The White House has released the jam-packed schedule of President Obama’s trip to Asia after the midterm elections. In just nine days, Obama will swing through four countries and have six bilateral meetings with foreign leaders. Plus, he’ll make side trips to visit southeast Asia’s largest mosque in Indonesia and the Great Buddha statue in Japan.
First Lady Michelle Obama will accompany the President only on the first two legs of his Asia trip, India and Indonesia. The first couple’s two daughters will not be on the trip because school is in session.

“California, Nevada, Florida and Arizona remain the nation’s foreclosure hotbeds, accounting for 19 of the top 20 metropolitan areas with the highest foreclosure rates between July and September, foreclosure listing firm RealtyTrac Inc. said Thursday.
Those states saw housing values surge during the housing boom years. When the boom ended, values collapsed and foreclosures soared.
But the latest data show that many of the metro areas in those states saw a decline in the number of households receiving foreclosure-related filings, while many cities in other states saw a spike in foreclosure activity.
“The epidemic is spreading from the states at the ground zero of the foreclosure problems out into areas that hadn’t been previously affected,” said Rick Sharga, a senior vice president at RealtyTrac.
The trend is the latest sign that the nation’s foreclosure crisis is worsening as homeowners facing high unemployment, slow job growth and uncertainty about home prices continue to fall behind on their mortgage payments.

In all, 133 out of 206 metropolitan areas with at least 200,000 residents posted an annual increase in foreclosure activity in the three months ended Sept. 30, RealtyTrac said.
The firm tracks notices for defaults, scheduled home auctions and home repossessions – warnings that can lead up to a home eventually being lost to foreclosure.
Eleven out of the nation’s 20 largest metropolitan areas saw foreclosure activity increase in the third quarter compared to the same period last year.
The Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue metro area registered the sharpest annual increase – 71 percent. One in every 129 households received a foreclosure filing.
The Chicago-Naperville-Joliet metropolitan area posted the second-highest annual jump, a 35 percent increase. One in every 84 households received a foreclosure notice.
Among the other metro areas where foreclosure activity jumped by a large margin this summer were Houston-Sugar Land-Baytown, up 26 percent; Detroit-Warren-Livonia, at nearly 23 percent; and, Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Marietta, up 20 percent.
Economic woes, such as unemployment or reduced income, continue to be the main catalysts for foreclosures this year. The U.S. unemployment rate hit 9.6 percent last month.
In the Seattle metro area, unemployment stood slightly lower at 8.5 percent in August and has been edging lower. It was 8.7 percent in August last year.
Still, many troubled homeowners have been unable to hang on. As a result, there’s been no letup in the inventory of foreclosed homes on the market this year, says John Bauer, an agent with ZipRealty in Seattle who represents lenders selling foreclosed properties.
“It has been on an upward trend curve ever since 2008,” Bauer said. “And not just the third quarter of this year, but the last 12 months, it’s been on a steady ascension.”
Chicago also had the third-highest number of homes repossessed by lenders during the quarter – 12,568 – behind the Phoenix metro area’s 14,317 and the Miami metro area’s 12,963, RealtyTrac said.
Banks have seized more than 816,000 homes through the first nine months of the year and are on pace to seize more than a million.”

I am heartened by the prospect of divided government, but we shouldn’t expect government with a moderate, centre-right House to look a lot different from the moderate, centre-left government we’ve got now.
Nevertheless, people are going out of their minds stomping heads and warning of streets teeming with sexual predators because we are all phenomenal dupes willing to pick up the propaganda partisans put down. Our minds have been warped by relentless marketing designed to engender false consciousness of stark political brand contrasts. It’s as if Crest is telling us that Colgate leads to socialism and Colgate is telling us that Crest leads to plutocracy and all of us believe half of it.”

The middle class doesn’t like to get welfare checks, so instead it gets tax credits and deductions for doing things middle-class people generally do anyway. It’s six one way, half-a-dozen the other. Regulatory policy is even more indirect, but regulation often amounts to little more than welfare checks for some interest groups and taxes for others. Monetary policy has distributional consequences, too, by changing the real value of money. Other things equal, inflation erases both debt and savings; good for debtors, bad for creditors. I think you’ll find that political parties tend to reliably support policies that have nice distributional consequences for the interest groups that support them. And I think you’ll find politicians and court intellectuals brilliant at framing pay-offs to party stalwarts as policies absolutely necessary to the common weal. ”

Dr. Throupe thinks this might be phase two of the mortgage mess, as home-owners who survived the first tsunami of the post-housing bubble struggle to hold on to their properties. “Two years ago I saw quite a bit of it,” he says, “and now I’m seeing it again. I suspect [some] people are trying to rent the place for a while; maybe that worked, the lease got them half-way home on their debt, [but] now it’s coming home to roost and they’re still not making their debt.”
And the renters, meanwhile, are unwilling players in the so-called “shadow market.” Those are houses “that would be on the market if [their owners] felt they could sell them,” says Dr. Throupe. “A lot of those are renting; [their owners] trying to buy time to get to a better market condition.”
The shadow market also leaves some renters wondering if they’ll ever get back their security deposits, advanced rent payments and other out-of-pocket expenses. That concern, plus the uncertainty of whether to pay the property owner or the bank, has prompted some tenants to simply withhold payments altogether.
“I’ve heard that to some extent and I can’t blame them,” say Throupe. “Technically, who owns the rent? There’s still a contract in place, but it’s like that movie, Catch Me If You Can.”

