From TPM:
SCOTUS Cobbles Together Excuse to Let Alabama Discriminate Against Black Voters in New Order
by Kate Riga
06.02.26 | 11:45 pm

The Supreme Court showed beyond a doubt Tuesday that it will never again put a stop to Republican states snuffing out the Black vote.

The six right-wing justices granted Alabama’s request for a stay, which clears the way for the state to hold its 2026 elections under a 2023 map crafted to deliver Republicans six congressional seats and Democrats only one. It does so by making Black Alabamians’ votes count for less than white ones’.

In Louisiana v. Callais, the Court made vote dilution nearly impossible to prove. It ignored Congress’ alterations to the Voting Rights Act and turned it back into an intents test, where the plaintiffs had to make the extremely difficult showing that the legislators intended to discriminate based on race. And yet, in the Alabama case, the plaintiffs managed to do that. The district court found plentiful evidence that the state intentionally discriminated after the court had previously ordered it to produce a map with two districts composed of a Black majority or near-majority, and Alabama flatly ignored it. The state instead produced another map with only one Black-majority district.

That evidence, rare in its unambiguity, still failed at the Supreme Court.

“As to intentional vote dilution, the District Court did not heed the presumption of legislative good faith because it interpreted the State’s legal disagreement with the court’s earlier remedial order as proof of discriminatory animus,” the majority wrote.

In her dissent, Justice Sonia Sotomayor wrote that the Court’s order proves that “there is no realistic case in which the presumption of legislative good faith can ever be rebutted.” It also, she added, “corrodes the rule of law by rewarding Alabama’s gamesmanship and outright defiance of court orders.”

The majority then delivers the death blow to any attempt to stop red states from suppressing the Black vote.

“Under Callais, the District Court was required to deny relief unless the plaintiffs’ alternative map performed ‘just as well’ with respect to all of the State’s constitutionally permissible districting criteria,” it wrote.

In other words, courts can only force red states to draw additional majority-minority districts if those districts will vote for Republican candidates. Since this will never happen in the South, where race and partisanship are intertwined, it ensures that red states’ efforts to gerrymander Republican candidates into easy wins will always trump Black voters’ ability to elect members of Congress who represent their interests.

SCOTUS Justice Blasts Colleagues in Scathing Dissent
LAW AND DISORDER
The Supreme Court’s conservative majority voted to greenlight Republicans’ power grab in a new state.

Liberal Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor blasted her conservative colleagues for “disregarding both democratic values and the rule of law” in a blistering dissent to a decision allowing Alabama to eliminate a majority-Black district at the 11th hour.

The justices voted 6-3 to grant an emergency request filed by Republican officials to use a congressional map in this year’s midterms that was approved in 2023 but had never been used because a lower court found the map intentionally discriminated against Black voters.

After the Supreme Court instructed the lower court to revisit its decision in light of an April ruling that weakened the Voting Rights Act (VRA), a three-judge panel of Ronald Reagan and Donald Trump appointees again found on May 26 that the map was unconstitutional.
…………..

The state’s primaries were originally supposed to take place on May 19, but Alabama’s Republican leaders suspended the election while they raced to take advantage of Callais to eliminate one of the state’s two majority-Black districts and boost Republicans’ chances in six of the state’s seven districts.

In her dissent, Obama-appointee Sotomayor wrote that the conservative justices had rejected an “orderly election, held under a tried-and-tested congressional map” and instead chose “a chaotic election, held under a never-before-used congressional map that intentionally discriminates against Black Alabamians.”
……………………
Alabama also adopted the map “in unashamed defiance of a prior court order directly affirmed by this Court,” Sotomayor wrote.

In 2023, the Supreme Court upheld a ruling rejecting another Alabama map drawn in 2021 that eliminated a majority-Black district.

“Just as Alabama doubled down on racial discrimination, the Court today doubles down on chaos,” Sotomayor wrote.

🚨 The Most Shocking Part Of The Alabama Redistricting Case Isn’t The Map.

It’s What The Supreme Court Said About It.

According to critics of the ruling, the Court acknowledged that Black voters were being denied equal political representation under Alabama’s congressional map.

Yet despite recognizing the problem, the Court ultimately allowed the map to remain in place.

That’s why opponents see the decision as so consequential.

The debate is no longer over whether discrimination occurred.

It’s over what happens when a court identifies it and the map survives anyway.

It’s a fight over whether voting rights protections still have teeth.

This is the closest thing to a Dred Scott era decision I’ve seen from the SCOTUS in my lifetime.

Even 2 Trump appointees and a Clinton appointee unanimously found intentional racial discrimination in the 2023 Alabama map, yet the majority of SCOTUS by 6-3 moved the goalposts and dramatically narrowed protections Congress enacted through the Voting Rights Act, and reaffirmed over and over, since it was originally enacted.

