Mo’ Better Blues is a 1990 drama film starring Denzel Washington, Wesley Snipes, and Spike Lee, who also directed. It follows a period in the life of a fictional jazz trumpeter Bleek Gilliam (played by Washington) as a series of bad decisions result in his jeopardizing both his relationships and his playing career. The film focuses on themes of friendship, loyalty, honesty, cause-and-effect and ultimately salvation. It features the music of the Branford Marsalis quartet and Terence Blanchard on trumpet.

Go out and make it a Mo’ Better Day!

  1. Meek schedules press conference tonight

    http://demopedia.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=433×492374

Charlie Crist said on MSNBC that he doesn’t expect Kendrick Meek to drop out of the three-way U.S. Senate race: “I think that all three of us will be on the ballot.”

But he said he knew about the Clinton conversations. “How would I know?,” he said, answering a question host Keith Olbermann said had been asked by the Meek campaign. “Because I had numerous phone calls with people very close to President Clinton. It’s true.”

And Meek’s campaign just announced a 9:30 press conference at their offices in Miami Gardens.

But she is trying to help out that really really speciiiiial state of TX, now:

“Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Texas) informed Attorney General Eric Holder of recent reports of voter intimidation in Houston on Thursday and requested that the Department of Justice investigate.

Jackson Lee, who has traded accusations over election violations with a Tea Party group in Harris County, urged Holder to immediately send federal poll monitors to the county. A Justice Department representative said they would be announcing federal monitors on Friday.”

    absolutely incredible!

In the old days we called it breaking the law; now it’s “ideological conflict.”

Ametia, remember when we spoke about Silver’s corporate paymasters now? Well lo and behold guess what?

He’s trying to back track now. It seems, all of these sure bet seats that the GOP are supposed to be taking on Nov. 2, are based on mere 1 and 2 point leads! There are even 6 seats which are projected to be GOPs wins that are based on a mere half point!!

Since when is a 1 point lead not a toss up. A bunch of these races that have been called guaranteed wins for GOPs weeks on end are actually freakin’ toss ups!

O the lies of omission the media plays…just like Hilliary during the primaries, who had NO chance of winning! But they kept talking about votes, instead of delegates, just to create a FALSE horserace.

Well they have perfected that technique with the midterm elections.

  7. John Boehner: ‘We will not compromise’

    http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1010/44311.html

If Republicans take the House as anticipated on Election Night, voters can expect to hear the customary talk about coming together with Democrats for the good of the country.

President Barack Obama inevitably will extend a hand across the aisle as well.

But that’s Tuesday. Right now, the tone is a lot different – with Republicans pledging to embrace an agenda for the next two years that sounds a lot like their agenda for the last two: Block Obama at all costs.

And even Obama’s pre-election appeals to cooperation are wrapped in an I’m-still-the-president tone that suggests that Americans will be looking at two opposing camps glaring at each other across the barricades — gridlock all around.

Here’s John Boehner, the likely speaker if Republicans take the House, offering his plans for Obama’s agenda: “We’re going to do everything — and I mean everything we can do — to kill it, stop it, slow it down, whatever we can.”

Somebody tell John Boehner, he’s not going to be speaker! Please, beyotch!!!!!!!!!

….Brown, the state attorney general and former two-term governor who also served eight years as Oakland’s mayor, holds formidable leads among three voter groups considered crucial to the contest: Among Latinos, he leads Whitman by 30 points, while holding 16-point leads over Whitman among women and independent voters, the poll found….

  12. Prove Them Wrong

  13. opulent2 says:

It’s voter SUPPRESSION not fraud that is the issue but ain’t nobody talking about THAT!! Hmmmmm, now why would that be? Is it because… o snap! ..R the voters being suppressed are minorities…just black, blackety blackiddy!!

“With another Election Day approaching, conservatives are again trotting out conspiracy theories about elections stolen through voter fraud. The absence of any actual intimidated voters in the trumped-up New Black Panther voter intimidation case has been a fundraising boon for the Republican National Lawyers’ Association, which has spent all year trying to persuade anyone who will listen that there is an “epidemic” of voter fraud. As Suzy Khimm has reported for Mother Jones, conservative groups in Minnesota, Illinois, and Texas have all been gearing up for so called “anti-fraud” operations.

