President Joe Biden pardoned his son Hunter this past weekend.
In his proclamation, he noted that Hunter’s prosecution was politically motivated and intended to damage his father. And, not said in the notice: as a father, he wasn’t going to allow his son to swing in the wind while new Attorney General Pam Bondi begins the Trump Revenge Tour.
The reaction from the commentariat made it seem as if Pres. Biden had pardoned a child-murderer. The Economist inveighed that he “abused a medieval power.” Senator John Cornyn rose up on the Senate floor to chastise the action for “setting a bad example” as to the rule of law. Matt Yglesias did a U-turn from his previous position that Pres. Biden should pardon his son.