If there’s a fix, it has to come from Congress. That’s why 2026 and 2028 matter so much. Vote accordingly!

I have said before that I’m an elections (process) nerd.
    California said..
We are going to send mail ballots to every registered voter.

We obviously need a system to process back all those votes.
So, they set about building the infrastructure that can support all those ballots.
I have to tell you that I was stunned, watching the report after the 2020 election, where they were in the processing center for Los Angeles County.
The logistics of it all. All those ballots.

The process of a Mail Ballot Return.

    1. The date stamp review. Remember, it only has to be date stamped BY the date of the election. California allows 7 days for the ballot to get back to the Election Jurisdiction. (In Illinois where I live, it’s 14 days)

    2. The Signature review: Signatures that match the official signature- the ballot goes through. If the signature is deemed not to match, the ballot is pulled, but not discarded. It’s held while the voter is allowed to CURE their ballot within a specific time frame.

    3. Is it a clean ballot

Answer yes, well then it can be prepped for ballot scanning
Answer no, it has to be taken out and reviewed by humans. A panel of judges, both Republican and Democrat, who will review WHY the ballot was kicked out and sent for review.

    4. Then, the ballot is scanned for the votes.

And, they are doing this for MILLIONS of returned Mail Ballots.
    It’s amazing to watch.

People who continue to blame New World Screwworm crisis on the Biden Administration need to stop

The Secretary has had 15 months to prepare a competent response, and despite what some are saying, the response has been lackluster and unserious

    Let’s go over some facts:

In order to eradicate the NWS, we need somewhere between 500M-600M sterile flies produced WEEKLY, and we currently produce 100M weekly

There are current mechanisms and technologies that could be deployed IMMEDIATELY in order to produce those numbers that have been ignored by the USDA for the past 6 months

The Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) which oversees the NWS response is a disaster. There were some competent veterinarians interviewed during the transition willing to serve and reform the bureau who were blocked by the Secretary and her team. Instead they decided to retain the same director from the Biden Administration (ironic) who botched the response to the Avian flu

The tick rider program (people on horseback looking at wildlife and livestock in desolate areas) is completely disorganized, so the “surveillance” mechanisms that continue to be touted are not sufficient enough to detect these infestations in extremely rural areas in the timely manner required to combat this

On top of all this, producers in Texas are being pressured NOT TO REPORT potential cases, and if it wasn’t for some brave people reporting on this current case in LaPryor, it’s possible it would have been covered up

Some of the same folks defending Platner are the same folks telling us racist will turn away from Paxton because he’s an awful candidate.

Why was he in a 2-year relationship with this woman if she was so conservative? Y’all are not inquisitive enough for me or asking how this even came to be. You can’t get “smeared” by a GOP operative if you never were associated with her to begin with. It’s clear to me he was a conservative himself at one point and then became a leftist.

Since Platner is burning up the net, here’s your public announcement that ANY PERSON that says they are running as an *outsider* in the Democratic Party, even if they have a clean history, will be problematic.

    Book that.

Aid to Ukraine was passed over the objections of Speaker Preacher:

A new tranche of military assistance for Ukraine and sanctions on Russia passed the House on Thursday, delivering a fresh bipartisan blow to President Donald Trump’s foreign policy from Capitol Hill.

The measure passed despite Republican leadership’s resistance, with 18 GOP lawmakers supporting Democrats in a 226-195 vote.

It’s a strong show of support for Kyiv and the first time a standalone aid package has passed either chamber during Trump’s second term. Some Republicans have resisted allocating funding for Ukraine, especially since the president has opposed major aid packages and pushed for talks to end a war that has dragged into its fifth year.

The bill — which would provide $1.3 billion in security assistance for Kyiv and expand the suite of sanctions against Moscow — is the latest rebuke of the Trump administration’s national security policy, fueled partly by members of the president’s own party.

The House on Wednesday voted to halt the Iran war with four GOP members supporting the effort, the first time House Republicans have failed to hold the line on Trump’s authority over the military conflict. And the House Armed Services Committee is expected to advance defense legislation Thursday that limits reductions of U.S. troops in Europe.

A bipartisan coalition of 218 lawmakers forced a vote on the legislation — authored by House Foreign Affairs Committee ranking member Gregory Meeks — through a discharge petition begun by the New York Democrat nearly a year ago. The maneuver allows a majority of the House to advance bills that haven’t reached the floor through normal channels. Its success meant Speaker Mike Johnson could no longer block a long sought measure on Ukraine aid or Russia sanctions…

The effort has become a flashpoint in the GOP conference, with Johnson urging members to oppose the legislation in a closed-door party meeting this week. The vote was “not a reflection of Congress’ support for Ukraine,” Johnson said after the vote, calling the bill “poorly drafted.” …