Voter fraud is a virtually nonexistent problem. Conservatives helped assemble the myth that now-defunct community organizing group ACORN “stole elections” by blurring the distinction between voter registration fraud — which is as easy as filling out a registration form incorrectly — and the actual act of casting a fraudulent ballot. Despite the fact that the Justice Department spent years in an effort to root out voter fraud that only produced a handful of prosecutions, none involving a large-scale conspiracy to steal an election, the belief that Democrats regularly steal elections through fraudulent votes is widespread. Nevertheless, this myth gets recycled every election year. Last year Wall Street Journal editorial columnist John Fund even stooped to recycling a anecdote about voter fraud in Philadelphia in 1993 — almost verbatim — to allege voter fraud in the New Jersey Governor’s race. As a 2007 Brennan Center report put it, the possibility that someone will impersonate another person at the polls is “more rare than death by lightning.” There’s a reason for that: As Chris Beam points out, even if you wanted to steal an election this way, it’s logistically unfeasible. Swaying the numbers in any significant way would require such a large number of well-trained co-conspirators that getting caught is a virtual certainty.

So-called “voter integrity” efforts often have a more sinister motive — suppressing votes in Democratic leaning precincts, which often means areas where there are a lot of minority voters. It’s no coincidence that Illinois Senate candidate Mark Kirk indicated his intent to send “voter integrity” squads to black neighborhoods in Chicago, or that a Tea Party group baselessly accused a voter registration group of colluding with the New Black Panther Party.

But while the voter fraud panic is mostly hype, voter suppression is a very real phenomenon. Before the Voting Rights Act of 1965 empowered the federal government to protect the franchise, black voters were essentially barred from voting through violence, intimidation, and coercion.

While the most egregious forms of voter suppression are largely a thing of the past, voter suppression efforts still exist in a more subtle form. Part of the reason there are so many outside Republican groups taking on “voter integrity” initiatives is that the RNC’s efforts have to be reviewed by the courts under the terms of a 1982 consent decree, as a result of its prior attempts to suppress the vote in black and Latino neighborhoods through illegal “caging” schemes.”

More shit hitting the fan in housing market:

“California, Nevada, Florida and Arizona remain the nation’s foreclosure hotbeds, accounting for 19 of the top 20 metropolitan areas with the highest foreclosure rates between July and September, foreclosure listing firm RealtyTrac Inc. said Thursday.

Those states saw housing values surge during the housing boom years. When the boom ended, values collapsed and foreclosures soared.

But the latest data show that many of the metro areas in those states saw a decline in the number of households receiving foreclosure-related filings, while many cities in other states saw a spike in foreclosure activity.

“The epidemic is spreading from the states at the ground zero of the foreclosure problems out into areas that hadn’t been previously affected,” said Rick Sharga, a senior vice president at RealtyTrac.

The trend is the latest sign that the nation’s foreclosure crisis is worsening as homeowners facing high unemployment, slow job growth and uncertainty about home prices continue to fall behind on their mortgage payments.
    Story continues below

In all, 133 out of 206 metropolitan areas with at least 200,000 residents posted an annual increase in foreclosure activity in the three months ended Sept. 30, RealtyTrac said.

The firm tracks notices for defaults, scheduled home auctions and home repossessions – warnings that can lead up to a home eventually being lost to foreclosure.

Eleven out of the nation’s 20 largest metropolitan areas saw foreclosure activity increase in the third quarter compared to the same period last year.

The Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue metro area registered the sharpest annual increase – 71 percent. One in every 129 households received a foreclosure filing.

The Chicago-Naperville-Joliet metropolitan area posted the second-highest annual jump, a 35 percent increase. One in every 84 households received a foreclosure notice.

Among the other metro areas where foreclosure activity jumped by a large margin this summer were Houston-Sugar Land-Baytown, up 26 percent; Detroit-Warren-Livonia, at nearly 23 percent; and, Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Marietta, up 20 percent.

Economic woes, such as unemployment or reduced income, continue to be the main catalysts for foreclosures this year. The U.S. unemployment rate hit 9.6 percent last month.

In the Seattle metro area, unemployment stood slightly lower at 8.5 percent in August and has been edging lower. It was 8.7 percent in August last year.

Still, many troubled homeowners have been unable to hang on. As a result, there’s been no letup in the inventory of foreclosed homes on the market this year, says John Bauer, an agent with ZipRealty in Seattle who represents lenders selling foreclosed properties.

“It has been on an upward trend curve ever since 2008,” Bauer said. “And not just the third quarter of this year, but the last 12 months, it’s been on a steady ascension.”

Chicago also had the third-highest number of homes repossessed by lenders during the quarter – 12,568 – behind the Phoenix metro area’s 14,317 and the Miami metro area’s 12,963, RealtyTrac said.

