Eunice Kathleen Waymon (February 21, 1933 – April 21, 2003), better known by her stage name Nina Simone (/ˈniːnə sɨˈmoʊn/), was an American singer, songwriter, pianist, arranger, and civil rights activist. Although she disliked being categorized, Simone is most associated with jazz music. Simone originally aspired to become a classical pianist, but her work covers an eclectic variety of musical styles that include classical, jazz, blues, soul, folk, R&B, gospel, and pop. Her vocal style is characterized by intense passion, a loose vibrato, and a slightly androgynous timbre, in part due to her unusually low vocal range which veered between the alto and tenor ranges (occasionally even reaching baritone lows). Also known as The High Priestess of Soul, she paid great attention to the musical expression of emotions. Within one album or concert she could fluctuate between exuberant happiness and tragic melancholy. These fluctuations also characterized her own personality and personal life, amplified by bipolar disorder with which she was diagnosed in the mid-1960s, something not widely known until after her death in 2003, though she wrote of it openly in her autobiography published in 1992.[1] According to Nadine Cohodas, Simone’s biographer, Ms. Simone was first diagnosed with multiple personality disorder and later with schizophrenia.[2]

Simone recorded over 40 live and studio albums, the greatest body of her work released between 1958 (when she made her debut with Little Girl Blue) and 1974. Her most well known songs include “My Baby Just Cares for Me“, “I Put a Spell on You“, “Four Women“, “I Loves You Porgy“, “Feeling Good“, “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood“, “Sinnerman“, “To Be Young, Gifted and Black“, “Mississippi Goddam“, “Ain’t Got No, I Got Life,” “I Want a Little Sugar in My Bowl”, and “Love Me or Leave Me”.

Her music and message made a strong and lasting impact on culture,[3] illustrated by the numerous contemporary artists who cite her as an important influence (see Legacy and influence). Several hip hop musicians and other modern artists sample and remix Simone’s rhythms and beats on their tracks. In particular, Talib Kweli and Mos Def routinely pay tribute to her outstanding and soulful musical style. Many of her songs are featured on motion picture soundtracks, as well as in video games, commercials, and TV series.

Make it a great day!

  1. When Bush’s mother showed him her miscarriage

    http://www.salon.com/life/broadsheet/?story=/mwt/broadsheet/2010/11/08/bush_fetus

In the weirdest news item of the day, the New York Post reveals that when George W. Bush was a teenager, his mother, Barbara, showed him her miscarried fetus in a jar. “There’s no question that affected me, a philosophy that we should respect life,” he tells Matt Lauer in an interview that will air tonight. This bizarre anecdote may make Barbara sound like a pro-life extremist who used scare tactics to sway her son’s views of abortion, but what the Post doesn’t mention is that the former first lady eventually became pro-choice.

In the NBC interview, the former president explains that in the mid-1960s he had to drive his mom to the hospital after her miscarriage because his dad was out of town. “She said to her teenage kid, ‘Here’s the fetus,'” Bush says in the interview. “There was a human life, a little brother or sister.” Lauer reads an excerpt from Bush’s book, “Decision Points,” in which he recounts the incident: “I never expected to see the remains of the fetus, which she had saved in a jar to bring to the hospital.”

Obama Launches Historic Speech at University of Indonesia
    November 10, 2010

Jakarta. United States President Barack Obama said on Wednesday that Muslim-majority Indonesia’s national philosophy of unity between people of different faiths and ethnic backgrounds was an inspiration to the world.

“This is the foundation of Indonesia’s example to the world, and this is why Indonesia will play such an important role in the 21st century,” Obama said in a speech at the University of Indonesia during a visit to Jakarta.

Obama also reiterated his determination to push past obstacles to peace in the Middle East, saying the United States has been persistent in the pursuit of peace, despite a history of false starts and setbacks.

The president says enormous obstacles remain, but the United States was committed to overcoming them.

He said the US would spare no effort to reach the goal of two states — Israel and Palestine — living side by side in peace.

In a speech that praised Indonesia, he also reiterated his call for a new beginning between the US and Muslim world.

Some of the 7,500 people that packed that 5,000-seat capacity Balairung UI, University of Indonesia’s main function hall, were up at the wee hours of the morning to gather at Parkir Timur Senayan in South Jakarta, where chartered buses were provided to ferry them to the Depok campus. No cars were allowed inside the campus for the event.

O my, My My!!! POTUS &FLOTUS refuse to skin and grin!!

They refuse to be on view like orangutans at the zooo…no smilin, cheesin, photo ops for them! Guess these ‘elites best sign up to volunteer and get VIP tickets to STAND and shake his hand!! LMAO!!

