Eunice Kathleen Waymon (February 21, 1933 – April 21, 2003), better known by her stage name Nina Simone (/ˈniːnə sɨˈmoʊn/), was an American singer, songwriter, pianist, arranger, and civil rights activist. Although she disliked being categorized, Simone is most associated with jazz music. Simone originally aspired to become a classical pianist, but her work covers an eclectic variety of musical styles that include classical, jazz, blues, soul, folk, R&B, gospel, and pop. Her vocal style is characterized by intense passion, a loose vibrato, and a slightly androgynous timbre, in part due to her unusually low vocal range which veered between the alto and tenor ranges (occasionally even reaching baritone lows). Also known as The High Priestess of Soul, she paid great attention to the musical expression of emotions. Within one album or concert she could fluctuate between exuberant happiness and tragic melancholy. These fluctuations also characterized her own personality and personal life, amplified by bipolar disorder with which she was diagnosed in the mid-1960s, something not widely known until after her death in 2003, though she wrote of it openly in her autobiography published in 1992.[1] According to Nadine Cohodas, Simone’s biographer, Ms. Simone was first diagnosed with multiple personality disorder and later with schizophrenia.[2]
Simone recorded over 40 live and studio albums, the greatest body of her work released between 1958 (when she made her debut with Little Girl Blue) and 1974. Her most well known songs include “My Baby Just Cares for Me“, “I Put a Spell on You“, “Four Women“, “I Loves You Porgy“, “Feeling Good“, “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood“, “Sinnerman“, “To Be Young, Gifted and Black“, “Mississippi Goddam“, “Ain’t Got No, I Got Life,” “I Want a Little Sugar in My Bowl”, and “Love Me or Leave Me”.

Bush was a teenager, his mother, Barbara, showed him her miscarried fetus in a jar. “There’s no question that affected me, a philosophy that we should respect life,” he tells Matt Lauer in an interview that will air tonight. This bizarre anecdote may make Barbara sound like a pro-life extremist who used scare tactics to sway her son’s views of abortion, but what the Post doesn’t mention is that the former first lady eventually became pro-choice.
In the NBC interview, the former president explains that in the mid-1960s he had to drive his mom to the hospital after her miscarriage because his dad was out of town. “She said to her teenage kid, ‘Here’s the fetus,'” Bush says in the interview. “There was a human life, a little brother or sister.” Lauer reads an excerpt from Bush’s book, “Decision Points,” in which he recounts the incident: “I never expected to see the remains of the fetus, which she had saved in a jar to bring to the hospital.”

Jakarta. United States President Barack Obama said on Wednesday that Muslim-majority Indonesia’s national philosophy of unity between people of different faiths and ethnic backgrounds was an inspiration to the world.
“This is the foundation of Indonesia’s example to the world, and this is why Indonesia will play such an important role in the 21st century,” Obama said in a speech at the University of Indonesia during a visit to Jakarta.
Obama also reiterated his determination to push past obstacles to peace in the Middle East, saying the United States has been persistent in the pursuit of peace, despite a history of false starts and setbacks.
The president says enormous obstacles remain, but the United States was committed to overcoming them.
He said the US would spare no effort to reach the goal of two states — Israel and Palestine — living side by side in peace.
In a speech that praised Indonesia, he also reiterated his call for a new beginning between the US and Muslim world.
Some of the 7,500 people that packed that 5,000-seat capacity Balairung UI, University of Indonesia’s main function hall, were up at the wee hours of the morning to gather at Parkir Timur Senayan in South Jakarta, where chartered buses were provided to ferry them to the Depok campus. No cars were allowed inside the campus for the event.

According to the WFTL website, she’ll be retaining a correspondent position while she carries out her Capitol Hill duties for the West camp, a setup that a House Committee on Standards of Official Conduct believes could be “potentially problematic,” according to ThinkProgress.
Perhaps more problematic than her employment future, however, is her rhetorical history. As if a blend of her two commentator colleagues, Kaufman is herself known for lobbing partisan firebombs that often focus on issues such as illegal immigration and, more broadly, Democratic leadership.

Greene, the unlikely Democratic Senate nominee in South Carolina who lost overwhelmingly to Republican Sen. Jim DeMint last week, called the state Democratic Party on Tuesday to ask how much it would cost to run for president.
“Maybe. I’ll have to see,” Greene told POLITICO when asked whether he was considering filing to run for president. He confirmed that he called the state party Tuesday to ask about the fee.
That fee was $2,500 in 2008.
Maybe he could afford it by earning a few bucks as a motivational speaker.

In this way, he reflected the spirit of religious tolerance that is enshrined in Indonesia’s Constitution, and that remains one of this country’s defining and inspiring characteristics.
I stayed here for four years – a time that helped shape my childhood; a time that saw the birth of my wonderful sister, Maya; and a time that made such an impression on my mother that she kept returning to Indonesia over the next twenty years to live, work and travel – pursuing her passion of promoting opportunity in Indonesia’s villages, particularly for women and girls. This new requirement that all Americans maintain health insurance – buying it from private insurers if they don’t qualify for public programs – will be a massive boon to the industry come 2014 when the mandate kicks in.
Whether you agree with insurers that the mandate is a good idea, it’s hard to read the above quote and believe anyone who says the ACA is a socialist plot.