Banks have seized more than 816,000 homes through the first nine months of the year and are on pace to seize more than a million.”

  16. opulent2 says:

    I agree with this:

“you’ll also find that policy doesn’t swing very wildly when government changes hands. Parties do what they can to reward supporters, but they can’t do too much. Many interest groups play both sides, exerting significant influence on policy regardless of the party in power. Military suppliers, big Wall Street interests, and the economic middle-class may do better or worse, but they always do pretty well. Moreover, policy is quite constrained by general public opinion. Neither party will drift too far from the median voter. Of course, the median voter doesn’t know or care much about many areas of policy. In those cases, interest groups that stand to gain or lose from a change in policy may be the decisive influence. But, even then, parties are not unfettered. For one thing, the interests that constitute a winning coalition are not all perfectly aligned, and we can expect parties often to split the difference in internal conflicts. And, of course, out-of-power interest groups are not powerless. It is not uncommon for opposing lobbyists to more or less cancel out each others’ influence.

All this adds up to: very little change about half of us tepidly believe in. Consider the alternative universe in which Mitt Romney is president. It’s quite plausible that Romneycare looks a great deal like Obamacare. It’s quite plausible that Mr Romney’s parallel-world defence policy uncannily resembles Mr Obama’s. And so on. I am heartened by the prospect of divided government, but we shouldn’t expect government with a moderate, centre-right House to look a lot different from the moderate, centre-left government we’ve got now.

Nevertheless, people are going out of their minds stomping heads and warning of streets teeming with sexual predators because we are all phenomenal dupes willing to pick up the propaganda partisans put down. Our minds have been warped by relentless marketing designed to engender false consciousness of stark political brand contrasts. It’s as if Crest is telling us that Colgate leads to socialism and Colgate is telling us that Crest leads to plutocracy and all of us believe half of it.”

  17. opulent2 says:

    Interesting perspective:

“This is the great unspeakable fact of American politics: it doesn’t matter all that much who wins.

That’s not to say it doesn’t matter at all. It does matter. It just matters in ways rather different from the ways we are encouraged to think it matters by politicians and the press. I’m glad my wise co-blogger warned us the other day against neglecting zero-sum thinking in politics. Democratic politics is to a great extent a war of coalitions over what the great political economist James M. Buchanan called “the fiscal commons”. Think of government as a huge pool of money. Control of government means control over that pool of money. Parties gain control by putting together winning coalitions of interest groups. When a party has control, its coalition’s interest groups get more from the pool and the losing coalition’s interest groups get less. So, yeah, it matters who wins. When Democrats are in charge, that’s great news for public-employees unions and General Electric’s alternative energy division. When the Republicans are in charge, that’s great news for rich people and Raytheon.

Of course, it’s a simplification to see government as a big pool of money. Distributional conflict has many guises. The money in the pool has to come from somewhere, so the battle is waged just as much over who is forced to pay into the pool and under what circumstances. The middle class doesn’t like to get welfare checks, so instead it gets tax credits and deductions for doing things middle-class people generally do anyway. It’s six one way, half-a-dozen the other. Regulatory policy is even more indirect, but regulation often amounts to little more than welfare checks for some interest groups and taxes for others. Monetary policy has distributional consequences, too, by changing the real value of money. Other things equal, inflation erases both debt and savings; good for debtors, bad for creditors. I think you’ll find that political parties tend to reliably support policies that have nice distributional consequences for the interest groups that support them. And I think you’ll find politicians and court intellectuals brilliant at framing pay-offs to party stalwarts as policies absolutely necessary to the common weal. ”

Man!! This housing crisis is getting tougher…damned if you do damned if you don’t.

“At the start of the recession, Dr. Ron Throupe, assistant professor at the University of Denver’s Daniels College of Business Burns School of Real Estate and Construction Management, saw the reports of renters caught up in foreclosure nightmares. And now, he says, he has friends who are in the very same fix. One of them called Throupe last week, saying his family “got what I call a ‘tack-and-send’; they tack the notice to the door. It was for his landlord, who was late on his mortgage. This guy’s living there, he has aspirations to purchase the place, his lease ends in February — he’s like, ‘Ron, what can I do?'”

Dr. Throupe thinks this might be phase two of the mortgage mess, as home-owners who survived the first tsunami of the post-housing bubble struggle to hold on to their properties. “Two years ago I saw quite a bit of it,” he says, “and now I’m seeing it again. I suspect [some] people are trying to rent the place for a while; maybe that worked, the lease got them half-way home on their debt, [but] now it’s coming home to roost and they’re still not making their debt.”