“While many Americans have been paying attention to all this election silliness and prognostications about which political philosophy will control which house of the country’s Congress for the next two years, it seems major turmoil is building within Washington’s self-proclaimed social elite crowd.

The elites are the elites because they give money to cultural and political things which, as everyone knows by now, buys them access to the powerful, who deny this.

In this case, the access is to the White House and its reputedly elegant social affairs, which is a….
…big deal among those unelected but rich permanent residents of the Capitol area. Many presidents have rewarded these well-dressed people with receptions and dinners and, most importantly, an executive residence receiving line.

These are called “grip and grins” because the donor grips the president’s hand, they both smile and a White House photographer snaps a photo, which is often then signed by an autographing machine so it can hang in an office or den as framed testimony to eliteness — and access.

Bill Clinton is a master of this phony protocol, providing brief spoken exchanges that send supporters away absolutely convinced he remembers and appreciates each of them. On the campaign trail, such photos with Obama could cost upwards of $20,000 at a fundraising dinner.Democrats Barack and Michelle Obamas make a grand entrance to a White House reception

But here’s the deal: The White House’s rookie rubes from Illinois don’t understand how Washington works. Or they do understand, but they don’t care.

Now that they’re in the White House, the Obamas don’t like the lines. And they don’t like the press of ordinary people around them during mingles. So, as Women’s Wear Daily explained so exquisitely recently here, they’ve ordered changes. No more tedious-for-them-exciting-for-others reception lines.

And in the actual affair’s rooms, new barriers have been erected to keep some distance between the first couple and those who would approach them. No more mingling. Handshakes and quick chatter only for those up front right by the red rope or chain. Sometimes, only one Obama attends.

Needless to say, this has outraged many accustomed to preferred treatment but who don’t want their names published because they still want to be invited. Others, however, are less reticent, still donate but don’t bother going anymore.

“It just doesn’t seem very hospitable to me,” observes Maureen Malek, a recent D.C. ball chairwoman. “It’s their way, and each president has his own way of greeting people. For some people, it doesn’t matter. They just love being in the White House. I like it the other way.”

The instinct of defensive presidential aides is always to blame security concerns and the Secret Service, which can’t shoot back despite all its rapid-fire weapons.

But, of course, the reality of the White House security system is that, unless your name is Salahi, you’ve had to be OKd by the political folks, advance-cleared via Social Security number and background check, pre-cleared at the gate and metal-screened there too.”

  5. Tea Party Congressman’s Chief Of Staff: Hang Illegal Immigrants Who Commit Crimes

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/11/09/joyce-kaufman-allen-west-chief-of-staff_n_781178.html

Representative-elect Allen West (R-Fla.) decided this week to follow up a controversial and highly successful congressional campaign with a staff announcement in the same vein.

Conservative radio show host Joyce Kaufman will serve as chief of staff to West, a Tea Party-backed political insurgent from Florida’s southern coast.

Kaufman is a local staple on Sunshine State airwaves, talking politics from 12pm-3pm on WFTL as part of a lineup that includes heavyweights such as Lou Dobbs and Michael Savage. According to the WFTL website, she’ll be retaining a correspondent position while she carries out her Capitol Hill duties for the West camp, a setup that a House Committee on Standards of Official Conduct believes could be “potentially problematic,” according to ThinkProgress.

Perhaps more problematic than her employment future, however, is her rhetorical history. As if a blend of her two commentator colleagues, Kaufman is herself known for lobbing partisan firebombs that often focus on issues such as illegal immigration and, more broadly, Democratic leadership.

Alvin Greene may run for president in 2012

Greene, the unlikely Democratic Senate nominee in South Carolina who lost overwhelmingly to Republican Sen. Jim DeMint last week, called the state Democratic Party on Tuesday to ask how much it would cost to run for president.

“Maybe. I’ll have to see,” Greene told POLITICO when asked whether he was considering filing to run for president. He confirmed that he called the state party Tuesday to ask about the fee.
That fee was $2,500 in 2008.
Maybe he could afford it by earning a few bucks as a motivational speaker.

Fisher, who’s black, believes there was something race-related about the way Aldrich, who’s white, turned him away when he ducked into Mike’s Barber Shop asking for a trim one day last month.

What happened next triggered hard feelings on both sides, a demonstration by locals unhappy with the barber and a new example of an old problem – white barbers and hairdressers struggling to cope with black customers’ hair, which generally is thicker and curlier than white people’s hair.

“It’s a major, major problem,” said Willie Morrow, an author of books about barbering black people’s hair.”

And in more…Texas is soooo speeeecial news:

The Texas state government is facing a drastic budget mess. After more than a decade of conservatism, Texas suddenly finds itself in a $25 billion hole.

To address the shortfall, a growing number of Texas Republicans are interested in simply withdrawing from the Medicaid program altogether.

