MoveOn.org says MSNBC won’t run its Target ad
MoveOn.org unveiled an ad earlier this week going after Target for helping to pay for TV ads backing political candidates. The liberal group said Thursday that MSNBC has rejected its ad, which you can watch below, because it’s a direct attack on an individual business, an apparent violation of NBC policy. (Of course it’s not hard to surmise why MSNBC would want to avoid running an ad attacking an existing or potential client.)
Still no word from MSNBC on its view, but MoveOn.org says the network is being hypocritical.
“According to MSNBC and GE it is alright for corporations, like Target, to attack candidates and buy elections, but it is not OK for citizen organizations, like MoveOn, to fight back,” said Justin Ruben, executive director of MoveOn.org, in a statement. He added, “Target Corporation decided to use the Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision to try to buy the Minnesota Governor’s election and now GE and MSNBC are protecting them from deserved consumer backlash.”

Russell Simmons Thinks It’s A Bad Idea To Move The Islamic Mosque Near Ground Zero
Host Larry King brought on Simmons to discuss the controversy over the New York City mosque near Ground Zero. He appeared immediately after an interview of New York Governor David Paterson, who attempted to negotiate with the planners behind the mosque in order to get its site moved. King first asked the entrepreneur to respond to the governor’s efforts. He unequivocally supported the proposed worship space: “We should make every effort not to move it.
“I think it’s critical that we recognize that we built this country on religious tolerance and on religious freedom. And so, if we want to penalize the two billion Muslims because of the actions of a few, then we have to examine the way we look at each other and all religions. So I think it would be a terrible idea to move the mosque.”

The grassroots political organization founded by Howard Dean after the 2004 presidential election has made a dramatic break with the former DNC chairman over the construction of an Islamic cultural center near Ground Zero.
Democracy for America, a million-plus member organization that is active on a host of legislative fronts, formally endorsed the controversial Cordoba House on Thursday, one day after its founding figure called for the project to be built elsewhere.
In a letter sent to members, the group’s executive director, Arshad Hasan, weaves together his personal history with a detailed explanation of the project’s lofty and noble objectives. In a direct but diplomatic touch, he addresses Dean’s opposition only by explaining that “well-intentioned” Democrats are “getting caught up” in the anti-mosque hysteria. “It’s not helping,” writes Hasan.
[L]et’s be clear, the subject of the highest profile Muslim structure, 51 Park in New York City, will have a basketball court and a culinary school. Two floors will have a prayer room. The other eleven will host movie nights, performances, group dinners, etc — it’s basically a Muslim YMCA, open to everyone. These moderate Muslims are doing everything we could ask of them. They’re trying to build a bridge in the communities they live in, trying to show the world that Muslims are cool and interesting and diverse, and proving that being a Muslim does not equal being a terrorist.

Nevada Republican Senate candidate Sharron Angle once partook in a campaign against a local high school’s use of black football jerseys, arguing that the dark color was ungodly and wicked, Bill Roberts of Nevada’s Pahrump Valley Times recently reported.
It was Homecoming of 1992 and Nevada’s Tonopah High School football was seeking to depart from their school colors, specifically in wearing black jerseys instead of the usual red and white. The uniform change was meant to be a display of solidarity; the year before, the team had suffered an embarrassing loss at the hands of a rival that had, up to that point, been winless. The Homecoming game in 1992 was their chance to make up for that plaguing defeat in front of the whole school, and they wanted to do something special to build the team’s spirits.
Enter Sharron Angle and her color-crusading cohort.
While some detractors made the argument that adopting the new color was unacceptable simply as a breach of tradition, Angle — who was in the midst of an eventually successful campaign for school board — and others argued that wearing black jerseys was closer to sacrilege.

Shirley Sherrod Describes Her Ordeal, Blames Fox News For Creating Scandal

Despite being fired by the Obama administration, condemned by the media and targeted with abusive phone calls, Shirley Sherrod still believes in America and the promise of a multiracial society living in harmony.
In an interview with Huffington Post, the former Agriculture Department official described her shock at landing in the middle of a media firestorm when her misconstrued remarks from an edited video clip led millions of Americans to believe that she had once discriminated against a white farmer. She also gave her thoughts on the new job offered her by USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack, her phone call with President Obama, her refusal to appear on Fox News or to speak to Andrew Breitbart and her doubts that whites are the victims of black racism.
“I’m still looking at it — I’ve asked some questions about it and I have a few more questions,” Sherrod said about Vilsack’s offer to promote her to the position of deputy director of the office of advocacy and outreach at the USDA, adding that she will meet with Vilsack and USDA officials on August 24. “It’s [a job] dealing with discrimination in the agency, working with minority groups and so forth. I’m a little concerned that the agency has really not dealt with that issue in the way that it should have through the years.”

