HAPPY TUESDAY, FOLKS!
BOOM, BOOM, BOOM, BOOM! Stroke it John. You are an ORIGINAL.
From the wiki: John Lee Hooker (August 22, 1917 – June 21, 2001) was an American blues singer-songwriter and guitarist, born near Clarksdale, Mississippi. Hooker began his life as the son of a sharecropper, William Hooker, and rose to prominence performing his own unique style of what was originally closest to Delta blues. He developed a ‘talking blues‘ style that was his trademark. Though similar to the early Delta blues, his music was metrically free. John Lee Hooker could be said to embody his own unique genre of the blues, often incorporating the boogie-woogie piano style and a driving rhythm into his masterful and idiosyncratic blues guitar and singing. His best known songs include “Boogie Chillen” (1948) and “Boom Boom” (1962).
Hooker’s life experiences were chronicled by several scholars and often read like a classic case study in the racism of the music industry, although he eventually rose to prominence with memorable songs and influence on a generation of musicians.

After Katrina, New Orleans Cops Were Told They Could Shoot Looters
http://www.propublica.org/nola/story/nopd-order-to-shoot-looters-hurricane-katrina
In the chaotic days after Hurricane Katrina, an order circulated among New Orleans police authorizing officers to shoot looters, according to present and former members of the department.
It’s not clear how broadly the order was communicated. Some officers who heard it say they refused to carry it out. Others say they understood it as a fundamental change in the standards on deadly force, which allow police to fire only to protect themselves or others from what appears to be an imminent physical threat.
The accounts of orders to “shoot looters,” “take back the city,” or “do what you have to do” are fragmentary. It remains unclear who originated them or whether they were heard by any of the officers involved in shooting 11 civilians in the days after Katrina. Thus far, no officers implicated in shootings have used the order as an explanation for their actions. Only one of the people shot by police – Henry Glover – was allegedly stealing goods at the time he was shot.

NY Rep. Rangel knocks Obama for ‘dignity’ remark
The Associated Press
Tuesday, August 24, 2010; 8:39 AM
NEW YORK — New York Rep. Charles Rangel has shot back at President Barack Obama’s recent comment that he “end his career with dignity.”
Speaking at a candidate’s forum Monday night in New York City, Rangel said the president hasn’t “been around long enough to determine what my dignity is.”
The 80-year-old congressman said it was more likely he would protect Obama’s dignity over the next two years.

Video: Rachel Maddow, Glenn Becks Lincoln Memorial I have a Dream rally
http://rackjite.com/
Here again we get a good look into what KIND OF PEOPLE these Tea Partiers are. Don’t even think about going near any black people! They will rob and kill you!
Glenn Beck, the spiritual leader of the Tea Party [Dick Armey is their political leader] claims Obama is a racist who hates white people. With that message accompanied by a sea of posters of Obama-Hitler, Obama-Joker and Obama-bin Laden, Glenn Beck is going to turn history, logic and common sense on its head come August 28th on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. A White-wing rally against Civil Rights in the name of Martin Luther King.
And you thought SB1070, Brietbarting and these ugly anti-Islam rallies were disgusting examples of what America has become since Obama turned the White House black? This one has the needle flying off the disgust-o-meter into the very heart of the 1st Amendment, the 14th Amendment and the Civil Rights Act. We can only hope it’s an embarrassing no show for this creepy Republcian. After all, one would have to be an awfully ugly KIND OF HUMAN BEING to take a crap on Martin Luther King to such a degree. Very very ugly. I wonder who will speak there?
Let It Lie
Why won’t any Republicans condemn the “Obama is a Muslim” myth?
By John Dickerson
Posted Monday, Aug. 23, 2010, at 8:23 PM ET
With so much traffic on the low road in American politics, you’d imagine a politician or two might take the high road simply to beat the congestion. Sunday on Meet the Press, Mitch McConnell was asked about the Pew poll that showed 31 percent of Republicans believe Obama is a Muslim. He said, “The president says he’s a Christian. I take him at his word. I don’t think that’s in dispute.” If you only paid attention to his first two sentences, as some pundits did, you might think McConnell was trying to keep doubt alive by suggesting the matter was one of debate. If you were patient enough to listen to the last sentence, you heard him say that the matter is not one of debate at all.
If McConnell wasn’t trying to stir the pot, he also wasn’t trying to lower the boil. What you didn’t hear McConnell say was that the whole notion that Obama is a Muslim is ridiculous because by any standard we use to evaluate the religious beliefs of our leaders, President Obama is a Christian. Nor did he go on to say that any politician who tries to benefit from this urban legend—by courting either Islamophobes or conspiracy nuts who think Obama is engaged in some kind of systematic deception—should be ashamed of himself.

Republicans won’t condemn the lie because they want the country to remain hostile & incite hate against this President. They don’t give a damn about this country. Their goal is to get back in power …even if it means scaring white people to do it.
Let’s say it again. I’ll take Mitch McConnell and his ilk at their word that they aren’t modern day members of the KLU KLUX KLAN!
…With the hoods off!
…in broad daylight.
Michelle Obama’s ‘cleanse’: Would it work for you?
By Jennifer Larue Huget
Thursday, August 26, 2010
In an interview in September’s Ladies’ Home Journal, first lady Michelle Obama mentions that she occasionally takes part in a cleanse. She meant, according to her press office, that she eats as much fruit and vegetables as possible and cuts out fats and oils, dairy, meat, caffeine, sugar and starch for a short period of time.
Doing so, she told the magazine, helps “clean out my palate.”
Such a cleanse isn’t something I considered for my Me Minus 10 weight-loss project, but I wondered whether it could be beneficial to others.
Temporarily restricting one’s food can be a useful way to kick off a weight-loss diet or transition to better long-term eating habits, says Jim White, a Virginia Beach-based registered dietitian and spokesman for the American Dietetic Association. Obama’s mix of foods, though limited, should provide enough nutrients to maintain her metabolism and blood-sugar levels, at least in the short run, he says.
Keri Gans, also a registered dietitian and ADA spokeswoman, is not a fan, however. “It’s setting up that the only way to eat healthy is to restrict,” she says. “She should be learning to eat from all food groups correctly.”