As for Texas, which already has the highest rate of uninsured residents in the country, dropping out of Medicaid would take the total from 26% of the state to 40% of the state.

“For close to 15 years now, all major congressional actions have basically been giveaways.

    This is just a fact.

Republicans have given tax cuts and corporate subsidies with borrowed money. Democrats have given spending and benefits with borrowed money. Republicans and Democrats have agreed to spend even more on pet projects with borrowed money. (Sometimes programs are “paid for,” with new taxes and cuts offsetting new costs, but they all take place in the context of a federal budget that is decidedly not paid for.) And the giveaways will stop, eventually. As the Urban Institute’s Eugene Steuerle writes,

Now, even if you believe we need more temporary stimulus, the long-run budget is so out of whack that our newly elected officials must restore some sort of balance. That’s right, our elected officials must become tax collectors in the broadest sense of the word: they must ask us to give up something.

In other words, if you hate your government now, just wait a few more years.”

They still trying to call President Obama ‘that one’..his “otherness” is o so mystifying…arrrrrrgh!!:

“Slogging his way through Washington over the past couple of years has certainly demystified Barack Obama. The thoughtful writer with a complex identity and exotic upbringing has gradually morphed into just another an embattled president caught up in tedious Capitol Hill battles with the capital’s usual suspects. But Obama’s remarks up his return to Indonesia today, where he lived for four years as a boy, are a good reminder that the White House really hasn’t ever seen the likes of Obama before:

Let me begin with a simple statement: Indonesia is a part of me. I first came to this country when my mother married an Indonesian man named Lolo Soetoro. As a young boy, I was coming to a different world. But the people of Indonesia quickly made me feel at home.

Jakarta looked very different in those days. The city was filled with buildings that were no more than a few stories tall. The Hotel Indonesia was one of the few high rises, and there was just one brand new shopping center called Sarinah. Betchaks outnumbered automobiles in those days, and the highway quickly gave way to unpaved roads and kampongs.

We moved to Menteng Dalam, where we lived in a small house with a mango tree out front. I learned to love Indonesia while flying kites, running along paddy fields, catching dragonflies, and buying satay and baso from the street vendors. Most of all, I remember the people – the old men and women who welcomed us with smiles; the children who made a foreigner feel like a neighbor; and the teachers who helped me learn about the wider world.

Because Indonesia is made up of thousands of islands, hundreds of languages, and people from scores of regions and ethnic groups, my times here helped me appreciate the common humanity of all people. And while my stepfather, like most Indonesians, was raised a Muslim, he firmly believed that all religions were worthy of respect. In this way, he reflected the spirit of religious tolerance that is enshrined in Indonesia’s Constitution, and that remains one of this country’s defining and inspiring characteristics.

I stayed here for four years – a time that helped shape my childhood; a time that saw the birth of my wonderful sister, Maya; and a time that made such an impression on my mother that she kept returning to Indonesia over the next twenty years to live, work and travel – pursuing her passion of promoting opportunity in Indonesia’s villages, particularly for women and girls. For her entire life, my mother held this place and its people close to her heart.

So much has changed in the four decades since I boarded a plane to move back to Hawaii. If you asked me – or any of my schoolmates who knew me back then – I don’t think any of us could have anticipated that I would one day come back to Jakarta as President of the United States. And few could have anticipated the remarkable story of Indonesia over these last four decades.

Newt Gingrich and his new majorities were triumphant. I was polling then for President Bill Clinton and the poll findings today in this joint poll with Resurgent Republic look eerily similar. A president would own nothing while a soldier would possess weapons and a businessmen would have money, the young Obama explained.

Mr. Januadi and his younger brother, both of whom later joined the Indonesian military, said they wanted to become soldiers. Another boy, a future banker, said he would become a businessman.

“Then Barry said he would become president and order the soldier to guard him and the businessman to use his money to build him something,” Mr. Januadi said. “We told him, ‘You cheated. You didn’t give us those details.’ ”

The nanny later joined a group of transvestites called Fantastic Dolls, who, like the many transvestites who remain fixtures of Jakarta’s streetscape, entertained people by dancing and playing volleyball.”

Christie of course spent the segment making excuses for the Bush administration and the outing of Valerie Plame and our invasion of Iraq. Christie looked like he was going to pop a gasket when Joan Walsh dared to point out that she like most of us have some trouble figuring out where George Bush’s “moral” and “psychological compass” were at after we watched him yucking it up with his “have mores” making jokes about not being able to find and WMD’s in Iraq. The horror! How dare you point out the painfully obvious Joan Walsh?! This guy makes my head hurt about as badly as Pat Buchanan does. I’d love to see MSNBC show both of them the door.