And the renters, meanwhile, are unwilling players in the so-called “shadow market.” Those are houses “that would be on the market if [their owners] felt they could sell them,” says Dr. Throupe. “A lot of those are renting; [their owners] trying to buy time to get to a better market condition.”

The shadow market also leaves some renters wondering if they’ll ever get back their security deposits, advanced rent payments and other out-of-pocket expenses. That concern, plus the uncertainty of whether to pay the property owner or the bank, has prompted some tenants to simply withhold payments altogether.

“I’ve heard that to some extent and I can’t blame them,” say Throupe. “Technically, who owns the rent? There’s still a contract in place, but it’s like that movie, Catch Me If You Can.”

Something else Obama has done that folks don’t know.

“It’s one of those stories that sounds appalling, that you might hope the media is playing up just for its shock value: responsible and conscientious tenants who suddenly find themselves evicted and out of a home — because the property they are renting is under foreclosure.

At the start of the recession, reports of renters being blindsided by foreclosure notices were not unusual. The problem prompted President Obama to sign the federal Protecting Tenants at Foreclosure Act in 2009. It requires tenants receive a 90-day notice if they are being evicted due to foreclosure — and that most existing leases for renters be honored up to the end of their term.”

    — President Obama offering to help Georgia gubernatorial candidate Roy Barnes (D) in any way, as recounted by Barnes to the Atlanta Journal Constitution.

“Before heading to Savannah, Democratic nominee for governor Roy Barnes stopped by to talk to Frank Ski and Wanda Smith at V-103, one of Atlanta’s most popular radio stations – with a large African-American audience.

Right off the bat, Ski played an ad that – the radio host declared – Barnes had backed with a whole lot of money on his station. The clip had Republican rival Nathan Deal using the phrase “ghetto grandmothers.”
Democrat Roy Barnes told V-103 listeners Thursday that President Barack Obama encouraged him to miss his August visit to Atlanta. JohnnyCrawford, Jcrawford@ajc.com

Democrat Roy Barnes told V-103 listeners Thursday that President Barack Obama encouraged him to miss his August visit to Atlanta. JohnnyCrawford, Jcrawford@ajc.com

“What did you think about that?” Ski asked.

    Said Barnes:

“I thought it showed a great deal of insensitivity and a lack of knowledge about our state. It’s offensive to me, and I can just imagine how offensive it is to others that would hear it. What does that mean? I don’t know what that means, but I’ve got a good idea that it’s not very favorable.”

The Democratic nominee talked about other topics for a while. Barnes called Zell Miller a “very progressive governor” – a bit of an inside joke, given that “progressive” is the new “liberal.”

And he condemned a very particular outside group playing in the governor’s contest:

“Never in Georgia’s history have we had an outside group such as the Republican Governors Association come in – and I think they’re going to end up seven or eight million dollars. Easily. An outside group that comes in and does nothing but distort the record that I had as governor.”

But ultimately, Ski got down to business, with the question on the minds of many of his listeners: “Did you distance yourself from President Barack Obama when he visited Georgia?”

    Meanwhile in Miami…

“Hispanics are increasingly concerned about a backlash against them, even as they are split over the effects of illegal immigration on the country. Their anxiety comes as illegal immigration and border security are playing major roles in election campaigns nationwide.

More than 60 percent of Latinos say discrimination against Hispanics is a “major problem,” up from 54 percent who said the same in 2007, according to a report to be released Thursday by the nonpartisan Pew Hispanic Center.

Three years ago, Hispanics were most likely to cite language skills as the biggest reason for discrimination. Now, more than a third believe immigration is the biggest factor.

That said, the number of Latinos who reported they, their family or close friends have experienced discrimination remained unchanged from last year and actually dropped from 2007.

Hispanics make up about 15 percent of the U.S. population and also comprise the vast majority of the country’s roughly 11 million illegal immigrants.

The rise in concern comes as candidates, particularly Republicans, are increasingly featuring illegal immigration in their campaigns. U.S. Senate hopeful Republican Sharon Angle in Nevada has released ads linking her opponent Democratic Sen. Harry Reed to illegal immigrants with video of what appear to be scary-looking Latino gang members.”

So are the hispanics gonna be like the starsandbars crowd and vote GOP in FL and elect Rubio or not?

    • Ametia says:

The rethugs aren’t dogwhistling threats to Hispanics anymore, they are flat out using fear through their ad campaigns to suppress their votes, by eluding to ilegals.