Why in the hell does MSNBC keep giving this petulant liar a format? And yeah, I’m talking to you, Ed Schultz, as well. Chris Matthews brought on Cheney sycophant Ron Christie, who proceeded to do what he always does when he appears on MSNBC — lie, feign outrage and talk over the other guests. I feel your pain, Joan Walsh.
Christie of course spent the segment making excuses for the Bush administration and the outing of Valerie Plame and our invasion of Iraq. Christie looked like he was going to pop a gasket when Joan Walsh dared to point out that she like most of us have some trouble figuring out where George Bush’s “moral” and “psychological compass” were at after we watched him yucking it up with his “have mores” making jokes about not being able to find and WMD’s in Iraq. The horror! How dare you point out the painfully obvious Joan Walsh?! This guy makes my head hurt about as badly as Pat Buchanan does. I’d love to see MSNBC show both of them the door.

Obama Visits a Nation That Knew Him as Barry

JAKARTA, Indonesia — The two houses where he spent part of his boyhood stand pretty much the way they did when he went back to Hawaii four decades ago. The two schools he attended have grown larger but, in spirit, remain unchanged. Some of his old friends can still be found around the neighborhood.
Near one of his homes here, the same family still runs a wooden stall selling gado-gado, an Indonesian salad covered in peanut sauce. Agus Salam, who took over the business from his mother years ago, played soccer with the American boy everybody here called Barry.
“His house — all the houses around here — haven’t changed,” said Mr. Salam, 56.
When President Obama visits Jakarta on Tuesday, he will find a city that, in some ways, has changed beyond recognition. A city of one luxury hotel and one shopping mall when Mr. Obama lived here between 1967 and 1971, Jakarta is now the overextended and overcrowded capital of the world’s fourth most populous nation. But Jakarta’s neighborhoods, including the two where Mr. Obama lived, retain enough of their former selves that the president would quickly find his bearings.

Diet-schmiet, Obama packs away the exotica at India state dinner

The very first state dinner that the already departed social secretary Desiree Rogers threw at the Obama White House was for Manmohan Singh, India’s prime minister, not to be confused with the gatecrashing Salahis, who attended anyway and have been milking their infamy ever since. State dinners aside, the Obamas have roiled the Washington social set with their new rules prohibiting mingling and a reception line.
But in New Delhi, Singh returned the favor for the Obamas on Monday night, sitting on the American president’s right while India’s president, Pratibha Patil, sat on Obama’s left.
And what a spread the hosts laid on for their 170 guests
No cheesburgers with mayo and fries or pastrami with cole slaw for the nation’s First Family of Fast Food Eaters. But both the Democratic president and his ardent healthy-eating advocate wife, Michelle, appeared to enjoy themselves.
They had fish tikka achari, shahi zeera pulao and chicken shami kebab.
Also pista murg and balak papri chat and sunehri kalai lamb.
And for dignitary veggie lovers, mahrani hara pyaz, kyoti dal and the always popular bharwan parwal.
Herbal teas, of course. And breads from rotis to naan. Also churipayas.
The magnificent setting was the sprawling Mughai Gardens in an open tent. An Indian….
…naval band played popular Hindi and English music. And last Tuesday’s disastrous midterm election results seemed six days away.

Mr President, Lead
Last week, voters made a powerful statement about leadership: They’d like some, please. So far, there’s no evidence that either President Obama or the top Republicans in Congress were paying the slightest attention.
In his only interview since the GOP rampage, with Steve Kroft of “60 Minutes,” Obama was reasonable, analytical, professorial – but also uninspired and uninspiring. I’m just being honest, if not generous; when Kroft asked whatever happened to Obama’s “mojo,” the president gave the impression that he’s been wondering the same thing.
By uninspired, I mean there was no sense that Obama relishes the high-stakes political battles that are sure to come over the next two years. There was no hint, for example, that he looks forward to the opportunity to put Republicans on the spot about all the unrealistic budget-cutting they say they want to carry out. And by uninspiring, I mean that the president offered no vision of a brighter tomorrow. Instead, he sketched a future not quite as dim as the present.
Obama said he has learned that “leadership isn’t just legislation” – that it’s also “a matter of persuading people . . . giving them confidence and bringing them together . . . setting a tone.” He acknowledged that “we haven’t always been successful at that,” then gave a demonstration.
“Do you get discouraged? Are you discouraged now?” Kroft asked.

Obama warms ties with Indonesia; volcano may cut trip

JAKARTA (Reuters) – U.S. President Barack Obama arrived in Jakarta on Tuesday for a visit aimed at boosting U.S. security and trade ties with Indonesia, and using the most populous Muslim nation to reach out to the wider Islamic world.
The visit to Indonesia, seen by Obama as an important destination for a variety of strategic and personal reasons, has been twice postponed and the White House said this 20-hour trip could be cut short because of atmospheric ash belched by eruptions from Mount Merapi volcano, 600 kms (375 miles) away.
Indonesia’s importance as a U.S. ally is on the rise, even if the joy over Obama’s election has faded since he became president almost two years ago.
Southeast Asia’s biggest economy and a G20 member, Indonesia proved resilient to the financial crisis and has become a hot destination for emerging market investors looking to tap strong consumer demand, abundant resources and political stability.
“We see in Indonesia the intersection of a lot of key American interests, and we see this as a partnership that is very important to the future of American interests in Asia and the world,” said Ben Rhodes, Obama’s deputy national security advisor for strategic communications.
