    WASHINGTON — The health care law that Republicans are targeting for repeal provides significant assistance and options for people with mental illness, an issue that has received increased attention as details emerge about the alleged shooter in Arizona on Saturday.

    “The shooter was a very disturbed individual and it appears there were so many warning signs that he was going to do something horrible,” Rep. Allen West (R-Fla.) wrote on his Facebook page. “We should be focusing on the mental health crisis in our country, not politics.”

    As Igor Volsky of ThinkProgress points out, Rep. Mike Rogers (R-Mich.) similarly told MSNBC Tuesday, “A bad guy is going to get a gun. What we have to do is “intervene earlier in that cycle of violence when they have this kind of mental disability.”

    Lawmakers looking for a way to boost mental health services might want to start by checking out last year’s Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, which both West and Rogers support repealing. Mental health advocates have hailed the law for its expansion of access.

      LOL go figure! so much for the pundits telling PBO he should address mental health in his memorial services address. SMGDH. If the pundits had a clue of what’s in the HCR bill, they’d report the FACTS, but that would be too much like real journalism!

    Man Arrested For Threatening Democratic Congressman

    A man has been arrested for threatening Rep. Jim McDermott, according to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer.

    The PI reports that Charles Turner Habermann was arrested Wednesday morning for allegedly making threatening phone calls to McDermott, a Democratic congressman who represents Seattle.

    According to the Seattle Times, Habermann is a 32-year-old Palm Springs, Calif. resident. Federal prosecutors claim that he would hire someone to put McDermott “in the trash,” the Seattle Times reports.

    Black GOP Official Resigns, Citing Arizona Tea Party Threats

    WASHINGTON — The sole black Republican Party district chairman in Arizona resigned from his post in the wake of Saturday’s shooting, citing threats from the Tea Party faction and concerns for his family’s safety, The Arizona Republic reports.

    Republican District 20 Chairman Anthony Miller was not the only party official to resign following the shooting that killed six and wounded 14 others, including Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) and a federal judge. But Miller had been an especially dedicated campaigner for the GOP, and said he only stepped down in the face of “constant verbal attacks” and other forms of intimidation, according to the Republic:

    Miller, a 43-year-old Ahwatukee Foothills resident and former campaign worker for U.S. Sen. John McCain, was re-elected to a second one-year term last month. He said constant verbal attacks after that election and Internet blog posts by some local members with Tea Party ties made him worry about his family’s safety.

    Jacob Volkmann, the mixed-martial arts fighter who said last week he wanted to “knock some sense into that idiot” Barack Obama, told HuffPost on Wednesday that he regretted the comment in light of the Saturday assassination attempt on Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) that left six people dead.

    “I would never make that comment if that shooting happened first,” said Volkmann, 30.

    The Arizona shooting has resulted in widespread, and sometimes controversial, calls for toned-down political rhetoric. Volkmann, whose remarks won him a customary visit from the Secret Service, is toning it down.

    Some Arizona Republican party officials resign after Tucson shooting

    While federal lawmakers debate how best to increase safety for themselves and their staff, some Arizona Republican party officials are choosing to leave office in the face of threats.

    A conflict that has been going on between local Arizona Republicans came to an end in the wake of the shooting in Tucson on Saturday when Arizona’s Republican District 20 Chairman Anthony Miller and several others chose to resign.

    The Arizona Republic reports that Miller, 43, a former campaign worker for Sen.John McCain who was re-elected to a second one-year term last month, has been concerned for his family’s safety by constant verbal attacks and blog posts from some local committee members with tea party movement ties.

    Miller told the state Republican Party Chairman Randy Pullen via e-mail that he was quitting. “Today my wife of 20 yrs ask [sic] me do I think that my PCs (Precinct Committee members) will shoot at our home? So with this being said I am stepping down from LD20GOP Chairman…I will make a full statement on Monday.”

    Miller, the first and only African-American to hold the party’s precinct chairmanship, said he had been called “McCain’s boy,” and that, during a speech, a member of the audience made the symbol of a gun with his hand and pointed it at him. “I wasn’t going to resign but decided to quit after what happened Saturday,” Miller said. “I love the Republican Party but I don’t want to take a bullet for anyone.”

    Miller is not alone. The newly-elected Dist. 20 Republican secretary, Sophia Johnson, first vice chairman Roger Dickinson, and former district spokesman Jeff Kolb, also quit.

    “This singular focus on ‘getting’ Anthony [Miller] was one of the main reasons I chose to resign,” Kolb said in an e-mail to another party activist.

    “It’s too bad,” said Sen. John McComish. “He didn’t deserve to be hounded out of office.”

    WASHINGTON — Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin’s first spoken words on the shootings in Tucson, Ariz. — a lengthy denunciation of both violence and pundits who are “manufacturing a blood libel” — was more an effort in media critique than post-tragedy reconciliation.

    And in the immediate aftermath, the reaction to it was a bit of incredulity, shock or simple confusion. Assistant House Minority Leader James Clyburn (D-S.C.) became one of the first lawmakers to weigh in Wednesday morning.

    “You know, Sarah Palin just can’t seem to get it, on any front. I think that she’s an attractive person, she is articulate,” Clyburn said on Bill Press’ radio show. “But I think intellectually, she seems not to be able to understand what’s going on here.”

    Clyburn’s comments were tame compared to the chilly reception and head-scratching that Palin’s statement received on the Internet and cable, where the anti-Semitic roots of the term “blood libel” did not go unnoticed.

    Kagan delivers first judicial opinion, in bankruptcy case

    The Supreme Court audience perked up Tuesday when Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. announced that Justice Elena Kagan would deliver the first judicial opinion of her career.

    “This case,” she said in a strong, confident voice, “is about proper interpretation of the bankruptcy code.”

    Like other rookie justices before her, Kagan drew a relatively noncontroversial decision for her maiden effort. The court ruled against a man who argued that an ambiguity in federal bankruptcy law allowed him to shield some income from creditors by claiming a monthly allowance for car payments, even though his car loan was paid off.

    Kagan wrote a detailed, 18-page opinion that spoke for seven of her colleagues. The lone dissenter was Justice Antonin Scalia, with whom Kagan has friendly relations. He took her skeet shooting earlier in the term.

    In the justices’ only other decision Tuesday, a unanimous court said the government may impose Social Security taxes on physicians who are in residencies at university hospitals. Roberts, who wrote the opinion, said the case raised the question of whether residents are students who work or workers who study.