  23. opulent2 says:

What we can expect if GOP wins majority of House:

“it means that lame-duck Democrats will pass another short “continuing resolution” to cover funding of all government programs. (The current one expires on Dec. 3.) If that happens, President Obama will not get the priorities and new programs he wanted, and Republicans will get the chance to undo them.

But the GOP will have to quickly make good on their pledge to cut $100 billion in spending — a number they have bragged about even while avoiding discussing painful, controversial specifics.

Most House Democrats, under siege though they are, are against extending the Bush-era income tax cuts to families who make more than $250,000. They will try to hold that line, but if they can’t, they will fight for a short-term extension for that top bracket.

Again, the idea is to make the GOP, in the new Congress, focus on that one group’s needs.

Democrats will try to vote more money for unemployment benefits. Winning that vote – even in the lame duck – won’t be easy. Democrats will do their best, but, again, that may mean a short-term measure. Republicans would have to return to the matter in January.

The most powerful IED on the road ahead is timed to explode some time this spring. Last February, Congress raised the ceiling on the national debt from $12.4 trillion to $14.2 trillion. Since then, the debt has risen to $13.7 trillion – which means Congress will have to raise it yet again within a few months.

A failure to approve one would, technically, bar the government from borrowing more money. In other words, we would not have the cash to pay our bills.

And yet Tea Party candidates and their fellow travelers in the GOP have vowed to oppose further increases in the legal debt ceiling.

Are they going to stick to that idea when faced with the reality of default?”

    ******

can’t wait for all these unemployed mad as hell idiots to find out what they really voted for.

No safety net for them whatsoever…the GOP makes money off suffering…they build power taking food and out of kids mouths and clothes off their back.

The gunmen in three vehicles drove up to the car wash in the city of Tepic and opened fire without provocation, said Fernando Carvajal, public safety secretary of Nayarit state, where the city is located. Fifteen men were killed and three people were injured.”

Sen. Michael Bennet may be the incumbent in Colorado, but he’s been running his campaign like an outsider. And though both Michelle Obama and Bill Clinton have recently stumped for him in the state, yesterday he explained to CNN why he doesn’t think President Obama’s presence would be helpful.

“I think that the personal reaction by the independent voters that you’ve described, based on a lot of, you know, the political rhetoric that’s gone back and forth, might not make it helpful,” Bennet said. “And I think the President should be in place around the country where he, where it will be helpful, and we are running this race on the facts on the ground in Colorado, what people are really interested in working on.”

The morning after his primary win in August, Bennet went on the Today show and downplayed the role that Obama’s presence on the campaign trail had played in his hard-fought victory over Andrew Romanoff. At the time, he said “we’ll have to see” when asked if he wanted Obama to return to Colorado in the general.

    • Ametia says:

No doubt if it were Bill Clinto with the same record after 2 years, Bennett would have NO problems. Yet, if this man looses, it will be Obama’s fault. GTFOH

ANOTHER GOP candidate sinking like a stone!! Folks aren’t deaf and blind!!

“A new poll conducted by Hays Research confirms what we already intuitively know. Alaska U.S. Senate candidate Joe Miller’s GOP candidacy is in big trouble. The percentage of Alaskans who feel either “somewhat negative” or “very negative” about Miller has skyrocketed in recent weeks to an astronomical 68 percent. Only 8 percent feel “somewhat negative” and the remainder, a jaw-dropping 60 percent, feel “very negative” about Miller as a candidate. A series of gaffes, inconsistencies, and controversial statements to the press, in addition to the arrest of a journalist by Miller security guards have come one on top of another, causing a trend that can only be described as a campaign death spiral.”

  29. Fake Group Hands Out Fliers Meant To Mislead Black Voters In Texas (VIDEO)

    http://tpmmuckraker.talkingpointsmemo.com/2010/10/fliers_from_fake_group_mislead_black_voters_in_texas_video.php?ref=fpb

Misleading fliers are showing up on the windshields of vehicles at a predominately African-American polling place in Houston that claim to come from a non-existent group called the “Black Democratic Trust of Texas.”

The fliers were placed on the windshields of vehicles at and near the Sunnyside Early Voting location and tell voters not to voter straight Democrat, according to Texas Democrats and local news reports.