Police looking into damage to senator’s home

CNN) – A window in Sen. Al Franken’s Minneapolis residence was damaged by what could have been a pellet or BB fired from a gun, according to the Minneapolis Police Department.
Sgt. Bill Palmer of the Minneapolis Police Department told CNN that members of the Franken family recently reported finding a hole in a window of their Minneapolis condominium that appeared to be made by either a BB gun or small rock.
The hole damaged a double-paned window, but did not penetrate the second pane, Palmer also said.
The object in question was not found and it remains unclear exactly when the damage occurred. Palmer said that it is unlikely the possible BB shot was directed at the Minnesota Democrat.
“I find it unlikely people actually even know where the senator lives,” Palmer said.
Marc Kimball, a spokesman for Franken, added the matter is under investigation by both the Minneapolis Police Department and the U.S. Capitol Police and said, “It happened when they were not home.”
A spokesperson for the U.S. Capitol Police did not return CNN’s request for comment.

Federal prosecutors should not retry Rod Blagojevich

U.S. ATTORNEY Patrick J. Fitzgerald should back off his vow to retry former governor Rod Blagojevich (D-Ill.). With moral thunder in December 2008, the aggressive prosecutor declared that the state’s chief executive was nabbed “in the middle of what we can only describe as a public corruption crime spree.” Mr. Fitzgerald added, “The conduct would make Lincoln roll over in his grave.” Yet on Tuesday, 20 months later, a federal jury was unmoved. In an extraordinary rebuke, Mr. Blagojevich was convicted on only one of 24 counts against him.
Mr. Fitzgerald brought unlimited resources and the power of the federal government to the case against Mr. Blagojevich. The charges included racketeering, bribery, conspiracy, extortion and making false statements. He was accused of exchanging state contracts for campaign donations.
The most explosive accusation was that Mr. Blagojevich was trying to sell his ability to appoint someone to fill President Obama’s former Senate seat. The charges against him were enough to get him impeached and removed from office in January 2009.

President Obama begins 10-day vacation in Martha’s Vineyard

WASHINGTON – President Obama on Thursday starts a 10-day vacation in Martha’s Vineyard, where he can enjoy watching the sun sink below the horizon – instead of his poll numbers.
The summer playground off the Massachusetts coast is brimming with Secret Service agents and extra state police. A Coast Guard cutter will patrol the waters off the property.
“I do think that just like a lot of American people, the President is taking a little time with his family to recharge his batteries,” spokesman Bill Burton said.
Not that the burdens of the presidency may not interrupt him. Obama has a knack for scheduling his break when big events intrude.

Operation Iraqi Freedom ends as last combat soldiers leave Baghdad

The 4th Stryker Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division, which left Iraq this week, was the final U.S. combat brigade to be pulled out of the country, fulfilling the Obama administration’s pledge to end the U.S. combat mission by the end of August. About 50,000 U.S. troops will remain in Iraq, mainly as a training force.
“Operation Iraqi Freedom ends on your watch!” exclaimed Col. John Norris, the head of the brigade.
“Hooah!” the soldiers roared, using an Army battle cry.

Diversity in government workforce is on the minds of Federal Diary readers

The Federal Diary gets lots of mail, some of it fit to print. We give readers a chance to speak out by occasionally publishing some of their letters.
Thank you for the column on the Temple University program that is helping to create diversity in the National Park Service. It hit home because my wife and I recently took our two grandchildren to Fort McHenry.
We, along with dozens of other visitors, helped raise a full-scale flag under the guidance of NPS intern Tia Solomon.
There were several other Park Service employees of color, some in uniform, others in reenactment dress. Another uniformed black young lady gave the lecture that accompanied the movie in the visitors’ center. There were other black rangers in the fort itself: one lady in a period dress and two men in 1812 sailor uniforms who gave a rousing display of how to use a saber in combat.
Fifty years ago, I remember my parents taking me to Mount Vernon and Williamsburg. The black employees only portrayed slaves or servants. I am very glad that my grandchildren were not exposed to that.
