also exaggerated his business record as the owner of a poultry company that collapsed years before he ran for office.
Mr. Walker’s opponent in the Senate race, Mr. Warnock, is contending with his own child custody dispute with his ex-wife, who has sued to have his child support payments “recalculated” given his increased income since taking office last year..”

I do not intend to marginalize this “gun safety framework” and I believe that Sen. Chris Murphy has only good intentions. This may very well be the best he can do with a corrupted and dysfunctional Senate that includes two Democratic traitors, Kyrsten Sinema and Joe Manchin.
However, the most effective way to stop or dramatically reduce the massacres is to re-instate the 1994 Assault Weapons Ban. The goal here is clearly not to stop the massacres.
Regarding “gun rights”, the Democrats are not going to take on the right wing despite the will of the people. So their approach to gun safety is to focus on the gun handler and not the gun. They’ll throw money at the states and see what they can do with red flag laws and mental health clinics.
If this passes, both Democrats and Republicans will congratulate themselves for doing something, but Democrats will sell it as a good start and Republicans will sell it as the final solution. They’ll go no further.
Neither side has the will or determination to re-instate the 1994 Assault Weapons Ban.
Their goal is to pass something that looks like a major gun safety bill but will take years for the states to implement new laws, build mental health clinics etc… and years to collect enough data to determine the efficacy of this framework. And that is assuming it gets legislated.
Yup..

They share that in common with the MAGA wing.

I was very much in favor of the “bipartisan” infrastructure bill.
However, when Biden went to the House and told the progressives it had to be decoupled from Build Back Better, I knew BBB wouldn’t pass in the Senate. Biden assured everyone it would pass separately, but he underestimated the willingness of Kyrsten Sinema to take down his agenda because she had already sold her vote. And Joe Manchin never could decide if he liked any of it or not. So, BBB is effectively dead and if the GOP takes back the House or Senate this year, then BBB may as well be cremated.
If we go back and review what the Democrats ran on in 2020, it’s clearly not what we’re getting. There was only a two year window in which to pass major progressive legislation
and that window is closing. And what stopped the Democrats? Two traitors in the Senate.
Forgive me if I don’t get excited when these so-called legislators do the bare minimum and many times not even that much.
Oh, yeah, one more thing. The Infrastructure Bill passed in the Senate because Mitch McConnell allowed GOP Senators to vote for it.
He’ll do the same on the gun safety bill, more than likely.