“Republicans are trying to trick us!” the flier reads. “When you vote straight ticket Democrat, it is actually voting for Republicans and your vote doesn’t count. We are urging everyone to VOTE for BILL WHITE. A VOTE for BILL WHITE is a VOTE for the ENTIRE DEMOCRATIC ticket. We have fought too hard to let Republicans use voting machines to deny us our basic rights. We must guard the change and NOT VOTE STRAIGHT TICKET DEMOCRAT!”

“YES WE CAN,” the flier reads.

Look at the area they’re hitting? Sunnyside! A VOTE for BILL WHITE is a VOTE for the ENTIRE DEMOCRATIC ticket.”??? Ain’t that some ish? Like we’re a bunch of dumb*sses! I’m so mad I could break something!

Let the justices be the judge
    By Steven Lubet
    October 27, 2010

We will probably never know why Virginia Thomas decided to make her odd early morning telephone call to Anita Hill, and we can only guess at Clarence Thomas’ reaction when he learned that his wife had left a voice mail for the woman whose accusations of sexual harassment nearly derailed his nomination to the U.S. Supreme Court. On the other hand, we definitely know that Ms. Thomas is an outspoken opponent of President Barack Obama’s health care reforms, and we will eventually find out whether her high visibility on the issue will prompt Thomas’ recusal when challenges to the law reach the Supreme Court.

In what may well be the most troubling aspect of this whole contretemps, however, the disqualification decision will be made by Thomas alone, without the participation of the other justices. There are decent arguments on both sides of the disqualification question, but it should be obvious that Thomas is the last person in the world who ought to make the final decision. How could he fairly weigh the impact of his wife’s political activism on the public perception of his own neutrality? Yes, devoted spouses sometimes disagree about political and legal questions, but they can never really avoid worrying about the consequences of their actions on each others’ lives and jobs.

    GoodMorning Ametia and SouthernGirl!!

We now have a hatemongering INDUSTRY :

“Hating President Obama has become its own industry—and here’s a new stat to prove it: To date, there have been at least 46 anti-Obama books published. I’m not talking about thoughtful criticisms of his policies, but detailed demonizations of the president. These screeds cannot help but have an impact on the typically low-turnout, high-intensity midterm elections that will take place Tuesday…..snip

…The steady stream of these books—combined with fear-mongering emails, right wing talk radio and partisan cable news—are reasons why pathetically large numbers of Americans are ready to believe the worst about our president. This includes CNN’s finding that a quarter of all Americans believe that Obama was not born in the U.S. (a number that goes up to 41% among Republicans), the Pew Research Center’s finding that nearly 20% of Americans believe that the president is Muslim or the Democracy Corps finding that 55% of Americans think President Obama is a ‘socialist’. ”

  33. Michelle Obama’s $3 billion fashion ‘effect’
According to a new study, the first lady, and her chic choices, are moving markets

    http://theweek.com/article/index/208656/michelle-obamas-3-billion-fashion-effect

Talk about an economic stimulus package. According to a new study, First Lady Michelle Obama is having a profound and profitable effect on some lucky clothing retailers. (Watch an AP report about Michelle Obama’s fashion.) Here, a brief guide to the findings:

How can Mrs. Obama help sell clothes?
By wearing them. David Yermack, a business and finance professor at New York University’s Stern School, looked at 29 clothing companies whose garments Michelle Obama wore in 189 public appearances between November 2008 and December 2009. Their stock prices typically jumped by 2 to 3 percent — and when the first lady wore J. Crew on “The Tonight Show” in October 2008, the company’s stock price climbed 25 percent in the next three days. Such increases that “cannot be attributed to normal market variations,” says Yermack.

The tea party’s volatile influence on this election year appears to be doing more harm than good for Republicans’ chances in some of the closest races in the nation, in which little-known candidates who upset the establishment with primary wins are now stumbling in the campaign’s final days.

Police Consider More Arrests in Rand Paul Heckler Scuffle
Cops Investigate Others Involved in Scuffle, Stomping of MoveOn’s Lauren Valle

    Oct. 27, 2010

Kentucky cops are considering charges against at least two more Rand Paul supporters caught on tape wrestling a political heckler to the ground while another man stomped on her head.

At this point, the investigation is still ongoing,” Lexington Police spokeswoman Sherelle Roberts told ABC News. “We’re looking into other individuals who may have been involved in the assault and could get charged.”

A short, 50-second video clip of the scuffle shows a handful of people surrounding Lauren Valle, 23, a paid activist for the liberal group MoveOn.org, as she is pushed to the ground Monday.

The incident occurred as Paul was arriving for a debate with his Democratic opponent Jack Conway. The two men are campaigning for a Kentucky Senate seat.