Shirley Sherrod Declines Offer To Return To Ag. Department
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/08/24/shirley-sherrod-declines-_n_692390.html
WASHINGTON — Shirley Sherrod, the Agriculture Department official ousted during a racial firestorm last month, declined Tuesday to return to the agency, though she said it was tempting.
Sherrod and Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said that she may work with the agency in a consulting capacity in the future to help it improve its outreach to minorities. She told reporters she did not think she could say yes to a job “at this point, with all that has happened.”
“I look forward to some type of relationship with the department in the future,” she said. “We do need to work on the issues of discrimination and race in this country.”
Vilsack, who apologized to Sherrod for pushing her out, had offered her a new position in the Office of Advocacy and Outreach, which is works on civil rights issues.
So the Wind Won’t Blow It All Away
http://www.pbs.org/pov/sothewind/
So the Wind Won’t Blow It All Away reveals how the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina continues to have impact on the lives of its victims — and how entire families are among the casualties. The film tells the story of a determined group of teenagers who, more than two years after Hurricane Katrina devastated their homes and scattered their families, return to New Orleans alone and struggle to graduate from high school with their more fortunate friends. So the Wind Won’t Blow It All Away is a touching and shocking exposé of the abandoned children of Louisiana, but it is also a bracing portrait of teens who won’t be defeated by their abandonment.
No surprises here. If Shirley Sherrod wanted that position, she would have taken it last month when offered.
I think she made the right decision. Besides, consulting pays well and she’d be her own boss. No more pulling off on the side of the road for requests to text in her resgination….
Vette, where you at? LOL Ms. Sherrod has spoken!
LOL
Vette, what are your thoughts?
Kids Still Shaken by Katrina
http://colorlines.com/archives/2010/08/five_years_on_children_and_families_still_shaken_by_katrina.html
Hurricane Katrina’s floodwaters haven’t stopped rippling through the minds of children on the Gulf Coast. Studies suggest that five years later, the accumulated stress of instability and poverty—and government neglect—has shown up in families’ emotional and mental health.
According to a long-term study by Columbia University’s National Center for Disaster Preparedness, about 37 percent of children “have received a clinical mental health diagnosis of depression, anxiety, or behavior disorder.” That means nearly four in 10 kids, according to their parents’ reports, have spent much of their first years wading through deep emotional and mental crises.
The researchers discovered that “children exposed to Hurricane Katrina were nearly 5 times as likely as a pre-Katrina cohort to exhibit serious emotional disturbance,” which is often fueled by other forms of household or family stress. The study reinforces previous research that has shown the ways in which the stressors of poverty show up in both physical and mental health.

Stewart: FOX Failed To Mention Co-Owner Is One They Accuse Of ‘Terror Funding’ (VIDEO)
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/08/23/stewart-fox-prince-alwaleed_n_692234.html
Jon Stewart continued his coverage of the ‘Ground Zero Mosque’ debate last night, focusing on Fox News’ incongruities harder than he ever has. In a segment called “The Parent Company Trap,” Stewart shared with his viewers how Fox News’ plan to “follow the money” from mosque builder Imam Rauf to terrorists will be a tricky one because it leads right back to Fox News.
Stewart showed clips from his show last week, in which he mocked Fox News for playing a dangerous game of association based on speculation, and wherein Fox continued to mention a nameless man with ties to Imam Rauf through the “Kingdom Foundation.” It turns out the man they are referring to but never name is Saudi prince Al-Waleed bin Talal, one of the biggest shareholders of Rupert Murdoch’s News Corps.
You know these kids will never, ever be the same. They need a mighty love to pull them from that darkness.

Shirley Sherrod to meet with agriculture secretary, discuss jobBy the CNN Wire StaffAugust 24, 2010 7:25 a.m. EDT
(CNN) — Shirley Sherrod, who received an apology after being forced to resign from the Agriculture Department, will meet Tuesday morning with Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack to discuss a job offer.
It will be the first face-to-face meeting between the two since a controversial sequence of events last month culminated in her stepping down.
Sherrod, who was the Agriculture Department’s Georgia Director of Rural Development, has said she is being offered the position of Deputy Director of the Office of Advocacy and Outreach.
The position includes administration and outreach to improve the Agriculture Department’s civil rights efforts and image nationwide.
Sherrod was forced to resign in July after misleading and incomplete video footage of a speech she gave was posted on the internet and picked up in media reports. Vilsack apologized to her and offered her the promotion.

The right-wing, blinded by its own hysteria
By Eugene Robinson
Tuesday, August 24, 2010
When did the loudmouths of the American right become such a bunch of fraidy-cats and professional victims? Or is it all just an act?
The hysteria over plans for an innocuous Muslim community center in Lower Manhattan — two blocks from Ground Zero, amid an urban hodgepodge of office buildings, eateries and strip clubs — is wildly out of proportion. It would be laughable if it didn’t threaten to do great harm to the global campaign against Islamic terrorism.
It is by now firmly established that the project, dubbed Park51, is promoted by a peacenik Muslim cleric whose sermons often sound a bit like the musings of new-age guru Deepak Chopra. It is also undisputed fact that the imam in question, Feisal Abdul Rauf, is such a moderate that the U.S. government regularly sends him as an emissary to Muslim countries to preach peace, coexistence and dialogue.