Three years ago, Hispanics were most likely to cite language skills as the biggest reason for discrimination. Now, more than a third believe immigration is the biggest factor.
That said, the number of Latinos who reported they, their family or close friends have experienced discrimination remained unchanged from last year and actually dropped from 2007.

The rise in concern comes as candidates, particularly Republicans, are increasingly featuring illegal immigration in their campaigns. U.S. Senate hopeful Republican Sharon Angle in Nevada has released ads linking her opponent Democratic Sen. Harry Reed to illegal immigrants with video of what appear to be scary-looking Latino gang members.”

What we can expect if GOP wins majority of House:
“it means that lame-duck Democrats will pass another short “continuing resolution” to cover funding of all government programs. (The current one expires on Dec. 3.) If that happens, President Obama will not get the priorities and new programs he wanted, and Republicans will get the chance to undo them.
But the GOP will have to quickly make good on their pledge to cut $100 billion in spending — a number they have bragged about even while avoiding discussing painful, controversial specifics.
Most House Democrats, under siege though they are, are against extending the Bush-era income tax cuts to families who make more than $250,000. They will try to hold that line, but if they can’t, they will fight for a short-term extension for that top bracket.

Democrats will try to vote more money for unemployment benefits. Winning that vote – even in the lame duck – won’t be easy. Democrats will do their best, but, again, that may mean a short-term measure. Republicans would have to return to the matter in January.
The most powerful IED on the road ahead is timed to explode some time this spring. Last February, Congress raised the ceiling on the national debt from $12.4 trillion to $14.2 trillion. Since then, the debt has risen to $13.7 trillion – which means Congress will have to raise it yet again within a few months.
A failure to approve one would, technically, bar the government from borrowing more money. In other words, we would not have the cash to pay our bills.
And yet Tea Party candidates and their fellow travelers in the GOP have vowed to oppose further increases in the legal debt ceiling.
Are they going to stick to that idea when faced with the reality of default?”

“I think that the personal reaction by the independent voters that you’ve described, based on a lot of, you know, the political rhetoric that’s gone back and forth, might not make it helpful,” Bennet said. “And I think the President should be in place around the country where he, where it will be helpful, and we are running this race on the facts on the ground in Colorado, what people are really interested in working on.”
The morning after his primary win in August, Bennet went on the Today show and downplayed the role that Obama’s presence on the campaign trail had played in his hard-fought victory over Andrew Romanoff. At the time, he said “we’ll have to see” when asked if he wanted Obama to return to Colorado in the general.

Misleading fliers are showing up on the windshields of vehicles at a predominately African-American polling place in Houston that claim to come from a non-existent group called the “Black Democratic Trust of Texas.”
The fliers were placed on the windshields of vehicles at and near the Sunnyside Early Voting location and tell voters not to voter straight Democrat, according to Texas Democrats and local news reports.
“Republicans are trying to trick us!” the flier reads. “When you vote straight ticket Democrat, it is actually voting for Republicans and your vote doesn’t count. A new Quest Research poll in Rhode Island shows Lincoln Chafee (I) leading Frank Caprio (D) in the race for governor by seven points, 35% to 28%, with John Robitaille (R) at 25%. Caprio lost 12 points since a mid-October poll after saying earlier this week that President Obama can “shove it” after learning he would not get the president’s endorsement.

We will probably never know why Virginia Thomas decided to make her odd early morning telephone call to Anita Hill, and we can only guess at Clarence Thomas’ reaction when he learned that his wife had left a voice mail for the woman whose accusations of sexual harassment nearly derailed his nomination to the U.S. Supreme Court. On the other hand, we definitely know that Ms. Thomas is an outspoken opponent of President Barack Obama’s health care reforms, and we will eventually find out whether her high visibility on the issue will prompt Thomas’ recusal when challenges to the law reach the Supreme Court.
In what may well be the most troubling aspect of this whole contretemps, however, the disqualification decision will be made by Thomas alone, without the participation of the other justices. There are decent arguments on both sides of the disqualification question, but it should be obvious that Thomas is the last person in the world who ought to make the final decision. How could he fairly weigh the impact of his wife’s political activism on the public perception of his own neutrality? Yes, devoted spouses sometimes disagree about political and legal questions, but they can never really avoid worrying about the consequences of their actions on each others’ lives and jobs.

Kentucky cops are considering charges against at least two more Rand Paul supporters caught on tape wrestling a political heckler to the ground while another man stomped on her head.
At this point, the investigation is still ongoing,” Lexington Police spokeswoman Sherelle Roberts told ABC News. “We’re looking into other individuals who may have been involved in the assault and could get charged.”
A short, 50-second video clip of the scuffle shows a handful of people surrounding Lauren Valle, 23, a paid activist for the liberal group MoveOn.org, as she is pushed to the ground Monday.
The incident occurred as Paul was arriving for a debate with his Democratic opponent Jack Conway. The two men are campaigning for a Kentucky Senate seat.