Obama Visits a Nation That Knew Him as Barry
    By NORIMITSU ONISHI
    Published: November 8, 2010

JAKARTA, Indonesia — The two houses where he spent part of his boyhood stand pretty much the way they did when he went back to Hawaii four decades ago. The two schools he attended have grown larger but, in spirit, remain unchanged. Some of his old friends can still be found around the neighborhood.

Near one of his homes here, the same family still runs a wooden stall selling gado-gado, an Indonesian salad covered in peanut sauce. Agus Salam, who took over the business from his mother years ago, played soccer with the American boy everybody here called Barry.

“His house — all the houses around here — haven’t changed,” said Mr. Salam, 56.

When President Obama visits Jakarta on Tuesday, he will find a city that, in some ways, has changed beyond recognition. A city of one luxury hotel and one shopping mall when Mr. Obama lived here between 1967 and 1971, Jakarta is now the overextended and overcrowded capital of the world’s fourth most populous nation. But Jakarta’s neighborhoods, including the two where Mr. Obama lived, retain enough of their former selves that the president would quickly find his bearings.

Diet-schmiet, Obama packs away the exotica at India state dinner
    November 8, 2010 | 4:16 pm

The very first state dinner that the already departed social secretary Desiree Rogers threw at the Obama White House was for Manmohan Singh, India’s prime minister, not to be confused with the gatecrashing Salahis, who attended anyway and have been milking their infamy ever since. State dinners aside, the Obamas have roiled the Washington social set with their new rules prohibiting mingling and a reception line.
But in New Delhi, Singh returned the favor for the Obamas on Monday night, sitting on the American president’s right while India’s president, Pratibha Patil, sat on Obama’s left.
And what a spread the hosts laid on for their 170 guests
No cheesburgers with mayo and fries or pastrami with cole slaw for the nation’s First Family of Fast Food Eaters. But both the Democratic president and his ardent healthy-eating advocate wife, Michelle, appeared to enjoy themselves.
They had fish tikka achari, shahi zeera pulao and chicken shami kebab.
Also pista murg and balak papri chat and sunehri kalai lamb.
And for dignitary veggie lovers, mahrani hara pyaz, kyoti dal and the always popular bharwan parwal.
Herbal teas, of course. And breads from rotis to naan. Also churipayas.
The magnificent setting was the sprawling Mughai Gardens in an open tent. An Indian….
…naval band played popular Hindi and English music. And last Tuesday’s disastrous midterm election results seemed six days away.

    Mr President, Lead

Last week, voters made a powerful statement about leadership: They’d like some, please. So far, there’s no evidence that either President Obama or the top Republicans in Congress were paying the slightest attention.
In his only interview since the GOP rampage, with Steve Kroft of “60 Minutes,” Obama was reasonable, analytical, professorial – but also uninspired and uninspiring. I’m just being honest, if not generous; when Kroft asked whatever happened to Obama’s “mojo,” the president gave the impression that he’s been wondering the same thing.
By uninspired, I mean there was no sense that Obama relishes the high-stakes political battles that are sure to come over the next two years. There was no hint, for example, that he looks forward to the opportunity to put Republicans on the spot about all the unrealistic budget-cutting they say they want to carry out. And by uninspiring, I mean that the president offered no vision of a brighter tomorrow. Instead, he sketched a future not quite as dim as the present.
Obama said he has learned that “leadership isn’t just legislation” – that it’s also “a matter of persuading people . . . giving them confidence and bringing them together . . . setting a tone.” He acknowledged that “we haven’t always been successful at that,” then gave a demonstration.
“Do you get discouraged? Are you discouraged now?” Kroft asked.

Obama warms ties with Indonesia; volcano may cut trip
    By Neil Chatterjee

JAKARTA (Reuters) – U.S. President Barack Obama arrived in Jakarta on Tuesday for a visit aimed at boosting U.S. security and trade ties with Indonesia, and using the most populous Muslim nation to reach out to the wider Islamic world.

The visit to Indonesia, seen by Obama as an important destination for a variety of strategic and personal reasons, has been twice postponed and the White House said this 20-hour trip could be cut short because of atmospheric ash belched by eruptions from Mount Merapi volcano, 600 kms (375 miles) away.

Indonesia’s importance as a U.S. ally is on the rise, even if the joy over Obama’s election has faded since he became president almost two years ago.

Southeast Asia’s biggest economy and a G20 member, Indonesia proved resilient to the financial crisis and has become a hot destination for emerging market investors looking to tap strong consumer demand, abundant resources and political stability.

“We see in Indonesia the intersection of a lot of key American interests, and we see this as a partnership that is very important to the future of American interests in Asia and the world,” said Ben Rhodes, Obama’s deputy national security advisor for strategic communications.
